.html .html.htmlTy,
I had posted an email a few days ago asking whether or not we'd be getting a pin-up from our resident APES artist Neil Foster in an upcoming issue of your APES comic?
So, I'll ask again? Will Neil Foster get a chance to have his work shown in your publication?<.html<.html <.html

I have been sent a few pin-ups over the last couple of weeks, including two excellent pages by Neil, and a marvelous oil painting of the Lawgiver by a girl who's name escapes me right
now, but she's French Canadian, and scary good. I've also just been told the next issue will contain three less pages of editorial content than usual, since our publisher has sold some interior pages for
ads, (comics shops, and online subscriptions services, the usual indy-comics ad pages, etc.). I'll be juggling here and there to find the right balance of pages (still over 28 pages of story and art in every
issue!!).
BELIEVE me, the pin-ups are very much in my mind, and I am looking for a place to put them...possibly the sixth issue, (since we clearly won't need a Next Issue Ad in that one.) Ty

Actually, to be honest, I'm not that confused about the lack of nationalized medical care in the USA (the last Western nation yet to apply that system, making America a third world
nation, in this respect.). I've seen the way the US "President" and the American Senate works on a daily basis....Any federal decision that can enrich rich, bloated white people at the expense of the
general public is automatically given a thumbs up. They sold the public's health care to the insurance companies some years ago, and enjoy the continuing payoffs that flow into the coffers of "re-election
campaigns". It's a fairly simple story, out in the open, and not particularly hard to uncover. Graft, and corruption on an epic scale.
It's like Caligula and Nero aren't just role models to these guys, they're considered AMATEURS! As a student and fan of choas and dystopia, this would be hysterically funny to watch American
crash and burn into the sea, if people in Iraq and New Orleans weren't actually dying because of these incompetent crooks and liars currently in charge.
But I wonder, what's my actual opinion? Ty the Guy. On 3/16/06, Michael Whitty <

Whoops! A fairly important word was accidentally edited out of that rant before I posted it, and I shriek that it has the almost opposite meaning of my original intent, as a result of
that ommission. It should have said, "... this would be hysterically funny to watch American
politician
s crash and burn into the sea..." For some reason, the word "politicians" disappeared between my ranting and my typing. By NO means, would I enjoy watching America, the COUNTRY, crash
and burn into the sea, good LORD no! It's filled with wonderful people and nice mountains and mooses, and my favorite city on Earth (New York!). It gave us Rod Serling, Stan Lee, and the
Beatles...no wait. That was the Monkees.
Anyway. TYPO. TYPO...TYPO. Ty the Guy. Astounded by the trouble a single missing word can cause. I'm ALREADY being investigated by the CIA.

It's like Caligula and Nero aren't just role models to these guys, they're considered AMATEURS! As a student and fan of choas and dystopia, this would be hysterically funny to watch American

But I wonder, what's my actual opinion?

Whoops! A fairly important word was accidentally
edited out of that rant before I posted it, and I shriek that it has the almost
opposite meaning of my original intent, as a result of that ommission.
It should have said, "... this would be hysterically funny to watch
American politicians crash and burn into the sea..." For some
reason, the word "politicians" disappeared between my ranting and my
typing. By NO means, would I enjoy watching America, the COUNTRY, crash
and burn into the sea, good LORD no! It's filled with wonderful people
and nice mountains and mooses, and my favorite city on Earth (New York!).
It gave us Rod Serling, Stan Lee, and the Beatles...no wait. That was the
Monkees.
Anyway.
TYPO. TYPO...TYPO.

