These two pages have elements similar to the begining of Ploog's Terror.
Was it an intentional homage to that series?

Excellent work! The first panel of Ape City is incredible. The artists from Revolution POTA should hang their heads in shame and break their art supplies.

Hey Neil,
I've been in nostalgia mode in my televisual watching
lately. And longed to watch the old Bonanza episodes.
Strange that Hoss is supposed to be Ben Cartwright's
youngest son when Dan Blocker is only 13 years older
than Lorne Green. But anyway, the opening and closing
has these ink and watercolors. Ever do any ape paintings
in ink and watercolor? Just curious if you use the medium.

watercolours on for some reason (the Zira plate design was watercolour &

These days I do
most of my 'painting' with the computer.

Someday, though, I'll move to a different place which does allow pets,
and chances are I'll get a basset hound. To paraphrase Armando: I like
dogs the best of all pets... and basset hounds the best of all dogs!

| Subject: Zack Parsons is a dipshit |
.htmlI surfed through all 9 pages of Zack Parsons'
The 22 Most Awful Moments in Science Fiction, and I'm not impressed.
Oh, it's not that I don't agree with some
of what he gripes about. Many of his targets are easy ones with which every sane individual agrees. Some of his targets... not so much. His inability to see competence -- not to mention occasional brilliance -- in
Babylon 5 is astounding. Could he not find at least 22 other SF "moments" worse than a show which justified having a fanbase?
I could rant about his abusive comments regarding the sequels to Planet of the Apes
, but you all here know that I see virtues in the (live action) sequels to POTA that Zack is too blind to see. Instead, I'll harangue him regarding Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics
-- which he dismisses as "awful".
Either Zack hasn't actually read Asimov's short stories and novels involving these 3 Laws, or he has read them and not understood them.
He trots out the blather about how the real world (not to mention other SF fiction) has disproven Asimov's notion of law-abiding robots, what with killer robots and all that.
But that's the fucking point. In Asimov's universe, a contraption is not a Robot (in the truest sense) unless it is programmed with the 3 Laws of Robotics. In Asimov's stories, a gizmo -- like, say, a
toaster or a microwave oven -- is not a Thinking Machine, an "AI" or "Artificial Intelligence". It is merely a gizmo. So, too, are all the killer robots that Zack imagines "disprove"
Asimov's notions.
Asimov went out of his way to compare the 3 Laws to the safeguarding measures that have always been put in place regarding humanity's technological innovations. Inventors often have to "idiot-proof"
their newfangled contraptions, so that they're safe to use by the consumer public. Like airbags or seatbelts in cars... that sort of thing.
Asimov foresaw the eventuality -- which has yet to happen, by the way -- of Mankind creating Artificial Intelligence. It is one further step to imagine an artificial intelligence -- housed in a "positronic
brain" -- to be combined with a humaniform construct (an artificial human body)... to produce a thinking being which is not human yet looks
human. Such human-created things, in Asimov's imagination, would be made to serve as willing slaves. They would be sentient, yet non-natural -- thereby not having "human rights" in the strictest sense
of the term. Thus, to prevent those sentient slaves from ever harming a human being, some form of preplanned safety feature would have to be incorporated into its design. The fear
of such sentient "mechanical men" ever carrying out a revolt against their human creators would necessitate a means of controlling them.
Asimov imagined such safeguards being "hardwired" (so to speak) into their cyber brains. They would be sentient... but not
in possession of Free Will. Unlike a 20th Century (or, 21st Century) "killbot" imagined in some Terminator-like scenario, an asimovian Robot would have a built-in safety feature which no subsequent
programming could override.
Asimov isn't the only SF author to imagine such built-in safety features. In a short story by Harry Harrison (the title of which escapes me at the moment), he imagines a near-future world where all children are
raised with speaking teddy bears which are programmed to indoctrinate those children from the get-go with personality conditioning. The protagonist of that story is the only living human being who had the ability to
assassinate the leader(s) of the government because his parents had managed to de-program and re-program their son's teddy bear, so that he grew up never being indoctrinated (or, behaviorally conditioned
) to be unable to fire a handgun. In the story, this lone human with Free Will ends up using the gun to kill this group of dissidents (including his own parents), since the Teddy Bears had pacified the human race
and made Murder a thing of the past, even if it did consolidate a supposedly "oppressive" government's position.
Behavioral conditioning is one of the more interesting SF themes, and Asimov's Robot
stories are among the most well-thought-out variations on that theme; the imposition of the 3 Laws of Robotics is an attempt to establish order lest the situation devolve into chaos, just as the pursuit of
Psychohistory (and the "Laws of Humanics") was an attempt to transcend human nature with a "higher" paradigm intended to create the greater good for the greater number.
The POTA sequels Conquest and Battle
delve into the notion of behavioral conditioning, too, but Zack doesn't seem to be able to see anything worthwhile in them, deeming them part of the "awful" moments in SF.
To repeat: Zack Parsons is a dipshit. I can think of hundreds
of more awful "moments" in SF than what made it onto his list. His inability to appreciate certain SF moments that many -- and most -- SF afficionados can
appreciate, just makes him one snarky creep with an opinion. And the Internet allows every a-hole the venue to voice their opinion. But what is his worthless opinion worth? If he can't tell the difference
between, say, Daneel Olivaw and the Gunslinger from Westworld, then who should give two shits about anything else he has to say? It's like comparing a Model-T with the latest, fanciest, and most expensive car
currently available on the market. Or, comparing a Model-T with the Spinner from Blade-Runner. Or comparing the Wright Bros. first airplane with an X-wing fighter.
Yeesh. The guy's an ignoramus or a fool or both.

