I'd
say the crossover would be as people get outside the dome and THEN they would
know about each others' existence...
If neither knows the other exists, what's the point of a crossover story?

by all accounts a tiny little community that doesn't even know there is a

Yeah I
think it could be re-done successfully as a film but it would be so close to the
original I can't imagine why one would bother!

Check out the Hybrid Animals after the

Just to let folks know, Booth Colman has
decided to not attend the UK POTA convention in Birmingham at the end of the
month. He'd like to make an appearance in the UK but the scheduling was off. But
it sounds like a great event and my Urko helmet is off to Les Hemstock for
putting it together. Hopefully Booth will cross the pond soon.

I attended a Shrine Circus in New Orleans that year that featured a live appearance by Planet of the Apes characters. The costumes appeared to be real, but they were obviously being worn by the circus's regular clown performers. The "show" was short, incongruous, and very disappointing.
After the show, I bought several boxes of stale Planet of the Apes candy at the concession stand. Another disappointment.

Fox's "Lord of the Rings" wannabe hits DVD in
the States today. This is reportedly pretty awful and was written by the guys
who wrote Burton's "Apes". Fox has done well when they do small movies like
"Borat", "Napolean Dynamite" or "The Devil Wears Prada" (though I haven't
personally seen any of them) but they just can't seem to get their big FX epics
right. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Anyway, those who
want to engage in Fox bashing as therapy might want to rent it.

.html.html .htmlI'd like everyone to check out this link:
http://www.amazon.com/Great-Fox-War-Movies-Patton/dp/B000JJ5F0M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-0797824-2382301?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1174410281&sr=1-1
The Great Fox War Movies (Patton - Special Edition / The Longest Day / Tora! Tora! Tora! - Special Edition) (1970)
Apparently some time ago Fox put out this special package f three of its "War Movie" DVDs, including Frank Schaffner's PATTON.
Anyway, the set also included this:
This special edition collection is packaged in a beautiful, 162-page book: The Great Fox War Movies: A Visual Archive of Fox's Greatest War Films. The book contains an overview of classic war films as well as a behind-the-scenes making of each film included in the set (Patton, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and The Longest Day). Brimming with photos from each epic film and little-known production facts, this collection is a beautiful tribute to these award-winning classics.
I've also seen the latest issue of CinemaRetro magazine and it mentions this DVD package and that the editors of that mag had something to do with the making of the special edition book.
Now, one of these is those same guys I told you about before that did the recent commentaries for some Fox "Spy Movie" DVDs, and apparently wouldn't mind doing commentaries for a future DVD (probably Blu-ray) special edition of the APES films.
I'm thinking, "wouldn't it be great if such a special edition book were created on the classic APES film?"
So, if you haven't emailed the address I gave you before to give these guys some encourage mention to try to make such a project reality, please do so now.
Here's me first email on the subject (By the way, did this guy reply to any of you?):
OK everyone listen up.....
Recently there have been a series of Fox "Cold War/Spy" movies released on DVD in kind of mini-special editions, these have included the Arthur P. Jacobs/Mort Abraham's produced THE CHAIRMAN (1969), THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM (1966) and the 1966-67 James Coburn FLINT films. What's made these DVDs fun for me is that they all have commentary tracks by two uber movie geeks, Eddie Friedfeld and Lee Pfeiffer. Both are middle-aged film scholars who teach in colleges in New York City, and Lee Pfeiffer edits the magazine "Cinema Retro" out of England (see: www.cinemaretro.com), and they are huge fans of films from the 60's and 70's and, of course, that includes the APES films. In their commentaries for these recent Cold War/Spy DVDs they often mention the APES movies.
Anyway, I've had an email contact with one of them, Eddie Friedfeld, about getting all the APES movies commentary tracks for a future DVD release, perhaps a 40th Anniversary Blu-ray special edition. He and his partner have a desire to do it, and they'd like to hear from as many APES fans as possible -- in emails -- so as to show Fox there's support in the market for it.
So, I'm now asking EVERYONE in these Yahoo groups to email this guy and tell him you want commentary tracks for EACH film, and then anything else you desire for a future DVD release of the APES films. The FLINT films had a host of new featurettes, including a tribute to Jerry Goldsmith. The commentary tracks these two guys do are a lot of fun to listen to.
So, here's his name again... Eddie Friedfeld... and his email address is:
Q007solo@...
Also, spread the word to other APES fans you know who aren't in these Yahoo groups. Let's see what we can get done.

