Well good... Loan him your comic (since it's probably 'public domain' by now) and let his team translate it and all and they can sell it too...

Hah!  Ty is ALWAYS right, it's a curse, really.

Anyway, as I said before, when mentioning this comic, it's not a particularly visual story, or filled with the sort of burning airplanes and shooting that a comic book story needs.  There are certain specifics of the genre that the Boulle novel lack, and I've never thought it would make a particularly good comic story.  Much like 2001 would make a lousy comic.  As would Hitchhiker's Guide....oh, wait, didn't they make lousy comics out of both of those books?

Anyway, speaking of burning airplanes, I thought I'd toss this burning airplane on the fire, it's the final proof of the cover for RPOTA #3, sent off to the printers last week, and we tap our fingers around here waiting.  ALSO included is the splash page to the Circus Caesar story that's just so pretty I send it out to anyone who is willing to look at it.

    Ty the Guy.

Not something MR COMICS would be too interested in I think, BUT....the reason I got it was to hoard it.  NO WAIT....I mean to share it with the world.

Neil and I are deciding what to do, and how best to do it, as I type.

Hey – don’t be shy about sending us your fave page of Fowler’s story.....we will force ourselves to look at it.....one with orangs and chimps and gorillas on the same page would be PERFECT!  J

Sorry if I seem demanding, but as much as I have enjoyed issue #1 and #2, I am really hanging for #3 to see Fowler’s effort in colour....

Oh, wait til you see the third issue then.  Lots of scenes with all three ape groups, including a couple of fun little ape riots, and armies clashing.  We really ramp it up in issue #3.

But you're just going to have to wait, sorry.  All of the pages would reveal too much.

Probably the addition of the cartoons pushed out those other things (the Japanese didn't get the cartoons in their "Ultimate", right?). We could've done without the Burton stuff but Fox wants to promote it as part of the saga. - - - Jeff

I donÂ’t think the left hand knows what the right hand is doing.

Geez , I know for a fact it was a MASSIVE discovery there that they had a BATTLE extended edition.  I doubt they know where to look for things and they need a list for the 40th anniversary!  J

They also need a list of new people (eg Russo) to talk to about liner notes etc.

I had lunch with Booth Colman this weekend. I asked him about a sauna scene that's in the script of "The Interrogation" that kind of remakes the scene in "Beneath". He said they didn't film it. So in a script doesn't mean filmed. And Bill Blake's scene was a last minute addition so it wasn't in the script. - - - Jeff

If you really want a favorable response, then send one (or 2 at the

    Ask for them.

While I cannot say what his actions would be, I know that if I were to
be bombarded with peky emails I'd have a filter (automatic delete) up
very quickly. Wouldn't that just be great? The one person able to
service POTA fans, having to put in place a filter that automatically

Treat that person as You would like to be treated. Making him hate

"Mesmerizes" is misspelled "mezmerises" on your circus poster, so someone in your vicinity is NOT always right.

Yup.  Graphic novel with extras....such as the work we did back when THADE was originally going to be included in the story, (including a GREAT Thade/Caesar cover that we can't use anywhere else) and pages of art by Richard Pace, rejected covers, a different splash page for #1, etc. etc. etc.  Tom Fowler's monkey drawings, lots of fun stuff.

ALSO:  You know, I never noticed the misspelling of mesmerized.  What kind of an editor am I?  Oh well, it's already at the printers so there's nothing to do...perhaps it's because Salgood Sam lives in Quebec.  Is it spelled with a "Z" in French?  Perhaps?

Since the root of the word is a man's surname, only the ending would change in other countries. "Mesmerise" would be correct in most of the world outside North America.

It's funny a lot of Kirby work from the 70's I like more now than I
did as a teenager. Something of Kirby always came through the work
some how even if it wasn't a hundred percent successful. The 2001
tabloid was a prime example. The dawn of man pages are great. I dread
to think how many pages he was knocking out at this stage sheer back
breaking work. Have you seen his Prisoner pages Neil? (best stop there
don't want to upset people with too much off topic chin wagging)
    Best Graham.

