Hopeful for what? There's already been
Goldsmith content on an "Apes" DVD. I ain't buying another damn "Apes" DVD
unless there's deleted scenes. #@&$#ing

news!
Check out this news from the Jerry Goldsmith
website about the Fox films THE SAND PEBBLES and VON RYAN'S EXPRESS:
http://www.jerrygol dsmithonline. com/news. htm
This
makes me very hopeful for contents of a future DVD release of
POTA.
Also, check out the changing pictures on that news page to see
Goldsmith wearing a gorilla mask while he's recording POTA's score!

According to www.thedigitalbits.com , DVD was
introduced to the U.S. 10 years ago tomorrow (March 24, 1997). It had already
been introduced in Japan the previous November and some machines had already
arrived. But 3/24/97 was the arrival of movies (from Warner Bros., the biggest
early booster) and test marketing and is as good as any marker. I didn't partake
until 2000 and, yes, my first DVDs were the POTA Collection.
Of course, everyone has their own ideas
about how DVD has impacted their life. For me it's just incredible the industry
that has rose creating extras. The documentaries, the interviews that are being
done specifically for the DVD market are priceless. Photos, designs, deleted
scenes, all this stuff we lament the lack of for the original "Apes" stuff is
now being archived and preserved, and we don't have to trust a studio to watch
over it.
Another cool thing is the ability to collect
complete runs of TV shows. Fox was a pioneer of this and I believe POTA was one
of the first TV shows to be complete on DVD.
In any case, maybe watch your favorite DVD
or whatever to celebrate. The mind boggles what's coming in the next 10.

