He’s won a few awards for his part in THE SHIELD and yes, he is THING in FF.

He’s the build of an adult male gorilla and has about the same temperament!

But hey – I thought Michael Clark Duncan would be a perfect gorilla too – obviously the cast isn’t ALWAYS going to guarantee a great result!

Michael Chikilis was in the Commish as a police commissioner, a detective on
"The Shield", Ben Grimm/the Thing on "The Fantastic Four".

Yeah I had to think a while for a good Zaius.

I was actually thinking of his role in BOSTON LEGAL and his voice is what really made me think “YEAH!”

Add to that ODO on DS9 and the UTER LIMITS connection – perfect!  J

Rene Auberjonois played Clayton Runnymede Endicott III on Benson, Odo on
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", Reverend Oliver in the 2000 movie, "the
Patriot", an alien on the "Outer Limits" (later version). He would make an
excellent Zaius.

I would have:

Anthony Daniels (C3PO) as Galen
Skeet Ulrich as Burke
Chris Odonnal (?) as Virdon
Booth Coleman as Zaius
Vinnie Jones as Urko

Just a thought!

Rene is the one I had in mind for Zaius too.  But, Urko I thought Jim Belushi could add a bit of a "slow" minded general.

Hi Folks:

Just wanted to let you all know that I posted a little write up about Cornelius' appearance at Wondercon 2008 in San Francisco and a hand full of photos of the event.
At some point in the near future, Dan Morgan and I will put together a video of the makeup process. So be on the look out for that!

Maybe there are some secret fans who are afraid to announce their passion.

Anyway, if ape fans are a dying breed, I'm doing my best to instill ape love among my progeny.  Already I have converted two of my 3 sons--the middle one I am still working on...

See, i watch very little TV drama so most of these names go over my
head too. I guess the cast of the original Apes series were
established TV actors? Apart from Roddy.

I recognise David Tennant of course from Doctor Who.
Alan Dale (Ugly Betty, the O.C. I think, and of course Neighbours)
was just in an episode of Torchwood. He's got a great menacing voice
that would work through a prosthetic mask.

Frankly I don't buy into the lacking numbers. The problem that I see is that we
are not organized as a fan club.  I love apes, I eat, sleep about apes, my license plate on my car reads
"POTA FAN".  I don't think that ape fans are a dying breed, and if some people think that it is, that's
their opinion.

Maybe there are some secret fans who are afraid to announce their passion.

Anyway, if ape fans are a dying breed, I'm doing my best to instill ape love among my progeny.  Already I have converted two of my 3 sons--the middle one I am still working on...

Well, the may not have disclosed full Ape fandom, but they sure as
heck knew Cornelius. Each camera bug called out something like, "Hey
Cornelius, can I get a shot of you?" People of different age.

As Dan and I approached the Con, we asked ourselves, How many other
Apes - Corneliuses or Ziras do you think we'll see?" There were none.I
honestly believe, however that there's a multitude out there that have
seen the original Pota films, especially the people that attend Cons.
The films are classic sci-fi.

I honestly believe, however that there's a multitude out there that have
seen the original Pota films, especially the people that attend Cons.

Mike Nelson from Mstk 3000, Brian Henson, all made comments about my

That’s been my experience on the whole too – people say “hey – Planet of the Apes!  COOL!”.

But they actually only saw Battle or Conquest of Burton’s abomination!

That, to me, is a person who recognizes your shirt….not a person who would pay to WEAR a shirt (which is the LEAST I would expect from a “FAN”!).

Again, it’s hard to define a “FAN”….but I guess a person would have to have SOMETHING POTA in their house?

True, Neil. I meant to say though, that the folks at these Cons are
mostly appreciators of Pota and recognize a "classic sci-fi" as a genre.

Just a few thoughts on the topic off the top of my head, so I might change my mind come tomorrow :)

POTA seems to be in a "strange" place in pop culture.

There's obviously an appetite for Apes (see Burton's 2001 opening box office) but Joe public has relegated it to a certain type of spot (Oh... that's that movie in the Simpson's with the cute song)

It's viewed with   nostalgic affection, most people "get" the references, but that's as far as it goes.

I think Tom calls it "Classic sc-fi" in one of his posts and I think thats the category the general public puts POTA in, more Outer limits  than say StarWars.

This ofcourse gives Fox a headache because they see POTA as a potential StarWars like franchise and can't understand why this doesn't work .

If you ask me It's apples and oranges...

Best, Graham.

PS oh ... I haven't got any ape t-shirts but that's 'cause I've got a "funny neck"  don't ask !!! :)

also say Planet of the Apes - I love that movie, but they remember the original, most of the people say
that the Tim Burton version is garbage.

To me some fans remember the original POTA more than the Tim Burton abomination proves to me
that the classic is much better than any reimagine version.

If you met me on the street, you would never know I was a die-hard fan.  Even if you come over my house--I am not really a collector.  I don't have a shrine for my items that are Planet of the Apes related.   Yes I have all the movies in VHS and DVD, even the TV series, and yes, I am slowly amassing the theme music for Planet of the Apes.  So maybe that's why it's hard to find other Planet of the Apes fans unless they wear a t-shirt.  And if I saw you wear a Planet of the Apes t-shirt, I would definitely say hello and we'd have a good chat.

I was thinking about how much easier it is for Star Trek fans to find costumes for their movie, so when there is a Trek event, they are definitely out there.  But at the last few ape events, unless you are part of Ape Mania or you have buddies like Tom, or you've got wads of cash, it's really difficult to find stellar costumes that you would not be embarassed to wear...