    --

Here are some of the questions members emailed and IMed me last night. I apologize if some of these topics were already covered in the chat.

Will this series be collected for a trade paperback, and, if so, will there be any extras?

The plan right now is for a trade paperback of the first six.  I hope there are extras ? galleries and sketches and stuff

How hopeful can we be of more series?

Entirely dependent on sales.  We?d love to do more, and there are always more stories to tell in the APES universe.

Have you seen the Extended version of BATTLE and did it influence your story at all?

Well, I?ve seen it now, thanks to you J   I hadn?t seen it when we started working on the series, but I was aware of the elements that were cut.  They did have some influence on the development of the plot, but you?ll have to wait until issue five (which I?m writing now) to see how all those elements come into play.

How much freedom did you have with your scripts---Marvel seem to have had some problems with clearing certain things with Fox.

The only things that Fox has asked us to tone down are language and violence; they?re adamant that APES remain a PG, family-friendly franchise.  We also don?t have clearance for actor?s likenesses, but that doesn?t affect me at a script level.

Please, please, please can we have at least one short story based on the TV Series!

No no no.  But thanks for asking politely.

Was black and white ever considered or was it always going to be a color book?

More of a Ty question, but as far as I know we never considered going B&W.  It was always conceived as a colour book.

Would you be allowed to re-visit the Marvel sagas, Terror and Future History Chronicles,or would that be outside your license?

I suspect it would be outside our license, but we?re more interested in striking our own unique interpretation of the APES saga, rather than dealing with someone else?s.  So far, the response to our take has been overwhelmingly positive.

Did you ever see the Malibu/Adventure series, which, for all its faults, ran for 24 regular issues and several mini series?

We looked at pretty much ever comics incarnation of APES before us.

Will we see Ty Templeton's art on any of these strips---your work on Spider-Man-Human Torch(especially your rendition of Black Cat!) has left us panting for more!

I keep pushing him to do a story, but between editing my scripts, writing the backups and overseeing production on every issue (not to mention his regular work for Marvel, DC and THE SIMPSONS comics), there?s not much time left in the day.  Maybe if he ate and slept at the same time . . .

Do you have any idea how grateful us Apes fans are to you guys for bringing Apes back?

Do you have any idea how grateful we are that you?re reading it?  And LIKING it?

    How did Metallic Rose start?

    We planted a metallic bud.

Whose idea was it to do a POTA comic?

It was Ty?s initial suggestion, I think.  We were looking at various licenses, and that one really struck a chord.

How did they sell 20th on the idea?

    Again, Ty question.

    How was the talent assembled?

Ty?s rolodex.  He hired people he knew whose work he liked.

Why did they choose the timeframe between "Conquest" and " Battle "?

It?s the great untold story of the APES saga.  I can?t believe no one tackled it before!

How will they decide whether or not they do more POTA comics after this series?

It all comes down to sales.  SO GET OUT THERE AND BUY THIS COMIC!

How easy (or difficult) was it to obtain the POTA licence?

    Ty question for sure.

Do FOX have much of a say in what you can and cannot do?

Fox has complete oversight on everything we do.  They approve everything with the APES logo on it.  They?re Fox?s toys; we just get to play with them.

Has there ever been any hint from FOX of new APES projects (other than your own) being in development

Well, they?re quite supportive of the franchise (see the mega-DVD box set coming out later this year).  But I don?t know if they?re planning on making more movies or anything ? the last time they tried it things didn?t work out so well.

Who are Mr Comics and how are they different from Metallic Rose?

MR Comics is a division of Metallic Rose.

Is ?Revolution? still set in an alternate version of the 90?s?

It?s set in an alternate present consistent with CONQUEST, with bits added.  We know so much more about the 90s now than we did in the 70s, don?t you think?  Anyway, no matter when they?re set, all the APES movies are about us, right now.  They?re political and social satire, and that?s been the aspect of the series we?ve tried to stay most true to.

