POTA fans telling me I suck, and helpfully suggesting that I try a
career sweeping out zoo cages instead of writing. (It could
happen...and I'm ready for it.)

revenue to home repairs, so I may have to deal with the ol' Blu-Ray
blues for a bit longer. <.html

Subject: [pota] There was no "third

--- On Sun, 10/19/08, zasco1957 <Zasco1957@aol. com>
wrote:

And how could our three chimp friends possibly have the
know-how and the technology to raise Taylor's ship off of the
bottom of that lake, somehow clean it out, repair it and launch
it right in the nick of time?
*** Did you not read some of the other posts
regarding some of the possible ways the ship was raised?
Apparently not, because there were some ideas thrown out which
did not include an outlandish idea of a third ship... They may
not be something everyone agrees on, but at least they stuck
within the established facts of the first two
films...
Let me ask you, how could Milo know where this
alleged third ship was supposed to be? Did he talk with the crew
members? Did they say "We left an operational ship lying around
in what your people call 'The Forbidden Zone'... Sure, we could
use it to get the hell outta here, but we've decided to just
leave it around for you to use..."
And, you should be asking yourself the same
question you asked above: Whether it's Taylor's ship (as we all
know it is), or the pretend third ship, how would Milo have
known when to launch it? Asking a question like this in
questioning how it could be Taylor's ship is totally pointless
and is no defense to your POV. ***
Besides, this third ship is much smaller than Taylor's; it
even had a side hatch where Taylor's didn't. In addition
to this, there has been several stills from the deleted scenes
on ESCAPE that clearly showed three seats sitting side-by-side,
whereas in Taylor's, there were four...two in front and two in
the back.
*** I
am sick of hearing about the side hatch and smaller
size... You want to know why it was smaller: Because in ESCAPE,
they used the nose prop from PLANET... The different interior
was made up with three seats because it suited their needs for
the unused opening sequence and the side hatch was put on
there because it too was redressing for what they felt was
needed for their opening scene...
When
they were making that film, I'm sure they didn't sit there
thinking how this ship would be analyzed years from then. At the
time of ESCAPE's release, repeated viewings of the films weren't
as accessible as now so the general public probably wouldn't
have given any thought to it looking different, if they even
noticed it at all... They knew it was supposed to be
Taylor's ship because everyone in the film said it is...
Saying
there was a third ship makes about as much sense as
someone saying "That can't really be Zira, after all, she
doesn't look the same in this film as she did in PLANET... That
has to be a second female..." Or someone saying "There has to be
a different ape that was named Cornelius because in BENEATH not
only does that ape not look like he did in PLANET, he is also
taller, so that can't be the same character... " These two
examples hold about as much water as your redressed prop theory
hold... Visual differences aside, we all know that regardless of
the film, it was still Zira, BENEATH's Cornelius was supposed to
be the Cornelius from PLANET, and the ship in ESCAPE is still
Taylor's...
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~
Wait,
I just thought of an idea: The ship in ESCAPE really is a third
ship after all... It was the ship from the TV series...
Councillor Zaius really didn't have that ship blown up, he had
it preserved for study... And after 900 years, it managed to
work it's way across the continent perfectly intact, never
giving way to age or the elements... After 900 years, it ended
up on the east coast where Milo got his hands on it and used it
to get Zira and Cornelius back in time to give birth to their
peoples new savior... It was all part of Councillor Zaius'
master plan... He knew there would come a time when a three
seated prop ship with a side-hatch door would come in handy...
Good thing he talked to those astronauts, they knew the
score... |
What you say is true that "if" they'd go ahead and do that POTA:Genesis
It'd be a whole new incarnation of the APES name, just as Burton's film
Hoo boy!
Don’t hold back Mike!
Jeez we are a difficult bunch (great pun!) to please aren’t we?
We complain about the lack of imagination from FOX, so they commission APE
MANIA (owned by a HUGE fan) to do some stills for a new release, using ORIGINAL
POTA MAKEUPS and posing brand new poses, and IT’S STILL NOT GOOD
ENOUGH!!!!
Frankly, I think Fox was also seeing how
much APEMANIA charges to do costumes and make-up because that new script has
hit and they could get it right this time!!!
I can feel a new movie, and I just hope
they get this one right!
APEMANIA (owned by a HUGE fan) to do some stills for a new release,
using ORIGINAL POTA MAKEUPS and posing brand new poses, and IT'S STILL
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!
*** I never asked for "new" images for a classic film... I wanted them
to use/incorporate ORIGINAL photos/stills/posters (some foreign APES
posters would have worked) etc. for the new releases... Making the DVD
cases look like video-game packaging is bullshit when there is so much
original material at their disposal... FOX should be concentrating
their "imagination" in trying to get a decent movie together, not in
designing a DVD case to appeal to the gamer community... People have
got to know these aren't "new" films, they're classics and their
packages should reflect that... But, I've also heard that FOX is
selling the original 1951 "The Day The Earth Stood Still" with "new"
looking packaging so maybe that's where all their imagination went:
Trying to make vintage films appear like they were made today... I'm
not saying the work APEMANIA did was all bad, I do like the cover for
BATTLE compared to the others, but the new shots/designs are
too "slick"... Now if there were a new comic line or something like
that, then the style they used on the DVDs/cases would be more in line
with what it'd be: a new product with a new image. (And by "new image",
I mean new as in newly created pictures, etc. NOT "new image" as in the
bullshit they tried with pota2001 and their "giving it a new image" to
appeal to "today's audience".)
Anyway, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am for what
APEMANIA does as far as their restorations of original outfits and
their reproduction outfits are also cool... I also like that they try
to keep the original style of appliance applications alive, however,
their make-up is poor... You can say "What's the difference, it's all
appliances like the films used", while that may be technically true,
the make-up is NOT the same... Their makeups are highly lacking, and
the material they use looks too much like sponge... Their best ones are
their gorillas and even they're lacking compared to the originals, and
I do not like their chimps/orangs at all... ***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Frankly, I think Fox was also seeing how much APEMANIA charges to do
costumes and make-up because that new script has hit and they could get
it right this time!!!
*** You're kidding, right? 99% chance that APEMANIA just used their
regular APEMANIA troupe outfits for the covers/DVD shots (ie: They
didn't charge FOX anything for outfits, they were using their regular
performance gear which they then wore on the soccer mom show, etc.) If
FOX would choose to use APEMANIA for any film project, I'd hope they'd
tell them to improve their makeup applications, because as they sit
now, they're NOT film-worthy...
As far as APEMANIA doing costumes: Chances are if we'd get another
film, they'd probably not use the original style of ape clothes in the
film, so going to them to see about costumes would be pointless...
Plus, great looking as they are, their repro outfits are quite pricey
because they don't seem to have the facilities to mass produce them so
it wouldn't even be cost-effective for FOX to use them... Chances are
they could get them done at a lower price elsewhere. (Again, I'm not
saying their outfits aren't "worth" what they ask, I just can't see
them being able to mass produce what a film would need at an affordable
price and in a timely manner.)
And here's why APEMANIA appeared on the DVD packaging (and I'm sure I
could get an email from the source I heard this from sent here to
confirm this): The Marketing guy at FOX who had the "bright idea" of
placing them on the Rachel Ray show is also a friend of the guy who
portrays one of the APEMANIA apes (Zaius I think it is). The only
reason they used them on the DVDs and packaging is because the FOX
Marketing/PR guy is all buddy-buddy with one of their performers... It
had nothing to do with APEMANIA's credentials but the fact that one of
their guys knows someone at FOX. *** <.html

