Hi Everyone! New here and I've been an Ape Enthusiast since seeing
Conquest at the Drive In as a kid! I devoured everything Apes ever since.

About 4 or 5 years ago I was at a collector's show in Massachusetts.
I came across what I took to be some of the coolest ape figures I had
ever seen...the Medicom Ultra Detail figures.

I immediately snatched up a Corneilius and a Zaius. Over the next
year or so I Ebay'd my way to a complete collection. I paid some
serious money for some of the figures but I eventually got them all.

NOW I look on Ebay and these things are going for $2 - $9 in most
cases...I am not looking to profit of these and I am by no means a
SMART toy collector but I thought some of you savvy humans might know
why these things are suddenly so cheap!?

Anyway, I am psyched to be part of this group! GO APE!!

Hi Rick and welcome to the group.  I think they are cheap because they have been over produced.  There are plenty more left over than there are people who want to pay the $30US they started at.

Makes me wonder if they flopped in Japan too – which is highly distressing for me because I always held out hope that there might be enough Japanese POTA fans to make up for the 100 or so left in the rest of the world.

*** "Dear, you're a scientist! Don't you believe your own eyes?"

Being forced by the enforcers of the Status Quo to ignore the evidence of her own eyes undoubtedly galled Zira. It's no wonder that she later referred to the Orangutans as "blinkered, pseudoscientific geese"!

In BENEATH, when Zaius says "There is a time for truth--!" she replies, "... and the time is always now!"

In ESCAPE, Milo -- urging his companions to remain silent, to pretend (i.e. lie) that they are incapable of communicating verbally with their human captors -- says, "There is a time for truth -- and a time, not for lies, but to find out who our friends are and who our enemies are..."

I've always had the impression that Milo had been informed (by Zira and Cornelius) about the conversation they had recently had with Zaius in their home, and that Milo was referencing that conversation when he quoted Zaius verbatim: "There is a time for truth..."

It's sad, but Milo's advice was good: the Ape-onauts don't get into any real trouble until their ability to talk is revealed. It is what Zira says during the Presidential Commission hearing that gives Hasslein the ammunition to go at her later, when at Camp Eleven. "As to humans, I've dissec--... uh, I've examined thousands..." etc. That single almost Freudian slip-of-the-tongue does not go unnoticed by Hasslein, since the very next shot shows him reacting to it.

Also sad is the fact that right after Zira tells Cornelius that she's glad that Hasslein had used the drug to force her to tell the interrogators "everything"... right after this... not mere words but actions seal their fates: Cornelius loses his temper and inadvertently causes the death of their Orderly. Cornelius' actions, coupled with Zira's unsettling revelations about the Future, provide Hasslein with all the moral backing he needs to go into action against them, even against the express wishes of the President. "They've killed... now they must be killed..."

In an hour of public danger, perhaps it is best to keep a lid on the Truth. But perhaps it is best to reveal the Truth in such a moment of public danger... who's to say? You can't do both , and once you've chosen one option there's no way to know how the other option would've panned out. Zaius was right to fear the Unknown...

Patrick

P.S. Even though he couldn't have known much of his parents' adventures, Caesar seems to have taken to heart the notion that Deception is a tool in the arsenal of a would-be revolutionary. When he blurts out "Lousy human bastard!" he reveals the Truth of his ability to talk -- which was bad for him. When he pretends to be a docile, not-too-"bright" chimpanzee (purposely screwing up as a bartender), he is being Deceptive... living a lie which serves a higher purpose. For all her principles, Zira was being naive regarding the import of the "whole truth" ... even while she was willing to keep some things a secret -- except from Lewis and Stevie.

James just posted this on some of the other Apes groups, but since he's not a member here I'm cross-posting it for all who are only members here and might not otherwise see this announcement.

Greg P.

This is a very special announcement. Our good friend Hunter has done it again and put together a 2nd Planet of the Apes Rarities DVD ( https://pota. goatley.com/ dvd/rarities2/).

This a wonderful collection of rare moments and a must for the DVD collection of any serious POTA fan. And there are two ways you can get your own copy:
  1. Send $2.50 (inside the U.S.) or $3.50 (outside the U.S.) to Greg P. via his PayPal account: urko3085@sbcglobal. net . If you don't have a PayPal account email Greg at the same email to arrange to send him the payment by Money Order.
  2. Send James a blank DVD-R or DVD+R with a self addressed stamped envelope (email him privately at jamesa1102@aol. com for his address).
That's all you have to do. Well worth the time & cost.
Additionally, anyone who wants a Rarities 2 DVD Wrap and Disc label, they can be Downloaded from the pota group's files section: http://movies. groups.yahoo. com/group/ pota/files/ Rarities% 202%20DVD/ .
Once again thanks to Hunter for putting this DVD together and to everyone who contributed all the rare gems from their own video collections to make this happen.

