This is not a gloat post or padding or an attempt to 'have a go' at
any other groups or anything at all like that but I just noticed that
this month has had the second most posts EVER (only beaten by that
strange month when those pesky DG Marauders took over the group.)

Now I think that is pretty phenomenal and worthy of a mention as we
have had some very high posting months in the past and most of them
this month were even on topic. ;-)

Hey Mr. Whitty If we were ever thinking about retiring now would be
the time, go out at the top they reckon!
Gee, I can't wait until the time comes when this month needs
    archiving!! ;-)

That was me. I had personal reasons for suggesting the name "Lazarus",
but as I mentioned before, there are connotations that are connected
with that name so I knew that an interesting character or story plot
    could be devised around it.
Now that I put in my 2 cents worth, it interesting to see what others
    will do with the character.

Neil: Living here in Canada is great. What was that that Michael
mentioned? You lived here once? Come on over and then Ty will have to
hire you! Alas, the only cricket you'll see here are the insects
scampering in the outdoors in the summer or on an old Buddy Holly
vinyl. Looking forward to seeing your work in "Revolution", even if
it's only going to have to be a few drawings.

The whole 'commenting on comic strips' process that we are using has
drawbacks that have become apparent lately. Elliciting feedback on
just a few panels is bound to draw comments in minute details that,
when taking the finished story into context, are meaningless. When
reading a complete comic, an minor character will only be recognised
as such by the reader because that character has basically disappeared
from the main plot. The reader does not have time to say, "What about
this person?" because they will have seen that the story has moved on
and that the character was essentially a minor plot device. But if we
are asked to comment on a few panels with that character, we will
delve into areas that the writer never intended us to explore.

I like the concept that the "Going Home" reference will be applicable
many characters and their perceptions of what is "Home".

    Subject: Re: Galen's occupation
    .html
By that time, Neil, Galen had no other viable choice.
He had gotten to the jail just in time to see one of
Urko's gorilla lieutenants lurking outside, ready to
shoot the Astronauts dead. He interfered with Urko's
conspiracy... the gorilla's bullet winds up in the
gorilla, killing him... Urko has Galen arrested for,
among other things, MURDER of his lieutenant... Zaius,
on being brought to the jail, hears both sides of it,
but then is shown the book that Urko confiscated...

And Zaius apologetically tells Galen that he can't do
anything for him, now. Galen is to be killed. After a
fair trial? Absolutely not! It wouldn't do for Zaius
to allow Galen to present any 'evidence' at trial --
the Book, that is -- which would then be exposed to
the public. Zaius is gonna have Galen killed -- a
State-sanctioned murder done for reasons of 'national
    security'.

When the Astronauts find out about this, they go out
of their way to save Galen's life, and what other
choice does Galen have, then, but to run off with
them? If he were to go to his parents' home, not only
would he be apprehended by Urko's gorillas (who all
believe he murdered a fellow gorilla), but he would
also be putting his dad & mom at risk.

It is Urko's willingness to lie about the
circumstances of his lieutenant's death (to further
his conspiratorial attempt on the lives of the
Astronauts) and Zaius' willingness to cover up the
Truth, (the "Terrible Secret") that leads to Galen
being doomed by his own society. It is not by his own
choice that he is a fugitive -- his society FORCED him
    into becoming one.

So, Galen wasn't giving up any cushy job as Zaius'
errand-boy representative. He LOST that job when Zaius
told him "I'm sorry, Galen... I can do nothing for
    you."

In order to preserve Ignorance, Zaius is willing to
have Galen rubbed out. Ape shall never kill ape...
unless it's necessary in order to preserve the
Terrible Secret. Whatever respect Galen once felt for
Zaius up until that point, he had every reason to lose
all respect for him subsequently. If Zaius is willing
to have an innocent (if no longer ignorant) ape
assassinated, then how can the Apes pretend that they
are superior to Man? Galen has only to think of Zaius'
willingness to have him killed to know that Apes are
    no better than Humans.

