Then they would have also had to bring food and water for the horses. They wanted to travel light -- which is probably the best the to do when dealing with mutants.
One thing I wondered about the last time I watched BATTLE is, why didn't that "wise old ape" Mandemus hide the ammo and firing pins and such? No need to worry about gorillas getting your guns if the
things don't fire!
He wasn't so smart!<.html

Yeah I'm still having problems Neil. I read the messages off the
home page but I'm sure I've missed the thread of some posts with
messages which I don't recall being there on one visit suddenly
appearing on a subsequent one. Constant problems trying to see any of
the files.
On some visits Yahoo claims there's been no activity for the last 7
days and I know there has been because I've posted something an hour
or so before !! but it did let me vote in the poll :)
Best Graham. <.html

I think this is because
Conquest is set around 1990 and they did not expect there to be an alternative
to petrol. So to run those cars and
tanks and planes you need fuel etc.
Again, I say set the ape revolution
another 500 years on and you can have all sorts of groovy solar things
happening.

Yeah I'm still having problems Neil. I read the messages off the home

I don't recall being there on one visit suddenly appearing on a subsequent

Yahoo claims there's been no activity for the last 7 days and I know there
has been because I've posted something an hour or so before !! but it did

Well, just this morning I got an reply from Hunter regarding the

only do it with permission from the authors, which is an agreeable

one of the 2 creators of the mag. So I've just sent off a request for

So cross fingers, and we may be able to get these out to everyone...

and I'm sorry if my post came off sounding accusatory in any way. I
didn't think you were misleading us to think it would absolutely be
on sale this week. I just didn't want anyone rushing to their local
shop this week and getting disappointed because they thought
that 'out in a matter of days' meant 'on-sale this week.'
I'll check the lists on Diamond's site next Monday and as I've done
for every issue so far, post here if it's on the list and on-sale
next week.
I really hope it ships next week. Can't wait to read the conclusion
and to be able to sit down and read the entire story all the way
through, beginning to end.
Also, thanks for the peek at the art for the back-up story.

In the movie version of "LOGAN'S RUN" the Lifeclock is located in the
LEFT hand of all the City's citizens... but in the original novel, the
Lifeclock was in the RIGHT hand.
And, in William F. Nolan's more recent screenplay for a "LOGAN'S RUN"
remake, he has the Lifeclock NOT on the person's hand, but on the
FOREHEAD -- so that Runners have to wear some sort of bandana to cover
up the blinking crystal.
I think Mr. Nolan indeed was making a connection between the Mark of
the Beast and the implanted crystal in his dystopian future society.

| Subject: BATTLE - horses |
|
.html Here's my take on this question [Why didn't Caesar, Virgil, and
MacDonald take horses on their trip to the Forbidden City?].
Earlier in the film, Aldo -- defiantly glad that the school room was
wrecked, and that there would be no more classes that day --
says, "Now we go back to riding horses!"
Cornelius Jr. had said, during that class, "If my father were a
gorilla, we'd all be learning RIDING instead of WRITING."
Just as an orangutan (Mandemus) is in charge of the Armory, I get the
feeling that a gorilla (as yet unnamed) is in charge of the Corral.
Since the gorillas are the apes who predominantly make use of the
horses for patrolling their borders, it makes sense to have a gorilla
in charge of the Corral, right?
And, if Caesar doesn't want any of the gorillas to know that he's
going out-of-town on a 3-day journey -- taking along an orangutan and
a human but NOT a gorilla -- then he CAN'T go to the Corral and get 3
horses, since that would alert Aldo to the fact that they're going to
be gone... which Caesar might feel would give Aldo an opportunity to
stage a coup d'etat during his absence.
As it is, Caesar may well have told Lisa prior to his leaving to tell
any Ape or Human who needs to see him that he's busy working on some
project and cannot be disturbed... that he may or may not even be at
home. But she's to give ANYbody the impression that he is still in
Ape City, so as to prevent Aldo from taking advantage of Caesar's
absence to cause any real trouble.
As for Mike's mentioning of "a specific trek that is part of the
story formula" that I once mentioned, that has to do with the fact
that BATTLE is, in a way, "CAESAR'S INFERNO", based on "DANTE'S
INFERNO". In both stories, the protagonist goes on a journey to Hell
guided by somebody named "Virgil". In Dante's case, the Hell is
literally Hell and the 'Virgil' in question is the ghost of the Roman
poet Publius Vergilius Maro [known as Virgil in English-speaking
circles], who allegorically represents Human Reason. In BATTLE, the
Hell is figurative: MacDonald refers to the nuked remnants of Breck's
city as "the Hell my forefathers used to speak about" (I'm quoting
from memory, here); and 'Virgil' is the name specifically given to
the orangutan who is said to be one "who knows everything about
everything".
I don't know that the use (or not) of horses has anything to do with
this, except insofar as neither Dante (in his "INFERNO") nor Aeneas
(in Virgil's epic "AENEID") travelled to the Underworld by horse.
They walked. The only horse-use in Dante's "INFERNO" is when Dante
and his guide have to cross Phlegethon, the river of boiling blood in
the 7th Circle of Hell; they are given a ride on the back of a
centaur, which is a horse-bodied human-torsoed creature from pagan
myth.
Regardless, I think the best explanation for the lack of horses is
that Caesar specifically did NOT want Aldo to learn of his trip, for
reasons of security. Caesar doesn't trust Aldo, and he can't trust
any gorilla because they seem to be loyal to Aldo (and only
begrudgingly obedient to Caesar and his laws).
One other possibility, though: they know that the Forbidden City is
still radioactive. They bring along a Geiger Counter in order to
ascertain the radiation levels they encounter. Virgil warns about how
much time they have to accomplish their mission, since extended
exposure to the radiation will render them "inmates" of that place,
and by that I think he's referring to a threshold exposure to
radiation that will effectively cause them to suffer radiation
sickness beyond the bounds which their bodies can self-heal. In David
Gerrold's novelization, he mentions how Kolp (et al.) make use of
drugs which counter-act the effects of the environmental radiation of
their surroundings -- but Caesar and his friends have no such drugs.
Thus, they are going to be exposed to radiation themselves... and
perhaps Caesar thinks that the horses are too valuable a commodity to
risk exposing them to radiation. How many horses do the Apes have?
Enough of a breeding pool to warrant the 'sacrifice' of 3 horses from
the corral?
Probably not.

