It would have been cooler had it shown them making these costumes and explained them a bit better.

AND the pilot was actually pretty good!  Then it kinda slips away.....

Okay!

Yeah, it was nice to see the signal mirror, but unless there's an ape garrison nearby, it seems weird to have one on the outskirts of the city like that... Are you implying that there's an ape base near SF now? Otherwise, if there's no ape civilization close to it, the mirror is pointless, cause there'd be no apes to read it...

And yeah, the action is cool, BUT, where did those guys get the ancient firearms? Did they find a vacuum sealed munitions dump nearby? They surely can't have the technology in  their hands to just make things like that...

Thanks Mike.

OK - here's something Neil and I laboured over too.

If you look at the map you will see that there is not a lot nearby.  Central city is sure a long way off.  Without going into great detail, the soldiers have been hot on their trail.  The outcome of the council meeting was going to be either:

(1) let Galen come back forgiven;  or

(2 bring Galen back in chains.

Either way - they are not being half-assed about it.  They know the fugitives always get away (! :) and this time they are breaking taboo and going into a city that is forbidden - with supersticious tales attached to it - strange rumblings (and you thought they were earthquakes!) and (ripped off from battles) scouts going missing/losing their marbles.

As I see it the gorillas in the landslide ambush are scouts hot on the tail of the fugitives and they got off a message to the others who came in force to await orders.

So yes, they are camped there - assembled in wait of orders.

Michael

Hi Tom.

VERY different.

Essentially, it would be more violent and frightening and less "kiddified".

Off the top of my head there's a different musical score, more violent scenes and a different, more brutal speech from Caesar.

Anyone help me here.

Subject: James Cameron on POTA2001
.html

Aintitcool.com's "Quint" got a cool interview with James Cameron in Santa Barbera where he was picking up an award. Cameron talks about what he's learned doing documentaries, his love of the new 3D technology, and his thoughts on a couple of recent Fox movies.
Cameron was going to develop a new "Alien" movie (with Ridley Scott!) for Fox but got his toes stepped on when Fox decided to do recent "Alien vs. Predator" movie (a movie Cameron happened to like). This brought back memories of another project Cameron tried to get going for Fox...POTA. Says he:
"I had a great idea with "Planet of the Apes", but it was Fox's asset. Even though I was supposedly developing it we didn't see eye to eye and they sort of picked up their marbles and that was that. They turned out, I think, possibly the most egregious film that they could have on that subject because they miscast the director. It's the only Tim Burton film that I don't like". Though Cameron says of Tim Roth's performance of Thade, "He's stunning!" To read more of Cameron's comments on filmmaking in 2006, go to:  http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=22405  .
I would probably pick Cameron as the top director of science fiction movies of the last two decades, in terms of a nuts and bolts serious approach that is still fun and entertaining. It still blows my mind that Fox spent a decade turning down the ideas of guys like Cameron and Oliver Stone (and, apparently, what Burton REALLY wanted to do). What exactly was Fox's idea that was so precious. The only thing I can think of is they wanted a "happy" family movie and those guys might have upset the apple cart by doing something serious and relevant. Whatever.
Cameron has spent almost a decade since his last film working on other projects, developing new technologies, and now he's ready to get back in the director's chair for his first science- fiction movie since "Terminator 2" 15 years ago. It's the mysterious Project 880 (which many think is his dream project "Avatar", not least because last summer he got the rights for www.avatarmovie.com ). His plan is to introduce this world as an online game to get people familiar with it before the movie comes out. He also wants to do a movie of the manga "Battle Angel Alita". He's got a total of 5 movies lined up, all in 3D. The first one ("Avatar"?) hits in 2007. Personally, I can't wait. - - - Jeff

No.

It can't be found anywhere - who even knows if FOX has it somewhere (they SHOULD).

It was shown test audiences pre-release and it scared the shit out of quite a few people - to the point that they re-vamped it!

