Don't pay for Head, my man.... look for it for free elsewhere...
But as far as the APES movies are concerned, you should upgrade your Evolution set with the Legacy set.... Why? Because I said so, dummy! The films are all remastered with better picture and stereo, although
you may think BENEATH looks too bright in some parts. Also, buy the cartoon series separately. The ones in the Head set suck!

Okay, here's a new one.
Do they take PayPal?
I am sure they do not: Only check/money orders. (They donate proceeds to the 9/11 funds in NYC.)

I was going through some old pictures the other day, (from the real film
days!) and I found this picture that I took back in 1992 at the Wax Museum
here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Sorry it isn't very clear. They made
their beards really long! I'm not sure if they meant this to be Cornelius
and Zira, but it doesn't really look like them very much. Anyway, for
what's it's worth... you may upload if you wish.

Yes, 'Variety' says "Matrix" Boy Keanu
Reeves will play Klaatu in Fox's remake of their classic sci-fi "The Day The

what part Will Smith will play. Klaatu barada nikto! Jeff

Hi Bill
Point taken, but If there’s someone
in this group who hasn’t posted for a year, then I don’t want that
person in this group. And if someone gets bumped and they want to rejoin
they just have to say so.
There are other groups that will tolerate people
joining and not contributing, and there’s one that even creates them falsely
to boost their numbers.
I don’t care if people just chime in
to say that they are not chiming in – as long as they chime in.
This is a discussion group and discussion
requires input. We could rename it the POTA Gallery (ie where people
watch others discuss) but that’s not what I want to achieve.
I’m also concerned about the genuinity
of members. We are going to be a bit more pedantic about people
identifying themselves in some way to become a member.
Thanks for the input Bill.

Hi Graham
You were not “culled”.
How funny is it though – the group
has halved in size and nobody has noticed (or at least none of the 75 “people”
I did cull have commented!).
Some of the names I looked at are people
who have excessively contributed in the past – enough to balance out any
current lull – so they escaped the cull too (you know who you are!) J
I have a new email address – I’ll
send you an email now so you can reach me.

Just want to work something out here….
Tim, you say you cross-post because you don’t
want anyone to miss anything. I understand this and I even go so far as
to say I support it (I know Neil disagrees with me but we respect each other
enough to disagree and stay friends).
But I must ask - Do you cross-post RESPONSES or just
the opening to a thread?
I hope you won’t think I’m being a
smart-ass here because I am really just asking a valid and important (to me)
question.
I’m all for unity (even if some poor
individuals just want to be King of POTA!), but I would like something that’s
effective. If the responses are not also cross-posted, then people miss
the responses. Sure – they get a chance to comment and that’s
great. But they don’t get to see what some fans say and that’s
what I think is important – to get as many different views as we can.
I’d love to hear what people have to say on
this, but I get the feeling there’s a few people sulking who won’t
respond. That’s OK – I sulk sometimes too….and Neil’s
worse than anyone! J
But it doesn’t really ever fix anything does it?

I think it’s because the franchise
is dead.
Back in the day, when we discovered POTA
we would soon discover there is more! More movies, merchandise, a
cartoon, TV Series….
Now if someone discovers POTA there’s
just a whole bunch of old stuff.
People want to have others around them who
are also interested.
But I do get the feeling that we few were
always kinda lonely in our fandom. I know I was 30 before I discovered
another POTA fan, and I seem to recall everyone in the group saying they had
the same experience. So I wonder if there were ever more than a few
hard-core fans?
Dunno.

Subject: [PotaDG] Fan Presence at
Conventions
In my
opinion the problem why "Planet of the Apes" is not
attracting newer, younger fans is that when you go to any conventions
anywhere in the world
you see many fan clubs there. Fan clubs like "Star Trek", "Star
Wars",
"Farscape", any "Stargate" club and even smaller and vocal
clubs
attends these functions, I
even saw a " Battle
of the Planet" group there. Also these groups have
made and even posted many fan films on the internet for everyone to
see. They also have
fan magazine which fan can subscribe to and non can do the same.
When I went to comic-con last month, I wore my Planet of the
Apes t-shirts on Friday and Saturday, I had some people comment on my
shirt including the
two vendors on Saturday, they told me that they were apes fans.
I think if there was a "Planet of the Apes" presence at these
conventions (i.e table or a booth) like some of the other fan clubs
"Star Trek", "Star Wars"
when I saw the 501st Legion had a table there looking for new
recruits. In my opinion, maybe "Planet of the Apes" fans should show
up these conventions
( New York , Los Angeles ,
Chicago , and
San Diego ) and maybe setting up a
table and putting the light on "Planet of the Apes" so we can get
newer
fans to enjoy
apes.
This is my opinion, I would like to hear your comments on this
idea.
Thank You
Kevin

