I think it was Kevin who mentioned Ploog (or someone at ComiCon) said POTA does not sell.

Do we think this is a correct analysis?

Why do we think this is so?

I was talking to one of the retailers at the Sideshow
booth and I asked him would it be possible to have a diorama made of
Taylor and Nova looking at the remains of the Statue of Liberty and he
told me that the Planet of the apes merchandise
wasn't selling like they wanted to. I said that I missed Ploog at the
con, it would have been nice to see a great artist like Ploog.
Maybe next year when I go to the 2008 Comic-con, I hope
to see him there.

When I telephoned Japan and spoke to the guy at MEDICOM I got the same impression.

I gave him suggestions about what the fans wanted to see and he replied “sure, YOU put up the money and see how you go!”

I think POTA leaves a bitter taste for most people trying to make money off it.

Certainly the action figures of late do now seem to have done well.  Then again, those SIDESHOWS are sure as hell PRICEY!

I disagree, and I think the numbers on

there has to be something to like.
Gone is the day of slapping the

I think the age of "Ape Fans" comes in to play a bit.

Obviously it's a bit of a generalisation but because most / majority are in their 40's I'd say a high percentage of these just don't have as much disposable income because of life's commitments , mortgage / house , kids, car , the joys of being an adult.

So as you say Neil they're very picky about what they'll buy and as Michael said the Sideshow figures were a bit on the pricey side (particularly the double packs and the specials)

(It would be interesting to see any figures on what the sales of their Ape line was compared to say their WW II range etc.)

Does Apes sell ?  may be , does Apes sell what a manufacturer thinks it will / should  ?

probably not .

Best, Graham.

I regretfully agree.  I mean people also went to see the BRADY BUNCH remake, but then seemed to realise they actually never LIKED it in the first place.

And how many people claim to be POTA fans but can’t even get the basics right?

I am afraid people might have seen the POTA logo and said yeah – I remember that show/movie etc” and for the sake of nostalgia, they have bought a comic or a movie ticket, but is there really a money spending fan base????

When I was at the Con in San Diego, I was wearing my Planet
of the Apes t-shirt with Zira on the front and I had several people
asked me about the shirt I was wearing. The problem with apes is that
the
business community doesn't see any money in it. I also see that these
so-called shirts like to see these fan clubs at these convention, I saw
the usual fan clubs at the convention(i.e Star Wars, Star Trek)
and other major fan clubs, I even saw smaller fan clubs at the con,
including a Battle of the Planet fan club who I talked to one of their
members and he told me that they have thousands of members
worldwide, but only 35 of 40 members show up.

Apes could sell, but in my opinion only if ape fans show up
in numbers. We should show up at these convention and show our love to
Apes, even if 10 people show up.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing a well made big screen adaptaion of the
Marvel "Terror on the Planet of the Apes" story.
New characters, lots of apes, something for old and young alike!!

Well, what was popular at the Con? Star Wars? Star Trek? Superheroes? Why do those sell? Maybe because those have had recent revivals. Even Star Wars, the prequels are considered crap but Lucas keeps the originals promoted. Star Trek was considered to have run it's course but Paramount is putting out an exciting new movie by a big player, J.J. Abrams (L. Nimoy said he's back because of Abrams and the script). And of course we know the studios are squeezing every last dime out of the superheroes, including Fox. When the "Hulk" didn't work they tried it again.
Meanwhile, most agree POTA2001 didn't work. That means we have to go back to POTA Old School, which is getting dusty to pop culture 40 years later. Unless something "new" happens that works, meaning a movie or TV show, not a comic, POTA will be a niche relegated to ebay. That's all there is to it. Why do you think Lucas is doing Star Wars TV shows even though the story is supposedly over? Out of sight, out of mind.   Jeff

I think it was Kevin who mentioned Ploog (or someone at ComiCon) said POTA does not sell.

Do we think this is a correct analysis?

Why do we think this is so?

Let's face it, Sideshow has quite a lineup. I think they have everything! Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Lord of the Rings...I can't blame them for making what sells.
Maybe POTA needs a company that's hungry, but it's only going to work if Fox gets behind it and they've got a full dance card too. It's funny how many people in the biz are Apes fans (the Sideshow folks, Todd McFarlane, off the top of my head) yet POTA can't get arrested. Fox has REALLY screwed things up.    Jeff

I wonder how Linda Harrison's business is doing selling autographs at conventions. She has the ear of Dick Zanuck, producer of POTA2001. Maybe she can tell him to get on the ball!

