Has anyone been to the official site yet? If you stay there long enough it does the best head spinning since Linda Blair. Fox sure has a Booth Colman fetish this time. And check out Nova about to laugh. - - - Jeff

I think they did a good job with the cartoons. The sound is terrific.
It's the first time I've been able to really appreciate the music. The first
three episodes have kind of shoddy prints but after that the picture is
gorgeous. As far as "improvements" for the separate release, they're going
in the opposite direction. The Fox person said they want to put all the
episodes on one DVD. That means less quality, not more. - - - Jeff

There's something to be said for it.
When you're in a waking state the
thoughts just flow.  Some genius
back in the DaVinci / Galileo
days used to go to bed with an
iron ball in his hand over a copper
kettle.  When he got sleepy his
grip relaxed and the ball dropped
and woke him up so he could
write down any ideas that came
to him.  That's a novel approach.

I mean just becasue we see her riding that way in one small part of
the movie does not mean that is how she would always have ridden.

I also asked if there would be any interest in seeing this storyline
done in the Within strip format and I take it from the lack of any
responses that no one does?

Yeah I saw that on Connections or something.
It didn't work for me though.  I unscrewed the
iron ball off a walking stick and held it over
a copper can from some fire lighters.  The
noise was so jarring the start drove what
ever ideas, if any, right out of my head.
Maybe reading a book to sleep will
work.  It usually falls on my face.

I think things are working pretty well in the storyboard format, although I repeat my suggestion that it would be interestung to see them with color added.

If you think the story would be better served by the Within format, then I think that's your call to make as the artist and storyteller, in cooperation with the writer.

Subject: The New DVDs
.html
.html.html OK, Michael Whitty, this info is for your benefit because you asked for it.

I think you already have the Region 4, PAL version of the PLANET 35th Anniversary edition.  If so, you can safely skip the new DVD of PLANET.  Whether in the Ultimate Edition, the Legacy box set, or just separately, the content of the new disc of PLANET is the same: same menus, commentaries, picture and sound transfer.

James in the other group has said he thinks PLANET looks better in this new edition, but I can't see any difference and feel there simply isn't one.  Fox has simply put new artwork on the discs themselves, that's all.

So... if you're looking to save your money -- and don't want the HEAD -- then you're going to want to go with the separate issue DVDs... of the sequels that is!

The transfers of the sequels have been improved.  Besides now being in anamorphic, the transfers are all sharper with better detail and color fidelity.  ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE (even the extended scenes) all look great.  There is a minor problem with BENEATH -- the picture is noticeably brighter than it's ever looked before, however turning down the brightness on your monitor remedies this easily enough if it bothers you.  The color in BENEATH sometimes seems a little over-saturated, but not all the time.  For the most part it looks great.  You may also find that many of the darker scenes in CONQUEST are too dark, but I think this was the look intended when it was made, and again, if it bothers you simply turn up the brightness a bit.  I haven't looked at much of ESCAPE and from what I've seen of BATTLE I can just tell you that everything looks great and the colors really pop.  Hopefully this is what will be released in PAL in Australia.  If so, you won't be disappointed.  On your brother's plasma screen you should be blown away!

I know in Region 4 you already have these films in anamorphic and in PAL, but these new DVDs should be new transfers and if they are what is released in Australia next month (May, I believe), you'll want to check them out.  I don't know if you'll end up simply having to buy the Legacy boxed set anyway, as that may still be cheaper buying them together than buying them separately, but you'll know best what to do.

You'll definitely want these new sequel transfers for the improved sound and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks on the discs.  There is a very apparent improvement in the definition of the stereo separations on all the films, and of course ESCAPE is now in stereo.  The sound of the new scenes in BATTLE has also been cleaned up quite a bit.  What's disappointing is that the music has still been culled from mono sources and has none of the stereo separation or fidelity of what can be heard on the APES soundtrack CDs (it's very center channel dominated), but it's still better than what was put out on DVD before, primarily it is the added bass that turns up in the .1 channel of the Dolby Digital tracks that gives all the films greater audio presence.  The earth splitting open in BENEATH, for example, will now really rumble the room if you have a subwoofer.

So, that's it.  I won't consider buying the NTSC versions, if you have been.  You'll want this new stuff in PAL.

.html.html You all know I'm no great fan of BENEATH, but that doesn't mean I won't defend the film's rights, and I think Fox has egregiously trampled BENEATH's rights with the new DVD cover in the Legacy Box set (and I guess the separate release).

You'll all be able to see what I'm talking about in the attached photo.  It's a scan of the insert sheet that's included inside the DVD case.  On the back of it are the chapter titles for the film, but the egregious part of the artwork is also repeated on the back cover of the case!

Now, what has got me so mad?  Some joker at Fox has apparently thought it would be a cool idea to link the EGREGIOUS (My new favorite word, if you haven't guessed yet) Burton remake-piece-of-crap by putting one of those swords or whatever from the new movie into the hand of a gorilla in General Ursus' army in BENEATH!  You'll see it above the head of the gorilla on horseback in the attached photo.

Now, I don't know about you, but for me this is the kind of a thing that's got to be stopped now before it spreads like a deadly disease!

*** I like Beneath as well... The reason that it is the only sequel actually set on the ape ruled planet is one of the biggest reasons I like it as well... And things like Ursus, the fiery Lawgiver scene, the mask removal, etc. all are cool too...

One of the biggest things I *don't* like about Beneath is the sets fo the mutants headquarters and the church... Those look like sh*t to me... There is WAY TOO MUCH foam applied... I don't know if they were trying to make it look like it was all "melted", but if they did, they failed... And if they were trying to give the appearance of it having become "cave like", they failed there too...***

Maybe that joker put that in there because it was going to be released
on April 4th as an April Fools Joke but then Fox moved the date back
        to the 28th.