Well, not fine by me . I think that some concepts just don't go together. Just because both "POTA" and "LOGAN'S RUN" take place in a post-Apocalyptic future doesn't mean that they belong together.

As I said before, James Bond and Jonny Quest don't belong together, even though they both involve Gadgets, Action, and cool music.

There have been attempts to cross over Sherlock Holmes with Count Dracula, and I think that's just wrong. Conan Doyle wrote a story in which Vampirism was thought by some to be at the root of the mystery... and Holmes not only proves that false, he goes out of his way to dispense with the very idea of the world being haunted by ghosts and goblins. His world has verisimilitude because it is not based on notions of fantasy and the supernatural. His is a world of Facts and Evidence, both of which can be perceived through the ordinary (or, in Holmes' case, extraordinary) use of the senses, and through which Deductions can be made. When Holmes explains his supposedly astounding deductions, it is plain -- after the fact -- that his deductions are the result of an attention to detail and plain logic. There's no magic in it. It's a matter of training and genius.

I enjoy a good vampire story as much as anybody else... but to cross over such a supernatural paradigm with the Sherlockian world of Fact and Logic -- a Science-based world, i.e. the real world -- is just wrong. And Conan Doyle wouldn't approve.

If it's okay (with some) to cross-over "PLANET OF THE APES" with "LOGAN'S RUN"... then why not throw in "DAMNATION ALLEY" and "THE TERMINATOR" and "CHERRY 2000" and "WIZARDS" and who knows what other post-Apocalyptic scenario? Where does it end? And what is gained by it? Doesn't it cheapen "POTA"? And those other flicks?

POTA was crossed over with ALIEN NATION... and I wish it hadn't been. They didn't belong together, and it shows. I read "APE NATION" once and haven't re-read it since. It was like trying to eat a peanut butter and ketchup sandwich. Sorry... no-can-do... some things just don't go together, dammit!

Other fans may have other preferences, but for me POTA is POTA (and by POTA I'm referring to the 5 original films and the 14 TV episodes -- all other "classic" POTA stuff being peripheral, such as the cartoon, the Marvel stories, etc). I don't want my POTA "cut" with any other substance: I want it pure.

Just received my copy through the post.

Haven't had chance to look properly yet, just a quick skim (I'm getting old I have to work up to these things !) but it looks great.

Looking forward to watching the William Creber interview.

I'd just like to thank Hunter and all the contributors it's very much appreciated.

Best,Graham.

Hi Everyone! New here and I've been an Ape Enthusiast since seeing
Conquest at the Drive In as a kid! I devoured everything Apes ever since.

About 4 or 5 years ago I was at a collector's show in Massachusetts .

GO APE!!

I thought you liked Aussies better than the English Greg! So why did
you send Graham's before mine?!?!? :)

Graham - you are very welcome. The Creber interview is from the
Japanese TV Show ICARUS Collection. All other shows are exactly the
same as all other releases (some people are around who falsely claim
the Japanese ICARUS Collection contains episodes with extra
scenes....not the case!).

The ICARUS is very cool.

And yes again I'd like to thank Hunter for getting it together, Greg
for making sure all ape fans can get one, and all other contributors.

It's good to see what POTA fans can do - rather than being reminded
constantly what they can't or won't do (or choose to destroy).

Don't worry - it's a good question and I really don't know if I
answered it correctly.

It's just as possible that someone in the US thought it could make
money and they ordered more produced. I would suggest, however, that's
not the case.

Also, I have recently noticed that ENTIRE, COMPLETE collections of the
Medicoms with all variants (not necessarily including the alternative
CORNELIUS) are going for a fair price. It's only CERTAIN figures that
are available cheap. Again I would say because there were more of them
or they sold less of them.

It's really hard to keep the faith these days. It really looks grim
for Planet of the Apes.

Since that shitty POTA 2001 movie things have just become exponentially
worse.

I was looking forward to the PALISADES release. But that's not
happening.