I'll wish Neil a Happy Birthday but with one caveat.
I know for a FACT that he is not 21, so don't buy into that.
He's 22 and he told me so himself so there!

Now I'm going off to pack for a week long conference in sunny Florida so
I can get away from this wretched nasty snow filled winter.

You'll here from me when I get back.

Just been on ebay and there are original costumes for sale on being Roddy's Cornelelious costume from the first film!!
    $5000.00!!!
Also a few from conquest and what looks like Ursus's gloves!  How come so many collectors also supposedly have the original Roddy costumes?  Very strange indeed.

    Have a great weekend.

He's a talented rip-off artist Mike, as you know.

I cannot disagree with you there. Anyone who sells items they don't even have in stock (in the case I'm     talking about it was the comics) or sells issues of things they don't even have ready to go should be investigated for mail fraud or something you'd think.

After he advertised 5 issues for sale, he emailed me and asked if I wanted to send a picture of myself, a rough outline of a plot, and a few other things.

In other words, HE ADVERTISED THEM BEFORE THEY ARE COMPLETE!!!!!

I thought it was quite strange that after you and he exchanged a few posts here on the board and he was saying  he needed/wanted material for the "40th Anniversary" issue(s) and to contact him if anyone wanted to contribute that all of a sudden a month or so later not only is one issue available, (I'd suspect the touted 40th Anniversary issue) but five issues total, all ready to go after not even having enough material for one issue.

Anything for a buck I guess.

I was thinking the same thing. Yes there were probably a couple of different costumes made for McDowall, but there can't be as many as what are for sale all of the time. Either people are just making things up about them or they're fraudualent. By that I mean they could be real film worn outfits, but they're just being touted as Roddy's because he is the name most associated with APES.

I said as much here as I could. I said a lot during the whole thing about the Zira/Cornelius Car Show (which just seemed to vanish all of a sudden). People commented on the new pictures of the Cornelius make-up at the recent show and others just tossed around how tey show they're an APES fan. I don't quite see where all of this came from. It goes in spurts like every other egroup.

Well, I'd like to echo Graham's comment that Michael and Neil have
always been very welcoming and encouraging to new members. I know
both of you sometimes get frustrated with apathy on the group and
especially with the back-biting that goes on. A while back I was
looking through some of the posts from years ago on the message
archive and it was sad to see people who had been friendly and co-
operative fall out, and Michael especially has suffered from the
nastier side of POTA fandom. Michael's enthusiasm for this group has
helped keep it going, and also might explain his frustration. I hope
whatever prompted this can be resolved and we might see Michael back
    here soon.

I didnt have access to my emails for the past 7 days and come back and find 375 emails.  yeesh!

Ape Chronicles #40-44 are all finished and printed
and anyone who paid up to this week had their copies mailed out 2 days ago from Canada
So propably about 10 days from now the first people will start receiving their copies

AC is of course a compilation of articles, stories, fan fiction etc from various people who send me stuff.     There are some cool things in each issue.

I appreciate the support from those who enjoy the fanzine.

I was a bit surprised to find out AC was criticized this week.  I dont know what the problem is.
I advertised 5 issues were being put together because I had compiled that much stuff from people over the last 3 yrs.  I designed the covers so I could use them for advertisement and laid out the contents and had them printed once they were completed and mailed out once they were completed.

Is it just me or do people spend most of their time criticizing POTA projects on these yahoogroups ?
It would be nice to get more support and input from other POTA fans and not just complaints.

On another note Diamond Distributors contacted me to see if I wanted to open an account with them to sell the new POTA action figures directly at www.PlanetOfTheApesFanClub.com
I would be willing to try and do this if it helps out the POTA fans here to make sure they get them.
I am not sure about pricing yet from Diamond as I havent got details yet.
I appreciate any input on this and whether I should try to stock them or not.

-- Actually you don't have to do too much at all, it all depends on how much you want to put into it. There's the changing of the site colours and picture on a regular basis if you want the group to appear 'fresh' but if you don't want to you don't have to bother with all that 'window dressing' stuff, it's not that important.

What you do have to bother with is run of the mill things like approving new members, making sure the files don't get full, monitoring the posts to make sure things don't get out of hand and do something about it if they do, stimulate discussion etc. and a bit of basic administration stuff.

If you really want to put a massive effort in and keep the group successful, thriving and active there are plenty of tricks of the trade to boost posts such as resurrecting old topics and getting your members to respond (usually works a treat that one!). Actively seeking out new stuff and news to start up discussions (that one doesn't seem to work as well though) or you can, as Jeff pointed out, just write and draw original comics and hope that your members respond to them. Pretty simple really.

T would be an interesting choice. He's got a rebel spirit like Michael. He's been kicked out of his share of groups. And he's a lot more laid back then Michael, which is a plus. Not so much drama. My biggest beef was the idea that there has to be a constant stream of posts for the group to be a "success". What's the difference as long as it serves it's purpose and people enjoy it? BUT the commitment it takes probably will dawn on him slowly. Day after day of having to do it.

Been looking at this thread with sadness.

Oh God, over-sensitive Whitty throws his toys out of the pram yet
    again!!

For fuck's sake mate, you founded a great group but I feel you need to
toughen up and spend less time on it. Stop the paranoia. Go offline
and, if you need to, celebrate your fandom in other ways.

I just bought a 16mm Cinemascope print of BATTLE and I ran it on the
wall tonight for me and my girl and we LOVED it. Now that's cool.

You're Australian for God's sake. You're supposed to be hard.

Stop blubbing like a drama queen and get on with running your group.
Just a tad less regularly to, y'know, do other stuff.

    With respect,
