.htmlGraham,
Yes, I think the outfit is coming along at a fast clip. The only trouble is I have to stay up way beyond my bedtime because I get so caught up in it, and I also have to tend to my 3 boys. Can't
really get my paws on the crafting until they have been tucked into bed. I just have so much fun when I do stuff like this--it's a great hobby and it's way faster than knitting!

WOW!
So how much would the set cost I wonder?
Wouldn’t these make an awesome trading
card set?

These photos are for sale, if anybody's interested. It's probably
too rich for my coffers. If I have to ask, then I definitely can't
afford.
Supertouch ally COLETTE
quietly debuted one of the most interesting shows of the new year when SARAH LERFEL opened the doors to the
legendary Parisian style house's PLANET
OF THE APES retrospective photo exhibit this week. Taken by
renowned Magnum photographer DENNIS
STOCK in 1967 during the movie's production, the lensman
captured the film's actors in casual moments on set and on the surrounding
streets of Hollywood
in all its late sixties glory. To commemorate the exhibit (as well as the
movie's 40th anniversary and Magnum's 60th), Colette has created a beautiful 12
print portfolio of images from the show, available in a strictly limited
edition of 12 sets. Faithful collectors had best act fast before Nigo buys them
all. HAVE A LOOK:

Still have some tweaking but he's coming along. Hope to complete
by this weekend and take portraits. Everything pictured that is not
plastic (Mego ape and horse) was made by me.
Still to make:

Still here, just slowly falling apart !!!
My left arms "frozen" at the
moment (I say moment but it's been about 10 weeks !!) so I can't lift it
any further than chest height.
Ofcourse I'm left handed !!!
This is now topped of with a cold/flu
that's infected me about 3 or 4 weeks ago ...falling apart I say !!
Best,Graham.

Hey! There goes Julius' broom! I have never seen a still photo of that one or at least never noticed it before. I had seen this specific photo in a book called Planet of the Apes Revisited, but
I never noticed the broom before. Cool!
It's one of my favorite photos from the lot. I also like the one where Zira looks like she's primping her make-up artist.

Regarding Julius' broom, I will have to adjust the one I sculpted. I didn't know it came angled like that (I couldn't tell from the movie because my darn VCR doesn't

The Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the creation of Planet of the Apes-style warriors by crossing humans with apes, according to recently uncovered secret documents.
Moscow archives show that in the mid-1920s Russia's top animal breeding scientist, Ilya Ivanov, was ordered to turn his skills from horse and animal work to the quest for a
super-warrior. According to Moscow newspapers, Stalin told the scientist: "I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."
In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed the request to the Academy of Science with the order to build a "living war machine". The order came at a time when the Soviet Union was embarked on a crusade to turn
the world upside down, with social engineering seen as a partner to industrialisation: new cities, architecture, and a new egalitarian society were being
created. The Soviet authorities were struggling to rebuild the Red Army after bruising wars.
And there was intense pressure to find a new labour force, particularly one that would not complain, with Russia about to embark on its first Five-Year Plan for fast-track industrialisation.
Mr Ivanov was highly regarded. He had established his reputation under the Tsar when in 1901 he established the world's first centre for the artificial insemination of racehorses.
Mr Ivanov's ideas were music to the ears of Soviet planners and in 1926 he was dispatched to West Africa with $200,000 to conduct his first experiment in impregnating chimpanzees.
Meanwhile, a centre for the experiments was set up in Georgia - Stalin's birthplace - for the apes to be raised.
Mr Ivanov's experiments, unsurprisingly from what we now know, were a total failure. He returned to the Soviet Union, only to see experiments in Georgia to use monkey sperm in human volunteers similarly fail.
A final attempt to persuade a Cuban heiress to lend some of her monkeys for further experiments reached American ears, with the New York Times reporting on the story, and she dropped the idea amid the uproar.
Mr Ivanov was now in disgrace. His were not the only experiments going wrong: the plan to collectivise farms ended in the 1932 famine in which at least four million died.
For his expensive failure, he was sentenced to five years' jail, which was later commuted to five years' exile in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan in 1931. A year later he died, reportedly after
falling sick while standing on a freezing railway platform.