Can you give any hints for what may be in the pipeline

Nope.  It?s a secret.  You have to buy issues 3-6.

You helped resurrect the RoboCop franchise for TV - Have you any similar plans for APES?

It?s not my call, but if someone offered me the gig I?d take it in a heartbeat.  I like monkeys.

    Cheers,

    Joe

How would I know?  I very rarely watch THE SIMPSONS.  I got tired of it years ago.  I really think its satire is much too forced, and not only that but it's really kind of unpleasant.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

And now, let's get back to this orgy of comic mania that's running APES into the ground, and turning Boulle into a monkey!

How would I know?  I very rarely watch THE SIMPSONS.  I got tired of it years ago.  I really think its satire is much too forced, and not only that but it's really kind of unpleasant.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

Yup.  That's the plans.  We have a ton of "extras" stuff already, and we're only finished the first three issues.  (#4 is yet to be coloured, but it's all drawn!)

How hopeful can we be of more series?

Entirely dependent on sales.  We?d love to do more, and there are always more stories to tell in the APES universe.

This sounds like a plug, but nowadays, ALL the eggs seem to go into the graphic novel basket.  Many series live and die on the sales of the graphic novels.  They seem to get into more outlets (bookstores, variety stores, etc.) than regular comics do...and we're looking to see what kind of numbers the novel does.  So the answer is...we hope it does well enough to warrant another six issues.  We're all having enough fun that the fingers remain permanently crossed.

No, I haven't seen the extended version of Battle.  Joe's told me about the extra scenes ,but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.  I went through a marathon of Apes movies, shows and comics just before we started seriously plotting our own Mr. Comics series, so that I was completely familiar with the source material, but I haven't gone back into the serious research mode since we started, and this version wasn't available to me earlier.  (Although, aren't there missing scenes in Behind the Planet of the Apes from all five movies? I might be wrong about this...)

That's correct.  They've been very very nice to us at Fox, and the only change they've really been strong about is brutal violence "on panel".  Nobody gets their arms ripped off, or skull crushed ON panel....though there's quite a bit of that sort of thing implied all through our story.  Personally, I prefer the Apes to be true to their original "feel" and wouldn't WANT to include NC-17 elements to the stories, but they have asked us twice to tone down a particularly violent moment.  *(Both scenes remain intact from the script, by the way, we just had our artist "pull away" from the viscera a bit.)

Please, please, please can we have at least one short story based on the TV Series!

No no no.  But thanks for asking politely.

The TV show has a very different reputation in North America than it seems to have on the British side of the pond.   While I'm perfectly happy to consider the TV show as cannon, there's no particular need to visit that era in our storyline.  We're telling the story of Caesar's early days of his reign, and that keeps us firmly in the world of the movies.

Was black and white ever considered or was it always going to be a color book?

More of a Ty question, but as far as I know we never considered going B&W.  It was always conceived as a colour book.

Never considered it at the beginning, but every now and then, I see some of the pages we get from Salgood Sam, and they're SO pretty in black and white, that I'm tempted to run one of his stories in black and white, for nostalgia's sake.  I darn near did that with his back up story in #3 (which was GORGEOUS in black and white) until I saw how #@)(*$# gorgeous it became in colour!

Believe it or not, I think we WOULD be allowed to revisit their characters, but I'm not that interested in doing that, since it would require a certain level of extra-fandom from any new readers that would be above and beyond the call of duty, no?

Did you ever see the Malibu/Adventure series, which, for all its faults, ran for 24 regular issues and several mini series?

We looked at pretty much ever comics incarnation of APES before us.

I have about half of that run, and most of the mini-series they did after the run.  Kent Burles used to be a neighbour, and we'd run into each other all the time, so I was very aware of the series at first.  ( I think it's possible I inked some pages of a Planet of the Apes story for Adventure to help someone out with deadlines at some point.  We used to do that sort of thing for each other all the time in those days.  My memory is pretty clear about inking a Planet of the Apes story somewhere...I think to help out my roommate Jan, who was an inker for Adventure at the time...)

