I thought the guy in the second panel with Pete (aka Gorilla Vest) looked a little like he was drawn by Ploog, especially in the outstretched arm, but I'd be surprised if that was it. There's probably something much more obvious that I'm missing.

The "messenger" in the first panel looks like a Ploog drawing. Nice
backlighting in any case.

Virdon and Burke always avoided killing gorillas because they didn't
want to give Urko an excuse to wipe out the local humans. It appears
another human, possibly Mustapha, chose to take a chance that the
humans could defend themselves.

The gorillas always seemed overconfident, which was understandable
when the humans didn't offer any resistance. Their losses at the
hands of the human guerillas should have a demoralising effect on
them. I would even expect to see gorilla deserters.

Hi.

I am new to the group.

I believe the most critical place to start when you are writing PofTA
stories is the timeline (and whether or not the tv show and the
cartoon fits in with the movies).

I am seeking the opinion of others.

My own timeline begins with the birth of TAYLOR. Would anyone care to
guess the year in which he was born and why?

I have seen some of the pages and the art is good. Maybe the best
ape drawings I have seen next to the U.K annuals.

I am very sorry but I do not like the story. It is almost
infantile. It seems to have been written by someone who has not
written anything since the sixth grade.

Has this artist done any other comics prior to this one?

There is nothing to like about Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

Then again maybe the fact that it stopped there.

They should have stopped cheapening the films immediately and
Beneath the P of the A was evidence of this. It was garbage.

Then we got that "thing" Tim Burton made. I don't count that as
part of the ape movies.

That's a good question, I never even thought of I would guess 1934. Remember Landon looked "Pretty Chipper for a man 2031 years old. So I would have guessed 34 or so at the time.

    Welcome to the group.

    I agree about the timelines.

I think you have to make a choice about the specific timeline theory that does it for you, justify that, and take it from there.

Or you can just dismiss it all and start again like I just have.

There is nothing to like about Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

Then again maybe the fact that it stopped there.

They should have stopped cheapening the films immediately and
Beneath the P of the A was evidence of this.  It was garbage.

Then we got that "thing" Tim Burton made.  I don't count that as
    part of the ape movies.

I am very sorry but I do not like the story.  It is almost
infantile.  It seems to have been written by someone who has not

The characters are all wrong. The story has holes everywhere. It
is not a pleasant experience to read this. The artwork is excellent
but it does not carry the story I am sorry.

I consider myself an authority because I have been involved in
    scripting comics.

I was disappointed in the second half.
I accept that POTA had a liberal slant
to it.  It's a product of that era.  But

My Dad took me to see it at the movies too and I still will watch it
on AMC when they show it. Its the kind of mindless fun you need every

This brings up another good point.....Serling often had weak, flighty stories but I really love them all.

Planet of the Apes was certainly flawed in the story - they were testing the Hasslein Theory and with "3 Adams and 1 Eve" they were obviously there to re-populate, knowing well that they were likely many years in the future.....why are they shocked that the theory is right?

Just for something completely different late last night I watched the

just appreciate the images and it was well worth it. The way the
frames are composed are breathtaking, the way there is always just the
right balance of bright blue sky and dull coloured desert with the
blue of the sky really making the orange of the rocks stand out.

It's amazing how interesting some of those stark empty backgrounds
      really are.
Who was mainly responsible for that sort of thing, was it the
director? the director of photography? the cameraman or probably a
      combination of a few people?

The whole desert treck is just perfect.

Would love to see these pages in colour though!

Ty, who is your colourist and do they use computer technology or a paint brush?

It really is unlikely that a comic would be published now days withoput colour right?

amazing. The kind of adult story I've always dreamed of seeing from
the Apes universe and you seem to be moving much faster without
having to wait for the panels to be inked. Thank you for this.

I suspected it might be something like that going on.  But - if that IS the case then it has backfired because they are actually just helping the DG by posting interesting things to talk about, albeit a bit nasty.

I don't care if people don't like the story I wrote but I would like to know why.

Greg P's comments are always constructive and you can tell he like the TV Show the way it was and he would approach a finale a different way.  I respect that (and indeed Greg) very much and appreciate his stance.

