www.aintitcool. com says Warner Bros.
is moving ahead with their remake of "Logan's Run". What's interesting is
they've got the writer of the solid sci-fi flick "Children of Men" and a
first-time director, Joseph Kosinski. Fans have been saying Fox should hand
off POTA to some visionary fresh talent. Once again if an expensive but
literate science fiction movie can break out and be a hit (as opposed to the
"Independence Day" crap) the studios might get a clue.

Recently Neil mentioned the new HD formats. You might
have heard there's a big "format war" between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray and
the idea of studios going "exclusive" to one format or the other.
Yesterday Paramount
and Dreamworks announced they were going to release their movies exclusively on
HD-DVD, including hits like "Transformers" and "Shrek the
Third". Those studios got paid a reported combined $150 million from HD-
DVD owner Microsoft for their allegiance plus promotional incentives. Fox and
MGM responded by saying their summer hits will be exclusive to Blu-Ray.
The bottom line is this short-term greed is killing a
promising new format. The filmmakers are speaking out. Spielberg, who does what
he wants, prefers Blu-ray so some of Paramount 's
thunder was stolen by the fact that their "Indiana Jones" flicks will
have to appear on Blu-Ray too. And now Michael
Bay says he won't do
"Transformers 2" for Paramount
because he doesn't want part of his audience denied his movies.
So that's the current big movie controversy. Any thoughts?

As some of our DG members are not members of the POTA
yahoo group I thought I would forward this bit of info for them as we don't get
announcements these days about what is added to Hunter's site:
"Thanks to Lance Brick, instructions
and image files to let you create
an awesome paper model of ICARUS (the PotA spacecraft) have been added
to my PotA site."
https://pota. goatley.com/
I wouldn't want any of our members to miss out just because
Hunter is not a member of this group anymore and we otherwise wouldn't know
about this new stuff.

Actually now might be time to wind up the DG. A lot of the posts these days
seem to be cross posted between both groups plus we always seem to end up
talking about the same things (which mostly seem to be things that we have
discussed to death over the years anyway!)
I know I am
finding it very difficult to contribute much these days and if something
new and interesting is ever brought up it very rarely seems to garner much
in the way of interest or responses, so really what's the point in carrying
on?

I believe for the time being, that regular
dvd's will continue to be made, since most households have standard dvd players.
However, as HD becomes more and more popular, one may be forced to own either a
machine that supports both formats, or two machines, one of each format.

Recently Neil mentioned the
new HD formats. You might have heard there's a big "format war" between HD-DVD
and Blu-Ray and the idea of studios going "exclusive" to one format or the
other. Yesterday Paramount and Dreamworks announced they
were going to release their movies exclusively on HD-DVD, including hits like
"Transformers" and "Shrek the Third". Those studios got paid a reported
combined $150 million from HD- DVD owner Microsoft for their allegiance plus
promotional incentives. Fox and MGM responded by saying their summer hits will
be exclusive to Blu-Ray.
The bottom line is this
short-term greed is killing a promising new format. The filmmakers are
speaking out. Spielberg, who does what he wants, prefers Blu-ray so some of
Paramount 's thunder was stolen by the fact that their
"Indiana Jones" flicks will have to appear on Blu-Ray too. And now
Michael Bay says he won't do "Transformers 2" for
Paramount because he doesn't want part of his audience
denied his movies.
So that's the current big movie controversy.
Any thoughts?

director, Joseph Kosinski. Fans have been saying Fox should hand off POTA to some visionary fresh talent. Once again if an expensive but literate science fiction movie can break out and be a hit (as opposed to the
"Independence Day" crap) the studios might get a clue.
An expensive but literate science fiction film?!!!!
I fear "Hollywood" has forgotten how to even try to make them. I doubt this new LOGAN'S RUN will be that good. For one, the story is now dated!

I'm not sure, but I think it had something to do with the turmoil at the studio at the time. The costs of bombs like DOCTOR DOLITTLE and STAR!, the studio not being able to release HELLO DOLLY until it finished
its Broadway run, and then the amount of money being spent on PATTON (which would be a hit) and especially TORA! TORA! TORA! (which would bomb), caused the Fox Board of Directors in New York to demand that Richard
Zanuck be fired in 1971, which his father Darryl F. then did! I think this led the "Dickster" to decide it was best to "save" BENEATH until the summer of 1970, which turned out to be a good
idea as the movie made almost as much as the original and, because of its lower budget, was actually a more profitable picture than PLANET.

