As far as the GOLD-KEY comic, that is a very good question... That's something I'd like to know the answer to myself...
But, as far as the MAD Magazine goes, I am gonna GUESS that because it was done as a parody there's not much he could do about it... I mean I am basing it on the same fact that politicians can be drawn as in
political commentary without retribution against the artists, I am guessing that since they were doing a satire of APES then all was fair game...

And what about the MAD magazine
parody, "The Planet That Went Ape" -- THEY used Heston's likeness and
I've never heard anything about them gettin' into trouble for it. Did
these nit-pickin' contractual details get written AFTER these works
were printed? Did Heston have to give his OK for Mad Magazine and the
Gold Key BENEATH adaptation, or did they just do them and hope
Heston's lawyers wouldn't notice?

I think that Paul Gulacy once almost got into legal trouble for making
certain characters in MASTER OF KUNG FU look like certain well- known
actors (Bruce Lee, Connery, Brando, etc). He just wanted to "cast" those
actors in the "movies" that he was drawing -- his comics back then always
had a very cinematic feel to
'em.

Neil
At last we have a script for the final TV episode we needed for the
archive on Hunter's site. Thanks to Mark Rogers we not only have the Revised
Final script for "The Deception" we also have the Outline written for the
episode.
Even though it appears our script archive is now complete, with scripts
for all five films and all 14 TV episodes as well as early versions of film
scripts, unfilmed sequels and unproduced TV episodes, we still have more
scripts to be added in the coming weeks. A first draft script of The Legacy is
ready to be scanned, and a later version of Escape From Tomorrow than the one
currently available is also waiting to be scanned.
Also available on Hunter's site today is issue 91 of the Marvel UK
series. I believe that fans of the brains in the jars will particularly enjoy
this week's installment. Letter column fans will also rejoice at the return of
their favorite feature.

I posted a while back that I managed to scan Apesfan #2, but that the
total size was some ridiculous amount (about 70 Mb if I recall). I am a
bit hesitant and never got around to asking Hunter if he was willing to
host the files. It's not so much the space that it will eat of his drive
(I assume its an enterprise grade server with lots of diskspace, but if a
lot of people start downloading it, he might end up having to pay for the
used bandwidth).
I could burn a few CDs and send them to some people.
Neil as you just lost out on ebay why don't you send me you home address
via private email and I'll send you a CD.

I don't seem to have done many POTA paintings over the years. I can only think
of two or three. One is the cover I painted for the Values audio CD and another
is a Mad type/influenced cover I painted for what was to be a Simian Scrolls
action figure special that never was. And of course there is the painted version
of that splash page from Beware the Beast that we had made up into a
poster.
Neil
Have you done any paintings
such as other POTA portrait
artists have done? I'd love to
see them posted if you have.

He certainly did and the Phantom issue was great although like
most Charltons badly printed. I think the one you remember Neil is
issue 70 from '76 which is a parody of the Maltese Falcon and
Casablanca.

It breaks down his career by company and features this work quite a
lot on the Charlton page. ( it also shows off his great cover
paintings including a comparison between an original painting and
Charltons printed version...not pretty ) The sites certainly worth a
view. A painted Newton apes cover would have been something...

-- Thanks Graham,
that sounds like the one I was thinking about. I have a nagging memory of
another story as well that used well known people but I could very well be
remembering wrong. I'll have an excuse to go through my Frew Phantoms, they
reprinted a few of the Charlton strips (in black and white and cleaned up) and
they looked fantastic, my favourite Phantom comics by far.
Great site, the
Don Newton one, I did know about it but hadn't been to it for ages and it has
been fun going through it again!
It's interesting
(and makes this a bit on-topic) that the reason the Charlton comics were poorer
quality print and in fact were issued at all is that they were from
a "family owned company out of Derby CT that published comics because it
was cheaper than letting the printing presses they owned sit dormant" is
exactly the same reason the Australian (Newton) Planet of the Apes
comics were produced, around the same time as that Newton Phantom came out
as well.
A Don Newton Apes
cover would have been something very special, I'm sure, some of those Phantom
covers were Brilliant.
Neil
He certainly did and the Phantom issue was great although like most
Charltons badly printed. I think the one you remember Neil is issue 70
from '76 which is a parody of the Maltese Falcon and
Casablanca. There's a great tribute site for Newton
WWW.donnewton. com It breaks down his career by company and features
this work quite a lot on the Charlton page. ( it also shows off his great
cover paintings including a comparison between an original painting and

Enterprise landing on planets were common.
Actually, four years' worth
of weekly Star Trek comic strips were also published around that time,
from 1969 to '73, but what you say about Gold Key was also true of the
strips, which were WILDLY inaccurate artwise and even more ridiculous from
a writing standpoint. One of the earlier stories actually ended with Kirk
teaching a bunch of apes to play soccer! And most of the stories had
Spock saying things like "Great Galaxies!" and "Leaping Novas!" and
"Great Golly!"
Also published in 1975 were a series of Star Trek
comic books from Power Records, which were just plain ridiculous. Uhura
was a white woman, Sulu was black and M'ress (from the animateds) was a
human with blue skin.
And let's not forget Marvel's first Star Trek
series, only a few years later, which featured the Star Trek crew meeting
space-faring gnomes and Count Dracula, and which featured that infamous
cover of a bloodthirsty Spock holding a weapon, with the slogan
"Spock...the Barbarian!"
So yeah...Star Trek has definitely had its
share of Adventure Comics-like crap. :)

