Yeah - Mustapha didn't get to sit on the throne at Alcatraz by trusting every stranger his plebs drag in.

Pete proved himself to the lesser intelligent foot-soldiers, but he could have a few issues proving himself to the madman dictator responsible for all these carcasses (and the creative way they are decorating the path to Alcatraz).

Again it is not explained at length (and may never be), but Mustapha's people are a brainwashed cult.  He rules as Hitler did by spreading lies and propaganda about the apes (who admittedly deserve to be loathed and detested by humans - but to this degree?).

There is definitely a whole new story all about Mustapha and his followers but the most important story - the conclusion of the adventures of the 3 stooges.....I mean fugitives, is being told first.

If a publisher picks it up the idea is to get on with some adventures of the new gang and also to get some more stories about the 3 fugitives going.

I was actually hoping to release the "prequels to the comic" out of sequence but with the appropriate titles......eg release an adventure that is placed where episode 28 of the TV Show (as per my own personal map) would have gone as "Issue #28".

Then maybe a few moths down the path release "Issue # 45" etc so peolpe are getting self contained stories, that take on a new life after you have collected a certain amount of them and re-read them in sequence.

Michael (Nigel is pruning himself again!).

-- Very true!

>  This page and the previous one look absolutely fantastic. Great
attention to detail, Neil. Even though the story doesn't advance
much on these pages, it's worth it to take the time to see the
horrors the SF humans have visited upon the apes who have crossed
their paths. This is the sort of context I was looking for earlier
in the story, to better understand who these people are.

-- Thanks Greg.

remiss if I didn't note that their fickle side is showing
again, though. Two pages ago they said restraints were no longer
necessary for Pete, and now they've gone ahead and thrown him in a
cell! Okay, so maybe Mustapha doesn't have a proper waiting room,
but still! Way to welcome the guy into the tribe! :)

-- Simple answer to this one Greg. He may have won over the rebels
who were with him and witnessed the 'incident' but he is still
Mustapha's prisoner and as such is going to be held as a prisoner
until the big man himself says whether he can be trusted or not.

Jeez - anyone who thinks the term SPLITTERS, in the context of the way I referred to it in the group, is an insult, would have to have an agenda!

The point of the sketch in THE LIFE OF BRIAN is that while the various cliques that have formed hate each other blindly (and probably go around killing each other "for the cause"), they are really all the same and from the same and will become the same (as do we all in the end).

In the sketch, the group discussing it actually forget their own title!

Calling previous members "splitters" is very funny - well if you have a fucking sense of humour it is. It is poking fun at myself, the DG, and all the splitters and splinters who take themselves too seriously.

And for this I do NOT apologize.

POTADG, POTAEXTREME, POTAPHENOMENON, SIMIAN SCROLLS, APE CHRONICLES.....etc. Same shit, different name. Work that out you fucking idiots and stop ruining something wonderful because you have to fight or because you have to control - is that basic message from POTA too subtle for you?

Nigel (Michael's assistant) - Michael is VERY busy at the moment! :)

Yeah, that's what I thought about that Sardi's Kim Hunter

Because of the recent spate of what must be fake posters I will, in
the next week or so, be 'culling' the group numbers again in order to
hopefully get rid of any of these potential trouble makers.

So if you get accidently removed from the group I apologise in
advance, if it does happen to you please let me know so I can fix
    things up!

    Thanks,

It's just the packaging as far as I know.  The new cover are terrible.  Has anyone posted them here yet?  I have the sequel scans in my computer.

The Aussie sense of "humour" can be rather strange.  I watched this show for the first time this weekend.  It was called "Kath & Kim", I think.  At first I thought it was British, but then I came to realize it was fucking Australian!

-- No its nothing like that Rory, I definitely wouldn't apply any kind
of censorship, I just meant that some names that I don't recognise
      could get removed.
There are members who's emails have been regularly bouncing for the

As I said anyone who does find they have been removed in error just

Gee Rory I almost thought you were going to have something interesting
to say here but obviously not. So are you going to explain to everyone

As far as I am concerned these sort of replies are getting tedious and

The very best VHS covers were the ones Ken Taylor produced for the Australian release of the TV Show.

Greg Plonowski used these covers to make printable DVD covers for the DVDs.  I think these are available on Hunter Goatley's site (could anyone here NOT know Hunter's site?).

Frankly, MOST of the VHS and DVD covers I have seen for the movies do not please me.

I think the studios should get onto this and create sites where clients can legally download alternative covers.

How about we all list our top 5 DVD and video covers used for each of
the movies? I would be very interested to know which ones fellow fans
hold in high regard (if any!)

I had an idea for the group comic project.
How about we have the same start as Planet up until when Taylor
decides which way to travel and have him choose the opposite
                    direction.
That way they don't meet the Ape society seen in the film but could
end up meeting a totally different group of apes.

I know Rory is well versed in the history of VHS (and Beta?) releases of POTA.

I nearly burst when I saw an ad in a US magazine for the first release of PLANET and.....I think ALL the sequels (Rory?).  Anyway, I begged my father to get them.

He sent a personal cheque to the USA and we waited.

After two months we phoned the USA and got some bad news:

The cheque was not in US Dollars and the VHS (or Beta actually) tape would not play in Australia!

So it took me until 1994 to own the 5 movies on tape.

Hey - let's list the top 5 ways we "experienced" PLANET OF THE APES as kids!