"I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and

In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed

Soviet Union was embarked on a crusade to turn the world
upside down, with social engineering seen as a partner to industrialisation:
new cities, architecture, and a new egalitarian society were being created. The
Soviet authorities were struggling to rebuild the Red Army after bruising wars.
And there was intense pressure to find a new labour force, particularly
one that would not complain, with
Russia about to embark on its first

A final attempt to persuade a Cuban heiress to lend some of her monkeys

That’s what is so very frustrating
about these groups- we really have reached the point where most of us have
discussed things to death.
That’s why Neil and I want to get a
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page together for Hunter’s web-site
where we look at the really big threads and summarize points. Then when
the questions/topics arise we could refer people to these and see if they still
have anything to add.
But then that can also take some of the
human interaction out of it. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad
thing… J

Was Bogey still kicking?
But yes there are a few interesting
choices there.
I mean they went with the ridiculously
impossible “rescue” mission (as discussed before – how the
hell could you get a message to travel back through time 2,000 years to ANSA so
they could launch Brent and Skipper?!?!?).
They should have ditched Heston
altogether.
Didn’t someone (Oliver Stone?)
decide to make a sequel to Planet, ignoring the sequels and starting again as
he felt they originally should have?
The sequel should have been about what you
do when you are an intelligent human in this place – and the obvious
thing is to take back the planet!
It could have also touched on how they got
to this point, and left that open for a prequel or even another sequel that
shows a lot of scenes from the ape revolt.
Anyway – it’s done now.

No sign in any of the recent Previews catalogues but there was a listing for full sets, bagged together at a discount price, the interesting thing with this was it wasn't listed under MR Comics
but the name the company seemed to use before any comics came out ....Metal Rose I think ,or some such (At home at the minute so can't check)

One thing that bugged the shit out of me
was when Marvel stopped its run with little warning, after mentioning projects
they were about to deliver.
I was hoping that one day this (or any!)
group would attract people who worked at Marvel back then, who might fill us in
on whether roughs were done etc. Sadly this has not happened and we may never
know.
Ty – I know there were wonderful
extras planned for the GN. Any chance you could find out if these will remain?

I was going to post on this last night but I slept on it instead. (It's Sunday, here, in the UK now)
So due to the fact that I really should be doing some work which I don't want to be doing, I thought I do do one of my yearly/6 monthly pondering on things in connection with your post ,Michael,
but also some others from the last day or so.
I might work towards a point, some where, but I'm sure I'll just ramble ...still bear with me.
I've never worried too much about the fact that topics pop up quite often.
Usually it's a new person "talking" so ,by it's very nature ,that brings a new perspective to the subject. If I don't find the topic interesting (Because we've discussed it
before) then it's no big deal.
The idea for a FAQ is a good one ,if it stimulates the chat, the final line of Michaels post is what got me thinking about this stuff, the bit about taking "... Some
of the human interaction out of it." because I do think it has the potential to do this ,which I don't think would be a good thing.
Why people on forums get their knickers in a twist about things ,like topics coming up again , is beyond me.
(just to make it clear I'm not
saying anyone here has done this but it's a frequent pattern on other forums I visit, most of which I don't post on because of stuff like this)
I might be part of the group but it's not "mine" any more than it's anyone elses who aren't the owners. (Michael +Neil, though I'm not sure Neil still is one or not.)
Therefore it shouldn't just reflect my points of view.
I've always seen the group... as well, a chat down the pub with mates...the conversation will probably wander all over the place ...repeat itself...whatever, but the subjects are really
just a pretext to hang out with friends.
I do
think one of the reason there's less posting going on at the moment is because last year there was a lot of pissing and moaning about "off topic posts" at the time I thought the inevitable
conclusion to this would be people would post less ,I know I did.
If topics have been done to death and people feel restriced in what they can say then ... we get to the point where posts do end up as a trickle.
Michael started a topic on the "new "Dr Who in the context that they've managed to bring back a 30 odd year old show with some success and could this be done with POTA , the topic
was shouted down as "off topic..."
Now I also think the group is going through a fallow period as a part of a natural cycle, just looking at the achive shows how active it's been for a number of years...we're all
getting on in years...we need the rest