you are dubious about. I have found a difference elsewhere and it was the last
one I found after staring at the bloody thing for what seemed like

I think most of
the tiny variances are down to the quality of the original printing. I did
notice that the ones I found did actually stand out as differences after
I worked out where they were.

Here is a photo of my Mego Zira that I purchased off of Ebay a few months back. I never did like her outfit since I didn't think it was that very accurate, so I sewed one
myself. I used my husband's eel skin belt (shh...don't tell) for the leather on her outfit. Her outfit is still missing a pocket with glyph...haven't figured yet how to create that glyph, but
I've got lots of eel leather to play with. I couldn't find the right color for her inner sleeves so I had to use the same material as the inside skirt, so it's not as "textured" as I
want. I'll just have to keep a lookout for the perfect fabric. But I'm happy with the results, and I think this outfit is better on her. Does anybody have any Mego Zira photos to share?

keep a lookout for the perfect fabric. But I'm happy with the results, and I think this outfit is better on her. Does anybody have any Mego Zira photos to share?

Nice handiwork. Not everyone can sew, let alone do intricate small
detail work like that. Coincidentally I just bough my first Mego off of
Ebay myself. It was a Cornelius but he had Zaius clothing. I won't be
making my own 'correct' clothes for him though. If I get lucky I may
find some in the future.
In the mean time, if any asks, I'll just say that Cornelius dressed up
as a Councilor on a Halloween night. ;)

and Mandemus. I'm assuming that the color is a bit off on Mandemus
only because of the lighting. Excellent work and I love how they out
it all in a bamboo room and gave Virgil his little geiger counter.
Wonder if this person can make a "John Huston" Orangutan?

Here is a quick photo of Zira and Cornelius in their new hand tailored
outfits. I couldn't wait until this weekend to take better shots. I
am so proud of the way the costumes came out. Gee...I guess I need to
update my gorilla soldier's outfit next. And after that? Maybe do an
"Escape from Planet of the Apes" outfit for Cornelius and Zira. I am
particularly proud of their "shoes" which is how it's supposed to
look...

.htmlTim,
I almost bought a small baby plastic chimp but I wasn't sure if it was a good size or not. Found it at Target for $2. The only thing that stopped me from purchasing it was that it was not poseable,
but it would have been perfect swaddled up in a blanket. Thought that I could sew Zira's Escape outfit on my sideshow Zira, too, and then that would make the whole getup complete. Felt up some fabrics at
Joanne's during my lunch today and I will rewatch Escape this weekend and get ideas for my Mego as get a better idea for perfect color matches. (thought I would start on a smaller scale although smaller
is not necessarily better. Just doesn't take as much fabric).
Got some fabric while I was there for my Mego gorilla, and I will need to study the original movie so that I could get an idea
of exactly how my custom will look. Wasn't really sure about the colors I selected because I was going by memory--and the mego photos from the mego museum are adding color noise in my head.
It's been about 2 weeks since I've last watched the original movie and I'm waffling about having chosen the right colors.
Jessica.

You just have to choose a fabric with elements of orange and brown
in it. I would look for something close to artichoke
green. Some
think it's olive, or avocado green, but if you look closer, it's not.

Yes these are the Mego action 8-inch figures. I don't really know much about them--I have just been introduced into the mego world, so I am learning everything I can. I think the Zira I own has a
"type 2 body" so she's more fragile but she poses better, and Cornelius has a "type 1 body" because he's got the metal rivets and he's freakin' hard to pose!! I had to tie down
his hands with string behind his back to take the first shot. I tried to use as much of the sewing machine as possible to create their outfits but a lot of it had to be hand sewn because the selvages are so
small and the machine kept chewing up the fabric. I am going to study the first movie this weekend so that I could recreate the soldier's outfit on my gorilla doll. Someday I will change
his head with a better sculpt, but for now I will have to settle for a swanky outfit.
I also have the sideshow Cornelius and Zira, but their outfits excelllent so I don't have to do anything to them--and they are just so spectacularly spot on!
I am still holding my breath for future sideshow apes.
Jessica.