Maybe if he ate and slept at the same time . . .

Perhaps, perhaps.  I might have the time to draw one of the last two back up stories.  We've already got the WONDERFUL art in for the #4 back up by Sam Agro (TNMT, Looney Tunes, Really Odd Tales) and have assigned the art for #5...so if I have the time, I'll try to draw #6 (which is a fun, sort of "wrap up" back up story.)

Do you have any idea how grateful us Apes fans are to you guys for bringing Apes back?

Do you have any idea how grateful we are that you?re reading it?  And LIKING it?

I've said it before.  Planet of the Apes is my favorite film series.  Some folks love the Star Wars, or the James Bonds, or the Pink Panthers of this world.  But I'm crazy for the Apes.  (All six movies, too!)   I'd be doing this for free.

    How did Metallic Rose start?

    We planted a metallic bud.

    Sheesh!

Whose idea was it to do a POTA comic?

It was Ty?s initial suggestion, I think.  We were looking at various licenses, and that one really struck a chord.

Close, actually.  It was the publisher's suggestion, but when he asked my opinion, I told him that I couldn't be impartial about it, since I was such a fan of the Apes movies. I believe my quote to Steve (our publisher) was, "It's your decision, but I will crawl through glass to get to work on this title if you pick it up."  It's possible that Steve picked up the license because of my enthusiasm, but at the same time, I wanted to make sure any POTA comic coming out wasn't a disappointmen.

How did they sell 20th on the idea?

    Again, Ty question.

I put together a list of creators who I had contacted (along with samples of their work)  PLUS  I created a pitch package of script ideas, and some art, showing the direction Mr. Comics wanted to go.  We went back and forth a bit on direction, and settled on a deal.  Mostly, we went into Fox with good ideas and professional name creators.  Not that complex a story.

    How was the talent assembled?

Ty?s rolodex.  He hired people he knew whose work he liked.

    Dat's it.

Why did they choose the timeframe between "Conquest" and "Battle"?

It?s the great untold story of the APES saga.  I can?t believe no one tackled it before!

Again, dat's it.  But more to the point, it was the best chance to tell a story that we could set in a world that a modern reader would recognize.  That era seemed like the most comfortable fit.

They've been pretty good about it.  We had a bit of a side story going that worked Thade into the meta story of the whole Apes universe, and at first they liked it, but then they changed their minds.  Other than that, they've been great!  No editorial problems to speak of, other than the usual give and take.

Yeah, basically, it's the same universe as the ones you see in the Apes films, except we have the internet, and cable TV and a highly politicized America.  These are things that don't expressly DENY the universe of the movies, but bring the story closer to our world of the nineties and 21st Century than the fourth movie was.

Yeah.  That would be fun.   Imagine Joe and I writing a POTA TV show?  Like the new Battlestar Galactica, only with gorillas instead of Cylons.  You wanna pitch it, Mr. O'Brien?

    Cheers,

    Joe

    Ty

I lost the transition from the initial thread to talking about "Kirby".

    We talking Jack Kirby here?

If so, I just wanted to note that I'm currently reading "Tales to
Astonish" (no it's not an Science Fiction book) which is essentially
about Jack Kirby history, expecially the Marvel years. As it so
happens I'm also reading the very few Kamandi comics I own.
It's been mentioned before but is worth repeating that there is SO
much to the Kamandi story that is basically 'repackaged' POTA. I
haven't gotten around to that era in the book yet, but I'm hoping it
will shed some light as to what inspired Jack when he was doing
    Kamandi.