The DG's not
pointless... (well to put a philosophical hat on for a moment,in the greater scheme of things we're all ,as a species, pissing into the wind... 90 % of human behaviour can be seen as
"pointless" so no, the DG isn't pointless or no more so than any other group or human activity that goes beyond basic survival for that matter.)
I can see it now , "Fitzgerald put that pen down... Rembrandt drop the brush... it's all just "pointless"...hmm...
I've said before on a good day the DG might make me smile...this might be a small thing but as I get older I find I've come round to thinking, it's the small things that might just
matter the most.
If the DG gives each of us a smile... a moments escape and distraction...some pleasure and may be a tiny, tiny bit of enlightenment then ...it's more than worth while.
Best wishes, Graham.

Hey, alla you monkeys, sorry I've been away so long.
Even though I really really dislike the whole Christmas season, I hope that those of you who dig it had a good one. For that matter, those of you who don't
dig it, I hope you also had a good holiday season -- be it Christmas, Channukah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, whathaveyou. For me, it was mostly the Airing of the Grievances... Oy!
And am I glad it's over. Until next year, when they'll ratchet up the Xmas Machine even earlier
, gobbling up not only 12 days in December... but all of November... October... hell, they'll probably stretch it all the way back into September! If there's a "War on Christmas" maybe it's
because the Christmas fanatics have been annexing so much of the calendar year for their oh, so very special holiday. Christmas declared war and has been waging it for too goddamned long without anybody pushing it back
into the calendrical niche where it belongs! I'll give 'em December 24th (i.e. the "Eve") and the 25th (i.e. the "Day")... hell, I'll even tolerate that "Twelve Days of
Christmas" just like in that anti-Protestant ultra-Catholic carol/song. That's 12 friggin' days... one-thirtieth of the whole damn year. Isn't that smeggin' enough???
Phuq! There was Christmas crap in the mall before Halloween! A radio station here in Fargo started playing all Christmas music all the time
on November 1st... replacing (for 2 months!) the Oldies station that plays almost all the listenable music that there is on the damned radio! Those bastards!
Well... it's over. For now. For another, oh... 8 or 9 months, if we're lucky.
Now that that's outta the way, let me set up a topic for POTA discussion.
1. Zira attempts to take custody of Brent and Nova, who had been captured the day earlier, after their visit with her and Cornelius.
2. Ursus intercedes, insisting that the two humans are "marked for Target Practice"... and a gorilla soldier none-too-gently leads the two unfortunate humans out to the courtyard, tugging on their
leashes.
3. The gorilla puts Brent and Nova into one of those cage-wagons and locks the lock.
4. Zira, who has followed them out, says: "I'll take the key!"... and the gorilla gives it to her.
WHY??? Won't he need it when he gets to the Target Range??? How the hell else is he supposed to unlock the damned lock?
Answer: Perhaps all these cage-wagons have identical locks, and a single style of key opens all
of them. That would be a good idea, just in case one gorilla accidentally lost his key to a cage-wagon lock: when he arrived somewhere where another key-toting gorilla may be, that other gorilla could use his key
to open the cage. That kinda makes sense.
To continue...
5. Zira, once the gorilla driver is about to head out for the Target Range, yells: "Wait! Wait! I'd better 'double-lock' the door!" ... and she unlocks
it, whispering "Good luck!" to Brent.
6. Somewhere on the road from Ape City to the Target Range, Brent gets out of the cage... climbs up on top of the cage... and assaults the gorilla from behind and above. The gorilla isn't a pushover, though, and
they duke it out for a bit... the gorilla eventually holding Brent by his arm and grinding his foot on Brent's shoulder...
7. ... and then the branch of a tree knocks that gorilla off the top of the wagon cage, flat on his back on the side of the road. Which is good for Brent.
Question: What happens to Zira when they deduce that she must have aided the humans by unlocking the cage door?
Think about it. If the gorilla dies, then eventually some other gorilla (probably) will happen along that road and will discover his corpse. And, depending on which direction this other gorilla is traveling, he either