| Subject: Re: Part 2 of the POTA Audio Drama ready for download |
|
.html Well, let me clarify my position regarding the non-feasibility of a
POTA-LOGAN'S RUN crossover and the Dogs & Cats conundrum.
In order to explain how it is that all the dogs and cats "on Earth"
(as Armando tells Caesar) could be dead AND how there could be at
least two dogs living in the area where the Fugitives land (Arno's
dog and that other mutt briefly seen when the trio were approaching
the ruins of the San Francisco area), I worked out a scenario that
also took into account the existence of a group of "Scientists"
(from "The Legacy") who had had some kind of forewarning about the
impending Nuke War and took pains to plan ahead.
They buried those Vaults in various cities, and hermetically sealed a
number of holographic projectors in nearby areas so as to point the
way to those Vaults.
And -- in my scenario -- a group of these Scientists made sure that
they were in an orbiting science station, situated at the L5 position
of the Earth-Moon system, when the nukes started flyin'.
As to whether or not they had LIVING dogs and cats up there with them
in that L5 station, that doesn't really matter. What matters is that
they could just as easily have sample DNA from various breeds of dog
and cat -- a genome database, in other words.
From such a genome database, a more advanced group of Scientists --
their descendants living in the 25th Century or later, in other
words -- could bring back those long-dead species the same way that
Michael Crichton's scientists brought back once-extinct dinosaurs
in "JURASSIC PARK".
In my scenario, I have certain characters who leave Earth on an
interstellar mission from their "New America" -- the pole-shifted
island continent that was once named 'Australia' -- who return to
Earth in 3073... only to find that something bad has happened, not
only to their "New America" but to the rest of the world.
Thus, in MY scenario, the astronauts who had landed "more than ten
years ago" (from the perspective of Zaius and Urko in 3085) were from
another time period -- but NOT from the United States of America
circa the end of the 20th Century. Rather, they were New American
astronauts who left Earth circa 2500 and returned some 573 years of
EARTH-TIME later.
I'm not gonna go into all the details of this storyline, but suffice
to say that the science which enabled those few dogs to exist in
Galen's time -- in MY scenario -- derives from that remnant of
American scientists whose ancestors left those Vaults in Oakland and
elsewhere AND who re-colonized the island continent of Australia,
renaming it after their homeland ("New America") due, in part, to the
fact that a pole-shifted Australia wouldn't necessarily be wholly in
the southern hemisphere anymore; it ends up straddling the Equator.
Since the name "Australia" means "southland" (from the
Latin "australis"), it makes sense to those colonist-scientists to
give the place a new name. Colonists have always done so, naming
places like New Amsterdam, New York, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, New
England, etc etc.
Thus, when my New American astronaut characters get back to Earth in
3073 only to find things have gone bad, they will take with them from
New America to "old" America some surviving dogs that were on the
verge of becoming feral -- dogs that came to exist because on New
America scientists sought to bring back certain extinct species in a
JURASSIC PARK-kind of way. One dog -- back in 3073, just a puppy --
later becomes the personal pet of Prefect Veska's toddler son, Arno.
The human who gave that puppy to a certain chimp also told him that
the creature was called "Dog"... which is the name Arno calls it.
Arno didn't call his dog "Fido" or "Benji" or some such name -- or
even any 'ape' name, so to speak. He calls it "Dog". For all he
knows, it's the ONLY such tame animal in existence. He doesn't know
that calling it "Dog" would be like calling a human 'pet' "Man".
Yeah, it's a long and convoluted way to explain the aggravating
