Just wanted to
remind everyone that we now have a group set up for the uploading of those rare
photographs and other stuff that we were discussing for the Rare Photos CD
project.
It is called
Pota DG Projects and it can be found here:
There have already
been some great rare photographs uploaded and anyone who wishes to upload or
view the pictures just needs to let us know on the DG and we will send
you an invite or alternately you can go to the group and join
yourself.
Cheers,
Neil

Thanks Neil.
Let’s get this going and then we can
start the painstaking role of categorising the photos.
I think we should break them up into the
various movies/TV Show and Toons (eg Neil’s widescreens!) and then more
categories (behind the scenes/deleted scenes etc).

.htmlExcellent question, Neil, about the story of Taylor's other
daughter. (I say "other" since Adventure Comics featured a daughter
with a different name who also resented her father for abandoning
her. I guess he really was quite a bastard.) As for me, I thought
the ending was great -- not because the chimp should have died, which
I agree with you was not the case. Rather, I saw it as the ultimate
expression of the dysfunctional mentality her father's abandonment
caused. Her mom told her that her father was a real bastard, and so
she grew up hating him, but at the same time (like so many damaged
souls) ended up emulating the person she hated. Hence, she had to
prove she was a bastard, too, so that she could convince herself she
wasn't inferior to her father. Abandoned children often grow up
blaming themselves for the abandonment, even if it's entirely
subconscious. Although she blamed him for leaving, deep down, she
wondered if her being more like him might have kept him from
leaving. Hence, when push came to shove, she became the bastard she
always believed him to be -- and, like her father, she ultimately
decided to let her own misery spill onto others. Taylor could have
let the world survive, but no -- he had to destroy it. So, too, did
his daughter have to destroy the chimp mother.
Or something like that. :)

I'm just wondering if the action doesn't speak for itself in comic
strip
form? It seems to me that some of the panels don't really need
any
additional explanation. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like
the
picture it self-explanatory. And the narration is superfluous.
What are your thoughts? I'm certainly no comic expert.

T,
This is a good point.
When we did “Beware the Beast”,
this was a major issue.
The people I have shown the comic to often
comment also that many of the words are unnecessary (and we are going to have
another look at that soon).
But my personal opinion re “Before”
is that the words are just right.

I have to agree with them. Because it was originally in screenplay
form,
everything was spelled out, since a script is not a visual medium
-- but comics,
like film, are. So having words with the pictures just seems
redundant. If you
want to show a guy getting hit with a rock, you just show a guy getting hit
with
a rock. Having the words describing the action in every frame is
distracting, and immediately jumped
out at me as being unnecessary. If anything what it need it was to
have
a bigger Splat! Maybe it's just me, but I think the narrative should
be
used sparingly, and not at all in frames where the pictures can
tell the story. Like the old saying says, 1 pic + 1000 words.
One
thing that was stressed in class. was never write a whole bunch of
dialogue for a scene when it can all be said with a glance. The
audience will fill it all in. Clint Eastwood is a master at
this.
The Old Westerns can teach us all a thing or two about storytelling.
Rio Bravo & Once Upon A Time In The West don't have a single
spoken word in the first ten minutes. That is pure genius!
And,
like the desert scene in POTA, it sets the tone for the whole film

don't have music to go with them.

another aspect to it.
Taylor's daughter is utterly bitter about the fact that her dad
essentially abandonned her when he left. In the story the baby ape
dies. By later killing the ape mother, the mother and child are
reunited in a manner. Could this have been an underlying subtext to
the story. Was she Taylor's daughter using some sort of skewed logic
in which she believes that she is reuniting the two?

The only TV show I've been watching is "Alias", which ended last

Giacchino, says in the notes: "When I was young, I was a BIG fan of such
episodic televion series as "The Six Million Dollar Man", "The Muppet Show",
"Twilight Zone", "Jonny Quest", "Planet of the Apes", "Star Blazers", "Combat",

It's not often we hear the POTA TV show mentioned in a good light in
mainstream products so that kind of stood out to me. Giacchino is the musical
soul mate of J.J. Abrams, the creative mastermind of "Alias" AND "Lost". Tom
Cruise was a big "Alias" fan (said recently in "Time" that he watched the DVDs
for 2 days straight - - - he's human!) and hired Abrams to make "Mission:
Impossible 3" as his movie directing debut. And of course Giacchino came with
him to do the music (the original M:I TV score was by Lalo Schifrin, who did the
POTA TV show theme). And rumor has it Abrams (and probably Giacchino) will
jumpstart the "Star Trek" movie franchise for Paramount, too. So POTA fans still

exception -- as far as I could tell -- of William Smith (who played
Tolar in "THE GLADIATORS") in the autograph area. Man, he looked like
he's been through the mill... probably from having done all his own
stunts, I'd guess. I would've paid for an autograph of his if he
would've had some stills from that POTA episode, but for some reason
he didn't have any POTA-related photo to sign. Too bad. I think he
would've done better if he had. I was on a budget, and hey, I'm
sorry, but I was there to get some POTA memorabilia, not to get some
generic head-shot signed.
After the ComicCon, I'm gonna be in Los Angeles for a couple days, to
check out some more POTA sites -- Malibu State Park, etc. Does
anybody know where EXACTLY the shipyards from the end of ESCAPE FROM
THE POTA happen to be? I wouldn't mind checking 'em out. Last year I
went to Point Dume and Century City; does anybody have any
suggestions for other POTA-related sites to check out?