Yes, but so is the makeup for the TV series.
The makeup in general went downhill from the
first film to the last, with Roddy's jaw hanging off
his face in Battle and the TV show. I cringe every
time I see Apemania's Zira's neck show. Details!

*** True, the makeup on the TV series isn't always up to snuff, but
the principles came across pretty good most of the time (and yes, I even think
Galen did... What I don't like about Galen is the way he has too much hair: His
ears are virtually unnoticeable... )
Some of the guest apes were very well done, like Aboro... Even
Jaqueline Scott's appearance improved from "The Good Seeds" to "The
Surgeon"...
All I can say in the TV series defense is that they were under the
gun to get everything moving, so maybe some of the make-ups failed due to not
having enough time to do it as precisely as the artists would have liked...
APEMANIA on the other hand really has no pressures to start shooting and being
bugged with lines like "We're losing time here, we gotta get moving..." I don't
have any idea of why they're not where they should be
make-upwise...

Apemania has help keep POTA alive. Their
sculpting is good, make up is good, costumes are good. If you look at the
makes ups in the films and TV. After John Chambers stopped doing the
initial sculpting and applications, the quality went down. If you
look at the coloration, the apes had multiple colors for realism. By the
time of Conquest, Roddy's make up was nearly all one color and looked like
plastic. Apemania's quality is up to par with Beneath. Also Zira
never had a beard. Her collar went up high, but her neck was always
hairless.

While what "apefan" says is true, that it would have been great to
be able to pick the stuff up when it was cheap (i.e. original sale/"retail
price" rather than the price some of it goes for now on the secondary market),
I'm in the same boat as Hunter, and apparently you too Whitty: The stuff might
as well have been $100 if the money isn't/wasn't there...
Here's a cool calculator that shows prices adjusted for
inflation... The prices of most of the APES items in the ad(s) is pretty
comparable to what an equivalent item would be today...

