I finally got a few Sideshow figures including the slave Taylor and
Nova double pack and the Lawgiver all on discount. I alwaws thought
Sideshow were too expensive and traditionally in the UK most end up
on discount if your patient. (i'm not sure if anyone here knows but
I own a comic shop so it's pretty easy to buy off my self. )
The thing with the figures is I also think it's a case of
diminishing returns, how many times do you need to buy a Zaius
particularly when you have a shelf full already? So each new version
has to be a vast improvement on the last to have any chance of
shifting numbers and if it's not...

I should scan for you all to see an article on APES I wrote and actually got published. It's pretty honest about APES flaws, but I also praise it.

I confess that the first time I saw Escape I thought that Hasslein was a
brute. But when I got older I could see that the revelations presented
to him put him in a dilemma in that he really wanted only what was best
for humanity. Tough call and despite what many would consider
calousness, he did do what he thought was best. The only question left
to ponder was could he have achieved his goals in a more humane fashion?

It was for a magazine that's still around called THE PERFECT VISION. They are a video magazine that reviews high-end products and software. I sent my article to them because I was pissed at how lousy
PLANET looked on laserdisc and I wanted to explain what made the movie good and why it deserved more respect.
You'll find out one thing from my article though...

I wouldn't go as far as saying that PLANET is the "only thing we can pay attention to", but as far as what I call "original canon", hell yeah, PLANET is IT!...
By that I mean let's use the 3978 vs. 3955 bit... In PLANET it was 3978 and that is the way it should have stayed because that was the way it was in the original film...
Or, we could even go as far as Cornelius... In PLANET he is an archeologist, then suddenly in BENEATH Zaius refers to him (and Zira) as "you two psychologists"... Then, suddenly in ESCAPE, he's and
archeologist again... He was an archeologist in PLANET, and should have been referred to one that way in BENEATH...
What was laid down in PLANET is what they should have referred back to for the sequels, as that is the original canon and it is what should have stuck...<.html

The only thing I consider canon from any of the Marvel Comics is the story with the former president living inside Lincoln's giant head on Mt. Rushmore..tee hee...and that you have to
climb up the President's huuuge nose to get to the bunker inside. It's such a wonderful image, and so correct to the milieu that I always considered that part of Ape lore. It's completely
arbitrary, but I just LOVED that story when I was about fifteen, so it goes in the bag.
Other than that, the canon is the six movies, essentially. All else is basically "extra stories" simply because I've seen the six films many times over, and have seen only a few badly stiched
together "movies" of the TV episodes (which I rarely enjoy, sadly) and nothing but the two minute clip of the animated show from Behind the Planet of the Apes...I simply don't know that set of stories and
characters at all. (I'm going to enjoy meeting them when I get my DVD sets!)
All six movies, though, fly off and onto my shleves with startling regularity. I am strongly compelled to those movies, well....except Battle, really, and I still watch that one all the time, even though
it's the poor relation at the table.
It don't make me right or wrong...it's merely how I've come to these Apes of ours. Everyone's path is different, grasshopper. There's some folks who start with the TV show, and some
with the comics. I started with the movies, (Beneath, specifically) so there my loyalty lies.
I'm a firm believer in the original version/creators/ team ..Unless something else turns out to be really good, and then I let it in. Like I did with the Marvel POTA Up The President's Nose story.
That's pure Apes to me, so it's stuck in my brain with the movie stuff. Or the Star Trek Animated Series (using the original writers and voices helps) from the Seventies...that's just as "Star
Trek" as anything else to me, though some Trekkies disagree. Or the very wonderful Alan Moore Swamp Thing (which was NOTHING like Wrightson and Wein's) or the fabulous Frank Miller Daredevil and
Batman (not the original creator, but hoo boy! was he good at that stuff!).
Even the Adam West Batman. I LOVE the Adam West Batman.
As a fan myself, I like seeing what folks do with the characters I really like. If I like this new stuff, and I find myself remembering the story years later, because it stuck in my brain well, then it becomes
canon, simply because it stuck in there.
It's really about what we all saw first and what we think matches that original thing that we all love, whether it's POTA or Goat Boy... It's ALL fiction, my brethren and sistren.
Get out of it what enthralls you.
Me, I'm off to letter one of our lowly Planet of the Apes "extra" stories for Mr. Comics (co-written and completely drawn by a fresh young talent named Sam Agro!). This one involves a character I
KNOW is going to set off howls about what is, or isn't "canon".
But It's a good story. Is it "Climbing up the President's giant nose" good? Only time will tell. Ty the Guy.

