Dear KEVIN Harris,
Thank you for contacting us about creating a stamp for Planet of the
Apes.
Almost all subjects chosen to appear on U.S. stamps and postal
stationery are
suggested by the public. Each year, Americans submit proposals to the
United
States Postal Service® on literally thousands of different topics.
Every stamp
suggestion is considered, regardless of who makes it or how it is
presented. On
behalf of the Postmaster General™, the Citizens' Stamp Advisory
Committee (CSAC)
is tasked with evaluating the merits of all stamp proposals.
Established in
1957, the Committee provides the Postal Service™ with a "breadth of
judgment and
depth of experience in various areas that influence subject matter,
character
and beauty of postage stamps."
More information on this subject can be found at:
http://www.usps.com/communications/organization/csac.htm
If I can be of assistance to you in the future, please don't hesitate
to contact
me. Thank you for choosing the United States Postal Service®.

I just wanted to thank you for having commeorate stamps for the 30th
anniversary
for Star Wars and I want to know if there any chance to have a
collection of
stamps to deticate the 40th anniversary for the movie Planet of the
Apes. can
you please e-mail me on this. I thank you for reading this e-mail.

Film classic Star Wars has lost its
crown as the world's best sci-fi movie.
George Lucas's Star Wars debut has been usurped by the
little-known 2005 title Serenity in a poll of sci-fi favourites.
Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, is third, following
1977 classic Star Wars.
Planet Of The Apes scoops fourth place, followed by Keanu
Reeves's film The Matrix and Sigourney Weaver's Alien.
Others in the top ten include Fifties classic Forbidden
Planet, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Terminator, which
launched Arnold Schwarzenegger' s career.
The Michael J Fox time-travelling classic Back to the
Future takes tenth place in the SFX magazine poll of 3,000
fans.

apologised for pressuring people and explained I was in poor health and maybe
that has something to do with it. And yes, there was a question of a brain
tumoir and I was told that if I did have a tumour, it could also effect my
behaviour. So I was taking into account that this, and/or the stress I was
under, could have contributed to my approach and mayne I was being unfair.
Frankly - I don't think I was being unfair. I think it was really my call
to say "we have others who would like to have a turn." I guess it sounded
like a punishment or an ultimatum to some, but that's not REALLY my fault and
probably says more about what these people THINK of me as a person rather than
my actual behaviour.
And
yes, we should have realised when Dave Ballard was bad-mouthing Alan Maxwell,
that he is a lying two-faced prick. I think the emails to you about FAKE
SCROLLS should have alerted us too Neil that there is a PUBLIC Dave and a REAL
Dave!
Michael
-- I personally
thought you had every right to make decisions and ask questions especially
when things seemed to have stalled. It worked fine with 'Beast'. Other people
even questioned on the group why things were suddenly going slower than they
had been.
I don't think it
was right for people working on the project to get the hump and tell you they
would only work at their pace as they were doing it for free and out of the
goodness of their hearts as after all it was decided before the project began
that there was a timeline involved and a desire to get the comics out there
and available for the fans. For the first few issues it worked fine and
even Alan Maxwell, whom we were told was not to be relied upon to get
something completed, did a great job getting the covers cleaned and fixed up
and only slowed down that one time when his mouse was stuffed and had to be
replaced or something like that.
And like you say
you had other people lined up to do the various 'jobs' and when you
mentioned that it seems to me to have caused a couple of them to really
get the shits.
Neil
So
here's the question - is it fair for me to say that I paid for 'em and
assembled the team, so if I feel someone's dragging his/her ass I can
replace them?
This is the basis of my opinion that I was treated incredibly
unfairly so I would like you to answer this. Neil, and anyone else
here who was also involved, would you please tell me what you think too
please?
.

The Michael J Fox time-travelling classic Back to the
Future takes tenth place in the SFX magazine poll of 3,000
fans.

an article on Beneath, issue 103 has a tribute to Arthur P. Jacobs and issue 108 has an article on Battle. Thanks to Chris Lawless for lending me copies of these issues from his collection so I could scan them.

I mean they could have easily drawn any generic gorilla or even Cornelius/Zira/Zaius, etc. (or similes of them) and yet they went with the BATTLE scenario...
That's what sucks with a lot of those items... So many of the pictures, etc. used are primarily from BATTLE and to a lesser extent, ESCAPE....

I wrote to the USPS to request a stamp (the same way the other member here did) and I received the same reply that he did...
However, there is an address that can be written to to request stamps. The address is:
CITIZENS' STAMP ADVISORY COMMITTEE
U.S. POSTAL SERVICE
1735 N LYNN ST STE 5013
ARLINGTON VA 22209-6432
I have not written to them yet, so I have no idea if they would even reply at all...
Here is what I wrote when I wrote the USPS to request a set of anniversary stamps for PLANET (and yes, PLANET is the only one of those films that actually deserves to have itself on a stamp...) Feel free to copy this
letter if you write the advisory committee...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
USPS,
It has come to my attention that you're going to be issuing a set of STAR
WARS stamps to commemorate it's 30th anniversary.
Since you're doing a set of stamps for that film, I'd like to suggest that
you create a set of commemorative (anniversary) stamps for the classic 1968 film PLANET OF THE APES.
PLANET OF THE APES is a cultural icon and it's impact is still felt today...
As a matter of fact, it was just voted # 4 in a list of top Sci-fi films of
all time. It was also voted into The Library of Congress as one of America's
great and important films. I believe that speaks very highly of it's continued
popularity and it's significance as a film.
2008 is the 40th anniversary of that classic film, and I believe that a set
of commemorative stamps is fitting for such an important film.
Thank you for your consideration,
For those who just aren't feeling the love for Jason, Alexander and the
gang (you know who you are), we have some extra treats this week. First we
have three articles from Famous Monsters magazine. Issue 80 has an article on
Beneath, issue 103 has a tribute to Arthur P. Jacobs and issue 108 has an
article on Battle. Thanks to Chris Lawless for lending me copies of these
issues from his collection so I could scan them.