Michael Jackson To Make Cameo In New Planet Of The Apes Film.
    <<...OLE_Obj...>>

    Written by JimmyMc Poopie <../profile.cfm?uID=3299>

Michael Jackson at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Planet of the Apes confirmed today for a 2008 relese date! None of the cast
members have been chosen for any parts so far except one, Michael Jackson
has been offered a 15 min Cameo in which he will play one of the apes called
Francis John and he will provide Mark Wharlbergs charactor (if he accepts
the part) to a solution to get back to his real time, This will be the first
time these two people have worked together and Michael Jackson is hoping
that they can become good friends and he can invite Mark to sleepovers in
    his Neverland ranch.

The last film released in 2001 ended in America which this new film will
presumingly start from. It is unknown at this point if Mark Wharlberg will
be coming back to reprise his role but offers for cast members will begin in
    the next week or two.

we caught up with Mr Jackson and he told us that since the whole child
molestation case was settled in court he will be glad to put that in the
    past and return to normality.

After talking with Michael Jackson about his cameo in the film we had a
quick chat with director Peter Jackson who has put the HALO movie on hold
due to him just accepting Planet of the apes this past week, heres what he
    had to say.

I have been lucky so far in my career as to have made such films as The Lord
Of The Rings Trilogy and King Kong but i am always trying to push myself to
create bigger and better films for the audience.

When i was handed the script for Planet of the Apes i thought to myself, is
it a bit too soon to be doing another monkey film? but ultimatly decided it
was the right choice to make.
As for the cameo that Michael Jackson was given i thought it was an obvious
choice to make regarding make-up and monkey lessons! as he infact looks and
acts like a monkey anyway (laughs).

    Kamandi.

Yes. This question was put to Marty Abrams at MegoCon 2004. He said that Mego would have had to pay Heston for likeness rights, which were pretty expensive. Since he believed the real attraction of the toys would be the apes, he decided to go with a generic astronaut.

First off, the cover on this week's issue is a total fake-out. You may think we're getting back to the adventures of Jason and Alexander in the Terror storyline, but that actually occurs next week.

This issue actually contains, I assure you, the cataclysmic conclusion of Marvel's adaptation of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

Strangely, the back cover for this issue features a photo of Cornelius and Zira from Escape. But the copy along the bottom of the photo correctly teases the contents of the next issue, unlike the front cover, which is completely wrong.

I don't think they even asked Heston. They probably just played it safe.
Or maybe they did. Mego was probably the first company to do celebrity
figures like Cher, Joe Namath, Fonzie and the cast of "Star Trek". But since
most of the cast were apes, maybe they didn't think a Heston likeness was
important. I think they had the rights to the likenesses of the TV show
actors as part of the contract. The main merchandising was TV show related
and Booth told me the actors had a merchandising agreement (though he never
    saw any money). - - - Jeff

I seem to remember reading somewhere (probably the Jack Kirby
collector ) that after the end of Kirby's New gods Carmine Infantino
(DC comics publisher at the time), noting that Apes was popular
asked him to come up with a similar concept and provided him with a
lot of the early ideas. Infantino has in the past stated that he was
the creator of Kamandi. Now this was always denied by Kirby and the
name Kamandi certainly came from an old newspaper strip that he
created in the 50's but had failed to sell. As you say Neil the
similarity, to certain concepts in POTA, are striking, lets not
forget the Statue Of Liberty on the cover of the first issue !!

    Best Graham.

Well I read the chapter that dealt with the Kamandi part last night
and Graham's description is almost exactly what was in this book.

Jack says that he had the idea for Kamandi sometime in the 50's. While
trying to figure out what to do next at DC (the stuff he really wanted
to work on was not being well received), he mentioned Kamandi to
Infantino. POTA of course had already been released as a movie, but
Jack claims that he had not even seen it. Infantino on the other hand
had seen POTA and loved it. It was Infantino that not only reinforced
the inclusion of many aspects of POTA into Kamandi, but he insisted
that the marquee Statue of Liberty be used on the cover of Kamandi #1.
Jack claims to have only reluctantly gone along. The only other thing
that was mentioned was that Jack originally envisioned Kamandi not as
a young man, but as an older man.