Here's a few things I was surprised to find on
ebay...I did not get them as they are so rare I
couldn't stay in the bidding.......!
Slip on Ape feet.....inflatable floating vest ...and a
radio! I thought I had a pic of the POTA BATHMAT! but
I can't find it....apparently rare because they were
used and got all mildewy I guess....

If so what I (and I'm sure a few more on this group) would be
interested to know is how you tie that movie in with the rest? To many
of us here the only thing it has to do with the other 5 'classic'
movies is the title and other than that nothing else at all.

stop? A case could be stated for including ANY apes comic story, you
want 'the brains in jars' considered canon?

So do I. I'd rather watch the 60s TV BATMAN than any of the modern "dark" movies. I think Whitty prefers it too.

Just wanted to let
everyone know that the following Files have
been moved from the main site and can now be found in the files

We have to do this periodically to free up space
as Yahoo allows a limited amount of space
for Files and Photos. As this group is so active we tend to fill up very
quickly and instead of losing Files
forever we like to keep a copy of them all, so we had to start a few more groups
to store excess stuff on.
One very important point - to access these Files
you will need to be a member of
the Photos group. The same is
also true for the Archives, Fan
Fiction and Photos2
groups:
All the sites can
be easily accessed via the links on each one's Home Page.
Thanks,
Neil

their adaptions of the films...
*** Why? In all sorts of ways, the MARVEL adaptations differ from
what actually ended up on-screen. A couple examples: Cornelius' map
(as drawn by George Tuska) doesn't look anything like the map in the
movie... The Ape-onauts' ship, as drawn by Rico Rival, has a long
pointy rod sticking out the front (not to mention the round porthole
on the front cover of issue 12)... the 'look' of the Mutant
underground city in issue 8, which seems to be Alcala's visualization
of the Michael Avallone novelization, rather than based on stills of
the buried NYC landmarks...
I could go on and on. As much as I may like MARVEL's efforts, in so
far as they differ even slightly from the actual films I would have
to consider them 'noncanonical'.
For my money, the only 'canonical' POTA works are the FILMED original
ones: PLANET, BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST, BATTLE and the TV show. Not
Burton's disappointing 're-imagining' nor any of the (at times)
entertaining original comic books, including the new REVOLUTION
comic. But, just 'cuz I don't consider 'em to be canon doesn't mean I
don't enjoy them, or don't want more original comix to be produced!
By all means, bring 'em on.