Back in the '70's, Bill Blake and Paula
Crist toured as Cornelius and Zira (and got lots of coverage in the Marvel POTA
magazine). Bill used to autograph pictures as "Cornelius" and give them to kids.
If anyone has one of those pictures from back then, Bill needs your help. He
doesn't actually have those pictures anymore and he needs one to scan for a
project. Specifically, there was one he had that showed both him in the flesh
and as Cornelius. It's the same pictures that are on the first page of the
"People Who Are the POTA" article. If anyone has this picture, please contact me
pronto. I'll make sure the picture is returned. Gracias!

Also, we now have a group set up for the
uploading of rare photographs and other
stuff that we have
been discussing for the Rare Photos CD project.
It is called
Pota DG Projects and it can be found here:
There have already
been some great rare photographs uploaded and anyone who wishes to
upload pictures just needs to let us know on the DG and we will
send you an invite or alternately you can go to the group and join
yourself.
Don't forget we
also have 4 other
groups 'attached' to the main
one.
First up there is
the DG Archives
group:
This group was created to store old posts from the group
which have been deleted from the main site. We have to do this periodically to free up space
as Yahoo does not allot much space to the groups anymore.
As this group is
so active we tend to fill up very quickly and instead of losing old posts
forever we like to keep a copy of them all. They can be found in the Files
section listed by month and year.
There is
also the DG Fan
Fiction group where members can place, in th
e group's Files section,
their Fan Fiction stories, poems etc. to be enjoyed
by all:
Then there's the
DG Photos
group:
Where photos
and files
are occasionally moved to save space on the main DG
group
Finally
there's the DG

group
A second photos group where photos and files
are occasionally moved to save space on the main DG
group
All the sites
can be easily accessed via the links on each
one's Homepage.
Don't
forget to check out the DG 's vast Photos

Fox's "X-Men 3" had a $44 million Friday, the
second biggest opening day in U.S. cinema history Fox also has # 1 by default,
last year's "Star Wars Episode 3". Here's how the to 5 opening days stack up,
according to www.boxofficemojo.com
:
1. "Star Wars - Revenge of the
Sith" $50 million
2. "X-Men: The Last
Stand" $44
mil
3. "Spiderman
2" $40.4
mil
4. "Harry Potter & the Goblet of
Fire" $40.1 mil
5.
"Spiderman"
$39 mil
# 18 on the list is POTA2001, which got $25
million it's first day (it's Fox's biggest opening day that isn't "Star Wars" or
"X-Men"; even "Fantastic Four", which is currently getting the sequel treatment,
is farther down at # 27 with $21.2 mil).
"X-Men 2" made $31 million it's first day 3
years ago. In my opinion it's the best of the 3. "X-Men 3" is pretty good as
entertainment and spectacle, but seems kind of rushed (which it was, natch, by
Fox) and lacks the artistry of the previous one (thanks to it's new director,
party boy Brett Ratner). It remains to see how it does in the long run and
whether it will best "X-Men" defector Bryan Singer's "Superman
Returns". - - - Jeff <.html <.html

Like you say it was fantastic that you guys were nominated at all
considering how recently the comic had been out and like you say how
small a publishing venture it is. I really do wish you had won
something, it would have been fantastic for Apes as well as personally
for you and that is why I was hopeful for next years awards. You guys

.html Well it was just about this time last year that I attended a local
Comic show when I met Tom Fowler and he broke the news that the new MR
comics was going to do an ape series.
Well I attended this years convention yesterday and this time I had a
chance to bring along those very ROTPOTA issues for him to sign. While
I do not have any earth shattering news to report this year, I did
have a nice long chat with Tom in which we discussed the success of
the series. As can be expected he was very happy with the series so
far and with what they've been able to do.
He says that #5 is a blockbuster, but I did not press him for details
as I prefer to be kept in suspense until I can enjoy the issue in my
very hands.
We got around to how the backstory in #4 packed a wallop of a punch
and I mentioned how much I liked it, controversial as it may be. He
let me in on a backup story he proposed that would have been head or
heels more volatile that the #4 story. Once again, I just thought is
was great and fit in perfectly with the underlying message of the POTA
saga. But I could see how the title alone would have shocked some
people. I don't want to get into the details because I hope that
perhaps somewhere down the line this story can make it to a comic, and
it is Tom's story. Perhaps we'll see it in MR ROTPOTA series 2?
(No, I don't want to give the impression that he even mentioned a
prolongation. That is merely wishfull thinking on my part. Maybe I can
get to report that news next year.)

Thanks, Tim! But that's not the one. The one
he wants is on pg. 34 of Marvel magazine # 12. It was a both Bill as a human and
as an ape. i guess it was his "signature" shot. Jeff

Subject: [PotaDG] Fowler at Comic
show (part 2)
Well it was just about this time last year that I attended a local

I got both of the photos and I had the photo of Zira done as a painting
when I was stationed at Osan, Korea back in 1985, the only problem was that he
painted Zira's tunic blue.

.htmlTrue. Maybe those who held power smoked cigars, whereas the scholars -
professors in the essence of their sophistication of knowledge, smoked
pipes. Cornelius being a scientist-scholar would naturally be smoking one.
When Cornelius smoked the cigar, choking on it, two things were possibly at
play. One, it use to be traditional for the father to celebrate the birth of
his child by passing out cigars and smoking with his aquaintances and
buddies. Obviously, the apes held onto or was familiar with that tradition,
or that it was the filmaker's desire to put it in. Second, Cornelius was
perhaps being polite. To avoid offending the natives, he, in grace, accepted
Armando's offering.

grace, accepted Armando's offering.
Or it could just be yet another inconsistence in the writing.

Even