Also now available is the Conquest pressbook, scanned by James
Aquila.
Hey
Sarah
Welcome to the group!
There
are a few fan produced comics.
There's a couple from a Scottish fellow, Mike McColm.
One is
about Milo finding the ship, another is a finale to the TV Show. I like
these comics. They are certainly great for a fan-produced item. I'll
try to find a link or 2.
Neil
has been involved in quite a few comics.
The
first was Beware the Beast.
You
can see this on Hunter Goatley's website (link coming) or I can provide you
a complete version with additional pages (unavailable elsewhere) - email me off
After
Beware the Beast, Neil and I wanted to give the fans on the groups something to
discuss.
So we
designed a comic in strip form, hoping we could get some stimulating
conversations going.
This
srtip was entitled "WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES". It got a few comments
but the objective essentially failed. It was a lot of fun though, and
while it was invented as a "throwaway" story, and a formulaic strip not to be
taken too seriously, it really is pretty cool.
OK, so I watch PLANET yesterday for the umpteenth time (I stopped counting after 250 viewings), and what did I spot I've never noticed before? Powerlines in a
shot! It's at 1:23:09 into the movie, after Lucius helps Taylor and Nova escape and the camera titles up and Zira says the line, "I told you not to bring the other one!" Freeze the shot and
look at what's just behind Lucius' back. Three powerlines against the blue sky. Of course, there would have had to have been electricity brought into the Fox ranch to power all the equipment, so I
guess here are three of the lines bringing it in. Incredible I never noticed it before.
Later in the movie, at 1:29:11, I also noticed, atop a cliff just before the nose of Heston's horse covers it (it goes past very quickly), what looks like a tower for powerlines in the Arizona desert.
Check it out.
It looks to me, like a boxed set of the five original movies, and the documentary "Behind..." (re-titled "Journey Back to..."), released just prior to the Tim Burton
movie. I think it's a safe bet that it includes nothing new, particularly. It might be a European, or Mexican release.
Thanks for the update, Ty. I personally consider Revolution to be
one of the best Apes stories ever published, and I'm glad to hear
it's being given the trade paperback treatment so more fans can pick
it up. A lot of people had trouble finding the individual issues,
for some reaosn. I'll spread the word to anyone I know that might
buy it, as I'd love to see what you have in store for Empire on the
Planet of the Apes.
To be honest, I generally don't buy trade paperbacks because I
already have the original comics and don't want to buy the same thing
twice. However, I'm going to make an exception in this case because
of the new material rumored to be included, and because I want to
support the continuation of Mr. Comics' POTA line.
I know some fans were less thrilled with it than I was, but I can
genuinely say I thought Revolution was fantastic. Excellent artwork,
great dialog and an original premise that explained a lot of oddities
in the later films -- such as how the heck the apes suddenly evolved
so quickly -- while giving air time to nearly all the important apes
of the movies. I particularly enjoyed Hasslein's Notes, Caesar's
Journals and the backup stories, all of which offered great insight
into the mythos. My favorite backup story would probably be the one
about Armando's circus, with the alternate-future story about Zaius
and Milo coming in a close second.
Sadly, Virgil and Mandemus never showed up, though I understand
you're planning to use Mandemus in Empire if it's published. I'd also
love to see a tie-in to the TV series -- perhaps having the Zaius of
3978 recalling his ancestor, the Zaius of 3085...or perhaps having an
older Galen recalling the day he bid farewell to Burke and
Virdon...but I'm sure you already know what you plan to write about. :)
I'd find that quite unappealing!
There is no proof that the two Zaius figures are related at all... Just 'cause their names are the same doesn't mean they'd be related... It'd be like saying that Galen's descendant is Dr. Galen
from PLANET...
Hello.
I am new to this group.
I have read old emails that
talk about comics produced by fans.
Can someone please tell me
more.
I perchase the new comics "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes"
and I saw some art from Neil Foster. My first thought was that he should
have been used for the 6 comics.
Is Neil Foster the illustrator of
the fan comics?
Hey
Sarah
Welcome to the group!
There are a few fan produced comics.
There's a couple from a Scottish fellow, Mike
McColm.
One
is about Milo finding the ship, another is a finale to the TV Show. I
like these comics. They are certainly great for a fan-produced
item. I'll try to find a link or 2.
Neil
has been involved in quite a few comics.
So
we designed a comic in strip form, hoping we could get some stimulating
conversations going.
This
srtip was entitled "WITHIN THE PLANET OF THE APES". It got a few
comments but the objective essentially failed. It was a lot of fun
though, and while it was invented as a "throwaway" story, and a formulaic
strip not to be taken too seriously, it really is pretty cool.
Terror lovers, we'll get back to Jason and Alexander in issue 239. This week's issue also includes a two page letter column.
Right after I posted last week, Hunter added the Cracked parody "Planets of the Creatures," contributed by Neil Foster. Thanks Neil, and sorry I was too quick with last week's announcement to include
-- Well no,
apparently it's because they don't want to open up old wounds which on the
surface seems fair enough. As you would recall the next issue (#7) is the
one that heavily promoted the Fan Club which was okay at the time but then
became a bone of contention later due to the use of the word 'official'.
That issue also includes the first part of Beware the Beast which was presented
by 'The Official International Planet of the Apes Fan Club' so one
can understand their reluctance I suppose.
The following
issue (#8) is the one with the infamous 'Lost Episodes' hoax about how a UK
company was going to make a 2nd series of the TV show with no disclaimer
that it was a false article, being only intended as a bit of fun, with
those of us who worked on it (I provided some artwork for it) asked to keep
it a secret.
It had such a
negative reaction when it came out in the UK from some fans who were upset at
being fooled, that Mr. Ballard emailed me at the time and, as it was yet to be seen by
US readers, asked me:
"If you could help
us by posting a message saying something like... "I've read it and I think it's
a brilliant 'spoof', well done John, you almost had me" - it might help
set the 'mood' that was intended and enable everyone to enjoy the article rather
than get pissed off at it."