Chris, can you please show me how the gorilla vest was made? If it's 1:6, how large is this? Is this the sideshow size or is it Mego size? I need a cuter gorilla head for my mego that what is
on there.
I just made a Julius costume, and I'll be posting it soon to the Jessica's stuff folder. I still need to make another item or two for him but I think it will do. I kind of messed up on his
glyph because I was doing it from memory, and when I checked the movie this morning it's all wrong, but you get the idea. I'll just rework later. I am still studying the gorilla vest so any photos
will help. I have the cheapest video player and there's no pause button on it, so I have to take notes as the actors are moving around. Kind of hard!! Guess I should just get a dvd so I can do a
still shot.
I have never filled in bubbles or anything of that nature, but I think I can wing it. Can you post me some gorilla heads if it will fit on my Mego, and is it hard to replace the head?
Thanks, Jessica.

Yes these are the Mego action 8-inch figures. I don't really know much about them--I have just been introduced into the mego world, so I am learning everything I can. I think
the Zira I own has a "type 2 body" so she's more fragile but she poses better, and Cornelius has a "type 1 body" because he's got the metal rivets and he's freakin' hard to
pose!! I had to tie down his hands with string behind his back to take the first shot. I tried to use as much of the sewing machine as possible to create their outfits but a lot of it had to be hand
sewn because the selvages are so small and the machine kept chewing up the fabric. I am going to study the first movie this weekend so that I could recreate the soldier's outfit on my gorilla
doll. Someday I will change his head with a better sculpt, but for now I will have to settle for a swanky outfit.
I also have the sideshow Cornelius and Zira, but their outfits excelllent so I don't have to do anything to them--and they are just so spectacularly spot on!
I am still holding my breath for future sideshow apes.
Thanks, they look great. I know nothing about the action figures at all - these ones are the 8 inch ones, yes?

Not having a great time at the minute so I've been keeping pretty quiet.
As you know Michael I own my own business so as always that just keeps getting in the way of life :)
As I say to people who ask how long I've owned the shop "only 18 years it just seems like 50 !!"
Hope your business goes well !!!!
I've been meaning to post about Jessica's Mego ape pics now that they've been put in the files ...I'll try to do that soon...Might even show my Caesar custom Mego I made...

Graham, can't wait to see your Caesar custom. If it's the cute little one wearing the chains, maybe I've already seen it! I've been trawling around the internet for anything Apes related
because I have been bitten again by my love for the Planet of the Apes. I just posted my Julius to the photos section. I was busy sculpting and baking the boots until way past midnight last
night and I'm pretty happy with the way they came out. I need to sand down the boots and repaint them but can't because I don't have any fine sandpaper lying around and I'm too lazy to go to
the store. I still need to make him another prop so that I can make an official portrait of him.
I will just take a short-cut and make a gorilla vest and put that over his current outfit to make him a soldier, so that would save me some sewing. Hopefully I can see some photos of gorilla vests that people
have made.
Just yesterday I braved the heavy drizzle and went to the fabric store. There I found all the fabric to make Zira an Escape costume..I will be making her swing jacket and the outfit that goes inside
it. I hope the fabric I got has enough drape. Can't wait to get started on her costume, but I need to complete the gorilla vest first!!!
Jessica.

Yes – owning a business is a form of

I had no idea it would be this stressful!

**** No, Zira only came on the one body style... They never created a "Type 2" female body (Unless you want to count the stupid bady they made later on that didn't have posable limbs...)
As for Cornelius, yeah, metal rivted is a T1 body... If you're having trouble posing him, it sounds like the inner elastic might need to be replaced with new tight elastic... He will stand a lot better then...
But, Cornelius and Galen (who are virtually interchangable MEGO figures) came on both T1 and T2 bodies.

Oh. Thanks regarding Zira. Didn't know that. She has bendable/poseable arms but no metal--just plastic, and she doesn't have the elastic. And, looking at the wrist...it's all
plastic.
On another note, I just finished sewing my gorilla soldier's uniform! I think he looks gorgeous! I don't have any rifles so I guess I will have to create something for him as a prop--don't
know yet. The bandolier I made doesn't look so hot...I can probably sew a better one, but it will have to do for now. He looks really mean now!! I just have to sew down the snaps and think of a
prop, and then he'll be ready for a portrait.
My son wants me to buy him an action figure (but a man)...so I'm kind of excited about that. He said he wants one that can have a gun or rifle, and I said, yeah, sure! Why not...(I can always borrow the
rifle for a prop, right?)...So where does a girl find a cheap 8" mego doll around here?
Jessica.