Why?  So, he can make another piece of crap about a concept he doesn't understand?  Give me a break.  Screw Zanuck.  He's the one responsible for blowing up the world at the end of BENEATH, then he helped destroy the concept with POTA2001.  Damn him all to hell!

Yeah Rory she should ask YOU to bankroll a new movie!

Seriously Rory, if they do a new movie (and they WILL!), what do you think the story should be?  Not just from and ape fan POV, but something people would come and pay to see…?

When I was at the Con in San Diego , I was wearing my Planet
of the Apes t-shirt with Zira on the front and I had several people
asked me about the shirt I was wearing. The problem with apes is that
the
business community doesn't see any money in it. I also see that these
so-called shirts like to see these fan clubs at these convention, I saw
the usual fan clubs at the convention(i. e Star Wars, Star Trek)
and other major fan clubs, I even saw smaller fan clubs at the con,
including a Battle of the Planet fan club who I talked to one of their
members and he told me that they have thousands of members
worldwide, but only 35 of 40 members show up.

Apes could sell, but in my opinion only if ape fans show up
in numbers. We should show up at these convention and show our love to
Apes, even if 10 people show up.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your enthusiastic plug!

Sadly, you are certainly NOT the last on the list to get these.  We printed very few, and barely cover printing and postage at the price we ask, but still very few people fork out money.  This contributes to my dismal view of whether people – even hard core fans – would really pay for quality.  The comics are available free on the web, so I guess that might have something to do with it, but it is very sad that we get such comics and can’t even shell out a few bucks to keep the best POTA comic artist working on them.

Never mind – at least a few of you supported the cause and we thank you.

Michael

Whatever you think of the new "King Kong", it didn't get the "hollywood treatment". That was all Mr. Jackson's doing; he wrote his own ticket. If anything he was guilty of loving the original TOO much and wanting to remake it all. I found the same flaw in the new "Superman". The directors loved their movies to death and they were too long and some of the silliness could've been cut (and they didn't do as well as their studios wanted). But they both also had great moments. The beauty of DVD is you can get to the good stuff.

Marvel "Terror on the Planet of the Apes" story.
New characters, lots of apes, something for old and young alike!!

Sadly, you are certainly NOT the last on the list to get these.  We printed very few, and barely cover printing and postage at the price we ask, but still very few people fork out money.  This contributes to my dismal view of whether people – even hard core fans – would really pay for quality.  The comics are available free on the web, so I guess that might have something to do with it,

Never mind – at least a few of you supported the cause and we thank you.

Now see . . . there's a great example.
After LOTR I thought Jackson would have been
a better choice for director for a POTA redo.
But, as we saw, it got the same Hollywood
treatment.  Big Budget FX and 2nd rate writing.
And he was also a supposed fan of the material.

I guess you would compare it to King Kong.

I’m fairly sure most people who saw this in the original theatrical release are dust by now.

But it has a great story and great FX for the time.

Same with POTA.

So I imagine there would still be fans Rory, don’t you think?

I don't think they will, so I have nothing to say.  Sorry.

I think we got like 3 orders and you just printed the 3 sets and sent these out to people direct.

I certainly don’t have more than 2 of some of the issues.

From (shabby!) memory, I think you sent a copy to everyone involved (and 2 to me – 1 of which I sent on to Neil) and we decided after having mllions of posters and other comics left over we’d get an order first then print them as required…?!?!

D'ough! The estimated take for "The Simpsons Movie" domestically is
$71.85 million, about $3 million more than POTA2001 made on this
weekend exactly 6 years ago. We'll see if it has the 'legs" POTA
didn't have. The Simpsons, like "Star Wars", is a Fox franchise that
Fox isn't allowed to tamper with. Fox isn't even allowed to "give
      notes" to the TV show.
      Jeff
      =================================================================

*** I went to see "The Simpsons Movie" and liked it, but didn't love
it. It was generally funny, but I've seen episodes of the show that
had more laffs in it than were in this movie (remember the episode
about the Monorail -- written by Conan O'Brien before he got the gig
      to host LATE NITE...?).