There is no such thing as a Western Sidesaddle.
All the saddles on the POTA were English saddles.
English saddles are standard issue for military use.
The reason females ride sidesaddle is the skirt.
The same reason a girl's bike has no top bar
on the frame.  The reason I suggested she
ride one was that young female chimps
wear skirts.  However, as had been
suggested, Zira is a bit of a tomboy.
And there's no reason she couldn't
have altered a pair of her father's
old pants into a pair do riding
        breeches.  But I secretly
        suspect it's because it's
        easier for Neil to draw.

Subject: Dehn intro to Boulle's Planet of the Apes
        .html
        .html Message
I don't know how many of you are aware of, or have seen this. In 1973, in England, Tom Stacey Reprints Ltd. released a new hardback version of Boulle's Planet of the Apes (in fact this was the first time the book was released in the UK with this title instead of Monkey Planet)

Now what is interesting about this version is that it had an introduction by a certain Paul Dehn.
I have included it with this post as I think it makes interesting reading:

Pierre Boulle's two classics – Bridge over the River Kwai and
Planet of the Apes – both served as springboards for films
which vastly increased the already vast circulation achieved by
the novels. But whereas the film-adaptation of Kwai was a fairly
faithful adaptation of Boulle's original, that of Apes was, in one
respect, brilliantly unfaithful and turned a successful novel into
        an international cult.

In the book two space-voyagers (far be it from me to reveal their
identity!) travel to the planet Betelgeuse, which resembles Earth
except in one vital particular. "Evolution has favoured the Simian
species instead of the Human. Man is naked, wild, dumb; Ape is
        clothed, civilised, articulate."

In the film an astronaut (played by Charlton Heston) lands on
what he and his crew believe to be an alien planet – likewise
inhabited by intelligent Apes and dumb Humans – only to
discover that his spaceship has passed through a forward
warp in Time. Riding away from Ape city at the picture's end, he
happens upon New York's Statue of Liberty buried neck-high in
barren, radioactive sand. So he knows that he is on Earth, that
he has seen Earth's fate in the far-distant future and that
Humans will one day lay waste their own planet which will
        thenceforward become dominated by Apes.

This denouement fired the imagination of three audience-groups
who might not otherwise have read the novel: the children,
        because the film (like the book) was top notch Science Fiction;
the student-adolescents, who hated what the Human Race had
become and who "identified" with its rebellious Simian
successors; and the negroes who equated future Ape
        Domination with Black Power.

The film (in whose adaptation I had no hand) was a huge
commercial success and I was asked to script a sequel based
on Boulle's characters. " But," said 20th Century Fox, "This will
be the only sequel." It was not their intention (I took it) to run a
series whose successive titles might one day accrete to the
unmanageability of "Satellite of the Planet of the Sons of Apes
Revisited." So in order to ensure the sequel's absolute finality, I
was given the strict instruction to destroy the entire world (and
with it, a fortiori, the entire cast) at the picture's end. This I
dutifully did; and, six months later, received a cablegram from Fox,
saying: "FILM GREAT SUCCESS FURTHER SEQUEL REQUIRED".

I have now worked on four sequels – each of which, my
producers always promised me, would be positively the last in
the series. But, these days, I always take care to leave my
options open at each screenplay's end. Boulle's two intelligent
chimpanzees Zira and Cornelius, are now dead and so are (my
own inventions) their son, Caesar, and his son, Cornelius II.

The success of the sequels must in honesty be chiefly
attributed to the explosive power of Boulle's original concept as
exemplified in the book you are about to read. The decline and
fall of the Human Race and the upsurgence of Primates able to
speak and reason provide a superb framework for exciting
action, astringent satire, and the gift for prophecy which daily
edges nearer fulfilment. The Human Race is declining. Apes are
being taught by primatologists to solve complex physical
problems, to make reasoned choices, and to communicate with
the Human Beings – so far only by an already sophisticated
        sign-language.

But who knows when an Ape's last grunt will turn into his first
word? Or, indeed, when Man's last word will turn into his first
        grunt?

Since the running time of BATTLE is now 96 minutes, YES!, they've ALL been restored -- and they look and sound better than ever.

On the DVD menu screen it now says "BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Extended Version," so I guess the "theatrical version" is still to be recognized, but for all intent and purpose I think Fox now wants the Extended Version to replace it.

One more thing, from the high quality of the extended scenes, and the cleanup done on the sound, this transfer had to have been prepared and "in the can" long before any petition!

I know that Rory – and I think a few other April foolers knew too.

It really hurt fandom to claim that a last-minute petition with 126 signatures can make a difference.

No.  The only other EGREGIOUS thing -- other than getting photos from the different movies mixed up, which is a long tradition at Fox -- they have a photo of what looks like some real astronauts in space suits on the cover for ESCAPE!

Thanks for sharing that!  Very interesting!  "Lost" words from Dehn.

Then Fox would have to put out a new DVD set:  PLANET OF THE APES Special Editions:  where every flaw has been "digitally corrected."  No more seeing real mouths inside the ape ones, no more Roddy McDowall bare necks, no hatch off the spaceship before it's been blown! Etc, etc.

No more seeing real mouths inside the ape ones, no more Roddy McDowall

i just think that the package designers figure "Apes
is Apes" and they can't tell the difference and don't
think anyone else would either. All DVD's have the
proof of Purchase seal and I have no idea why. Rory
              probably knows...

No, I wouldn't mind it either, as long as the originals were assessable, and the new CGI "retouches" were expertly done.  I'd even like to see the famous final redone.  It almost looked better in that gonzo movie than in the real thing.
