Subject: Marvel UK 88 - Dracula Lives!

That's right, Dracula lives and now he's got second billing on the cover with our favorite apes. We won't be including Drac's stories in the weekly postings, but this week you do get to see him prominently on the cover as well as the inside front page.

The rest of this week's issue features the continuation of last week's Terror storyline. You got to see the outside of the Wonder Wagon last week, now get a look at the inside. This issue also has a letter column.

Thanks,
Greg

-- Its Ape-Conan's hand. It is from an in-house advert in one of the Marvel/Curtis magazines, I'm pretty sure it is issue #3. Can't remember why but for some reason Alfredo Alcala has done, what looks like, some of the characters from their other magazines that were around at the time of the Apes mag, all as apes

I scanned it ages ago and removed the text from it so I could enjoy the great artwork on it's own and looking at it again I realised that wasn't Dracula I sent, that was a different vampire, here's the Ape Dracula:

There's some serious clowns on eBay - don't take it as an indicator of the market.

However I think the seller and the high bidder in this instance are members of this group....?

There's a new card set on Hunter's site featuring new paintings from Graham Hill. Graham approached me a few months ago and told me he wanted to do a series of paintings of characters from the movies as well as the TV series and asked me to fit them into Topps-style trading card frames so they could be displayed and printed as a series of cards. Every few weeks he finished a painting and I got a new file. The last one was finished just over a week ago, so now the set is complete and everyone can see these fantastic paintings.

All nine card images are available for viewing. The card fronts can be downloaded in hi-res either individually or as a 9-card grid with a separate puzzle back file also available for printing your own set of cards.

        Awesome Graham!

Is the back 'puzzle' painting an entirely different one than the
front 'Aldo' card, or is this the same painting but at a later stage?

I've been looking them over and over to decide which is my favorite
and its a tough call. Right now it's the Aldo (front).

        Thanks for sharing these.

Aldo is actually my favorite of the paintings, as well. Zira is a
        close second.

The puzzle back is an earlier stage of the final Aldo painting, what
        Graham calls the 'underpainting'.

Thanks Dario, much appreciated, looks like Greg beat me to it with
the answer to your question :) The puzzle back as he said is the
first stage of the painting of Aldo. Thought that it would make a
nice contrast between what it looks like to start with and the final
        result.
        Best Graham.

Aldo is a character that needs more representation. In the movies, he
is easily the meanest of the Gorillas and is the one Gorilla that
emphasizes the difference among the ape species. He is up front about
his defiance and goes far beyond what other Gorillas have done. In
Beneath, Ursus is coniving, but even he had Zauis to back him up to an
extent. Aldo's closest competitor in this sense is Brutus from the
Terror comics. Both push the other Gorillas beyond what they would
        have done on their own.

Does anyone know of any Aldo fanfic?

Aldo is not a very sympathetic character, I would envision an "Aldo story" with the gorilla as the villain who goes around torturing and maiming any human he comes across or any apes that get in his way.

But, as I have said before, if it was not for Aldo shooting up the school bus and killing Kolp before he could signal Alma to detonate the Alpha Omega Bomb, the earth would have blown up 2000 years prematurely.

Hell no... I would never even compare Zira to the Burton fiasco...

I am saying this: Look at Zira in PLANET and compare the way she looks in there compared to her two sequel appearances... She does look quite a bit different when you study her... (Well, Roddy looks quite a bit different too in ESCAPE, too much hair, etc.)

I am not gonna set here and say with certainty that if I looked at stills I'd know for sure which film each still is from, but she looks different enough in each that I'd say I'd be able to do a pretty good job of it...

I remember discussing the neck-piece (along with the gorilla neck pieces...) but I never heard about it being make-up and not a fur appliance.. When and where was this revealed?

        It shows her double chin.
Also her hairline in Escape is receding.
which is strange, because it's not in the

C'mon now... You know that the hair groth on the astronauts was supposed to be there to show that time has elapsed, etc...

With Cornelius, it was all just to cut back on the time and money needed to make Roddy look good...

BTW, if the "longer hair" was supposed to show that time elapsed for the chimps in ESCAPE, then explain the long hair wigs on Roddy when he was Caesar and/or Galen... (Not to mention EVERY ape in BATTLE and the TV series..._

I'd agree with you on that one... He probably wanted less time in the make-up chair... One thing that I'm very sure he did ask for (and received) was the elimination of the hand-toupees and use of those f-ing ugly gloves in the TV series...

Things are looking pretty hot for Alex and Malaguena on this week's cover, and not in a good way...

If you though Lightsmith's Wonder Wagon was interesting, wait until you see where he calls home...

Marvel UK issue 89 is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week's issue contains a letter column.

While I agree with your comment that this tape is indeed a god example of "WTF", I can tell you why they are referred to as the "lost episodes"...

Remember the TV series "movies? These two episodes were not included in those, as two others were also left out... I remember years ago, people would sell VHS tapes of the "lost episodes" at pretty big prices...

What you mean they didn't give her eyebrows like that stupid Ari in the 2001 bastardized version?

I am not gonna set here and say with certainty that if I looked at stills I'd know for sure which film each still is from, but she looks different enough in each that I'd say I'd be able to do a pretty good job of it...

              .html.html Who are the others?

THE OTHER was a Fox film in '72 that has a Jerry Goldsmith score.

The TV show sometimes actually has better makeup than BATTLE, but both BATTLE and the TV show should have had an original costume designs, but the budgets weren't there.

I'd agree with your saying that BATTLE should have had original designs, but as far as the TV series, there we differ (at least to an extent) because I place the TV series in the "original" timeline, so they'd be wearing what the apes later down the line would be wearing...

Still, the argument could be made that since the TV series apes are in California, and apart from the east coast culture seen in PLANET/BENEATH, then perhaps they would have developed their own clothing...

I find it hard to believe that a society would wear the same costumes for nearly 2000 years, apes or no apes!

Just realised GEN. ALDO looks a bit out of place!  Suppose they just had to have a gorilla in there.  They should have used MARCUS then it would all be right......

                        Hi Tim

I’ll let you know as I sell them but pretty much everything will be going.

                        Time to move on.

What did you pay for your sleeping bag and what sort of condition is it in?

                        Michael

                        $300 is good.

This is one of the top 10 POTA pieces for sure.

Are there any holes on the inside of yours?

                        Michael

No! It's all clean and nice inside! Hardly looks like
a kid used it at all considering!

What are the rest of the top 10 pieces in your
opinion? Besides original props and/or costumes