Still, it was nice to see it on the big screen. But they missed a few
glorious opportunities. The plot of the film involves the head of the
EPA getting President Schwarzenegger (!) to approve a plan to seal
the polluted town of Springfield under a gigantic geodesic dome, to
prevent it from polluting the rest of the country. I can't BELIEVE
that they set up this scenario and FAILED to make even a passing
reference to "LOGAN'S RUN"! C'mon... a dome-enclosed city? How can
they NOT have made even a single joke about this? When the angry mob
of Springfieldians is chasing after Homer and his family, they
could've had at least one of the mob yelling after them, "Run,
runner!" or something like that. Just one lil' in-joke, that's all I
was askin' for... and it's as if it didn't even occur to them to make
      it.

Regardless, it was a fairly entertaining flick, and I'd give it about
***/*****. The "SOUTH PARK" movie was definitely funnier, though.
And, maybe because SOUTH PARK tends to have a raunchier brand of
comedy, I tend to laugh more at episodes of SOUTH PARK than of the
      SIMPSONS.

      Subject: Re: Calendar musings
      .html

Not that anybody's interested, but in my next-to-last post -- about my hypothetical Ape lunisolar calendar -- I made a mistake. I transposed the number "6939 " to the (incorrect) "3969" (in the second paragraph below):

The calendar I've devised, then, takes the 19-year Cycle of 6939.6882821 days and rounds it to 6939 days 16 hours exactly = 6939.666666... so that 3 Cycles = 57 years = 20,819 days.

The 3-Cycle system has 6940 + 3969 + 6940 days, in a repeating cycle. Like the Jewish Calendar, this Ape Calendar adds a 13th month in Years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 [of the 19-year Cycle]. But, to synchronize the lunar phases, the lengths of the months in each of those 19 years will require a certain unavoidable amount of complication.

This last paragraph should read: "The 3-Cycle system has 6940 + 6939 + 6940 days, in a repeating cycle..." so that the grand total of those 3 Cycles (or, 3 x 19 = 57 years) equals 20,819 days.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming...

When I was at the Con in San Diego, I was wearing my Planet
of the Apes t-shirt with Zira on the front and I had several people
asked me about the shirt I was wearing. The problem with apes is that
      the
business community doesn't see any money in it. I also see that these
so-called shirts like to see these fan clubs at these convention, I saw
the usual fan clubs at the convention(i. e Star Wars, Star Trek)
and other major fan clubs, I even saw smaller fan clubs at the con,
including a Battle of the Planet fan club who I talked to one of their
members and he told me that they have thousands of members
worldwide, but only 35 of 40 members show up.

Apes could sell, but in my opinion only if ape fans show up
in numbers. We should show up at these convention and show our love to
Apes, even if 10 people show up.

Same here. It was fun at the until my neighbor complained that it was a bit long and ridiculous. One thing about Kong was that its post moderism far more understood and one than that of POTA2001. It wasn't force fed as was Burtons. Jackson, to me, is far superior in making apes movies than Burton. Burton is good, but apes are not his forte'.

Not true. I've read a lot of sci fi (simian fic) that stands on its own merits based on a steady diet imagination. Sure POTA is king when it comes to talking apes. However, apes are ape as are aliens or elves or fairys etc., etc., etc..

Not that anybody's interested, but in my next-to-last post -- about my hypothetical Ape lunisolar calendar -- I made a mistake. I transposed the number "6939" to the (incorrect) "3969" (in the second paragraph below):

The calendar I've devised, then, takes the 19-year Cycle of 6939.6882821 days and rounds it to 6939 days 16 hours exactly = 6939.666666. .. so that 3 Cycles = 57 years = 20,819 days.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming. ..

Not true. I've read a lot of sci fi (simian fic) that stands on its own merits based on a steady diet imagination. Sure POTA is king when it comes to talking apes. However, apes are ape as are aliens or elves or fairys etc., etc., etc..

Regardless, it was a fairly entertaining flick, and I'd give it about
***/*****. The " SOUTH PARK " movie was definitely funnier, though.
And, maybe because SOUTH PARK tends to have a raunchier brand of
comedy, I tend to laugh more at episodes of SOUTH PARK than of the
        SIMPSONS.
