The official ship list for comics due in shops this week has been posted on Diamond Comic Distributors website. Revolution on the Planet of the Apes issue 5 is listed, so it will be in shops this week (except,
I'm sure, for my local shop, which hasn't gotten an issue the same week as the rest of the country yet for some reason).
Because of the July 4th holiday, new comics will probably be out on Thursday rather than Wednesday here in the U.S. You should check with your local shop to be sure. Greg

*** In Saudi Arabia they still wear the same sorts of robes and such
as were worn thousands of years ago. Oh, maybe they wear better
shoes, with rubber soles on 'em... and they perhaps carry cellphones
and wear eyeglasses and wrist-watches... but given the ultra-
conservative nature of the strict Islamic culture that predominates
there, it isn't surprising that they don't go in for the 'corrupt'
Western fashions.
The Ape civilization presented in the TV series and in the first 2
movies is that of strict conservatism, so I don't find it hard to
believe that the "dress code" is still in force in Central City and
in Ape City. For all we know, there might be passages in the Sacred
Scrolls that command the Apes to wear their respective clothing
styles (i.e. green-&-brown for Chimps, orange-&-brown for
Orangutans, purple-&-black for Gorillas), with certain exalted
positions allowed to wear divergent garb (such as the ape Minister).
Zira complains to Cornelius about Zaius' motives: "He wants to keep
things exactly the way they are. I say it's time for a change!" The
word "things" could very well refer to EVERYthing, including the
ordained modes of dress that Ape citizens are compelled to wear.
Later (i.e. in 1973), when Zira HAS an opportunity to wear other
clothing (the human-style clothing tailored to her body by some
human tailor, no doubt), complete with a cape-like cloak, she seems
to REVEL in it!
Ah, gals and their need to expand the horizons of fashion...!

.html Wow! Nice work, Graham. Cornelius looks a lil' bit sleepy, but he'd
had a rough day before that (what with the Tribunal and all), so it's
understandable!
The only thing I'd change is the abbreviation for "Commander" -- it
should be CMDR, not COMDR -- but that's just me bein' a pain-in-the-
ass nitpicker. Nice work all around! Any chance of seeing more
characters, such as Zaius, some of the Mutants, Julius smokin' a
stogie...?

.htmlPatrick, the captions were my responsibility. In this case, I knew
the abbreviation was wrong, but I wanted to match the one used on
card #2 of the original TV set.
This site, by the way, has the correct abbreviation as CDR:

> Because of the July 4th holiday
*** Speaking of which, the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI is
carved on the tablet clutched in the left hand of the
Statue of Liberty, seen by Taylor (and Nova) at the
end of PLANET OF THE APES.
Today, 4 July 2006, is the 84,006th Day of the
Republic, the 1st day of the 230th Year of the
Republic. America's birthday.
If, some 84,000 days ago, when the Founders were
fighting to create a new country by severing their
colonial ties to the Kingdom of Great Britain, they
could've foreseen what America's political leaders
would be perpetrating on the American People 230 years
hence, maybe they'd have made Washington a King,
rather than a President.
Washington, in his farewell address, mentioned
something about "foreign entanglements" as I recall
reading. As our nation celebrates another birthday, I
sigh with regret that there are those whose lives have
been wasted in the Iraq war effort -- who joined up
with the armed forces in order to fight the enemy who
used hijacked airplanes full of civilians to strike at
us, and instead are being mis-used to occupy a country
that never posed a nuclear threat to America
(Condoleeza Rice's "mushroom cloud" comments
notwithstanding) and which was effectively contained
and undergoing an inspection process. Every life is
commenced with a birth and rounded with a death, and
(sadly) those wasted lives will never know another
birthday of their own. Each day the Death Count grows,
and there's no end in sight... no timetable for an
American withdrawal from the quagmire that is Iraq.
So... Happy Birthday, America. May you someday recover
from the ignominy that the Bushies have reduced its
reputation to, in the eyes of the world -- not only of
our ideological enemies (from whom we expect such
vitriol) but also from our friends and allies, whose
respect we used to have and used to care about having.
Yeah, I know, it ain't Memorial Day, but I find it
rather hard to celebrate this Independence Day given
the current situation. But what can you expect when a
so-called "compassionate conservative" is using every
ounce of his ill-gotten political power to subvert the
whole notion of a LIMITED government serving the
interests of the People (rather than the Corporations
and the filthy-rich who profit from owning them
without doing the nitty-gritty work in them, a job
reserved for the poorly-paid 'grunts' in the labor
force). I thought that "conservatives" wanted LESS
government involvement in the peoples' affairs, rather
than MORE.
The jerks in power today used "9/11" to justify going
to war without a formal Declaration of War (which
makes it all unconstitutional), just as was done in
Vietnam (a so-called "police action"). As a result,
Iraq has become a galvanizing force for every
America-hating fence-sitter who would rather join the
Jihad than just mind their own business. America has
created more enemies than it could ever hope to kill
by going about this Iraq business -- especially in the
inept WAY the Bush II administration has gone about
it, ignoring the advice of experienced military
generals and heeding the inexperienced advice from
chickenhawks like Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, et al.
It's the decisions made by such decision-makers ["I'm
the Decider!" said Dubya recently] that led Taylor to
pound his right fist into the sand in front of Lady
Liberty.
Happy Birthday, America.