Then they would have also had to bring food

probably the best the to do when dealing with mutants.
One thing I

I'm sure that a gorilla could be in charge of the corral, but the reason
that Cornelius says what he says is purely out of "segregationism"... He knows
that "his kind" (and the orangutans) are the intellectual/smart ones, so it's
their "place" to learn writing, whereas the gorillas are the soldiers/protectors

Just as
an orangutan (Mandemus) is in charge of the Armory, I get the feeling that
a gorilla (as yet unnamed) is in charge of the Corral. Since the gorillas
are the apes who predominantly make use of the horses for patrolling their
borders, it makes sense to have a gorilla in charge of the Corral,
right?

It would have been quite easy. When you field strip a weapon to clean it,
taking out the bolt is one of the things you do. That way you can
clean
it more thoroughly. It would have been quite easy, had Mandemus
known
the armory was going to be raided in advance, to pull all the bolts
and
hide them in a cave or bury them before Aldo got there. I haven't
done
an M-16 since military school. But I could take the bolt out of an
AK
in about 10 seconds with my eyes closed. Since Mandemus was
the armorer he would be in charge of maintaining the weapons and
would have no problem in disabling them temporarily. Then again
they kept them in a shack. And we all saw how smart that was.

Not if Mandemus does his job. They have to be
cleaned and lubricated periodically. New weapons
often come shipped stored in Cosmoline, a petroleum
based grease to prevent corrosion during storage. But
a well maintained firearm has a long serviceable life. In
fact it's longer than a weapon that's used a lot. Putting
thousands of rounds through the barrel significantly reduces
it's accuracy. The WWII era Colt .45 Autos got a bad rap as
being an inaccurate handgun -- not that the .45 is a target
round. However by the time the army sold them off
into
the civilian market the barrels were spent. Had the people who
purchased them replaced the barrels, along with any other worn
out moving parts they would have had perfectly acceptable
accuracy. I saw a guy on TV prove this by shooting a balloon
with one at 200 yards. He then repeated this feat with a
snub-nosed .38. But even if the Apes had worn out weapons
they picked up in the battle against the military, at the range
they were fighting the Mutants at it wouldn't have made any
difference. At close quarters combat ranges it just a bullet hose.

Exactly! Caesar is prejudiced, just like his mother...
On another APES group, there was one guy who said how he wished everyone
was as kind and understanding as Zira and all the others, to which I pointed out
that Zira is a bigot... She is "racist" (speciesist"?) against the gorillas
among others... The poste writer never did reply...

Hmmmm
.....must disagree.
Labelling is something most psychologists disapprove
of. Not all gorillas are
necessarily the same. If a large
group of them display in a similar way then it’s probably more about
social conditioning and attitudes than it is about them being gorillas.

I missed the other
post. You got Paul Dehn for co-script on GOLDFINGER, right? OK
then, you win a free Bond DVD. Whitty will send it to you.

Amazons...
You always ruin everything Patrick!
Tonight when I close my eyes and fantasise it will be GROSS!
------------ --------- --------- --------- -------
Sorry, Mike, but sometimes the truth hurts!
Try to fantasize, instead, about cavortin' with Red Sonja... maybe win
a swordfight against her (without damaging her, of course), so that you
can, uh, take her up on that vow of hers. Not only did Red Sonja NOT de-
breast herself (since she wasn't an Amazonian archer), but she clad
herself in a fetching little bikini made of chain mail. Practically
invited every horny Hyborian to duel her, since her goodies were
enticing every guy around her.

Seems to me she was just speaking her mind.
True, that was anything but encouraged in ape
society, except to give them enough rope to
hang themselves. But I can't think of any
statement she made that was false. Can
you? The statements she made are the
same statements intellectuals have always
made about academic administration and
the military / police. Especially in the
politically charged 60's when the film
was made. And, on the whole her
statements were correct, if not PC.

Yes!!! Flying monkey demons!!!!! ;-)
Neil
Issue 96 is now available for download from Hunter's site. Another
more-for-your- money issue like last week's, with the latest installment
of the Terror storyline (dig those flying monkey demons), the second part of
last week's article on special effects in the films, and another chapter
in the reprinting of the adaptation of the first film. Plus a two page letter
column.