So I
can sort of understand the reasons why they wouldn't want to open that
can of worms again by making it available on-line.
From what I can
make out though, because I asked a completely innocent question the other month
about the change in policy about making the early issues available on-line there
seems to have been a decision not to continue so as not to cause any trouble.
So it looks like
it's my fault for asking a completely innocent question, sorry folks.
I didn't intend to upset anyone or stop the on-line availability of past
issues of Simian Scrolls but it seems these days anything I say or ask
about that magazine seems to be met with an overly sensitive
reaction from parties involved with it.
Once again I
apologise for any unintended reaction due to my original
question.
But you can see how the casual viewer might make that mistake. Given
that the writers of the movies and tv series weren't too bothered with
details like dates, etc, I wonder why they made that reference- was it
a lazy attempt to tie in with the movies, or a plot device they planned
to come back to, or just to set the scenario that Urko and Zaius knew
how dangerous the astronauts could be? <.html
If not someone then maybe something, like equipment or even a ship?
Also I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for the original
astronauts to have faked their deaths: Galen kind of did that in the
last episode.
But I think that's all pretty unlikely as they didn't have any type
of story arc running through the series. <.html
=============================================================
*** Let me chime in here, if I may, folks.
If one assumes -- as I do -- that the TV series adventures happen in
the same "universe" as the 5 films, especially in a Circular Timeline
scenario (as I accept, for a number of reasons which I won't go into
here), then anybody who thinks or thought that the TV Zaius might be
the same Zaius in "PLANET" and "BENEATH" is just daft!
The humans living in the Ape-dominated region near the New York
Forbidden Zone are MUTE animals, whereas the humans living in the Ape-
dominated region near the "forbidden cities" of San Francisco and
Oakland still have the power of speech and are slaves of the Apes.
Fans are free to interpret the TV show as being in a
different "universe" from the films, but as for me I prefer to link
all the live-action APES adventures under the single "universe"
umbrella, with the TV show taking place roughly halfway
between "BATTLE" and "PLANET", representing a change from the rosy
living-together-in-imperfect-harmony scene at the end of "BATTLE"
(circa 2670 A.D.) where the Apes have proceeded not only to dominate
the race of Man but also to have ERASED MAN'S HISTORY of former
dominance, so that Galen grew up being taught that "Apes have ALWAYS
ruled the world!"
At the end of "PLANET", Dr. Zaius tells Taylor: "All my life I've
awaited your coming, and dreaded it -- like Death itself!" Taylor
refers to him as the "Guardian of the Terrible Secret". The secret
Zaius kept had to have been told to him fairly soon after he became
enough of a responsible adult to have it entrusted to him -- he
says "ALL MY LIFE" after all. Who might have known the secret BEFORE
he learned it? Who entrusted him with that secret?
We could imagine a number of differing possibilities. A "secret
society" with a "Grand Master" knowing that ultimate Secret and
entrusting it to his successor -- perhaps ONLY to his successor, so
that only ONE ape at any one time knows that secret in addition to
the Grand Master.
Or, it could've been a secret passed down from Father-to-Son,
generation after generation, with Zaius' father having passed that
secret onto him when he was a young yet mature-for-his-age Ape.
Or, Zaius' father could, himself, have been the Grand Master of that
secret society, and -- when he died -- his son, Zaius, ascended in
rank to the position of Grand Master. Perhaps the "office" referred
to as "CHIEF DEFENDER OF THE FAITH" -- though PUBLICLY pretending
that Apes have always been the "Lords of the planet" ever since the
simian God created the Ape in His own image -- also PRIVATELY keeps
the Terrible Secret of Man's former dominance. Zaius, in private,
acknowledged to Taylor that he was a closet heretic, as much so as
Zira and Cornelius became public heretics, due to his suspicion that
Taylor was a mutant.
The 1st film dates the Nuke War to roughly within a generation of
Taylor's flight from Earth -- Cornelius dates the human fossils
at "roughly" 700 years prior to the Carnivorous Gorilla fossils which
he dates to 1,300 years ago (i.e. before the year in which "PLANET"
takes place, which I accept as 3955 due to the sequels).
So, "roughly" 1300 + 700 years earlier would put the ruins of human
civilization at or near the end of the 20th Century.
At some point AFTER the man-made catastrophe that ended his
civilization, not only did Apes eventually degrade Man to the status
of a mute animal, but the Apes were themselves made to be
historically BLIND to the truth about the Past -- fooled by their
Lawgiver (if not BEFORE that) into believing their "Articles of
Faith" regarding simian dominance ever since the Creation.
But at least ONE ape would know the Truth about Man, and that Ape
would've HAD to pass that secret on to a successor, generation after
generation, down through the years, at LEAST from the time of the
Lawgiver (which was 1,200 years prior to "PLANET", circa 2755 A.D.).
Thus, we shouldn't have been all that surprised to find, in 3085
A.D., that the Apes have subjugated Man and replaced the history
recited by the "nice" Lawgiver (portrayed by John Huston) in 2670 to
the interracial group of "equals" -- Chimps & Humans & Orangutans but
NO GORILLAS -- with a history that has erased Man's prior history of
superior civilization. Nor should we have been surprised to see that
the ONE ape who knows the True history just happens to be in the top
position in the Ape government: an orangutan named ZAIUS.
The obvious conclusion is that Chief Councillor ZAIUS is a direct
lineal ancestor of the Doctor ZAIUS (Chief Defender of the Faith) who
will live 870 years later, and that the SAME "terrible secret" which
Dr. Zaius knows in 3955 was handed down to him from his father, who
learned it from HIS father, who learned it from HIS father...
... etc etc etc etc...
... who learned it from Chief Councillor Zaius, who had learned it
from HIS father...
In "PLANET" Zaius mentions that he has a "granddaughter" who plays
with human dolls. That tells us that he has either a SON, a DAUGHTER,
or perhaps BOTH. If he has a son, perhaps he has already entrusted
him with the Terrible Secret. Or, perhaps not. IF Zaius had some sort
of prior knowledge of the End of the World occurring in his lifetime
(based on the "date meter" information that Caesar's mother
mentions, "Thirty-Nine... Fifty..." [the "something" being cut off by
the time Caesar saw and heard those tapes in "BATTLE"]), then maybe
Zaius did NOT yet inform his own son, his would-be successor.