Subject: Re: [PotaDG] OT: HD-DVD
heats up
I believe for the time being, that
regular dvd's will continue to be made, since most households have
standard dvd players. However, as HD becomes more and more popular, one
may be forced to own either a machine that supports both formats, or two
machines, one of each format. Personally, I do not own HD in any
form what so ever. I was one of the original Beta owners, I still
have 3 working Beta machines, but they only collect dust these days. I
still have some VHS as well, but most are or have been converted to DVD.
The ones I purchased as originals cannot be converted to DVD so they sit
on a shelf gathering dust, while I watch my dvd's. You can see from my
history, I have been involved, as most of us my age have, with most
every format that has come along. I even had 8mm laserdisc at
one point. I have Star Wars in every format and every time it
cost me a minimum of $30 - $40. I believe that HD is a stepping stone as
have been other formats. And, that soon, something bigger, clearer,
and better will be on the horizon. But, not until they milk
the market for HD, and Blueray. Just my humble opinion.

This is sad
these greedy bastards have enough money to make without us having
another Beta/VHS scenario.
Michael
Recently Neil
mentioned the new HD formats. You might have heard there's a big
"format war" between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray and the idea of studios going
"exclusive" to one format or the other. Yesterday
Paramount and Dreamworks announced they were
going to release their movies exclusively on HD-DVD, including hits
like "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third". Those studios got paid a
reported combined $150 million from HD- DVD owner Microsoft for their
allegiance plus promotional incentives. Fox and MGM responded by
saying their summer hits will be exclusive to Blu-Ray.
The bottom line is
this short-term greed is killing a promising new format. The
filmmakers are speaking out. Spielberg, who does what he wants,
prefers Blu-ray so some of Paramount 's thunder
was stolen by the fact that their "Indiana Jones" flicks will have to
appear on Blu-Ray too. And now Michael Bay says
he won't do "Transformers 2" for Paramount
because he doesn't want part of his audience denied his movies.
So that's the current big movie
controversy. Any thoughts?

I’m all for cross posting.
However I refuse to join that other group
because James blocks everything I say.
That’s the reason he stopped cross
posting – because people could see when they are being moderated when
their DG post comes through straight away and the other takes a few days! J

Yeah – that’s the thing Neil.
There may be people being bullied around
over there still (as James has tried it on a few) who need the refuge of the
DG.
It is frustrating that a few try-hards
over there keep stealing our threads, old and new, but it’s still worth
continuing if you ask me.
And look at the stats – if the aim
of a chat group is to chat, then (if you want to be competitive) the DG has met
this aim since conception.

This is my advice to everyone -- keep enjoying your standard DVDs and don't even think about buying a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player until 2009 at least. Not only will it be more apparent which format to buy, but the
price of the players will drop, as will the prices of the 1080p displays you will need to properly see them!

This is my advice to everyone -- keep enjoying your standard DVDs and don't
even think about buying a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player until 2009 at least.
Not only will it be more apparent which format to buy, but the price of the
players will drop, as will the prices of the 1080p displays you will need to

Didn’t mean to offend you Tim.
Others maybe, but not you! J
My tongue is firmly implanted in my cheek
(like those crazy artists who put poo on a canvas to get a reaction!), but I am
making a point. Sure – I’m more than happy you are interested
but with all due respect I don’t know who Jacqueline Scott is. Maybe
I’ll read the interview and be enlightened and maybe she’ll have
plenty of interesting POTA stuff to tell and I sure hope so. But if she gives
one or 2 lines on POTA then spouts on for pages about everything BUT, then it’s
my opinion that her contribution is less than I would expect from a decent
fanzine people pay for. Speaking of BASHING – some pf those
ADVENTURE COMICS people in a previous issue of SCROLL were bashing
POTA!!! That’s actually what I’m offended by. Again I
am sorry if that offends you Tim because I like you and I appreciate your
presence and your contributions.
Anyway one point I was trying to make is
that we could surely do better, and as a group target specific players (maybe
Jacqeline Scott included!) with specific questions. The other point is
that no, we can’t do much better because all the big guns with the really
important answers (IMH?O) are dead.
Plenty to discuss here!

I was going through some old pictures the other day, (from the real film
days!) and I found this picture that I took back in 1992 at the Wax Museum
here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Sorry it isn't very clear. They made
their beards really long! I'm not sure if they meant this to be Cornelius
and Zira, but it doesn't really look like them very much. Anyway, for
what's it's worth... you may upload if you wish.

Hi Melinda
Thanks for sharing this.
I think they actually tried NOT to make it
look like Z&C due to copyright. The glyphs are all wrong too and I
know wax dummy artists try to get things as close to real as they can –
unless they are trying to avoid paying for copyright.
This is fun to see though – thanks!

Dunno.
I know Helen did and she ended up losing a
lot of money because her bank wanted her to register as a business so she lost
all that money (about $40 - $60).
This is really a question for the “other”
group.

Really good question. I have the evolution pack in my room and
was thinking of buying the set with the ape head. I really don't want to part
with all that money if it's the same thing I all ready have in different sets so
I keep thinking of just buying the legacy set for my game room area.