Well, let me clarify my position regarding the non-feasibility of a

order to explain how it is that all the dogs and cats "on Earth" (as
Armando tells Caesar) could be dead AND how there could be at least two
dogs living in the area where the Fugitives land (Arno's dog and that
other mutt briefly seen when the trio were approaching the ruins of the
San Francisco area), I worked out a scenario that also took into account
the existence of a group of "Scientists" (from "The Legacy") who had had
some kind of forewarning about the impending Nuke War and took pains to
plan ahead.
They buried those Vaults in various cities, and
hermetically sealed a number of holographic projectors in nearby areas so
as to point the way to those Vaults.
And -- in my scenario -- a
group of these Scientists made sure that they were in an orbiting science
station, situated at the L5 position of the Earth-Moon system, when the
nukes started flyin'.
As to whether or not they had LIVING dogs and
cats up there with them in that L5 station, that doesn't really matter.
What matters is that they could just as easily have sample DNA from
various breeds of dog and cat -- a genome database, in other
words.
From such a genome database, a more advanced group of Scientists
-- their descendants living in the 25th Century or later, in other
words -- could bring back those long-dead species the same way that
Michael Crichton's scientists brought back once-extinct dinosaurs in
"JURASSIC PARK".
In my scenario, I have certain characters who leave
Earth on an interstellar mission from their "New America" -- the
pole-shifted island continent that was once named 'Australia' -- who
return to Earth in 3073... only to find that something bad has happened,
not only to their "New America" but to the rest of the world.
Thus, in MY scenario, the astronauts who had landed "more than ten
years ago" (from the perspective of Zaius and Urko in 3085) were from
another time period -- but NOT from the United States of America circa
the end of the 20th Century. Rather, they were New American astronauts who
left Earth circa 2500 and returned some 573 years of EARTH-TIME later.
I'm not gonna go into all the details of this storyline, but suffice
to say that the science which enabled those few dogs to exist in
Galen's time -- in MY scenario -- derives from that remnant of
American scientists whose ancestors left those Vaults in Oakland and
elsewhere AND who re-colonized the island continent of Australia,
renaming it after their homeland ("New America") due, in part, to the
fact that a pole-shifted Australia wouldn't necessarily be wholly in
the southern hemisphere anymore; it ends up straddling the Equator.
Since the name "Australia" means "southland" (from the Latin
"australis") , it makes sense to those colonist-scientists to give the
place a new name. Colonists have always done so, naming places like New
Amsterdam, New York, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, New England, etc
etc.
Thus, when my New American astronaut characters get back to Earth
in 3073 only to find things have gone bad, they will take with them from
New America to "old" America some surviving dogs that were on the
verge of becoming feral -- dogs that came to exist because on New
America scientists sought to bring back certain extinct species in a
JURASSIC PARK-kind of way. One dog -- back in 3073, just a puppy --
later becomes the personal pet of Prefect Veska's toddler son, Arno.
The human who gave that puppy to a certain chimp also told him that
the creature was called "Dog"... which is the name Arno calls it. Arno
didn't call his dog "Fido" or "Benji" or some such name -- or even any
'ape' name, so to speak. He calls it "Dog". For all he knows, it's the
ONLY such tame animal in existence. He doesn't know that calling it "Dog"
would be like calling a human 'pet' "Man".
Yeah, it's a long and
convoluted way to explain the aggravating presence of a dog in the TV
pilot episode (etc), but it also takes into account other info from the TV
series -- those Scientists from "THE LEGACY" for instance. For what it's
worth, I wish that the POTA series had NOT included Arno's damn dog -- it
would've been far easier for me to reconcile the TV series with the movies
that way! But, what the f***!
As to this idea of cross-overing POTA
and LOGAN'S RUN, though, well I'll admit that the dogs & cats thing
doesn't completely rule it out: if I can unflub Arno's dog for the sake of
an all-POTA scenario, then that makes it possible to introduce living cats
for the Old Man played by Peter Ustinov in LOGAN'S RUN. Sure.
But
I've also addressed another problem that I think completely rules out any
connection between the two concepts. In POTA there is a NUCLEAR WAR that
wipes out Man's civilization -- and which gives the apes their
justification to dominate Mankind in the harsh manner we see in the films
and episodes.
But in LOGAN'S RUN (the MGM film, that is), there cannot
have been a NUCLEAR war. Oh, there may have been all sorts of conventional
wars in the 21st Century leading up to the building of the City and all
that. But when Logan and Jessica get to the ruins of Washington D.C.,
they find WOODEN houses... BOOKS and PAINTINGS in the Capitol
Building... in other words: FLAMMABLE materials that had to have been
there during the POTA nuclear war. It is absolutely inconceivable to
me that Washington D.C. would've been spared as a nuke target in the
POTA scenario; and IF it had been nuked -- even by just one single ten
kiloton nuke -- then all those flammable materials would've been ignited,
flaming into ash.
I also see no evidence of a nuke blastwave in the
ruins of Washington we see in LOGAN'S RUN. Sure, those heavy masonry-built
structures might survive a nuke, but the wooden houses Logan, Jessica and
the Old Man pass by on their trip from D.C. to the domed City would've
been FLATTENED, blown apart by the blastwave of a nuke.
Another
thing: in the ruins of New York City and its environs, the nukes that had
devasted that part of America had rendered the soil poisonous. A blasted,
lifeless wasteland. Yet in LOGAN'S RUN, the ruins of Washington D.C. are
overgrown with lush vegetation, with vines having crawled their way up and
around the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, etc. And this, by the
year 2274, a mere 256 years after 2018 (when BATTLE takes place, 27 years
after CONQUEST). Yet in the 3900's the NYC region is still a lifeless
desert. Is it reasonable that Washington could recuperate from exposure to
nuke radiation so soon, yet New York City could not?
Well, I don't
think so. And I think that rules out the possibility of any crossover
between POTA and LOGAN'S
RUN.

Cornelius and Zira tell Hasslein, in 1973, that their prehistory began
with the plague that killed all the dogs and cats, prompting the humans to
take apes as pets. Even if you want to believe that Caesar "changed"
things in an Altered Timeline, he CANNOT have changed the fate of the dogs
and cats, since -- as Armando told him -- "they all died, 8 years ago"
when they they were at the Pet Memorial.