In my scenario, though, Zaius DOES have a son and he DID show him the
secret -- by taking him to see the half-buried Statue of Liberty.
I've got a scene in my POTA-opus planned whereby Zaius not only takes
his adult son out (by boat) to the site of the Statue in 3949 A.D. or
so (i.e. about a year before the date of Doomsday, according to one
of the "Secret Scrolls"), but he also shows those "history scrolls
which were kept hidden from the masses" to his son, to teach to him
the true history of the world... to reveal to him knowledge that will
make him a closet heretic who MUST keep the secret.
On pain of death.
In my scenario, Zaius warns his own son that he must agree to keep
the secret -- he must SWEAR to it -- or he will be killed. Zaius is
prepared to kill his own son in the shadow of the Statue if his son
defiantly threatens to reveal the Truth to the rest of Ape City, just
as Zaius' father had had to threaten HIM a generation earlier.
Zaius' son, then, will reluctantly agree to keep the Secret, knowing
that although the Lawgiver commanded that "Ape must never kill Ape",
his own father -- like all their fathers before, going back at least
to the time of the Lawgiver -- was prepared to do just that.
I think I mentioned the next bit a few years ago, but in my scenario
I'm having it that the "Hunt Leader" character in "PLANET" --
["What's Doctor Zira trying to prove?"] -- is the same dead gorilla
whose funeral Taylor interrupts the next day. Meaning... that he DIED
later on after the scene where Taylor tried to reveal his
intelligence by writing in the sand in the outdoor cage.
The "Hunt Leader" who attempts to commandeer Zira and Lucius' wagon
(when they smuggle Taylor and Nova out of Ape City), then, is the
SUCCESSOR to the earlier Hunt Leader: in my scenario, the successor
Hunt Leader is URSUS, who parrots his own anti-human sentiment
in "BENEATH", having said earlier that "The only good human is a DEAD
human!"
The big question: What was the cause-of-death of the 1st Hunt Leader?
Natural causes? Or... could it have been murder?
In my scenario, the 1st Hunt Leader had discovered -- after fellow
hunter Ursus and others -- that at least ONE of the humans captured
in the hunt could TALK. He confronted Zaius about it, or Zaius --
having somebody he trusted keeping an eye on Landon (who was being
kept in seclusion, of course) -- stepped in when the Hunt Leader
found out about Landon and was about to raise a ruckus.
The upshot is that the Hunt Leader winds up DEAD and his funeral is
held the very next day.
And, perhaps the widowed wife of the Hunt Leader suspects foul play.
What would she do? To whom could she turn to ferret out the truth?
In my scenario, Zaius' son is in the Ministry of Justice. He knows
the Terrible Secret and wishes he could tell it to everybody else...
to ANYbody else... hating the fact that the Truth has been hidden
from everybody by his own ancestors "for their own good"... but he
has given his oath that he won't divulge the Secret. He knows that
his father will either kill him or have him killed if he ever goes
back on his word. On the oath he was coerced into giving, on pain of
death when his father took him out to see the Statue, and revealed
those original history scrolls to him.
The one ape he KNOWS to be capable of murder is... his own father. If
his dad, Zaius, is prepared to kill his own son in order to keep the
Terrible Secret, then it follows that he would also be prepared to
kill ANY OTHER APE who might discover the Secret and attempt to
divulge it to the masses.
If, he reasons, the Hunt Leader had discovered some evidence
regarding the Terrible Secret and then foolishly told Zaius that he
was going to REVEAL it to everybody as soon as he could... then that
orangutan would know that his father, Zaius, would not hesitate to
kill him. Probably with some kind of poison -- say, arsenic in a cup
of carrot juice or apricot wine?
But how to PROVE such a suspicion!
There's the fact that the escaped human who had crashed that funeral
had soon afterwards been caught -- and then he had TALKED! One of the
humans who had been captured at the last hunt... he could TALK. So,
too, might OTHERS have been able to talk. And if the Hunt Leader,
then, right before his sudden death, had HEARD a talking human prior
to Taylor's very public outburst, and had threatened to divulge such
information to the yet-ignorant public... then that would be MOTIVE
for Zaius to murder him.
Remember that scene in Boulle's novel, where an ape brain surgeon
named Helius electrically stimulates the exposed brain-matter of
human test subjects... so that Ulysse Merou hears the "beast"-like
humans SPEAK, divulging ancestral memories dating back thousands of
years?
In my scenario, after Landon is lobotomized yet BEFORE he dies and is
stuffed and placed next to Dodge in the Great Hall of the Zaius
Museum... a similar experiment is done on him. After Taylor's
tribunal, where he publicly claimed that the human who had suffered a
skull fracture during the Hunt (allegedly) was, like him, another
talking human... Zaius' son suspects that his father had had him
lobotomized, in order to prevent other apes from finding out about
the existence of one (and possibly more) talking humans in their
vicinity -- just as Taylor accused: "YOU did that to him, damn you!
You cut out his memory, you took his identity, and that's what you
want to do to ME!"
It's too bad that a lobotomized human cannot talk, even if he COULD
talk earlier. Perhaps he was a witness to Zaius' murder-by-poison of
the Hunt Leader... but, if so, he's a vegetable now, and can't be
questioned as an eyewitness. His brain's been cut up. He can't be
useful in the covert murder investigation...
... or CAN he?
I'm having it that a "Doctor Helius" -- a scientist known to Zira,
but 'loyal' to Zaius, in fact the very "fine veterinary surgeon"
Zaius mentioned at the Tribunal who "saved" Landon's life by
operating on him after his alleged "skull fracture" -- that this
Doctor Helius did cut up or cut out Landon's frontal lobes... but he
did so KNOWING THAT LANDON'S MIND WAS STILL INSIDE WHAT IS LEFT OF
HIS BRAIN, dormant though it may be.