found the horseless cage-wagon first and then found the gorilla driver dead... or he found the dead gorilla and then
found the horseless cage-wagon a bit further down the road. With the two humans gone -- having unhitched the horses from the wagon -- it will be obvious that they must have somehow gotten that lock unlocked.
I'm assuming here that the gorillas aren't so stupid that they can't tell the difference between a working lock and a forced (i.e. damaged) lock.
If the gorilla driver does not
die... and if he later comes to... then he will tell whoever finds him -- and word will eventually reach the higher-ups in the military chain-of-command -- that the male human suddenly attacked him while he was
driving the wagon. This despite the fact that the wagon's cage-lock had been locked firstly by a gorilla and then secondly "double-locked" by Zira!
Zira's only prayer to avoid a charge of "Aiding and Abetting the escape of a Human"... or of Treason -- perhaps even "Accessory to Murder" -- is if that gorilla is killed
by Brent and if her unlocking of that cage's lock is never traced to her.
In my POTA project, I'm working in a whole subplot regarding a gorilla police officer who uses his deductive faculties to trace the attempted murder of that gorilla driver to Dr. Zira. When he finds out that the
gorilla who first locked the cage subsequently gave the key to Zira (who had said, "I'll take the key!" remember), he'll figure out that Zira had been trying to help
those two humans. Humans who were not merely brute animals, since they obviously knew how to unhitch the horses from the wagon.
He'll deduce that those two humans (or, one of 'em, at any rate) must be unlike the majority of the pathetic brutes who've been hunted and captured. Indeed, they must be humans
like that Talking Human who had caused such a ruckus recently.
Perhaps that's why those gorillas who were searching for Brent and Nova near the Queensboro Plaza cave entrance were still
doing so. "Why can't we go back to our outfits?" ... "Because the Sarge says to keep looking until we find 'em..."
Because the Sarge (and his commanding officers) know that the humans who escaped from that wagon are like Taylor. Perhaps (they might wonder) those two humans might be
scouts from the inhabited Forbidden Zone -- intelligent humans posing as the animal-types whom the gorillas hunt.
It's lucky for Zira that she leaves Ape City with Cornelius and Milo when she does... because there's a warrant out for her arrest for either the murder or the
attempted murder of that gorilla wagon-driver (depending on whether or not I decide to have that gorilla wind up dying from that collision with the branch and the hard fall to the ground.
I know we've talked up virtually everything in POTAdom that there is to talk about... but I don't recall any discussion about this element of the story. Well, you've heard my
take on this... so, you monkeys, DISCUSS!!!

The new "Terminator" TV show premieres
tonight on, er, Fox (but it's produced by Warner Bros.). I always kinda
saw the "Terminator" movies as similar to POTA in having a bleak future for
humanity and concentrating on one threat (machines instead of apes) for a
streamlined concept instead of the many aliens of the "Star Trek" and "Star
Wars" variety. They didn't deal with all the topics "Apes" did, they were
basically chase movies. But they were similar in giving sci-fi quality visuals
and serious intent.
And now "Terminator" is even more akin to
"Apes" as it juggles more balls in the air. And already they are reportedly
throwing their chronology out the window, something POTA often gets popped for.
"Terminator 3" gave the year 1997 as the demise of the character Sarah Connor
and this new series, with Sarah Connor as main character, takes place after that
date. Those making the show say they've pretty much ignored T3 and just stayed
with the famed first two James Cameron movies. Just goes to show that POTA isn't
alone in shaking up it's chronology like a snow globe. And with a planned
trilogy of new movies as well, "Terminator" will be just as busy as "Apes"
once was.
But the TV show is getting good reviews so
I'll probably check it out. I still wish Fox had given the "Apes" keys to James
Cameron, though. Reportedly he's planning a major assault on sci-fi movie making

tonight.
I also had the misfortune of watching the Bionic Woman. I think that
that show had some promise as well at first, but I stopped watching
after the third episode as it had already gone 'formulaic' by then.