*** You mean, two parallel universes? How, then, could there even BE
a crossover unless people from one of those parallel universes did
a "Sliders" and scooted on over to the other universe parallel to
theirs?
Hmmm... well, I suppose. The 3rd "LOGAN" novel ["LOGAN'S SEARCH", by
William F. Nolan] involved aliens abducting Logan and taking him to a
parallel universe AND back in time to the same timeframe that the
original novel takes place -- a parallel universe which is ALMOST
exactly the same as the one he'd lived in. As much as I absolutely
LOVE the original "LOGAN'S RUN" novel (and really like the first
sequel to it, "LOGAN'S WORLD"), I must admit that "LOGAN'S SEARCH"
isn't anywhere near as good as those other two books. But, since
Nolan's "LOGAN" novels introduce the idea of jumping over into a
parallel universe, I don't see why a similar thing couldn't happen to
the MGM movie version of Logan -- have him (either alone or with
Jessica) somehow transport over into the POTA universe and have an
adventure there. In the MGM movie, Logan first meets Jessica when she
teleports into his apartment (the "Circuit" gizmo); maybe they could
do a thing where Logan (and Jessica?) experience a teleporter
accident that -- like Kirk & Co. in the "MIRROR, MIRROR" episode
of "STAR TREK" -- jumps 'em into a parallel universe... where
intelligent apes speak, ride horses, and live in a precarious 'peace'
with the humans.
One COULD cook up such a crossover story, I guess. And, who knows?
Maybe it'd be a good one. But I'm not all that much of a fan of doing
crossovers in the first place. I didn't dig the "APE NATION"
crossover of POTA and ALIEN NATION back when that came out -- maybe
cuz I hated the latter movie almost as much as I love the former one!
The whole notion of WATER -- the universal solvent -- being acidic to
an alien creature's biochemistry just makes me roll my eyes at what
was supposed to pass for movie science fiction back in the 1980's and
90's. What about the water vapor in the goddamned AIR, you bonehead
screenwriter??? Wouldn't THAT at the very LEAST give Mandy Patinkin's
character a friggin' rash?
Everything I hate about that inane pseudo-SF concept was
embarrassingly regurgitated in that godawful M. Night Shyamalan piece-
of-shit "SIGNS" (starring Mel "Jew-Hater" Gibson). Remember THAT
crappy film? Mel's character loses his faith when his dear wife is
killed in a car accident that GOD HIMSELF caused -- just so that
before she croaked, she could mumble some nonsensical twaddle that
also happened to be divinely inspired and of prophetic importance
when those evil aliens with the dreaded Wrist Gas show up! It seems
that God's "mysterious ways" include making Mel's son asthmatic -- so
he won't be able to breathe in that evil Wrist Gas... get it??? And,
the other kid has this goofy phobia about drinking a full glass of
water, prompting him or her (I forget the kid's gender) to leave
nearly-full glasses of water all around the place... JUST so that
Mel's brother -- a guy who wasn't quite good enough to be a pro
baseball player -- could use his baseball bat to go apeshit in the
nick of time... dousing those evil aliens with their farting wrists
with the water that somehow is toxic to them! Yes, yes... the Lord
works in mysterious ways... He causes the death of Mel's wife
(MURDER!), yada yada yada, ALL so that those evil aliens can be
defeated in this bizarre fashion and Mel's character can regain his
faith in Divine Providence.
AND ALL 'GOD' HAD TO DO TO COMBAT THOSE ALIENS WAS MAKE IT FUCKING
RAIN!!! But NOOOOOO! Shyamalan's 'god' had to concoct a Rube
Goldbergian plotline of events just to do what one fucking rainshower
could've accomplished.
The same stupid -- and scientifically IMPOSSIBLE -- notion... the
supposed toxicity of fucking WATER... I hated it when "ALIEN NATION"
proposed it, and I laughed derisively when "SIGNS" followed suit.
Ugh. And some idiot thought it'd be a good idea to crossover "ALIEN
NATION" and "PLANET OF THE APES"!
But don't get me wrong, Terry. I love POTA and I'm enough of an
enthusiast of both Nolan & Johnson's original "LOGAN'S RUN" novel AND
the MGM film loosely based on it to be devoting a lot of personal
time to writing a fanfic novelization of that film (with all sorts of
added backstory stuff to more fully flesh out the filmed story). My
two favorite things when I was growing up were "PLANET OF THE APES"
(which includes all the filmed sequels, the Marvel mag, etc etc)
and "LOGAN'S RUN" -- the book AND the movie. I dig all sorts of other
things -- Bond, Trek, the original "STAR WARS" before Lucas got
retarded, etc etc -- but my 2 faves are POTA and LOGAN. Yet, as much
as I dig 'em, I just would prefer to keep 'em separate from each
other.

It sorta reminds me of something I recently read about Frank Miller
in some movie magazine (in conjuction with the movie "300" based on
his graphic novel). He said that if anybody's thinking about becoming
a graphic novelist, they should first ask themselves if they've got
an interesting story to tell... to imagine themselves sitting around
a campfire with other people: is their story interesting enough to
keep 'em riveted? If it ain't, then don't bother trying to tell any
kind of story -- be it in a graphic novel format or any other.
By the way, "300" is -- IMHO -- a magnificent piece of cinema, and I
don't care what any of the snooty damned movie reviewers who don't
dig it have said! When I first saw "ROCKY" (back when it first came
out in the theater), it made me want to go out and exercise -- that
whole Training sequence with the theme music just MOTIVATES ya, you

all might just have to go out and bitch-slap the bunch. We should've
done that to 'em back when they took our embassy personnel hostage.
If I had been President back then, I'd have told 'em: "You assholes

unharmed -- or Tehran becomes a fucking nuclear crater! Have as many
Islamist revolutions as you want, you backwards fanatics, but when
you commit an act of war against the United States of America, don't