There's an excellent book called "THE HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE" by a guy
named Michael Talbot. On page 13 he references an experiment:
-------------------------------------------------------------
What [neuropsychologist Karl] Lashley had done was to train rats to
perform a variety of tasks, such as run a maze. Then he surgically
removed various portions of their brains and retested them. His aim
was literally to cut out the area of the rats' brains containing the
memory of their maze-running ability. To his surprise he found that
no matter what portion of their brains he cut out, he could not
eradicate their memories. Often the rats' motor skills were impaired
and they stumbled clumsily through the mazes, but even with massive
portions of their brains removed, their memories remained stubbornly
intact.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Thus, I'm having Doctor Helius perform a post-lobotomy experiment on
Landon in the presence of Zaius' son, whom he has told (in
confidence) of his "memory experiments" in human test subjects. In
other words, what Karl Lashley did with a bunch of rats -- cutting
chunks of their brains out in an attempt to excise a previously-
learned maze-running memory believed to be localized in the brain --
Helius did with a bunch of humans. He knew that he could not erase
the memories or identities of the talking human (Landon) based on
prior experiments he had performed on the mute "animal" humans... but
those memories would lie dormant in the post-operative test subject
UNLESS AND UNTIL THOSE MEMORIES COULD BE STIMULATED BACK TO THE
SURFACE VIA ELECTRICAL STIMULATION.
Thus, in a scene that takes place after Zira and Lucius smuggle
Taylor and Nova out of Ape City (etc), and BEFORE Landon eventually
dies, Helius will electrically stimulate his brain while Zaius' son
observes. Zaius, of course, will be out-of-town, off chasing after
the fugitive heretics and their astronaut friend... so the son of
Zaius will have an opportunity to seek after the truth unimpeded by
the presence of his father.
And, just as Ulysse Merou hears a "mute" human TALK in Boulle's
novel, so too will Zaius' son hear LANDON speak again, his brain-
damaged mind once more able to express itself vocally due to
electrical stimulation of his brain -- for although Zaius had had
Helius operate on Landon's BRAIN, he DID NOT have him cut out his
vocal cords, which enables Landon later to USE those speech organs
again, in extraordinary circumstances.
Landon will be coaxed into describing the scene he witnessed with
tongue-tied horror, as the gorilla Hunt Leader berates Zaius for
conspiring to cover-up this amazing "find" (a talking human), just as
he must have been covering up "heretical" evidence all along...
Landon will describe how Zaius then managed to poison the gorilla,
who KNEW he had been poisoned, too late to change the outcome.
Landon, then, will have been scared shitless, begging for his life,
promising never to utter a sound... with Zaius looking at him with
hatred and contempt prior to questioning him: "Are there others like
you?... How many?..." etc.
Zaius' son, then, will have the proof he needs, even if it can't be
used in court. At the very least, it is something he can confront his
father about: "Dad, there was a WITNESS to your murder of the Hunt
Leader... the talking human Taylor called 'Landon'... Before he died,
he was able to describe the events leading up to the time he was
lobotomized..." etc etc. "I know you're a murderer, father."
And how could Zaius, then, respond to that? Zaius, confronted by the
ONLY ape who KNOWS that he was willing and able to kill another ape
(his own son) in order to preserve the Terrible Secret... how can he
justify his actions?
He doesn't need to. He still has his own son's oath not to divulge
the Secret, and just as Cornelius will have no proof after the
explosives destroy the evidence in the Cave, so too will Zaius' son
have no evidence of the murder of the Hunt Leader with Landon dead.
Only the fellow testimony of Doctor Helius, who -- although willing
to reveal to Zaius' son the truth that the brain-stimulation
experiment showed -- is still loyal to Zaius, having been willing,
before, to cut up Landon's brain in order to further the plot
to "expose" Zira and Cornelius at Taylor's "trial".
Helius isn't a fool. He knows that with no admissible evidence to be
used against Zaius, his son won't be able to bring charges against
him for murder. So, Helius won't talk; and, if subpoena'd to appear
before a Grand Jury, he tells Zaius' son that he'd sooner LIE than
lend his eyewitness testimony to destroy Zaius. Those orangutans tend
to stick together... Zaius' son being perhaps the only honorable one
around then, stymied against getting justice for the murdered gorilla.
Thus, on his return from the Forbidden Zone (after "PLANET" and
before "BENEATH"), Zaius will have to come to some kind of
understanding with his son -- a son who detests him for being a
latter-day "Aldo", an ape who has killed another ape. All in order to
keep a Secret that he and their ancestral line considered too
dangerous for the masses to know.
One of the reasons Zaius will go back into the Forbidden Zone, to
accompany Ursus and his army, will be because he knows that it's only
a matter of time before his estranged son blurts out the truth about
his murdering father. Zaius, heartsick over having had to do horrible
things in order to keep the burdensome Secret, won't want to go
further with his threat against his son, a son he won't be able to
restrain much longer. Rather than face that music in Ape City during
Ursus' absence during the Invasion, Zaius elects to accompany him,
hoping (perhaps) to make a difference should the occasion arise.
Doomsday was SUPPOSED to have arrived in "3950" (according to the
ancient scroll, which told how the "ghost" of Caesar's mother
revealed that date to him after he "descended into the Netherworld"
and acquired that Knowledge from his dead parents). Perhaps doomsday
had only been delayed half a decade, he muses. Zaius knew that
a "ship from outer space" -- from Earth's human-dominated Past --
would show up in his time, because the "parent apes" of the Ape King
CAESAR would fly in that ship and go backwards through Time so as to
give birth to their royal heir at the dawn of simian civilization.
When he eventually discovers that Zira is pregnant with a child by
her fiancee/husband Cornelius, Zaius suspects that THEY must be
the "parents apes" of Caesar... because it would make perfect sense
for Caesar to name his own son after his father: CORNELIUS. The
murdered child-heir to the simian throne.
"So... think well before you act," Zaius admonishes Cornelius and
Zira. He talks of "the whole FUTURE of our civilization" which may be
theirs to preserve or destroy. What if he already knows, then, that
their civilization's FUTURE actually lies at its BEGINNING?