It's hard to say. Unfortunately I watched T2
before this and it suffers by comparison. I know it's a TV show and it can't
compete with a movie (especially a James Cameron movie) but visually it's not
even up to par with a "Lost". It looks very small, and right now they're just
redoing what happened in the movies. The cast is pretty good. If it can find
it's own footing and do stories more fitting a TV show (good sci-fi scripts,
interesting story lines) instead of trying to be like the movies, it might be
good. And it needs to come up with a better look. Right now it's kind of
laughable but it has it's moments. Since I love "Terminator" I'll give it a
couple more chances.
Haven't seen "Bionic Woman", heard it's
terrible. The reviews I saw said "Terminator" is much better.

Did you watch it
Jeff? Was it any good?
Did anyone have the
misfortune to watch Bionic Woman? Boy that
stinks!
The new "Terminator" TV show
premieres tonight on, er, Fox (but it's produced by Warner Bros.). I
always kinda saw the "Terminator" movies as similar to POTA in having a bleak
future for humanity and concentrating on one threat (machines instead of apes)
for a streamlined concept instead of the many aliens of the "Star Trek" and
"Star Wars" variety. They didn't deal with all the topics "Apes" did, they
were basically chase movies. But they were similar in giving sci-fi quality
visuals and serious intent.
And now "Terminator" is
even more akin to "Apes" as it juggles more balls in the air. And already they
are reportedly throwing their chronology out the window, something POTA often
gets popped for. "Terminator 3" gave the year 1997 as the demise of the
character Sarah Connor and this new series, with Sarah Connor as main
character, takes place after that date. Those making the show say they've
pretty much ignored T3 and just stayed with the famed first two James Cameron
movies. Just goes to show that POTA isn't alone in shaking up it's chronology
like a snow globe. And with a planned trilogy of new movies as
well, "Terminator" will be just as busy as "Apes" once
was.
But the TV show is getting
good reviews so I'll probably check it out. I still wish Fox had given the
"Apes" keys to James Cameron, though. Reportedly he's planning a major assault
on sci-fi movie making with his 2009 "Avatar" for Fox. A groundbreaking sci-fi
movie from Fox? How long's it been?

This just in! I happened across the current
issue of Lee's Toy Review magazine (# 183, Jan. '08) and there's an article
about collector Bruce Zalkin. He met up with someone who was a Mego designer
back in the day (I guess his specialty was action figure clothes). Anyway,
Zalkin was shown lots of prototypes the designer saved; clothes, heads, etc.
That stuff wasn't for sale but Zalkin did buy prototype packaging (pictured in
the magazine). He says the rarest is the rough maive-colored backing card for
Zira (the back of the card is blank). He's also got some other
stuff.
Anyway, he putting this stuff up on ebay
this week. I wasn't able to google it but I wanted to get this info to the
groups right away. Good luck on this stuff. His ebay name is littlemarz .
I have a prototype I'm rather fond of. It's
the rough prototype of Hasbro's '90's Zira. She's got no coloring and her
clothes are a different color, brown and black instead of green. And there's
writing on her that the designers did. Some shop thought it was abad imitation
and I got it for $5. That's probably my best "Apes" bargain ever. Ah,
prototypes...

My guess is that your shot is from "The Gladiators" because it's shown a lot closer and it's even spoke about by Barlow: "Rather nice isn't it? One of the humans did it. Some of them
are surprisingly talented, even artistic..."
It's more of just background decor in "The Horse Race"...