.htmlThanks for that Kirby 'Ape' page Neil.
I'm nearing the end of the "Tales to Astonish "book now and as Ty
mentions, Jacks output inevitably deteriorated towards the end.
Jack was still drawing an incredible 4 pages a day nearing his 70's.
His first page, drawn while he was still full of energy was always top
notch. The second page was OK. Things deteriorated by the third page,
and the fourth was always the worst. Also, by this time Jack had
already deferred some things to be drawn, such as logos on costumes
and stuff like that, to his inker at the time. Towards the end he
tried to have the inker even do more 'corrections', but the inker
balked at this as it was simply to much work for him.
Also, the book repeatedly mentions how Jack desperately wanted the
medical insurance he finally received when working on the Ruby-Spears
animation project. He suffered from severe frostbite during WWII and
nearly lost his legs as a result. His health was failing and he even
had a heart bypass operation that he had to cover up as he was worried
that his income would suffer if word got out.
I'm at the part of the book now where his fight to get back his art
from Marvel really began to heat up and became a 'cause celebre' in
the comic industry. The book details the terrible things Marvel was
doing to him. While Marvel had actually begun to return art to other
artists, Jack was treated very differently because Marvel was standing
on some very shaky ground when it came to the actual copyright on
those many Kirby characters. So Marvel believed that the act of giving
him back his own art could then be used by him to later seek copyright
ownership. It got to the point that Kirby could no longer even go to a
toy store as he knew he would be surround by his many creations and he
wasn't getting a single penny for all that surrounded him. Jack was a
victim of his own success.

I think Bela Lugosi's family took Universal to court over this because of the studio's use of DRACULA, which is so clearly just Lugosi in a cape. They were making money off his image and not paying the
family a dime. I'm not sure how that case turned out though.

I won't disagree with any of this. What's really the outrage is that the people currently in power are truly such morons -- and of course they think they're so morally right about everything!
You know, empires -- and the US is an empire -- they don't decline because of enemies from without, they fall because of the decadence from within, and by "decadence" I don't mean promiscuity or
homosexuality or anything along those lines, I mean big things, like hypocrisy and corruption of the public trust.

.htmlI never heard that about Bela Lugosi, but that was certainly the case
with Boris Karloff and his rendition of Frankenstein. In many cases
(where the detail was good enough) the Frankenstein merchandise was
clearly depictions of the Karloff face (with makeup of course).
I know that the cause was picked up by Karloff's daughter after he
passed away. Not sure of the outcome or even if it's still an ongoing
battle.
This does tie in with POTA, albeit loosely. It was none other than Tim
Burton that directed one of my most favorite movies of all time, "Ed
Wood", which featured the aging Bela. Bela was portrayed by Martin
Landau who went in to (deservedly!) win the Oscar for best supporting
actor that year. I just got the deluxe Ed Wood DVD a few weeks ago.
The Landau/Bela scenes alone make this movie one I can watch over and
over.
Just goes to show how a good script can make a movie and a bad (POTA)
can easily destroy a movie.

No, I haven't heard anything back from him, but that doesn't matter. He has responded twice to James at the "other" POTA group. That means the email address is real and I would guess this

You should send him messages of encouragement. Let him know that you're very interested. He gave me this e-mail address: softparadeband@... Write him.

I would but he doesn't :) It was actually Back issue #15 I bought
with an Art Adams werewolf cover. Quite a lot of the issue is about
Marvel's Werewolf by Night title so the Ploog interview concentrates
on that. Ploog also had an interview in the latest Comics journal
which was much more wide rangeing but sadly again doesn't go into
detail about Terror.
Best wishes Graham. <.html

My guess is Russo is the "name" associated with the book, because he has the most recognized name of the three... I'd guess more APES fans have at least heard of Joe compared to Larry and/or Ed...

Ed Gross is a very respected genre journalist, who's written books on Star Trek, Star Wars, POTA, and many many other shows, and related subjects. His book TREK NAVIGATOR is
probably my favorite Trek book of the last ten years.
In fact, I tend to think of the Apes book we're discussing, as Ed's book, with help from the other two. I've corresponded with Ed a couple of times looking for info about the POTA, and have found his vast
knowledge incredibly helpful.
My two cents. Ty On 3/18/06,

I'll agree the ape make up in Spaceballs is excellent. It might be the last time used in a movie, but I'll bet the actual last time was for the episode of Saturday Night Live
hosted by Charlton Heston in 1993, for which the people at SNL made up the ENTIRE AUDIENCE to look like POTA characters, make up, costumes, hair, everything. It's probably the most expensive episode of SNL
ever shot, simply because of the opening sequence (which is about ten minutes long, and features Chris Farley, Heston, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Michael McKean, etc. and the audience of at least fifty people, all in
either ape make up, or future human rags.)

