I don't know the exact numbers, but we're somewhere shy of ten thousand. Apparently, in today's market, we're considered quite good for an indy comic. The
adventure books were coming out in the eighties, when black and white comics used to routinely sell in the seventy to eighty thousand range. (I myself did a couple of issues of Radioactive Hamsters at the time
that sold about seventy thou). I don't think there's a single indy comic doing over twenty thou these days.
I'm convinced we could be doing a little better with a little more advertising and time to build an audience, but I'm told we're doing all right. What do I know? I'm just a writer...

The ADVENTURE comics broke some huge

Ty, can you tell us how many copies of
REVOLUTION you print and how many sell?

The

Well, I’m
encouraged by that.
I know you have a good following Ty so I
would assume about 5000 buyers to be TT fans – not POTA fans.
But if there’s
about 5000 out there that’s encouraging!

My local comics guy told me flat out
it's because people didn't like the Burton flick. It killed the interest.
Although we might wonder why the Inkworks "POTA Legacy" cards didn't seem to
sell well right when anticipation was building for a new movie. It might be that
society was pretty stable in the '80's and '90's and POTA is best appreciated by
the masses when things are pretty f'd up (the '60's and early '70's). With
things deteriorating now I think the popularity would increase if we were hit by
a huge POTA cultural event (a good movie). But don't expect Fox to be

It probably has to do with the options
people have now verses the '80's. Computers, video games, 2 million cable
channels. Here's what Rupert Murdoch (owner of POTA) said last week on "The
Charlie Rose Show". Run that clip, will you Michael?
Rupe of Earl: "One of our problems is that
young people today, under 30, maybe half as many are reading newspapers as they
did 15 years ago. And there's no sign of them turning 30 and suddenly picking up

I don't know the exact numbers, but we're somewhere shy of ten
thousand. Apparently, in today's market, we're considered quite
good for an indy comic. The adventure books were coming out in the
eighties, when black and white comics used to routinely sell in the seventy to
eighty thousand range. (I myself did a couple of issues of Radioactive
Hamsters at the time that sold about seventy thou). I don't think
there's a single indy comic doing over twenty thou these days.
I'm
convinced we could be doing a little better with a little more advertising and
time to build an audience, but I'm told we're doing all right. What do I
know? I'm just a writer...

I'm guessing that the Kanji says Planet of the Apes,
since the katakana says TV Series -- Complete DVD Set
Although TV should be written terebi, it's often not. Since
the Japanese think that stuff written in English is even cooler
than we think stuff written in Japanese is. Though a few more
of them can actually read our stuff than we can read
their's. But
that doesn't always mean they all know what it means. If you
have
ever looked at the Engrish websites you know what I mean. It's pretty
funny stuff. I'd love to get a job correcting the bad English in all
their signs.

Cards are still HUGE. There's nothing old fashioned about them, unless you're talking about old fashioned cards.
Nowadays, non-sports cards are for stuff that's current (Buffy, X-Men, the New Doctor Who, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, etc.) or they're "gamer" cards, such as Magic, YuGiOh etc. My five year old
daughter will often buy a pack of cards at the store if they interest her...Dora the Explorer cards, or Barbie cards are a sure buy... My six year old son LOVES Sponge Bob cards and stickers and seeks them out
ravenously. My ten year old loves Star Wars and Magic cards, mostly because his teenage brother plays Magic with friends, and my whole family (absolutely through no influence of mine) are Star Wars fans. And
the teen collects about three or four sets of gamers cards. Star Trek cards were mentioned, but I'd like to bet, in the world of cards, Star Trek is a bit out of date (since there's no current version and
not too many people liked Enterprise). But I've seen ANDROMEDA cards, for !#)(*$#@ sake, so there's a market for everything.
Cards are still a large part of any kid culture store. Cards for old film franchises even show up from time to time, but usually put out by specialty printers, like Fantagraphics, Rip Off Press, etc. So
yeah, the original Planet of the Apes series would be more of a niche market nowadays for cards, since there's no NEW images to play with. (with comics, we at least have the ability to make NEW stories, to
lure in older fans. )
And comics, by the way, are not a thing of the past either. The industry has been growing for the last five years (after a decade of decline, agreed). Indy books are not selling like they used to, and not
because of a lack of interest in the medium, but because of an EXPLOSION of indy books. There are something like 200 monthly indy titles to compete for retail space and reader's dollars today, and thus the pie
is being split up into smaller and smaller pieces.
Even a decade ago, you could find indy books selling in the thirty to forty thousand range (think of Cerebus, Elfquest, the Teenage Mutant Turtles, Hellboy, Concrete). But lately the distribution system works
perversely for and against the indy publisher at the same time. It's a much easier system to get into today than it ever was before (hence the hundreds of titles) but it's a harder market to get noticed in
(because of the hundreds of titles). The runaway successes sell twenty thousand. So we're not a runway success, but we're surviving.
"Funny books" is right. Of course, I could always flip wings and burgers for a living, but then I wouldn't get to spend anywhere near as much time cavorting naked in the woods with nymphs.
By the way, Apes Fans (since I should probably discuss that)...the next issue of Revolution is heading for the printers, and I'm tickled about the wrap up to our first storyline. And there's a brand new
artist named Steve Molnar contributing art to the back up story (Terrific Tom Fowler draws our lead) that's just blowing me AWAY!. I predict big things for Steve Molnar, and perhaps big things from Mr. Comics
and Steve, fairly soon.