Zira's pregnancy is the penultimate tidbit of knowledge that will
complete the circle for Zaius. All that's left is the "bright white
blinding light" that would be witnessed from Space... the destruction
of the planet of the apes. And, when Zaius sees "the instrument of
[the] God" of Mendez XXVI, is it any wonder that he KNOWS that it is
a "weapon built by Man" which "will destroy us all"? How else could
he KNOW this to be true? Has he ever seen a missile before? Did he
hear Mendez call it a "bomb"? NO, he didn't.
Zaius, when confronted with the mortally wounded Taylor near the
control panel dais of the Doomsday Bomb, has lived his entire life
keeping the Secret his distant ancestors had been keeping for well
over a thousand years. The REASON he's kept that Secret is due to an
ideological conviction that "Man is evil, capable of nothing but
destruction!" Rather than jump in front of Taylor and PREVENT him
from triggering the Bomb, Zaius just STANDS THERE... and LETS HIM
DETONATE IT.
Why???
Because, by allowing Taylor to destroy the world, Zaius is being
PROVED RIGHT about Man... AND, by allowing the world to be destroyed,
he is allowing that act to create the unique circumstances which will
allow a re-orbiting spaceship to be thrown into the Timewarp which he
knows MUST happen, to send the pregnant Zira back in Time to 1973 so
that she can give birth to the Ape King CAESAR... and begin the
history of Ape Civilization. Zaius knows that the Future of his
people lies in the distant Past. And only a time-warping spaceship
can get that to happen... and only the explosion of the Doomsday Bomb
can trigger that journey back to the Beginning.
I rented from Netflix this DVD of an obscure 1967 Doris Day movie "Caprice." Why? Well, because it happens to feature a rare appearance by Robert
"Landon" Gunner, and has an even rarer cameo by POTA director of photography Leon Shamroy, who was also the DP on this picture. Amazingly Fox has provided a lot of extras with this movie including a
commentary track, where the Gunner POTA connection is mentioned, AND more importantly a couple of those "Dick Strout Radio Interviews." Both are listened to while you view a collection of stills and
original ads and poster images. Now, if Fox has these "radio interviews" from this nearly forgotten movie, I'll bet they also have the ones for POTA '68 mentioned in the pressbook. Perhaps
they'll show up in a future APES DVD release? Well, let's bloody hope so!
In other news, both "Fantastic Voyage" (1966) and the original "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961) movie will be re-released in special edition DVDs in June. Both will have commentary
tracks and new featurettes. Let's see if any "radio interviews" pop up on them too. Both DVDs also feature original ad art on their covers and these can be viewed on Amazon.com, if you care to
look them up.
I'm getting the strong feeling that next year will see a new DVD special edition of at least PLANET! Let's bloody well hope so!
in the shadow of the Statue if his son defiantly threatens to reveal the
Truth to the rest of Ape City, just as Zaius' father had had to threaten
HIM a generation earlier.
Zaius' son, then, will reluctantly agree to
keep the Secret, knowing that although the Lawgiver commanded that "Ape
must never kill Ape", his own father -- like all their fathers before,
going back at least to the time of the Lawgiver -- was prepared to do just
that.
I think I mentioned the next bit a few years ago, but in my
scenario I'm having it that the "Hunt Leader" character in "PLANET" --
["What's Doctor Zira trying to prove?"] -- is the same dead gorilla
whose funeral Taylor interrupts the next day. Meaning... that he DIED
later on after the scene where Taylor tried to reveal his intelligence
by writing in the sand in the outdoor cage.
The "Hunt Leader" who
attempts to commandeer Zira and Lucius' wagon (when they smuggle Taylor
and Nova out of Ape City), then, is the SUCCESSOR to the earlier Hunt
Leader: in my scenario, the successor Hunt Leader is URSUS, who parrots
his own anti-human sentiment in "BENEATH", having said earlier that "The
only good human is a DEAD human!"
The big question: What was the
cause-of-death of the 1st Hunt Leader? Natural causes? Or... could it have
been murder?
In my scenario, the 1st Hunt Leader had discovered --
after fellow hunter Ursus and others -- that at least ONE of the humans
captured in the hunt could TALK. He confronted Zaius about it, or Zaius --
having somebody he trusted keeping an eye on Landon (who was being
kept in seclusion, of course) -- stepped in when the Hunt Leader found
out about Landon and was about to raise a ruckus.
The upshot is that
the Hunt Leader winds up DEAD and his funeral is held the very next
day.
And, perhaps the widowed wife of the Hunt Leader suspects foul
play. What would she do? To whom could she turn to ferret out the
truth?
In my scenario, Zaius' son is in the Ministry of Justice. He
knows the Terrible Secret and wishes he could tell it to everybody else...
to ANYbody else... hating the fact that the Truth has been hidden from
everybody by his own ancestors "for their own good"... but he has given
his oath that he won't divulge the Secret. He knows that his father will
either kill him or have him killed if he ever goes back on his word. On
the oath he was coerced into giving, on pain of death when his father took
him out to see the Statue, and revealed those original history scrolls to
him.
The one ape he KNOWS to be capable of murder is... his own father.
If his dad, Zaius, is prepared to kill his own son in order to keep the
Terrible Secret, then it follows that he would also be prepared to
kill ANY OTHER APE who might discover the Secret and attempt to
divulge it to the masses.
If, he reasons, the Hunt Leader had
discovered some evidence regarding the Terrible Secret and then foolishly
told Zaius that he was going to REVEAL it to everybody as soon as he
could... then that orangutan would know that his father, Zaius, would not
hesitate to kill him. Probably with some kind of poison -- say, arsenic in
a cup of carrot juice or apricot wine?
But how to PROVE such a
suspicion!
There's the fact that the escaped human who had crashed
that funeral had soon afterwards been caught -- and then he had TALKED!
One of the humans who had been captured at the last hunt... he could TALK.