It makes me think about something.
I have always felt quite restricted in my
imagination whilst reading Monkey Planet because my mind has a POTA “pre-conceived”
image of many of the characters.
I’m not too sure if I’d like
seeing Monkey Planet done with apes that look like apes.
How does everyone else feel about this?
While I am biased, I really prefer my apes
to have human qualities.

Yeah, have to agree with this Michael, I've always "seen" the characters from Monkey Planet through the "lens" of POTA, even when I try not to. >

I’d like to see it for the sake of
curiosity, but it really covers me in a fear that it might cheapen things to
the status of “talking monkeys”.
Like Lancelot Link which was very
entertaining, but in small doses.
And the lips would have to be perfectly
synched….I think….

POTA if the apes in Monkey Planet had a completely different look.
For example, in the Hungarian comic, where the chimps are half the
size of the gorillas, it gives another dynamic to how those species
might relate to each other. And that's probably how Boulle pictured
it when he was writing.
Secondly, I wonder if it's more comforting for us to
see 'intelligent' apes closely resembling humans. In POTA (both
versions) the apes are the same size as humans and inevitably look
more like ape/human hybrids than apes. If they really looked like
apes it could be all the more creepy. Wasn't there something in
Gulliver's Travels about visiting a land of intelligent horses?

new Apes movie or television show haven't been made is that Fox will
only pay
attention to active fan clubs at these conventions. I still think that
there many apes fans that are out there but there is not a official fan
club with a
official magazine for them to join. For the apes franchise to get back
to be a fan favorite is for apes to have a major overhaul, like they
did with these
old movie serials like Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers, and like they did
with Battlestar Galactica, Batman and what they're doing with the Hulk.
Ape fans in my opinion must show at some of these major conventions
like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and other cities where these
conventions
are located.
An official fan club is vital for the future survival of the Planet of
the Apes franchise.

Back in the day, when we discovered POTA

Now if someone discovers POTA there's
just a whole bunch of old stuff.
People want to have others around them who

Conventions
In my
opinion the problem why "Planet of the Apes" is not
attracting newer, younger fans is that when you go to any conventions
anywhere in the world
you see many fan clubs there. Fan clubs like "Star Trek", "Star
Wars",
"Farscape", any "Stargate" club and even smaller and vocal
clubs
attends these functions, I
even saw a "Battle
of the Planet" group there.

For various personal reasons, not a lot really... I'm in the middle
of an Urko painting at the moment which I started last week(need to varnish this today so I can start the next stage) I had been doing a fair bit of black and white sketch book stuff,
trying to come up with a quick sketchy/rough look, not keen on the results. So as I say not a lot... you know what it's like far too much cricket
this summer...I mean England / India one day match starts in a few hours
Oh I did start a test painting on Neil's pencils that'll have to get back to ...when I figure out what to do on it next !!!

I think the thing with an animated series is that it'ld boil down to the script (Doesn't it always !!!)
No matter how "good looking " a series would/could be if the scripts were not up too scratch...
Marvels' been releasing these direct to DVD animated "Films" Ultimate Avengers, Iron man, Doc Strange which look ok (Not great but, they're keeping the cost down)
The couple I watched (Well one, I fast forward through the second !!)
just didn't seem to have much more going for them than a 70's saturday morning cartoon when it came to the script.
A lot of time seemed to have been taken on the "style" of the shows but the "content" was lacking.
I wonder if an animated Ape show would repeat the same mistake...I lot of animation (American, anyway) seems to fall in to this trap.
all sizzle and no steak...
Best, Graham.

I do not

new Apes movie or television show haven't been made is that Fox will
only pay
attention to active fan clubs at these conventions.