Of course, Galen has yet to fathom the depths of Man's
destructive nature. Perhaps if he were to see archival
TV footage of Man-versus-Man violence, he might decide
that Zaius is right to deem Man to be too dangerous to
allow to exist at a higher level of intelligence. If
Galen were to know that the vilest war in Man's
history resulted in the deaths of over 6 billion
people... would he then think to himself that Apes
would never murder other Apes to THAT extreme, even if
they are occasionally willing to kill the occasional
enemy (like Aboro's attempt on Urko... or Carsia's
    plan against the High Council...)?

What would the Apes in general do if they were to
watch some of the horrific footage even WE can't see
on CNN or MSNBC or FOX News? Stuff like the beheading
of that poor guy by Al-Zarqawi's group of hooded
insurgents? I can see why someone like Caesar would
seek to create a NEW history, one which was free from
the overshadowing evil of Man's violent history.

Speaking of which, I can't wait for issue #2 of Ty's
    comic...

POTA2001 alumni Paul Giamatti got an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for "Cinderella Man" and Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride" got one for Best Animated Feature. Some were hoping "King Kong" would get a major nomination but it only got some technical noms. Guess it didn't rock the world.
Speaking of Rock, www.aintitcool.com reports that the Rock is planning to remake Clint Eastwood's "Every Which Way But Loose" (the one with the orangutan).  - - - Jeff

I am absolutely thrilled that I found this group.
The information and discussions are great and the stories like Beware,
Within and Going Home bring me delightfully back to a peaceful, inner
peaceful time when I waited, none too patiently, for the next issue of
the ol' Marvel b&w POTA mag. The art reminds me of Ploog's work in the
early days of the "Terror" storyline and the storytelling keeps the
interest level peeked, sometimes more than one wants, for that next
chapter to arrive. Perhaps once you've "finished" Going Home you might
consider continuing the Terror story? Maybe they could meet up with
some of the other POTA characters we already know.
    Keep up the great work!!!

      Now that WOULD be unbelievable.

I cannot imagine he would ever turn on his friends.

Choose not to sleep with them – YES.  Set them up…turn them in….NO!  The group dynamics are still the same – they all care very much about each other.  Really, to me, that’s the important thing in the TV show….not the individual behaviours at times, but more the overall care for each other.  I don’t think any of these characters should be sanctimonious – they need to have flaws.  But at the end of the day (even after hurling stones at each other) they really will be there for each other because they care.  Isn’t that what caring is about?  Knowing your friends are not PERFECT, but still being there to support them?

I had personal reasons for suggesting the name "Lazarus", but as I mentioned before, there are connotations that are connected with that name so I knew that an interesting character or story plot could be devised around it.

Neil: Living here in Canada is great. What was that that Michael mentioned? You lived here once? Come on over and then Ty will have to hire you! Alas, the only cricket you'll see here are the insects scampering in the outdoors in the summer or on an old Buddy Holly vinyl. Looking forward to seeing your work in "Revolution", even if it's only going to have to be a few drawings.

Actually, in the world of comics, pin-ups mean art pages at the back of a book.  At least that's what Infantino and Stan Lee used to call them when they ran in the silver age.

The whole 'commenting on comic strips' process that we are using has drawbacks that have become apparent lately. Elliciting feedback on just a few panels is bound to draw comments in minute details that, when taking the finished story into context, are meaningless.  When reading a complete comic, an minor character will only be recognised
as such by the reader because that character has basically disappeared from the main plot. The reader does not have time to say, "What about this person?" because they will have seen that the story has moved on and that the character was essentially a minor plot device. But if we are asked to comment on a few panels with that character, we will
delve into areas that the writer never intended us to explore.

I like the concept that the "Going Home" reference will be applicable many characters and their perceptions of what is "Home".