ANYTHING emboldened the fanatic Muslims to ramp up terrorism against
the West, it was that "please-don't-hurt-the-hostages" whimpering
stance that we were reduced to in the post-Vietnam malaise that was
Carter's presidency. His half-assed "rescue" attempt was an
embarrassment: he SHOULD have sent a cruise missile to Khomeini's
house -- a dud, with a phrase (in Arabic and English) on it
reading: "THE NEXT ONE WON'T BE A DUD". The kid's gloves treatment
they got back then has only made 'em the pains-in-the-ass they
currently are.
I've heard that some Iranians are protesting the portrayal of their
ancestors in "300"... and it makes me want to flip 'em the bird. A
mere 300 Spartans held off tens of thousands of Xerxes' hordes! It
actually happened! Brave, logic-loving warriors outdid their
religious fanatic enemies when the odds were at least 100 to 1. And
soon after, the Persian Empire was subsumed by Alexander the Great.
Thus, despite its flaws, the Western Tradition conquered the tide of
uppity religion-inspired fanaticism represented by the would-
be "godking" Xerxes and his ilk.
How'd I get onto this rant??? Oh yeah... I saw "300" last week. Great

unseen artwork and storyboards. I can understand that this idea
haven't been done before, but to have a coffee book 10.5x13.5 and with
photos like these that is attached. The photo that is attached I found
on a site called "Magnum Photo". There has to be some rare and unseen

Jon
Pertwee was the first Dr Who I saw (and more than once!).
Tom
Baker rules.
Torchwwod has not officially hit Aus yet but a friend in England sent me
DVD copies he burnt from HDTV and I am really impressed.
I am
passing this on to Neil tomorrow so don't spoil it!
But
yeah Torchwood is great and very "adult".

just goes to show what can be achieved when a corporation gives a
franchise the backing it deserves. There's more spin-offs happening
too, Sarah-Jane Smith is getting her own show and I've read there'll
be a kids animated series running concurrently with the newest
season. Of course it'll probably quieten down again eventually, and
it wasn't lost for as long as Apes has been, but you never know what
the future holds...

That's
why I have not placed "OT" in the title - we are talking about a successful
Sci-Fi series and this is a perfect example of how to properly breathe some life
into it. The stories are well written and the tale is worth telling and
fun to experience.
Here's
hoping the creators are POTA TV Show fans too and they want to revive
that!
Michael
It's the kind of revival that seemed impossible just 4 years ago and
just goes to show what can be achieved when a corporation gives a
franchise the backing it deserves. There's more spin-offs happening
too, Sarah-Jane Smith is getting her own show and I've read there'll
be a kids animated series running concurrently with the newest season.
Of course it'll probably quieten down again eventually, and it wasn't lost
for as long as Apes has been, but you never know what the future
holds...

in the new series for that air of wisdom and authority. Eccleston
didn't really do it for me, much too serious and 'modern', but David
Tennant is way better, a quirky eccentric like some of the best past
Doctors.

.htmlWhen I watch Doctor Who, I am partial to two actors, Tom Baker and
Christopher Eccleston. Tom Baker was the actor who play the Doctor at the
time when I first started watching Doctor Who. Who can forget his mop of
curly hair, his famous scarf and his very upbeat attitude. I believe that
Christopher Eccleston played the most cynical of all the Doctors. He
reminds me of a younger, handsome and with a more upbeat attitude Al Bundy
of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN (played by Ed O'Neill). I believe that there is a
bit of Eccleston's Doctor Who or Al Bundy in all of us.

isn't it, good well written stories that appeal to adults as well as children,
the use of modern special effects techniques (but not an over use just for the
heck of it) and a great overall idea. No reason why that couldn't be applied to
POTA at all. The only problem I can see is that Doctor Who has and always has
had many, many more fans than POTA so it was worth the risk of bringing the show
back after it had been cancelled years before.
And as for Doctors
I was quite fond of Patrick Troughton who was the first Doctor I saw in the
story about the Cybermen attacking London in the late sixties, gave me the
willies that did but hooked me in for life but I don't really have a
favourite. They are ALL The Doctor for me.