achieved the rank of Commander, and her ID tag always
had CMDR on it. Maybe that rank has different
abbreviations in different branches of the service...?
Or they've changed it since she retired? Hmmm... I
dunno. I'll take your word for it, though. I forgot
that the TV series card had that incorrect
abbreviation, by the way, and given that, it makes
sense that you would follow suit.
Ignore my nitpick, then, and again let me congratulate
all concerned for this new addition of online POTA
collectible goodies! The only thing I wasn't able to
snag was the download of the entire back-picture --
for some reason, the file came up blank. I've tried
right-clicking "Show Picture" but it stubbornly
refuses to comply.
Human error, or a HAL-like glitch?

had gotten so bad as far as warming goes that the bomb
just capped it all off and got rid of a lot of the

left Liberty stuck in the mud.....
With the way things are going, it's not of

perhaps the earth was destroyed environmentally as

Just having seen the complete devastation that still

Please everyone keep New Orleans in your

I think the title to this week's installment says it all: "Up the Nose-Tube to Monkey-Trash." If that title doesn't motivate you to download issue 90 of the Marvel UK series from Hunter's site,
then I don't know what will. No letter page this week, but there is a bonus pin-up. Thanks, Greg <.html

The "lost" episodes were "The Good
Seeds", "The Deception", "The Liberator" and "The Cure". I got bootleg episodes
of these before they were finally shown on the Sci-Fi Channel and then DVD. Why
didn't they turn them into TV movies? They only wanted 5 movies so it could run
in 5 weekday slots (POTA Week). - - - Jeff

all through the 70's in England we were all ready for the 3 minute
warning or whatever it was. Our main fear growing up then was nuclear
war which crazily isn't seen as such a threat these days even though
we are just as close to being ready to wipe each other out as we were
back then and its probably even more dangerous now with all the
threats of terrorism and not knowing who really has control of all
those Russian nukes!

shops this week
The official ship list for comics due in shops this week has been posted
on Diamond Comic Distributors website. Revolution on the Planet of the Apes
issue 5 is listed, so it will be in shops this week (except, I'm sure, for my
local shop, which hasn't gotten an issue the same week as the rest of the
country yet for some reason).
Because of the July 4th holiday, new comics will probably be out on
Thursday rather than Wednesday here in the U.S. You should check with your
local shop to be sure.

I wish, I wish there was a way to convince comic shop owners around the globe to order lots, but it's less up to us than up to you guys. You have to pester the shop owners and ask
them to carry it. That's the system nowadays...it's bizarre, I know, but that's the system.
I will say one thing, though...the local comic shop near my house, Altered States Comics ( www.alteredstatescomics.com
) we give fifty copies to. They normally would only order about twenty POTA comics, I'm told, because that's what they sold of the first issue...but since we now give them fifty, they sell thirty
five.
What does that mean? Do people buy a comic because they see a large pile of them and figure it must be good? Or is it that buying twenty copies, and selling twenty copies means you'll never discover
you have a twenty first customer who would also be interested but never sees a copy.
Grand sigh. But anyone who NEEDS one can order them online from alteredstatescomics.com
and they'll be happy to ship you one. They've filled a number of orders already (one to Cuba, I'm told!).

I wish, I wish there was a way to convince comic shop owners
around the globe to order lots, but it's less up to us than up to you
guys. You have to pester the shop owners and ask them to carry it.
That's the system nowadays...it's bizarre, I know, but that's the
system.
I will say one thing, though...the local comic shop near my house,
Altered States Comics ( www.alteredstatescomics.com ) we give fifty
copies to. They normally would only order about twenty POTA comics,
I'm told, because that's what they sold of the first issue...but since
we now give them fifty, they sell thirty five.
What does that mean? Do people buy a comic because they see a large
pile of them and figure it must be good? Or is it that buying twenty
copies, and selling twenty copies means you'll never discover you have
a twenty first customer who would also be interested but never sees a
copy.
Grand sigh.
But anyone who NEEDS one can order them online from
alteredstatescomics.com and they'll be happy to ship you one. They've
filled a number of orders already (one to Cuba, I'm told!).

Just
to quantify my claim – the reason I don’t like Kent
’s art is simple.....you can’t tell the difference
between the apes! Gorillas and
chimps and orangs all look the same!
This combined with the costumes looking
completely wrong makes it very difficult to enjoy.
The colour in the REVOLUTION comics helps
a bit, but it really is a struggle.