hell yeah, PLANET is IT!...
>
> By that I mean let's use the 3978 vs. 3955 bit... In PLANET it was
3978 and that is the way it should have stayed because that was the
way it was in the original film...
*** As far as I'm concerned, it's "canon" that Taylor's EARTH-TIME
chronometer read "11-25-3978" on it, but that doesn't necessarily
mean that the clock was telling the correct time. Even in the film,
Taylor tells Landon that they've "been away from Earth for 2,000
years, give or take a decade" GIVE OR TAKE. They left Earth 6 months
before the SHIP-TIME date 7-14-1972 (or, approximately 1-14-1972), so
that he infers their landing date on this 'alien' planet is in a
range of years from 3962 to 3982: 3972 give or take 10 years. He
actually saw the year 3978 on the clock, and -- based on that --
tells Landon that he's "2,031 years old" (suggesting that Landon was
born in 1947).
Of course, my (in)famous "Mothership Theory" scenario has a way of
explaining how both dates (3978 and 3955) are 'true', in that
Taylor's mission (a 'mothership' with 3 attached shuttles, just like
in Boulle's novel) was 320 lightyears away from Earth in the star
system they'd been sent to in the Earth-Time year 3978 (11-25-3978),
but that when the "Emergency Homing Device" was activated all the
ANSA Earth-Time clocks (EXCEPT, for some reason, the one in Taylor's
shuttle) registered a backwards-through-time shift of about 23 years,
so that Brent's ship and the Ape-onauts' ship both had an Earth-Time
reading of "3955". When Virdon's ship -- which also had its Emergency
Homing Device activated -- zipped from Alpha Centauri back to Earth,
it registered a backwards travel through Time, from 7-14-3085
(Opening Credits sequence) to "MAR-21-3085" (the scene where Virdon &
Burke get back to their crashed ship). Both ANSA ships (Virdon's and
Taylor's) go back through Time at the same rate: about 26 and a half
Earth-Time days per lightyear. Virdon's ship, zipping 4.34 lightyears
back to Earth, goes backwards through time from July 14th to March
21st (of 3085), whereas Taylor's ship(s) go backwards through time
from November 25th (3978) to about July 1st of 3955. Taylor's clock,
though, is not 'plugged-in' to the master computer on
the "mothership" that governs all the other shuttles' clocks, so it
continues to read "11-25-3978" when all the other clocks click back
to the date "7-01-3955".
So, then, BOTH year-dates (3978 and 3955) can still be "canon",
retaining both the information given in the original "PLANET" and
also the info given in the sequel movies, without necessitating a
choice to ditch any detail.
>
> Or, we could even go as far as Cornelius... In PLANET he is an
archeologist, then suddenly in BENEATH Zaius refers to him (and Zira)
as "you two psychologists"... Then, suddenly in ESCAPE, he's and
archeologist again... He was an archeologist in PLANET, and should
have been referred to one that way in BENEATH...
*** Or, we could infer that Zaius -- implying that Cornelius, too, is
a "psychologist" now and NOT a practicing Archaeologist -- is
reminding them both that Cornelius lost his job as an archaologist
when he abused the privileges by committing scientific heresy. Zaius
had the Cave destroyed, along with all its artifacts. As far as he's
concerned, Cornelius is no longer an archaeologist; in my scenario,
Cornelius MAJORED in Archaology, and MINORED in Psychology
(probably 'cuz Zira was majoring in Animal Psychology, and he wanted
to attend some of the same classes, just so they could do (ahem)
some "homework" together, if you know what I mean...). So, when he
was denied any opportunity to continue on in a career in archaology,
he fell back on his minor, Psychology, and was hired on in Zira's
department. After Doomsday, when Cornelius and Zira find themselves
in their distant Past, there's nobody in Apedom (like Zaius) to strip
him of his professional credentials, so he refers to himself as an
Archaeologist, rather than the Psychologist he'd resorted to.
Hey, an ape's gotta earn a livin'!

to for the sequels, as that is the original canon and it is what
should have stuck...

*** For me, I agree. Boulle's novel is the source upon which the
first film is LOOSELY based, but it ain't "canon". There ain't a
Zira/Zaius/Cornelius on Earth in the 40th Century AND a
Zira/Zaius/Cornelius on Soror, orbiting Betelgeuse, in the 29th
Century (i.e. ~ 300 years of "Earth-Time" after Prof. Antelle's ship
leaves France in 2500).
What's canon is the MOVIE version of "PLANET", its 4 movie sequels,
and the 14 live-action TV episodes. "Classic POTA" only.
No Burton!

*** Hey, Ty, I hope you dudes don't get sued by the makers of that
Matthew Broderick movie... you know, the one with the chimps being
tested in a simulator and getting zapped with radiation, just to see
how long they can fly an airplane to its target during a nuclear war.
I think it was called "PROJECT X". When the chimps take over that
military testing facility, it sorta reminded me of "CONQUEST".
It was a good movie (I thought so, anyway), and I'm wondering if you
guys were aware of it when you thought up this Revolution storyline.
There IS a resemblance, don't ya think?

It was telling "the correct time" because PLANET was made first, is a film independent of its sequels, and no one involved in its making had any thought of a sequel or sequels!

I'm sorry for my explosion of anger in another post, but this kind of thing makes me so mad I could strangle someone (think Nova and Hector).