Adam Rifkin was the one who was going to
ignore the sequels to POTA and pick up after the first film. He even had Taylor
and Cornelius in early drafts (this was around 1988). Peter Jackson also wanted
to continue from the earlier films, and had Roddy in his corner. Fox said,
"Next!"
Oliver Stone (the one I wanted most if he
took a personal interest in it, which he never did) set it in the past but felt
it also connected to the previous movies, seeing time as a circle (apes ruled
both in the past and the future).
James Cameron told me his idea was to
concentrate on the first two movies "with some new ideas".
All of these had some connection to the old
movies. Maybe that's why Fox turned them down. They wanted to start from
scratch. Rifkin complained that Fox wanted it to be family friendly. I think
ultimately Fox wanted to play it too safe and lost guys like Stone and
Cameron. Jeff

But yes there are a
few interesting choices there.
I mean they went with
the ridiculously impossible “rescue” mission (as discussed before – how the
hell could you get a message to travel back through time 2,000 years to ANSA
so they could launch Brent and Skipper?!?!? ).
They should have
ditched Heston altogether.
DidnÂ’t someone
(Oliver Stone?) decide to make a sequel to Planet, ignoring the sequels and
starting again as he felt they originally should
have?
The sequel should
have been about what you do when you are an intelligent human in this place –
and the obvious thing is to take back the planet!
It could have also
touched on how they got to this point, and left that open for a prequel or
even another sequel that shows a lot of scenes from the ape
revolt.
Anyway – it’s done
now.

That’s interesting Jeff. I
thought they said “next” mainly because they had better things to
do with their money and “talking monkeys” are still a risk –
regardless of the fact that they once made money.
I mean – ask anyone who has financed
anything POTA….
When I spoke to Medicom they clearly lost
money (and really – HOW?!?!). I thought marketing to the Japanese would
be a good trick. The fact that Medicom stopped making apes proves
otherwise.
And this is ALL really weird because apes
DID make money! Look at all the toys and junk they brought out! It
was the precursor to all major sci-fi franchises!
But the recent trading card series flopped
(well, maybe if he’d have listened to what the group volunteered….).
Palisades action figures bit the dust (as did
the company I think), the REVOLUTION comics didn’t do too well. It
seems to be a poor decision to do anything apes!
The best stuff being done now is being
produced in the houses of fans, and even these (Greg’s Trading Cards,
Chris Hight’s action figures, Neil’s comics – to name a few)
are not being appropriately celebrated.
I think we can all agree that POTA is dead.
Would everyone agree?

Adam Rifkin was the one who was going to ignore the sequels to
POTA and pick up after the first film. He even had Taylor and Cornelius in
early drafts (this was around 1988). Peter Jackson also wanted to continue from
the earlier films, and had Roddy in his corner. Fox said, "Next!"

Yeah that’s something I have wanted
to write since I was a kid – show a futuristic, high-tech ruling ape race
and then have a nice twist to show they are actually pre-human. How to
pull it off though…..I mean there would be SOME archaeological evidence….that’s
what turned me off it anyway….unless it was on another PLANET….

Oliver Stone (the one I wanted most if he took a personal interest in
it, which he never did) set it in the past but felt it also connected to the
previous movies, seeing time as a circle (apes ruled both in the past and the
future).

I’d love to know more – but I
wonder if he really remembers (or cares!).
This was the one to star Arnie right?
Man – I tell yas – it would at
LEAST have been a HIT!

James Cameron told me his idea was to concentrate on the first
two movies "with some new ideas".

Yeah I had a poster or 2 of him.
He looks fascinating.
I hadn’t recalled his being born in
captivity.
Is he still alive?

Had a poster from some kids magazine up in my room for
years as a
kid. Snowflake could never have survived in the wild.

No – I didn’t see this.
Was it about Snowflake?
What was sad?

Didn't anybody else see the 70's made for TV film
"The Ivory Ape?" Had me crying like a little girl when I was a young
lad. ;)