An official fan club is vital for the future survival of the Planet of

Back in the day, when we discovered POTA

Now if someone discovers POTA there’s
just a whole bunch of old stuff.
People want to have others around them who

even saw a " Battle

made and even posted many fan films on the internet for everyone to
see. They also have
fan magazine which fan can subscribe to and non can do the same.
When I went to comic-con last month, I wore my Planet of the

several of them worldwide. Star Wars also have several major fan clubs
worldwide also.
The 501 Legion (aka Vader's Fist) was in the Tournament of Roses Parade
and is seen at many conventions, the same could be said for other clubs.
The fact is that there are fans who do fan videos, comic web pages that
fans look at, they also write short stories about their favorite movie
or
telvision series.
Maybe if there was a "Official Planet of the Apes" fan club and if
fans who love the movie show up at these major (or smaller) conventions
and show the
same dedication like the fan clubs of Star Trek, Star Wars, Farscape,
Battlestar Galactica and many other fan clubs, apes can be up there
with the rest of these
fan clubs.

The StarTrek fan club, as far as I know, is run by Titan Magazines, they also run the official Starwars fan club for which they publish Starwars insider.
Quite handy to run a fan club with 1000s of "built in" subscibers to the magazines you publish.
They also seem to sell a lot of stuff, producing catalogues etc for the club.
(The centre pages of the star Wars insider used to have lots of mail order goods available, although I don't think there's that section now.)
Titan publishing has had a long association with the Forbidden Planet London chain of shops.

Well I think the point is that there is a large commercial interest for Titan to run both magazines/ fan clubs each scratching each others back if you see what I mean.
I don't think Titan would run the clubs if they didn't benefit commercialy.

-- 1,000's of POTA
fans?! I don't think so, especially hardcore ones. Just for a rough guide add up
the members of the active Yahoo groups and see what sort of numbers you
get. Then don't forget to take away the large number of fake
members that have been created for at least one of the groups to keep it on
top of the Yahoo POTA searches and also remove the number of non
contributing members who join these groups just for the heck of it or because it
seemed cool at the time because they remember liking the movies back in the
1970's but then realise they are not that passionate about Apes anymore. Go
through the groups and add up the number of members who regularly post - the
number is incredibly tiny.
The problem is
that I truly believe the 'Apes fans' just aren't out there any more
aside from us lot! It would be nice to get some figures on the sales of some
recent Apes stuff such as the Revolution comics, that way we would get some sort
of idea of the true size of the fan base.
Neil
And we can't get Titan Magazines to help us in getting the Planet of
the Apes fan club and magazine started. I think the only reason that ape
fans are relucant in having an official fan club is the membership fee. If
these clubs have 1000's of subscribers to help in their magazines, POTA
fans can do the same thing. Are there companies that sell POTA
merchandise out there, Apemania is one of those companies out
there.
Look, it wouldn't hurt to ask them how we can get POTA
started as an official fan club. That's all i'm saying.

Here's some sales figures on the last issue of Revolution.

If Tron comics out sold Apes then that speaks volumes I think. Another thing you
would have to take in to consideration as well is that not all the sales of
Revolution would have been to Apes fans, I would speculate that there would also
be fans of Ty Templeton, Tom Fowler, Joe O'Brien etc. who would have brought
issues whether they were Apes fans or not.

Here's the chart.
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/8714.html"
As you can see it was Revolution #3 which came in at 241 selling 3061 copies but Tron #1 sold 8688 coming in at 168 on the chart.
Looking at the chart for Dec'2005 Revolution #1 sold 4458 copies.
As you say Neil , it's not just the numbers, comic sales figures are always open to interpretation it's the other titles that out sold it that, sadly , puts Apes into some kind of context.

Maybe if there was a "Official Planet of the Apes" fan club and if fans
who love the movie show up at these major (or smaller) conventions and
show the same dedication like the fan clubs of Star Trek, Star Wars,
Farscape, Battlestar Galactica and many other fan clubs, apes can be up

I warn
you that it's long! If you don't know anything about Star Trek or don't
like it, you'll probably want to just skip this.
I'm not that big on Trek (I have a phaser and the Q DVDs, but I haven't
watched
them. Maybe you can hip me to your faves.) But I've been DVRing the
original
series. I get nostalgic for they way Star Trek used to look.
They were'nt afraid
to splash a lot of color on your screen back then. I miss that.
I was watching
A Rose By Any Other Name last night and I just love when they fly through
the
barrier. I also like the closing credits when they show that and other
cool scenes.