Some of us are still around. This is defininately not my Father's
Planet of the Apes TV type story. :) I am truly loving the new
direction you guys are taking. I've just been dealing with alot right
now and haven't been able to spend a bunch of time on the computer
debating on eyeballs or Nova pin ups. :) I agree that after dealing
with their situations for so long that it is easy to think that Burke
would finally give into some violent outburst twoards the apes, and
that Galen would finally have had enough and want to go home. I do
suspect that Dr. Zaius and Urko would not let it be that easy for him
even with an ailing parent. I also believe that without the action it
becomes a graphic novel and no longer fits into the
traditional "comic book". Sorry I haven't been more active but I
still truly enjoy and appreciate all your hard work.

If you want to read Within from the very first episode you can find all the at the DG Photos group.

Just check out the Within the Planet of the Apes folder.

They have been collected as pages in PDF format.

Make sure you also read the new Planet of the Apes  TV Show comic book  - Going H ome!

Go to the Home  Page, scroll down to around the middle of the page and click on the link to take you to the  pages finished so far.

Don't forget we also have 4 other groups 'attached' to the main one.

First up there is the DG Archives group:
This group was created to store old posts from the group which have been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to free up space as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore.
As this group is so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts forever we like to keep a copy of them all. They can be found in the Files section listed by month and year.

There is also the DG Fan Fiction group where members can place, in th e group's Files section, their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to be enjoyed by all:

Then there's the  DG Photos group:
Where photos and files are occasionally moved to save space on the main DG group

And finally, at the DG Photos 2 group you can now find even more of the group's Files:

All the sites can be easily accessed via the links on each one's Homepage.

Don't forget to check out the DG 's vast Photos section and all that great stuff in the Files section!

And w hilst you're here why not participate in a Poll or check out all those

wonderful links and generally have a fun filled family experience!

Thanks to Neil…..I actually had not realised that Pete would now become obsessed with finding Al and it’s a real pain in the ass because I wanted him doing other things!  Lucky Alcatraz has all those cells!

Now….I don’t think ANYBODY has seen the coming pages so I’ll be surprised if there are no comments.

The detailed work coming is some of Neil’s best.  The script is not really going to reveal too much but the scene WILL be set for issue #2 where there are more answers than questions.

Issue #2 will start a FURTHER 20 years on – and that’s intended because it will be around 30 years after the TV Show started (and finished!) and I’d like us all to think about what WE were doing back then…….and how much things have changed in that time.

      Michael

I honestly thought you'd leave Pete in the dark longer than this, so it was a pleasant surprise to see him learn the truth, and nicely done with him asking to bury his friend.

Good question Greg, and the answer will not be coming in the first issue.  SORRY!

When we have completed the first 22 pages, I'll discuss with Neil whether we should show the answer to that question, contained within a deleted page.

The more we looked at this page, the less it fitted in with this stage of the comic.

The deleted page reveals another interesting twist - the identity of another potential owner of that EYE!  Maybe we should have had a couple of eyes, because I'll tell you now Alan has been followed for some time now by persons waiting for an opportunity to get him away from his friends without doing harm to him.

We'll also be debating whether or not we will show out plan for the next 2 x 22 pages to the group or if we'll make everyone wait for the pencils.

Funny how it goes....I saw that movie with my dad at the cinema when I had broken up with a gal.

I was a miserable bastard at the time, and the old man thought it would really cheer me up because it had an orangutan in it and he had heard reviews that it was funny.

I recall being depressed when the film started and coming out of there feeling WAY better.

That was the first Clint Eastwood movie I had seen and I think Clint is my dad's definition of a "real man" - whatever that might be.

You should get a Japanese interpreter to script your comic for the Japanese market!  They are HUGE fans.

        I failed Advanced Japanese.
        I just barely passed intermediate.

Really T, WHY DO people like Battle?

My old man is one of the most intelligent people around.

His idea of a good movie is something completely mindless.

He reads 3-4 books a day.

He does bboks for enlightenment and movies for entertainment.

        Now go read REVOLUTION!

        I've seen his work before.
He does posters and cover art
for a lot of Texas bands like
        Ministry and Rev. Horton Heat.
Reminds me a lot of Mosquito.