From FilmScoreMonthly.com:
Fox has also brought Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES (***, 2001, 119 mins., PG-13) to Blu Ray in a generally satisfying presentation that Burton aficionados should enjoy.
The movie has become something of a forgotten film over the years, despite strong box-office receipts, and in spite of being a hated picture among original series fans, this "Apes" is nevertheless still worth
seeing. One aspect that the Blu Ray version handles better than the previous DVD is that the movie's dark cinematography is obviously far better represented in the high-definition transfer. It's easier to follow
the action and appreciate the artistry of cinematographer Philippe Rousselot in the Blu Ray version, which also includes a commentary by Burton, the trailer, a 5.1 DTS HD soundtrack and bonus trailers.
Probably not a "reference quality" disc but still a substantial upgrade on the standard-definition DVD, and worth a viewing for Burton fans and aficionados of this entertaining "re-imagining."
Yikes! Three stars, "worth seeing"?!!!! What's this guy been smoking? Certainly something of a forgotten film, and to quote Dr. Zaius in the original, "and deservedly so!"

.htmlFair enough, point taken. My understanding is that Doctor Who
survived it's wilderness years by the BBC licensing out the name for
other companies to run with: one group was publishing novels of
original material on a monthly basis, while another was making...
audio dramas! But audio dramas with original stories and using the
voices of actors from the TV series. That's a tall order for POTA
perhaps, but imagine if Naughton and Harper could be persuaded to
take part in a good audio story.

Fair enough, point taken. My understanding is that Doctor Who survived
it's wilderness years by the BBC licensing out the name for other
companies to run with: one group was publishing novels of original
material on a monthly basis, while another was making... audio dramas!

What 'possible

"This is a very rare Planet of the Apes
life-size bust prototype design never before seen. This piece is life-size to a
human and is made of a durable plaster and poplar wood spikes with real metal
bolts and washers holding it all together. It has a strong wire on the reverse
and was designed to hang flat against any wall. It was specifically created to
show toy and manufacturing companies for a possible upcoming

If I had not read the history on Ebay, "
This is a very unique never before seen design portraying the Statue of Liberty at the end of the original Planet of the apes film as an ape."
and seen the ape's face which looks like it is from the makeup from the original POTA 1968, I would think that bust had been made for the ending for POTA 2001. In the ending for POTA
2001 if the face of the Abraham Lincoln statue had been changed to Thade, then the face on the Statue of Liberty could had been changed to an ape's face as well.

Klaatu collectibles but with a Statue of Liberty crown bolted to it.
Don't get me wrong. I love the piece. In fact, I now have 2 of them.
One is painted realisticly and is in my living room and the other has
a "bronze" finish and is featured with my Apes collection. They are a
pretty heavy plaster with a wire for mounting. I paid $19.99 for each
one before shipping. Someone's trying to make a buck.

Remember, you can get these for $19.99, not $199.00. Klatuu

all

I'd rather an accurate replica of the ruined
statue.

exactly the same face. I wonder if this guy actually sculpted the Klaatu one
originally and is now using it for this or if he just completely ripped it
off?
Neil
I added a pic of the "bronze" gorilla to the photos section. It
actually looks much better than the pic makes it out to be. Remember,
you can get these for $19.99, not $199.00. Klatuu collectibles has them on
Ebay quite often.

|
.html Well apparently the multiple posts problem is supposed to have been
fixed up so I am enabling posting on the group again.
I have also gone through the messages on the Group and deleted all the
multiple posts so members reading the archived posts won't have to
wade through the same ones over and over again.
If it isn't fixed (which is quite possible with good old Yahoo) I'll
have to disable the posts again. Fingers crossed!

Duplicate Messages and Email Delivery
Update (8:00 am PST,
3/29): A fix was pushed at midnight (Pacific Time) that we believe has resolved
the problem for messages submitted after that time. However, it is possible that
some users of some groups may have continued to receive duplicates of messages
that were posted before midnight.

| Subject: (OT) Postal Force Joins 'Star Wars' |
.html.html .htmlFrom IMDB.com:
Postal Force Joins 'Star Wars'
The U.S. Postal Service plans to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars
with a commemorative set of stamps featuring characters from the movie. The set, which will bear the new 41-cent first-class rate, is set to go on sale on May 25, eleven days after the postage hike takes effect.
USPS Stamp Services director David Fallor told the BBC
Wednesday, "We believe these stamps have the potential of reaching the blockbuster status of the [1993] Elvis stamp." Terms of the postal service's licensing deal with Lucasfilm, which owns the rights
to the Star Wars characters, were not disclosed.
How about a 40th anniversary POTA US stamp of the scene of the ruined Statue of Liberty? How do we start a petition for that?