No, the score's not a different score, it's just the same score and more! (Check out the CONQUEST soundtrack CD for all of the music that WAS supposed to be used...)

As far as a different speech, again, same thing as in the film, but it was supposed to end at the "And that day is upon you now!!!" line and not have the tacked on bullshit ending...

Should be a good start, Darkhorse did something similar with their
StarWars comics a few years ago. A small difference in the narrative
early on leads to huge differences down the line. I suppose the
discussion on the group will come down to what type of ape society
Taylor will meet? Will it be totally different or close to the
classic one. Is there much communication across the world? One
thought is ,as Taylor is pretty misanthropic at the start of the
film almost needing something to rage against, what would his
reaction to a more benevolent ape community be? Maybe his behaviour
and actions would not be so heroic and above reproach. Anyway just a
thought, I'm sure we'd both just like to see more Derek Zane
        stories :)
        As always best Graham.

Dark side? What, you want me to become a Starwberry Shortcake fan and start scanning issues of her old comics that Marvel published under their short-lived Star imprint?

What's different about the rental only packaging compared to the retail release?

They're definitely my favorites. I bid on several different VHS sets even though I knew I couldn't play the tapes just to try and get the packaging.

I agree with Rory on the movie wraps, though. They should use the original one-sheets.

Been a while since I read those so I'm not even sure where the storyline ended, but I think it's a great idea to go back and finish it off and/or do new stories with Jason and Alexander.

I also liked Neil's idea of sending Taylor, Dodge and Landon off in a different direction at the beginning of Planet.

Oh, and I liked the two most recent pages of Going Home. As far as the signal device goes, I asumed the troops had brought it with them so they could stay in touch with Central City. And as for the weapons, I assumed they took those from the same gorillas they got those vests from.

It had NOTHING to do with the online petition and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that they were going to release it anyway and that the "petition" just happened to be started at the time of the release of it... The "petition" coincided with the release of an item that was surely being manufactured before anyone even began requesting it "online"...

I never signed the petition because I know damn well Fox is going to do whatever it does despite anything fans want.  Personally, I write my letter and then just hope for the best.

I also consider the theatrical cut of BATTLE the offical version, but now that Fox is putting this out, I guess that is history and the story of BATTLE will have to be revised.  But in any case, BATTLE is my least favorite of the original APES films, and I wish it would just fade into obscurity.  But that ain't gonna happen.

Well, except for the Topps cards, the LP was the first thing I collected from PLANET, back in Oct. of '68, and that cover is the thing I most associate with PLANET, even more than the 1-sheet, which I saw at the theatres, of course, but didn't actually own until I got one in the mid-seventies.

I'm working on a cover for the new PLANET DVD based on the LP cover.

          Hi Tom.

          VERY different.

Essentially, it would be more violent and frightening and less "kiddified".

Off the top of my head there's a different musical score, more violent scenes and a different, more brutal speech from Caesar.

          Anyone help me here.

          Michael

The musical score is the same, only what we now have is an edited version of it.  Extra cues are on the CD from Film Score Monthly.

Basically, the original cut was a darker, more violent film with a downbeat and even unpleasant ending.  I suggest reading the novelization to get an idea of what it was like.

I went and looked up the word "egregious."  It means "outstanding in bad or evil qualities."

          I prefer my term...

          IT SUCKED!

It still blows my mind that Fox spent a decade turning down the ideas of guys like Cameron and Oliver Stone (and, apparently, what Burton REALLY wanted to do). What exactly was Fox's idea that was so precious.

All you have to do is go read Jane Hamsher's book "Killer Instinct" and find out how the whole "re-imagining" thing started to know how ill-conceived and totally wrong and wicked it all was.  The problem is that those who are executives at the studios simply aren't filmmakers, they're mostly spoiled rich-boys just out of Ivy League schools and just looking to make their first million.  It's easier to make your money producing crap that a gullible public will buy than it is something of quality, so crap is what we get.