It's funny you should ask that, as I was just discussing this same
subject with someone else today. I co-wrote an article on
Spaceballs' 17th anniversary (sounds odd, I know...we figured it was
a whacky anniversary to celebrate, so it was fitting) for Star Wars
Insider magazine that ended up not being published for a number of
reasons. For the article, I interviewed several actors from the
movie, and one of the things that came up while speaking with John
Hurt (name dropper!) was the POTA makeup. I was told that they were
granted permission to borrow some actual props from the movies,
though I don't know who was on the lending end. <.html

I didn't even know about them.
Charlton Heston wrote the forward.
He get's mentioned quite a bit. A
lot of us were listed in Brian Pendreigh's
book, and we mention ourselves a lot.
No one ever mentions Robert Anderson's
book, The Unofficial Journey To The Planet
Of The Apes. Maybe because no one has it.
I know I don't. Anyone ever read that one?

Ty
From what I know, Joe Russo and Larry Landsman did the research for the book way back in the early eighties, interviewing anyone they could get in touch with -- most of which was recorded on cassette, which I've
heard parts of -- and by hanging out at Natalie Trundy's house which was the house she lived in with Arthur Jacobs and still held at that time all his personal papers. They rented a copy machine and spent days
copying anything they could find related to APES. Russo still has this stuff and every so often he'll pull something out and read it to me over the phone, and it's fascinating, such as daily production
sheets from the films that tell you exactly when shots were taken and who was on the set, and things like the original treatment to CONQUEST, which was going to be a much more elaborate production than what ended up
being made, such as beginning with showing, via video news clips, the plague on dogs and cats.
Russo and Landsman also wrote the majority of the text of the book. Edward Gross was hired by the publishers to do a professional polish on what was the "amateur" writing of the two fans that did most of
the work. That's the true story. The book is basically the work of Russo and Landsman, and Landsman now is not interested in doing a further book, only Russo is.

Oh, I disagree. Considering the budget and constraints of live TV, SNL did an excellent job with the make up, costumes, sets and props. This probably cost them a hundred grand or
more, for a ten minute sketch, they made up at least fifty actors/extras, re-shot the entire Saturday Night Live opening sequence (I think the entire band is made up as gorilla soldiers, I'll have to check my copy,
I haven't watched it months) and rebuilt the SNL set to look like Ape City. It's probably my favorite POTA cameo ever. I like it better than their appearances on the Simpsons or the Spaceballs movie.
PLUS, it has Heston running through the sketch shouting "It's a MADHOUSE". Wonderful. Ty On 3/19/06,

The make-ups in that skit are HORRIBLE!!!! Have you ever really looked at it?!? The cloting is decent, but the make-ups suck!

In fact, I tend to think of the Apes book we're discussing, as Ed's book, with help from the other two. I've corresponded with Ed a couple of times looking for info about the POTA, and have found his vast
knowledge incredibly helpful.
My two cents.