The Megos are cool - but they are REPROS! Why didn't they release some
MUTANTS, or a Taylor that looks like Taylor, or look at what MEDICOM
did with their releases?

Also - what tends to happen now is the arse drops out of the market for
the originals (look at the prices of original boxed Care Bears 3 years
ago and compare to now when they are remaking them!).

Ah well...till then we have Neil's comics.

Neil - any chance we could start getting something more fluent/regular?

The only thing I did not like was that Married with Children 'Ape'

this particular episode wasn't really funny. Still nice to have on the
rareties DVD though.

Thanks to all who put work into this.

Also getting a costume made at some point. I have a green jump suit and will put some better pictures up there when I have mastered the process (The make-up). Have had loads of help so far (Via e-mail) from Pota fans.

I'm not a fan of most of the spoofs and started to leave them off, but
when I was putting the first disc together, I received quite a bit of

At least that explains why it wasn't funny. I thought it WAS a real
MWC episode (or a part of one at least). What through me off was that
4 cast members were in ape costume (so you really can't tell whose
under the suit/make up) and then Bud comes along.

WRT opting for or against these parodies, I'd rather then be on the
DVDs. We can only judge if they are good or bad by seeing them
ourselves. Hearing about a parody, even hearing that it's a BAD
parody, still makes most fans want to at least see it and decide for
themselves. And that's the whole point of having these 'rareties'
collections. Or at least a big reason for having them.

True. I do find the Spoofs are usually good for one viewing only (I
think the Elvis/PotA spoof is dumb, but still more amusing than a lot
of the spoofs).

If anyone has any video that has not appeared on the first 2 discs,
please send me email....

If anyone has any Apes-related video that has *not* appeared on the
first 2 Rarities discs, please send me email. I realized after the
fact that I left off a Sonny & Cher spoof that Tim had sent me, so I'm
already thinking about a possible 3rd DVD. However, I don't really
have much besides that spoof and a whole bunch of different trailers,
some of which have appeared on the commercial releases (and the rest I
just find kind of boring).

Because I'm already walking a copyright tightrope, I will not include
things that are available commercially (the "Spaceballs", "Simpsons",
etc, spoofs, for example). But if you have anything else (convention
footage, other TV show references, etc.), please let me know!

Thanks.

The "Beat" column has a tribute up which I think reflects a lot of my thoughts and experiences and certainly is better written than what I'm typing.

I know this is off topic but I also know there's a lot of old comic fans here.

I just thought I'd pass on the news that sadly the comic writer Steve Gerber has passed away.

He and Doug Moench preetty much ruled Marvel in the 70's

      Sad news.

I've been reading "the Essential Man-Thing" collection. The Marvel
monster series were always very special to me & when you add KISS
into the mix.... Well, he had this kids attention. Sad to hear he's
      gone.

Once again thanks to Hunter for putting this DVD together and to everyone who contributed all the rare gems from their own video collections to make this happen.

this e-correspondence with him and perhaps he can share in a little
history about our connection with Paula Crist. We also have a picture

**** Back around when the first RARITIES was either still being compiled or was just compiled and there was talk of a Volume II, some dude either on this group or the other pota group said he had that TONIGHT SHOW appearance with Kim. I emailed him privately asking if he'd be able to either send his tape to Hunter or at least copy it for Hunter and he was like "I don't want to lend my stuff out..." Now whether or not he really had it, no one knows, but my guess is that he was full of it big time... *****

**** I don't recall Mr. Hoknes having anything to do with the RARITIES II project. If he did contribute, I wasn't aware of it. Hunter was the one that compiled everything from footage sent to him, and of course Greg P. is nice enough to help in the distribution of them. ****

June 10th or some other date the American Film Institute is going to
salute the top 50 Sci-Fi films of all times and Planet of the
Apes(1968) is one the films mentioned, but I also read that the SciFi
channel web site is also having people write in their top 10 sci-fi
movies and to have in to them by March 1.

I thought that was neat too.....

the panel session was odd though....no one asked any
questions?? or did the filmaker just not shoot that?
who did shoot all that footage? Jeff K?

                  Hi Mike

No, not right now we don’t.

Well, I don’t and I am fairly sure Neil does not either….

It was edited out when that footage was first shared. The original
panel session was about 45 minutes long, but Jeff K, who taped it (no
big secret, since you can hear people talking to him), tells me that
the rest of it was quite dry. When he first shared the tape, he
thought it best to just end it where he did. Having been to such
things myself, I imagine that was probably a wise thing....