Cards are still HUGE. There's nothing old fashioned about them,
unless you're talking about old fashioned cards.
Nowadays,
non-sports cards are for stuff that's current (Buffy, X-Men, the New Doctor
Who, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, etc.) or they're "gamer" cards, such as
Magic, YuGiOh etc. My five year old daughter will often buy a pack of cards at
the store if they interest her...Dora the Explorer cards, or Barbie cards are
a sure buy... My six year old son LOVES Sponge Bob cards and stickers and
seeks them out ravenously. My ten year old loves Star Wars and Magic
cards, mostly because his teenage brother plays Magic with friends, and my
whole family (absolutely through no influence of mine) are Star Wars
fans. And the teen collects about three or four sets of gamers
cards. Star Trek cards were mentioned, but I'd like to bet, in the world
of cards, Star Trek is a bit out of date (since there's no current version and
not too many people liked Enterprise). But I've seen ANDROMEDA cards,
for !#)(*$#@ sake, so there's a market for everything.
Cards are still
a large part of any kid culture store. Cards for old film franchises
even show up from time to time, but usually put out by specialty printers,
like Fantagraphics, Rip Off Press, etc. So yeah, the original Planet of
the Apes series would be more of a niche market nowadays for cards, since
there's no NEW images to play with. (with comics, we at least have the
ability to make NEW stories, to lure in older fans. )
And
comics, by the way, are not a thing of the past either. The industry has been
growing for the last five years (after a decade of decline, agreed).
Indy books are not selling like they used to, and not because of a lack of
interest in the medium, but because of an EXPLOSION of indy books. There
are something like 200 monthly indy titles to compete for retail space and
reader's dollars today, and thus the pie is being split up into smaller and
smaller pieces.
Even a decade ago, you could find indy books
selling in the thirty to forty thousand range (think of Cerebus, Elfquest, the
Teenage Mutant Turtles, Hellboy, Concrete). But lately the distribution
system works perversely for and against the indy publisher at the same
time. It's a much easier system to get into today than it ever was
before (hence the hundreds of titles) but it's a harder market to get noticed
in (because of the hundreds of titles). The runaway successes sell
twenty thousand. So we're not a runway success, but we're surviving.
"Funny books" is right.
Of course, I could always flip wings
and burgers for a living, but then I wouldn't get to spend anywhere near as
much time cavorting naked in the woods with nymphs.
By the way, Apes
Fans (since I should probably discuss that)...the next issue of Revolution is
heading for the printers, and I'm tickled about the wrap up to our first
storyline. And there's a brand new artist named Steve Molnar
contributing art to the back up story (Terrific Tom Fowler draws our lead)
that's just blowing me AWAY!. I predict big things for Steve Molnar, and
perhaps big things from Mr. Comics and Steve, fairly soon.

Two things I'll add: the "Apes" Inkworks
cards did have new images and were well done. Plus "Apes" has not been done to
death on cards like the two Stars, Wars and Trek. I don't know how well they did
but supposedly there was going to be a second set and it never materialized so I
assume they didn't hit their mark.
And "Star Trek" is far from over. I heard at
Comic Con there was a teaser poster for the new movie reboot (2008) that went
over well. Trek and Wars are still the big kids on the block, though I don't
know how well Trek does with children. - - - Jeff

The IMBD tracks the interest in movies and actors by the hits on it's

Marvel UK issue 93 is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week the folks at Marvel UK decided to finally give the UK fans what they had been begging for all along - more Apes in their weekly PotA
comic.
How did they do this? They started reprinting the original film adaptation, but in smaller chunks than the first time around. For the sake of completeness I'm including these pages in the PDFs. There are going
to be some new splash pages as we go along, so there is some new content.
Also available now on Hunter's site is a first draft script of The Legacy episode from the TV series. At this point in the development of the episode it was titled Second Family. Thanks to Mark Rogers for his
help in acquiring this script. Those of you who are still waiting on your copies of Simian Scrolls are in for a treat with Mark's excellent article on the early synopses of the TV episodes that were sent out
to writers with the series bible. Greg

I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to make it down to the big one this
year although I haven't booked my flight and hotel yet.
On the same note, I think there may be a few that live in the area.
Perhaps they are planning on attending? (Jeff?)
Anyhow I've still got some of those POTADG flyers that were created
for the 2003 Worlcon that I distributed so I'll bring them along (not
that it seemed to help much in '03 <sigh>).
I'll be sure to report any relevant POTA content if there is any.
Oh. And for those that will be there you will be able to spot me as I
already have a different POTA T-shirt to wear for each of the 5 days
of the con. :)
If I'm really lucky I'll be able to get down to Point Dume and take a
few pics of the POTA 'Liberty' beach. Maybe even go to
Conquest's "Century City".

There was a great spoof of the Power Rangers on Night Flight
called the Dyna-Kids. They took a Power Ranger's episode,
the one with the Giant Squid, and re-dubbed it with jokes and
funny voices. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

already have a different POTA T-shirt to wear for each of the 5 days of the con. :)
If I'm really lucky I'll be able to get down to Point Dume and take a
few pics of the POTA 'Liberty' beach. Maybe even go to Conquest's "Century City".