The only explanation I can think of for the
Gold Key comic is that that was an official tie-in to the movie, published when
"Beneath" came out. So maybe they had the rights to likenesses (it's helping to
promote that movie). The POTA magazine was done after the fact, not promoting a
specific movie Heston was in. Or maybe lawyer hell just got more sophisticated
in the '70's. - - - Jeff

Thought I'd wrap this up since this was a
topic when we were debating whether the "Ape" cartoons would get a
release. www.tvshowsondvd.com
reports that the "Star Trek" cartoons from the
'70's will be on DVD Nov. 21st. A while back when these were first announced
some thought it would lead to the "Ape" cartoons getting an official release.
Instead, "Apes" beat it to the punch. Well, kinda, since they're still only
available in the "Ultimate Collection". "Trek" isn't a trick, all 22 eps are
being released in a set. Nothing else to buy. Time to do the Vulcan Hustle. - -

Great to see these Neil, I'd seen the Scrolls cover before the same
with the Beast poster. I also recall an other version of this where
the colours were much more smoothed out, I do prefer this one, always
like to see evidence of the artist hand (thats a shock, I know :) )
The Alan pic was new to me, very Da Vinci :) and purple to boot,I've

was painted after the basic idea was given to me by Dave Ballard (who
wrote Values). Dave pretty much wanted the cover to feature Alan
'inside' the time machine of the story (and to hint at a religious type
of pose) and specifically didn't want any apes on the cover. I can't
remember the exact reason why now after all this time, it may have been
for copyright reasons or something but I was told at the time that they
had another cover that did feature apes, painted by a different artist,
ready to go but it was rejected and I was asked to do the art for the
whole thing.
This cover has also been said by some people to have something in common
with the time machine from Quantum Leap but I wouldn't know about that
not being a keen observer of that show. I do remember reading somewhere
Dave Ballard hinting that the machine in Values was slightly inspired by
QL, not sure how true that would be though.

Yeah Yahoo has been pretty shocking lately and I am still having posts show up
on the group in the wrong order or hours late!
The Alan picture
was done for the guys at Scrolls for their audio CD 'Values' that came out a
couple of years ago. It was meant to have a subtle, slightly 'religious' look to
it and you're right, I agree, one can never have enough purple in a painting!

www.tvshowsondvd.com says BCI will
release the sci-fi show "Space Academy" on DVD in 2007. This starred Jonathan
(Dr. Smith) Harris and young Eric Greene as the alien Loki, "everybody's
mascot". Back then Eric was just another POTA fan like you and me. It would be
20 more years before he would become the vessel through whom the light of POTA
would shine. Looks like there will be extras, maybe the kind of quality Eric
Greene extras that POTA fans know well. Loki action figure not included. -

-- Speaking of
Chris reminds me that I have done at least one more POTA painting as well as the
3 mentioned recently.
It was the art
for boxes that he was going to use for the figures, it was originally
planned to be a full box with no see through window part and the painting was
done in a way so that it joined up when 'wrapped around' so it was one continual
picture! I do know that idea was eventually scrapped and it had been decided to
have a window on the boxes and adapt the art work to it in a different way than
originally planned. I'm not sure about the progress on the boxes
though.

Planet of the Apes
ultimate DVD
collection

Got it!
The ape head package is quite large; maybe 3/4 lifesize. Look at the picture
above, with the DVDs in front -- that gives you an idea of the scale. The head
is well made, but to me it just doesn't look like Caesar; the likeness in the
much, much smaller (6" body height) Medicom Caesar figure is a lot closer.
Still, it's impressive. I bought this in Canada from a Canadian source [Costco,
Canadian$149], and the packaging here says that 2,000 sets, with their own run
of limited serial numbers, have been produced for the Canadian market -- on top
of the 10,000 for the U.S., so this isn't quite as rare as Fox is making it out
to be.
(Given that the population ratio of Canada to the US is 10:1, it's interesting
that they chose to do a 5:1 ratio for runs of this product -- it implies that
they think PLANET OF THE APES is twice as popular on a per capita basis in
Canada as it is in the U.S.)
The set has the additional footage for BATTLE that's not been seen in a North
American DVD release before, but it's still missing the prologue that was
filmed but never shown from ESCAPE (Cornelius, Zira, and Milo in the cockpit of
Taylor's ship). I emailed my friend Eric Greene, who included a still from that
scene in the trade-paperback edition of his wonderful PLANET OF THE APES AS AMERICAN
MYTH (Eric's text commentary also appears on the POTA DVD in this set) to see
if that footage still exists; he says he's never seen any sign that it still
does, sad to say -- the still may be the only thing that's survived.
Anyway, a cool collectible, and I'm glad I bought it.

Hell, we could do a POTA encyclopedia.
The only problem is wed have to sell it to ourselves.
After Burton a large percentage of the fans left are here.