                    (1) POWER RECORDS
                    (2) CURTIS MAGAZINES
                    (3) CASSETTE TAPE FROM THE TV AIRINGS
                    (4) TOYS AND COLLECTIBLES
                    (5) BOOKS AND OTHER MAGAZINES

How about the rest of you?

                    Michael

                              .html
Hi John and thanks for the comment!

Let me just clarify something for you.

I am writing GOING HOME because I have to.

WHO SHOULD BE WRITING POTA COMICS?

                              (A) Fan Produced Comics

My first choice as writer would have been the wonderful Dave Ballard. He is
a master - and much like DARTH VADER he will always be talented even when
he's tickling for the other team! ;) Not only that but he is quick as hell
and dedicated. He's a writer (or I should say he claims to be - and takes
                              himself seriously as a writer). I don't fancy myself as a writer - I don't
take myself seriously as a writer. I know Ty Templeton does, because he
labelled me as such on the letters page of Revolution Issue #1 (thanks Ty!
                              xoxoxox) :)

My second choice would be any bastard who actually does it and sends it to
                              me! :)

                              (B) Professional Comics

As for the REVOLUTION comics - really, who could ask for a bigger name than
Ty? Who would have expected it? I really did NOT believe it could happen.
He and Jo are doing a magnificent job. They are producing the BEST POTA
comics I have ever paid for. Would be nice to see Ploog get involved and
ideal to see Neil get a gig, but I really could not ask for more.

Ty's dediation and the fact that he seeks our feedback and takes the time to
say "Hi"...we really are very lucky.

                              WHO NEARLY WROTE POTA COMICS?

As "totellawhopper" knows, Neil and I waited patiently for Chris Lawless to
come up with something as a script. Nothing was forthcoming and all we had
was Dave's MONUMENT for which Neil had drawn the first 6 pages at the time
Dave became unavailable. Dave was unhappy with MONUMENT and said in a
public letter we could use it, but it required a re-write. I did NOT want
to touch it. MONUMENT is a great TV Show episode, but that's not really
what I wanted to do. I love the TV Show and I have fond memories of it but
I can barely stay awake through an episode now - so why would I want to try
to sell an ongoing episode to a publisher?

Chris Lawless eventually came up with a few pages of something (set in the
PLANET enviromnent) but one thing was clear - we could not rely on Chris to
                              meet a deadline.

AND we wanted to do a TV Show comic (but like I said, not just another
                              episode).

We had a team of people to help write a TV Comic. Rich Handley (I think he
wrote a SW comic? - bichandjon seems to know more about this than I do!),
Chris Lawless, John Roache, Dave Ballard, myself and Neil.

Neil, would it be fair to say that overall this group spent most of their
time explaining to us why they could NOT produce anything? I think they
expended more energy on excuses than they ever could have on actually DOING
                              something!

The plan was to map out the events of the TV Show for the next 30 years or
so (eg at the end of our virtual scenario's 4th season the astros find
another ship with more astros who have been around for a lot longer...etc).

But the result was that Neil and I were left to either do it ourselves, or
to crap on about why we couldn't do it. We chose to do it. Hmm... that
                              sounds dirty!

                              WHO IS WRITING POTA COMICS?

I began writing the WITHIN comic because it didn't matter - this was a
"throw away" to keep Neil busy and to generate discussion. It is
embarrassingly formulaic and stinks of "throw in some mutants", but you know
it does seem to work. It ain't Tolstoy, but it was fun and if I saw it on
the shelf at a comic store I'd buy it and I'd want more.

Anyone who wants to insult me and wonders why they might be pissing Neil off
too - that's probably because we do this as a team. Neil has rejected
scripts (both draft and finalised) I have sent him because they had
problems. I have also suggested layout for a page (p 15 I think?) and Neil
completed the comic with PP 20 - 22.

We are constantly looking for more writers so cough up ya bastards! :)

This has got to be the saddest story I've ever heard.  You poor Aussie bastard.

Well, that's what you get for living on the wrong side of the planet!

Those are the best covers the TV show has had, no doubt of that!

Hey, Michael, do you have the original PLANET LP?

I know Rory is well versed in the history of VHS (and Beta?) releases of POTA.

I nearly burst when I saw an ad in a US magazine for the first release of PLANET and.....I think ALL the sequels (Rory?).  Anyway, I begged my father to get them.

He sent a personal cheque to the USA and we waited.

After two months we phoned the USA and got some bad news:

The cheque was not in US Dollars and the VHS (or Beta actually) tape would not play in Australia!

So it took me until 1994 to own the 5 movies on tape.

This has got to be the saddest story I've ever heard.  You poor Aussie bastard.

Those are the best covers the TV show has had, no doubt of that!

Hey, Michael, do you have the original PLANET LP?

I don't see it saying anywhere that it was DUE to the on-line petition.

I seriously do hope it was because what did it get – 100 signatories?

Hell yes I share your cynicism... I just replied to this "news" because it was posted to the friends_and_fugitives group... Cynical isn't the word for it... It had NOTHING to do with the online petition and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that they were going to release it anyway and that the "petition" just happened to be started at the time of the release of it... The "petition" coincided with the release of an item that was surely being manufactured before anyone even began requesting it "online"...

So claiming it was the petition that did it would be kinda....well.....what would be one's motivation?

They're definitely my favorites. I bid on several different VHS sets even though I knew I couldn't play the tapes just to try and get the packaging.

I agree with Rory on the movie wraps, though. They should use the original one-sheets.