PS: While POTA is only discussed in the part of the book discussing
Kamandi, "Tales to Astonish" is proving to be a very entertaining book
about Jack Kirby and the evolution and history of the comics industry
as a whole. Just my 2 cents.

the 1980's whilst he was doing a lot of work in the animation field he

This issue actually contains, I assure you, the cataclysmic conclusion of Marvel's adaptation of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

Strangely, the back cover for this issue features a photo of Cornelius and Zira from Escape. But the copy along the bottom of the photo correctly teases the contents of the next issue, unlike the front cover, which is completely wrong.

BTW, here in Canada, the book chain Chapters was selling the Hardcover
for only $4.99 (and for some strange reason in the same store they had
the Softcover being sold for full price in another section). When I
mentioned the book to some friends in Montreal however, the could not
find the book at all. Not sure if Chapters book chain is also in the
US, UK or OZ, but it may be worthwhile to check whatever large
bookstores are in your area to see if they also have it going cheap.
In the past when travelling to the US I have found that many of the
books that were overstocked and thus heavily discounted here in
Canada, were the same ones discounted in the US.

Oscar winning actor Benicio Del Toro is to play The Wolf Man!

Del Toro, 39, has signed a deal with Universal Pictures to star in the
movie which will be a new version of the horror classic.

The Wolf Man is set in Victorian England and is about a man (Del Toro)
who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a
werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) is working on a script.  Universal are
hoping for a summer 2008 release.

Del Toro is currently filming Che Guevara biopic Guerrilla for Oscar
    winning director Steven Soderbergh.

Fox made a movie called CHE in 1969 starring Omar Shariff.  Michael Wilson wrote the screenplay!

Anyway, I love the Wolf Man.  Wanna take bets this new version will suck?

For those who care, it's entirely about Heston not releasing his face for licensing.  We can use any likeness for a made up APE actor (since the likeness is technically a creation of Fox), or use any still from the movies (including stills that use Heston's face) but we cannot create new art using Heston's face, or Montelban's or Braeden's faces for that matter.

I have always heard it told that Carmine wanted Jack to do Planet of the Apes (and was willing to buy the license) and Jack wanted to try his sci-fi series Kamandi from the mid-fifties (which was about a Tarzan like character in a world without people, after a great war).  The final DC version of Kamandi, was a hybrid of Kirby's original character, and the imposition of POTA ideas.  Kirby may have claimed in an interview that he hadn't seen the Apes movies, but he has claimed in other interviews that he HAD, and was well aware of the film series when working on Kamandi.  Kirby's memory, throughout most of his life, was spotty at best.

I've always considered Kamandi to be Kirby's 70s masterpiece, and it's the series I have the fondest memories of for that era.  Perhaps it's the connection to POTA, but more likely it was the charming stories themselves, with Ben Boxer, Kerchack, Prince Tuftan and the whole gang.

Well, more to the point, these are sketches from Kirby's much, much, later years, when he's in his late seventies.  As magnificent as Kirby was, in his prime, it's hard to reconcile some of his later work with the stuff he was doing decades earlier.

The problem was that Kirby NEVER thought of himself as an illustrator, but always called himself a storyteller.  He often said didn't likethe drawing so much as he liked telling a story with drawings.  He hated covers, for instance, even though he was phenomenal at them, because they were illustrations, and not stories.

SO, when he became a concept artist/layout artist for Ruby Spears in the Eighties, it was primarily because they paid him twice what Marvel paid him....AND THEY GAVE HIM MEDICAL INSURANCE, which Marvel never did for their freelancers.  (A confused Canadian wonders why the !@#)(#@* the US still uses privatized medicine, but that's a discussion for another day).  It wasn't for a chance for more drawing..

ANYWAY, the work he did for Ruby Spears was storyboards and character designs, and the character designs weren't where Jack's heart lay.  So a combination of disinterest, and the onset of old age, made Kirby's Ruby Spears work, less than his best.  So, no picking on the aging genius, thank you very much.