presence of a dog in the TV pilot episode (etc), but it also takes
into account other info from the TV series -- those Scientists
from "THE LEGACY" for instance. For what it's worth, I wish that the
POTA series had NOT included Arno's damn dog -- it would've been far
easier for me to reconcile the TV series with the movies that way!
But, what the f***!
As to this idea of cross-overing POTA and LOGAN'S RUN, though, well
I'll admit that the dogs & cats thing doesn't completely rule it out:
if I can unflub Arno's dog for the sake of an all-POTA scenario, then
that makes it possible to introduce living cats for the Old Man
played by Peter Ustinov in LOGAN'S RUN. Sure.
But I've also addressed another problem that I think completely rules
out any connection between the two concepts. In POTA there is a
NUCLEAR WAR that wipes out Man's civilization -- and which gives the
apes their justification to dominate Mankind in the harsh manner we
see in the films and episodes.
But in LOGAN'S RUN (the MGM film, that is), there cannot have been a
NUCLEAR war. Oh, there may have been all sorts of conventional wars
in the 21st Century leading up to the building of the City and all
that. But when Logan and Jessica get to the ruins of Washington D.C.,
they find WOODEN houses... BOOKS and PAINTINGS in the Capitol
Building... in other words: FLAMMABLE materials that had to have been
there during the POTA nuclear war. It is absolutely inconceivable to
me that Washington D.C. would've been spared as a nuke target in the
POTA scenario; and IF it had been nuked -- even by just one single
ten kiloton nuke -- then all those flammable materials would've been
ignited, flaming into ash.
I also see no evidence of a nuke blastwave in the ruins of Washington
we see in LOGAN'S RUN. Sure, those heavy masonry-built structures
might survive a nuke, but the wooden houses Logan, Jessica and the
Old Man pass by on their trip from D.C. to the domed City would've
been FLATTENED, blown apart by the blastwave of a nuke.
Another thing: in the ruins of New York City and its environs, the
nukes that had devasted that part of America had rendered the soil
poisonous. A blasted, lifeless wasteland. Yet in LOGAN'S RUN, the
ruins of Washington D.C. are overgrown with lush vegetation, with
vines having crawled their way up and around the Lincoln Memorial,
the Capitol Building, etc. And this, by the year 2274, a mere 256
years after 2018 (when BATTLE takes place, 27 years after CONQUEST).
Yet in the 3900's the NYC region is still a lifeless desert. Is it
reasonable that Washington could recuperate from exposure to nuke
radiation so soon, yet New York City could not?
Well, I don't think so. And I think that rules out the possibility of
any crossover between POTA and LOGAN'S RUN.
Patrick

.htmlI agree! I was totally excited by the idea and thought it was great
that someone was doing this... then I heard it. I don't knock anybody
involved for the attempt. I just wanted them to understand that
the "Lessons from the Lawgiver" that goes nowhere and isn't amusing,
Kermit the Frog's narration, Clint Eastwood as Col. Taylor, the
unnecessary swearing, the 10 minutes of sound effects that led to
nothing, and the music from the soundtrack just being randomly
inserted into the audio didn't make this die hard Apes fan want to
continue with the story. In fact, I dusted off my old Power Records
and they never sounded better!!! I never attacked or ridiculed,
especially just for the sake of picking on people who worked hard on
this. I just thought they would want honest feedback so they could
make improvements. Especially if they had plans for more stories in
the future... which, if done better, I would be very interested in
hearing.

.html.html .htmlCheck out this news from the Jerry Goldsmith website about the Fox films THE SAND PEBBLES and VON RYAN'S EXPRESS:
http://www.jerrygoldsmithonline.com/news.htm
This makes me very hopeful for contents of a future DVD release of POTA.
Also, check out the changing pictures on that news page to see Goldsmith wearing a gorilla mask while he's recording POTA's score!