But it does look like a couple of "new members" (did I say MEMBERS!?) are just being cruel - and that's MY job!  ;)
I am SO tempted to just place them on moderation but this is not a moderated group (that is, however, quickly approaching the point where it will be reconsidered).

just appreciate the images and it was well worth it. The way the
frames are composed are breathtaking, the way there is always just the
right balance of bright blue sky and dull coloured desert with the
blue of the sky really making the orange of the rocks stand out.

It's amazing how interesting some of those stark empty backgrounds
      really are.
Who was mainly responsible for that sort of thing, was it the
director? the director of photography? the cameraman or probably a

The whole desert treck is just perfect.

It's a shame because they also seem to be pretending to be Chris Lawless and Rich Handley and I think the intention is to cause trouble between myself and Chris/Rich as an outcome.

It must be someone we KNOW because when I sent this "Chris" an email asking his name he replied "Chris Scriptless".  So it is someone who knows that Chris was working on a comic script for some time (still is I think?) that will be illustrated by Neil.  Chris writes for a living and that's why I have been anxiously awaiting his results (for a couple of years now!).

The IRONY....it could be HIM getting "messed with" right now had he delivered a script!

      Yes, I do, Mr. Jealous!

The "look" of a film, in terms frame compositions, is very much a collaboration between director of photography (cinematographer) and director of the film.  Some directors practice control, while others are happy to let the DP make decisions.  It all depends.

You are missing the point Rory.

Any bonehead can know that or find it out in a second in the IMDB so why waste brain cels on it?

Just for the hell of it:

Schaffner was director (noted mostly for THE WAR LORD befor PLANET and not much else, and for PATTON, PAPPILION and THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL post-planet).

Cinematography was provided by Leon Shamroy, best known for THE ROBE and THE KING AND I (pre PLANET) and sweet fuck all after Planet (then died around 74).

I would have though Rory you, in your penultimate wisdom, might suggest how these two personalities worked together and which of them might be most likely to deliver the beauty of the desert trek - or was it just that good shit Neil is breathing in?

Maybe I should have asked Jeff but he may not be speaking to me!  ;)

I have been looking through the archives and I think it is obvious
from the lack of comments that everyone here hates the story. The
comments are only ever about the art and that is good.

You need to get someone else to write the scripts.

I have some things I have been working on.

I think the mission was primarily one of exploration. Clearly Landon expected he be able to return to Earth not too long after he had left, probably within several years. The Earth clock was on the ship to either prove or disprove Hasslein's theory. Presumably the clock worked by measuring some external phenomena, such as relative star positions, to determine the correct date on Earth. I figure that if the theory had been proven true and the crew had no way of returning to Earth within a certain time frame after they had left, then they had the option of colonizing the planet where they landed.

Planet of the Apes was certainly flawed in the story - they were testing the Hasslein Theory and with "3 Adams and 1 Eve" they were obviously there to re-populate, knowing well that they were likely many years in the future.....why are they shocked that the theory is right?

Yeah, the director and the DP work together on
shot composition.  It's funny you should mention
this.  Someone asked Shaffner why he was spending
so much time wondering around in the desert.  "Because",
ha said, "it sets the tone for the whole film."  I have to
agree with him.  Though I have skipped it before, it is an
important part of the movie, especially the first viewing.

I reread the comic and I definately would not agree with this statement. It is well written, sometimes it takes me awhile to understand stories in comics. I particularly like the council scene with Urko and Zaius. I prefer the comics that are about "Planet" but Neil is doing a good job with the TV series. Elaine

That's great. But, until you show us something so wonderful with your

somewhat an authority because I have been READING comics and scripts

Did they make more than one series of these?  The ones I have are 9-10" tall and they made Thade, Attar and Leo.  I picked most of them up when the stores were reducing costs to move stock for about $20 or less, just can't see these worth $50 each unless there are others I'm not aware of.

For some reason I could not get the pictures to open.

I joined another Planet of the Apes group recently and they have a
picture in their main page that has some ape heads cut out and
pasted over bush and the vice president and a title: Ape Of The
      Nation.

I hope whatever you have sent a link to is not as stupid as that.

Why would anyone think that is funny? I don't mean to be critical
but I was hoping for more from Ape groups. I am thinking I might
start my own group if anyone is interested let me know please.