This is one of the reasons I've decided I'm definitely not buying that damn Ultimate head thing!

The main things I remember about the original "Conquest" was the beginning (a chimp is gunned down by police) and the end (Breck is killed and Caesar's speech ends on "And that day is upon YOOOOOOU, NOOOOOW!!"; no "We who are not human can afford to be humane" stuff).  - - - Jeff

One of the things that kind of makes CONQUEST "tasteless" is that it's such an obvious analogy to racist White's fears of a Black takeover of society.  The original cut's final line, "And that day is upon you NOOOOW!" is supposed to leave the audience feeling what?  "Look out!  The Blacks might take over any minute and you'll be killed!"  I think that's what some at the studio felt, or al least the negative reaction of the preview audience of kids and their mothers had them fear would be the message.  And so violence was cut and the ending was altered and softened.

Nothing makes me madder than when images from BENEATH slip into covers for PLANET, but it's been happening for years.  Usually any shot of Taylor and Nova on a horse in a PLANET cover is actually from BENEATH.

The 35th Anniversary covers for PLANET actually featured mostly images from BENEATH!  I don't look at it.  I promptly made up my own cover, put that in a case and just put the two DVDs into that, which is exactly what I'm going to do with the new releases.  Those lousy covers just get put into the closet.

I don't think those that work at Fox know or care about these things.

Gee Rory I almost thought you were going to have something interesting
to say here but obviously not. So are you going to explain to everyone
why you think "Urko sucks!" then?

As far as I am concerned these sort of replies are getting tedious and
as it is now my call alone you need to know that you won't be allowed

I think there are a few humans on pota that may feel that Urko sucks. It would be nice to have a more extended answer on why they feel that way. Elaine

Finally... something that interests me.  Yes, would Neil very kindly do some sketches of what he'd like the covers of the APES DVDs to look like if he worked for Fox.  He doesn't even have to consider the original advertising posters and such.  This I'd like to see.

He sent a personal cheque to the USA and we waited.

                  Rory,

I have been accused of sour grapes here but I really have a problem with this.

It really isn't helping the cause if people seriously think a petition to Fox with 126 names on it has really actually made an impact.

                  it is actually quite dangerous.

The truth is, you would need a very large petition and/or a rigid letter writing campaign to make any difference.

Anyone with a brain can see that this was simply a remarkable coincidence.

What would be the motivaton of anyone saying it is anything else?

The "petition" coincided with the release of an item that was surely being manufactured before anyone even began requesting it "online"...

I never signed the petition because I know damn well Fox is going to do whatever it does despite anything fans want.  Personally, I write my letter and then just hope for the best.

I also consider the theatrical cut of BATTLE the offical version, but now that Fox is putting this out, I guess that is history and the story of BATTLE will have to be revised.  But in any case, BATTLE is my least favorite of the original APES films, and I wish it would just fade into obscurity.  But that ain't gonna happen.

                  WHO IS WRITING POTA COMICS?

I began writing the WITHIN comic because it didn't matter - this was a
"throw away" to keep Neil busy and to generate discussion.  It is
embarrassingly formulaic and stinks of "throw in some mutants", but you know
it does seem to work.  It ain't Tolstoy, but it was fun and if I saw it on
the shelf at a comic store I'd buy it and I'd want more.

Anyone who wants to insult me and wonders why they might be pissing Neil off
too - that's probably because we do this as a team.  Neil has rejected
scripts (both draft and finalised) I have sent him because they had
problems.  I have also suggested layout for a page (p 15 I think?) and Neil
completed the comic with PP 20 - 22.

We are constantly looking for more writers so cough up ya bastards! :)

How about we have the same start as Planet up until when Taylor
decides which way to travel and have him choose the opposite
                  direction.
That way they don't meet the Ape society seen in the film but could
end up meeting a totally different group of apes.

Sounds like a great idea. Taylor's life could turn out differently. Elaine