I never saw that SNL apes episode, does anybody here have it copied to a
DVD and willing to share with the group? Or sell?
I have been out of commission for months, but when I left I heard an apes
rarity DVD was in the works by hunter, was that completed? If so can I get a
copy? If it wasn't completed is it currently in the works?
Thanks

It's not like Fox had a legal position. Copyright infringement requires that you lift characters or dialogue directly. You can't trademark a basic IDEA. The thought
that an apocalyptic war destroys humanity, and animals rise up and learn to talk is CLEARLY based on POTA, but not close enough to be legally troubling.
It was the Statue of Liberty shot (included at the publisher's urging, by the way) that cements the obvious attempt to lure POTA fans to DC's Kamandi. Kirby didn't want to do the statue, since it
WAS so obviously ripping of POTA (whether it was a common feature on pulp covers is irrelevant, Jack knew what the image was doing on the cover of Kamandi #1), and complained about it in at least one interview I've
read.
HOWEVER...
Kamandi QUICKLY gets away from talking gorillas, and ruined New York, and quickly turns into Kirby's own world of imagination. Talking tigers, snakes and bears become more common than talking gorillas, and
eventually we get a set of mutants that can turn into human missiles as their form of mutation (instead of bomb worship and googly skin, these guys actually transformed into living missiles, with Silver Surfer like
features). If you ever read Kirby's 2001 series in the mid eighties, you'd know he rarely sticks to the source material very long, his own imagination was unrestrainable.

Not exactly POTA-like but it does have mute human 'animals' talking
animals (Tigers, Gorillas etc.) Bomb worship, a ruined Statue of
Liberty and such. ;-)
Neil
And Fox let him get away with that?

morphed into Machine Man by the 8th issue! I remember reading it in
the mid seventies though ;-)

I have a copy ( on dvd, as a matter of fact) but it's not an "official release" or anything, simply taken off of an aired version of the episode with a home DVD burner.
I have absolutely NO idea how to convert it to an mpeg or anything technical like that, since I'm a writer/artist and not a techy. (I have MOST of the 600 or more SNL episodes on DVD or video. SNL is
another of my long standing fandoms. As a result, I have the Heston episode, the Shatner one, the Patrick Stewart one, the Anthony Perkins, etc. etc. with all the fun genre sketches that have been done over the
years.)
The sketch is at least ten minutes long in total, and WAAAAY to long to send over the net.
HOWEVER, Hunter Goatley has a few tiny clips of the show on his website (or at least in the multi media subsite) and you can at least see it there.

Kamandi does find his own Nova, actually, rather quickly. I seem to remember her name is "flower" or "violet" or something floral. I could go check the
issues, but they're in another room...She also happened to be topless, with strategically placed hair in every panel. To a thirteen year old reader, that was more memorable than her name.

Seems they resolved who's ending it was.
Though they don't come out and say it,
Since the article is about Serling's writings
being archived at Ithaca College it's likely
in favor of him. Who else could it be.
An examination of the evolution of Serling's screenplay for the 1967 film
"Planet of the Apes" by Gordon Webb, assistant professor of television-radio at
Ithaca College. Based on material from the Rod Serling Archives and interviews
with people involved in the film, Webb's research settled once and for all the
issue of who first conjured up the movie's classic twist ending.

An examination of the evolution of Serling's screenplay for the 1967 film "Planet of the
Apes" by Gordon Webb, assistant professor of television-radio at Ithaca College. Based on material from the Rod Serling Archives and interviews with people involved in the film, Webb's research settled once and
for all the issue of who first conjured up the movie's classic twist ending.
Years ago Mort Abrahams said the ending was Serling's. Why can't people just believe what Abrahams said?

.html Neil, I can see that the names of the astronauts on the left
are "VIRDON" and "BURKE", but I can't quite make out the names of the
two characters on the right. If you have the original, can you
read 'em or perhaps scan 'em in at a higher resolution?
Funny how "Burke" doesn't look anything like James Naughton; I'm sure
the gals at the FRIENDS & FUGITIVES site wouldn't like this comic
very much!
If Kirby had gotten as weird with POTA as he did with his comic book
sequels to "2001", it would've been a straaaaaaange addition to any
POTA collection...

It's been announced that the old show
"Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp" will be available on DVD June 13th. It's the
complete series on a 2 disc set. It was a spy spoof using real chimps dressed in
costumes and was on around the time of POTA's prime. Probably not very PC today
but I know some Ape fans have been waiting.