So, too, might OTHERS have been able to talk. And if the Hunt Leader,
then, right before his sudden death, had HEARD a talking human prior
to Taylor's very public outburst, and had threatened to divulge such
information to the yet-ignorant public... then that would be MOTIVE
for Zaius to murder him.
Remember that scene in Boulle's novel,
where an ape brain surgeon named Helius electrically stimulates the
exposed brain-matter of human test subjects... so that Ulysse Merou hears
the "beast"-like humans SPEAK, divulging ancestral memories dating back
thousands of years?
In my scenario, after Landon is lobotomized yet
BEFORE he dies and is stuffed and placed next to Dodge in the Great Hall
of the Zaius Museum... a similar experiment is done on him. After Taylor's
tribunal, where he publicly claimed that the human who had suffered a
skull fracture during the Hunt (allegedly) was, like him, another
talking human... Zaius' son suspects that his father had had him
lobotomized, in order to prevent other apes from finding out about the
existence of one (and possibly more) talking humans in their vicinity --
just as Taylor accused: "YOU did that to him, damn you! You cut out his
memory, you took his identity, and that's what you want to do to
ME!"
It's too bad that a lobotomized human cannot talk, even if he
COULD talk earlier. Perhaps he was a witness to Zaius' murder-by-poison of
the Hunt Leader... but, if so, he's a vegetable now, and can't be
questioned as an eyewitness. His brain's been cut up. He can't be
useful in the covert murder investigation. ..
... or CAN
he?
I'm having it that a "Doctor Helius" -- a scientist known to Zira,
but 'loyal' to Zaius, in fact the very "fine veterinary surgeon" Zaius
mentioned at the Tribunal who "saved" Landon's life by operating on him
after his alleged "skull fracture" -- that this Doctor Helius did cut up
or cut out Landon's frontal lobes... but he did so KNOWING THAT LANDON'S
MIND WAS STILL INSIDE WHAT IS LEFT OF HIS BRAIN, dormant though it may
be.
There's an excellent book called "THE HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE" by a
guy named Michael Talbot. On page 13 he references an
experiment:
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - What
[neuropsychologist Karl] Lashley had done was to train rats to perform a
variety of tasks, such as run a maze. Then he surgically removed various
portions of their brains and retested them. His aim was literally to cut
out the area of the rats' brains containing the memory of their
maze-running ability. To his surprise he found that no matter what portion
of their brains he cut out, he could not eradicate their memories. Often
the rats' motor skills were impaired and they stumbled clumsily through
the mazes, but even with massive portions of their brains removed, their
memories remained stubbornly
intact. ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -
Thus,
I'm having Doctor Helius perform a post-lobotomy experiment on Landon in
the presence of Zaius' son, whom he has told (in confidence) of his
"memory experiments" in human test subjects. In other words, what Karl
Lashley did with a bunch of rats -- cutting chunks of their brains out in
an attempt to excise a previously- learned maze-running memory believed to
be localized in the brain -- Helius did with a bunch of humans. He knew
that he could not erase the memories or identities of the talking human
(Landon) based on prior experiments he had performed on the mute "animal"
humans... but those memories would lie dormant in the post-operative test
subject UNLESS AND UNTIL THOSE MEMORIES COULD BE STIMULATED BACK TO THE
SURFACE VIA ELECTRICAL STIMULATION.
Thus, in a scene that takes
place after Zira and Lucius smuggle Taylor and Nova out of Ape City (etc),
and BEFORE Landon eventually dies, Helius will electrically stimulate his
brain while Zaius' son observes. Zaius, of course, will be out-of-town,
off chasing after the fugitive heretics and their astronaut friend... so
the son of Zaius will have an opportunity to seek after the truth
unimpeded by the presence of his father.
And, just as Ulysse Merou
hears a "mute" human TALK in Boulle's novel, so too will Zaius' son hear
LANDON speak again, his brain- damaged mind once more able to express
itself vocally due to electrical stimulation of his brain -- for although
Zaius had had Helius operate on Landon's BRAIN, he DID NOT have him cut
out his vocal cords, which enables Landon later to USE those speech organs
again, in extraordinary circumstances.
Landon will be coaxed into
describing the scene he witnessed with tongue-tied horror, as the gorilla
Hunt Leader berates Zaius for conspiring to cover-up this amazing "find"
(a talking human), just as he must have been covering up "heretical"
evidence all along... Landon will describe how Zaius then managed to
poison the gorilla, who KNEW he had been poisoned, too late to change the
outcome. Landon, then, will have been scared shitless, begging for his
life, promising never to utter a sound... with Zaius looking at him with
hatred and contempt prior to questioning him: "Are there others like
you?... How many?..." etc.
Zaius' son, then, will have the proof he
needs, even if it can't be used in court. At the very least, it is
something he can confront his father about: "Dad, there was a WITNESS to
your murder of the Hunt Leader... the talking human Taylor called
'Landon'... Before he died, he was able to describe the events leading up
to the time he was lobotomized. .." etc etc. "I know you're a
murderer, father."
And how could Zaius, then, respond to that? Zaius,
confronted by the ONLY ape who KNOWS that he was willing and able to kill
another ape (his own son) in order to preserve the Terrible Secret... how
can he justify his actions?
He doesn't need to. He still has his
own son's oath not to divulge the Secret, and just as Cornelius will have
no proof after the explosives destroy the evidence in the Cave, so too
will Zaius' son have no evidence of the murder of the Hunt Leader with
Landon dead. Only the fellow testimony of Doctor Helius, who -- although
willing to reveal to Zaius' son the truth that the brain-stimulation
experiment showed -- is still loyal to Zaius, having been willing,
before, to cut up Landon's brain in order to further the plot to
"expose" Zira and Cornelius at Taylor's "trial".
Helius isn't a fool.
He knows that with no admissible evidence to be used against Zaius, his
son won't be able to bring charges against him for murder. So, Helius
won't talk; and, if subpoena'd to appear before a Grand Jury, he tells
Zaius' son that he'd sooner LIE than lend his eyewitness testimony to
destroy Zaius. Those orangutans tend to stick together... Zaius' son being
perhaps the only honorable one around then, stymied against getting
justice for the murdered gorilla.