Well I must say I was impressed too, but
there is one minor detail that I was disappointed with.
The “Lawgiver” story was splendid
and showed a lot of thought.
However it was drawn by Kent Burles and I have to say I really don’t think this
guy should draw apes.
Years ago we had this discussion and it was
unanimous that the ADVENTURE Planet of the Apes series was a nail in the coffin
of POTA because the stories were rubbish on the whole and the art was abysmal.
There are a couple of exceptions – the BLOOD OF THE APES story and
Gary Challoner’s story. But the art of
Kent Burles was/is awful.
Now a few people have flip-flopped on this
because they interviewed Kent Burles so now they
think he must be a great
artist. But I’ll remind these people that there is a record of them
absolutely slamming Kent Burles and even going so far
as to blame him for the contrast between the record breaking #1 (that proves in
1990 people wanted POTA comics!) and the rapid decline of the series.
Ty has asked for honesty in this forum and
I have been extremely honest about every aspect of the comic series.
I would appreciate it if others could
please chime in here and say what you thought about the Adventure series and
particularly Kent ’s drawing. Maybe even raise
your voice about who the best POTA Artist is......my
vote is for Neil.
Ty, I realise your intent was to involve a
previous POTA artist and I appreciate the intention, but the fans don’t
want to see Kent Burles....they want to see Neil
Foster. Don’t just believe me – listen to the flood of
forthcoming emails.

.html Isn't it rather amazing that after the whole Nova-pregnant-by-Taylor
bit was edited out of the theatrical release of PLANET (due to the
subject being deemed a form of 'bestiality'), that it was even
considered in the planning stages for BENEATH to have this hybrid
ape/human mutant? They went so far as to do this makeup test, all for
naught, since they nixed the idea anyway.
Maybe they thought that, for the sequel to PLANET, they had to come
up with ideas that were even more shocking than those the audience
had already been exposed to. Maybe, once they got the masked-over
scarred human mutants in the mix, they felt that THAT was enough of a
shock for the sequel's audience, and that the ape/human hybrid
concept would be just too much -- overkill in the shock-department.
Patrick
P.S. For what it's worth, even though it would've required a drastic
revision of the basic plot of BENEATH, the inclusion of an ape-human
hybrid would've made for a very VERY surprising, shocking and
unsettling scene. Maybe involving a breakaway sect of the mutants who
want to find some way to coexist with their simian neighbors, rather
than seeing them as the "filthy animals" and "disgusting creatures"
the Mendez group considers them. What more lasting way to express the
idea of co-existing than by interbreeding with them in some way?

We even had an entire scene set up inside Lincoln's head in an earlier version of the plot, but had to drop it for space. I couldn't let the miniseries go without at least making a reference, so I asked
Joe to include the line. He happily agreed, and added it to an already terrific scene watching the Statue of Liberty sinking into the harbour.

My take is this. I like Kent's work. I think he has a charming style that has it's own groove. There are folks who like Ploog and folks who hate Ploog etc, and I guess folks who like Kent
and don't like Kent. No artist is going to please everyone.
The real deciding factor is that I've known Kent for a zillion years, and we used to live within a block of each other in Toronto... back when we were both young, and the Earth still cooling, I even INKED a panel
or two in one of Kent's Planet of the Apes comics, ( I can't remember which issue, but it was a great thrill for the first time, to work on something to do with the Planet of the Apes) and it seemed odd that I
would work on a Planet of the Apes comic and NOT invite Kent to participate. I'm fairly certain there were some folks out there who were nostalgically pleased. I've received at least ONE email saying
they liked it.
You'll find no one disagreeing on the talents of Neil Foster, and Gary Chaloner by the way. Both terrific... Ah well.
How did you guys find the rest of the issue, or the story in the backup? Personally, I think Salgood Sam and Art Lyon outdid themselves on the lead story.

I assume you're talking about the supremely talented John Bolton. I
met him once at a comic convention, where he was doing signings and
sketches - sadly it was many years ago and at the time I had no idea
he'd worked on Apes... a missed opportunity!

I think that's a valid point, and it wasn't helped by being in black
and white. My view, and I think this is what I wrote in Scrolls when
I covered the Adventure comics, is that while Burles wasn't the best
artist at drawing apes, I loved his landscapes - the views of Ape
City and the forbidden zone that he drew really struck a chord with
me. When Wyman took over from him, I think the apes improved but the
backgrounds weren't as good.
As for who the best Apes artists are - I will always pick Ploog, but
we've been a lucky bunch when you see some of the other artists. I
agree with everyone's praise of Neil, as his work has been terrific -
also, I would point to the work of John Bolton, Alfredo Alcala and
Tom Sutton. The interesting thing, for me, about the last two is
that their art outside of Apes, particularly Sutton, was of very
variable quality but the stuff they did for Apes was tremendous.
Sutton's "Future History Chronicles" was the best art I ever saw
from him, and Alcala's "Beneath" art was similarly one of the best
examples of his work. Both artists benefited from the black and
white format of Marvel's mag, in my opinion.

Hey – I think the 3 guns are right
up there in the top 10 as well.