Thus, on his return from the
Forbidden Zone (after "PLANET" and before "BENEATH"), Zaius will have to
come to some kind of understanding with his son -- a son who detests him
for being a latter-day "Aldo", an ape who has killed another ape. All in
order to keep a Secret that he and their ancestral line considered too
dangerous for the masses to know.
One of the reasons Zaius will go
back into the Forbidden Zone, to accompany Ursus and his army, will be
because he knows that it's only a matter of time before his estranged son
blurts out the truth about his murdering father. Zaius, heartsick over
having had to do horrible things in order to keep the burdensome Secret,
won't want to go further with his threat against his son, a son he won't
be able to restrain much longer. Rather than face that music in Ape City
during Ursus' absence during the Invasion, Zaius elects to accompany him,
hoping (perhaps) to make a difference should the occasion
arise.
Doomsday was SUPPOSED to have arrived in "3950" (according to
the ancient scroll, which told how the "ghost" of Caesar's mother
revealed that date to him after he "descended into the Netherworld"
and acquired that Knowledge from his dead parents). Perhaps doomsday
had only been delayed half a decade, he muses. Zaius knew that a "ship
from outer space" -- from Earth's human-dominated Past -- would show up in
his time, because the "parent apes" of the Ape King CAESAR would fly in
that ship and go backwards through Time so as to give birth to their royal
heir at the dawn of simian civilization. When he eventually discovers that
Zira is pregnant with a child by her fiancee/husband Cornelius, Zaius
suspects that THEY must be the "parents apes" of Caesar... because it
would make perfect sense for Caesar to name his own son after his father:
CORNELIUS. The murdered child-heir to the simian throne.
"So...
think well before you act," Zaius admonishes Cornelius and Zira. He talks
of "the whole FUTURE of our civilization" which may be theirs to preserve
or destroy. What if he already knows, then, that their civilization' s
FUTURE actually lies at its BEGINNING?
Zira's pregnancy is the
penultimate tidbit of knowledge that will complete the circle for Zaius.
All that's left is the "bright white blinding light" that would be
witnessed from Space... the destruction of the planet of the apes. And,
when Zaius sees "the instrument of [the] God" of Mendez XXVI, is it any
wonder that he KNOWS that it is a "weapon built by Man" which "will
destroy us all"? How else could he KNOW this to be true? Has he ever seen
a missile before? Did he hear Mendez call it a "bomb"? NO, he didn't.
Zaius, when confronted with the mortally wounded Taylor near the
control panel dais of the Doomsday Bomb, has lived his entire life
keeping the Secret his distant ancestors had been keeping for well
over a thousand years. The REASON he's kept that Secret is due to an
ideological conviction that "Man is evil, capable of nothing but
destruction! " Rather than jump in front of Taylor and PREVENT him
from triggering the Bomb, Zaius just STANDS THERE... and LETS HIM
DETONATE IT.
Why???
Because, by allowing Taylor to destroy
the world, Zaius is being PROVED RIGHT about Man... AND, by allowing the
world to be destroyed, he is allowing that act to create the unique
circumstances which will allow a re-orbiting spaceship to be thrown into
the Timewarp which he knows MUST happen, to send the pregnant Zira back in
Time to 1973 so that she can give birth to the Ape King CAESAR... and
begin the history of Ape Civilization. Zaius knows that the Future of his
people lies in the distant Past. And only a time-warping spaceship can
get that to happen... and only the explosion of the Doomsday Bomb can
trigger that journey back to the Beginning.
Let's
bloody well hope so INDEED!
Michael of WTF
I rented from Netflix this DVD of an obscure
1967 Doris Day movie "Caprice." Why? Well, because it happens to
feature a rare appearance by Robert "Landon" Gunner, and has an even rarer
cameo by POTA director of photography Leon Shamroy, who was also the DP on
this picture. Amazingly Fox has provided a lot of extras with this movie
including a commentary track, where the Gunner POTA connection is mentioned,
AND more importantly a couple of those "Dick Strout Radio Interviews."
Both are listened to while you view a collection of stills and original ads
and poster images. Now, if Fox has these "radio interviews" from this
nearly forgotten movie, I'll bet they also have the ones for POTA '68
mentioned in the pressbook. Perhaps they'll show up in a future APES DVD
release? Well, let's bloody hope so!
In other news, both
"Fantastic Voyage" (1966) and the original "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"
(1961) movie will be re-released in special edition DVDs in June. Both
will have commentary tracks and new featurettes. Let's see if any "radio
interviews" pop up on them too. Both DVDs also feature original ad art
on their covers and these can be viewed on Amazon.com, if you care to look
them up.
I'm getting the strong feeling that next year will see a new
DVD special edition of at least PLANET! Let's bloody well hope
so!
At the end of "PLANET", Dr. Zaius tells Taylor: "All my life I've
awaited your coming, and dreaded it -- like Death itself!" Taylor
refers to him as the "Guardian of the Terrible Secret". The secret
Zaius kept had to have been told to him fairly soon after he became
enough of a responsible adult to have it entrusted to him -- he
says "ALL MY LIFE" after all. Who might have known the secret BEFORE
he learned it? Who entrusted him with that secret?
*** You as well as I know that the line Zaius says is in reference to having awaited the coming of an INTELLIGENT HUMAN, not Taylor... I'm sure there are many apes who "all their lives" feared an
intelligent human because they'd think he could turn their world upside down... And, the "Terrible Secret" in question is simply this: Man once dominated the world,and it was up to Zaius, as Minister of
Science (AND Chief Defender of the Faith) to make sure that secret remained just that, a secret... The secret was NOT that "someday a human named Taylor" will arrive here"...
PLANET was not written with a sequel in mind... It's not like Wilson sat there thinking "Hmmm, I need to be clever here and drop in a line that can be interpreted to say that Taylor's arrival was
known..." It was not intended in PLANET, and it's not even hinted at, no matter how subtly, in anything that came later...