1. A good script (obviously) but with more depth in charater and story like the originals. Not another chase and scream remake.
2. Makeup: Stick more to John Chambers' makeup design than Rick Baker's. Baker's was okay but nowhere near Chamber's design. And when the apes speak, let us hear what they have to say. And
not try to hear beyond the banana in their mouths as was the case with Rick's design.
3. The apes themselves: Make them as Roddy McDowall made them to be. Half Man/Half Ape and not the crazy wild monkeys that Burton gave us.
One of the biggest turn offs to Peter Jacksen's King Kong was that instead of making King Kong, he made to 40 foot silverback gorilla.

In defense of Apemania, again. John Chambers
used lacquer based paints for the base colors with rubber mask grease for
finishing. Apemania uses PAX. The foam latex is basically the
same. The film stock and filters gave the make ups a different appearance
in the original. As foe Baker's/Burton's apes---they are much more
accurate/realistic. Nearly ALL make up effects artist have done a POTA
appliance in their time. Most people can duplicate the look. The
"modern" lighting, camera, filters, film stock all add or change the look
of the make ups in film now.

Baker's was okay but nowhere near Chamber's design. And when the apes
speak, let us hear what they have to say. And not try to hear beyond the
banana in their mouths as was the case with Rick's design.
3. The apes themselves: Make them as Roddy McDowall made
them to be. Half Man/Half Ape and not the crazy wild monkeys
that Burton gave us.
One of the biggest turn offs to Peter Jacksen's King Kong was that instead
of making King Kong, he made to 40 foot silverback gorilla.
And for that I'd prefer to go to the zoo. :o)

In defense of Apemania, again. John Chambers
used lacquer based paints for the base colors with rubber mask grease for
finishing. Apemania uses PAX. The foam latex is basically the
same. The film stock and filters gave the make ups a different appearance
in the original. As foe Baker's/Burton' s apes---they are much more
accurate/realistic. Nearly ALL make up effects artist have done a POTA
appliance in their time. Most people can duplicate the look. The
"modern" lighting, camera, filters, film stock all add or change the look
of the make ups in film now.

Well my hope is
that they don't actually remake Conquest but that they use a new version of
it as a launching point for more movies. Retelling the story of how the Apes
take over makes much more sense as a 'first' movie. I would have thought that if
the original intent was to make a sequence of movies then to
start with something like Conquest would make sense.

I really enjoyed Ty's REVOLUTION series. You know what I would really like
to see..something that takes place between ESCAPE and CONQUEST....
I've always thought that the apes in CONQUEST got too smart, too fast. And
that Caesar definitely had some kind of telepathic control over apes of lesser
intelligence (kind of like Obi-Wan using the Force on the Stormtroopers).
What could have happened to the bodies of Cornelius, Zira and Milo after
they were killed? I conjecture that, after a standard autopsy (hey, maybe
someone would unearth some "ape autopsy" footage!) the bodies were put on ice.
Some years later, when Ape servitude proved to be a widespread and profitable
business, the genes of the apeonauts were used by Ape Management to breed more
intelligent apes -- easier to train. This, of course, was their undoing and
accelerated the take over of the apes.
Thus, sharing the same genetic code, gave Caesar a telepathic influence
over the simple-minded apes (this influence faded in BATTLE, since the apes had
become more intelligent over time.
I'm sure Patrick must have thought this trough already...

and 'Farewell To POTA'. On the first one they squash all the end
credits together, on the second one they give credits for each
episode, and they removed the episode title, director, guest stars,
etc, that had been shown after the opening credits. Not very
interesting really, but some might be curious. To me, the opening
theme sounds slightly different - more drums and piano I think?

Bill - there's definitely a very interesting story in
there!
Neil and I look at some options in our new comic "POTA
Begins" - very unoriginal in title but if it can be anything like BATMAN BEGINS
was to BATMAN for POTA, them who cares about having an unoriginal title?
:)
In BEGINS we take a recent news story about Stalin commissioning a
"Half ape, half man" army that is genetically manipulated to need less food and
be expendible. Our scenario has this experimentation being succesful
(while it is of course covered up to the general public) and....well, you'll
see.
This also explain why the apes look different (as John
Chambers makes them look) to normal apes, but in our story we do have some
remaining "normal" looking apes.
Our story is specifically place on the "linear" timeline
around 1000 years post Taylor's launch. We don't mention Brent and frankly
we will probably go in a direction where we would possibly even entirely IGNORE
the sequels.
But the PAST of this story is not Caesar, Zira and
Cornelius. IF Milo finds a ship, then he will create a BUTTERFLY EFFECT
and our story may be replaced with Caesar and Virgil etc....
Michael

"remake"... The Burton film is often referred to as a "remake" (even on this
groups home-page)... I see pota2001 referred to as a "remake" way more than
I see the "re-imagination" term attached to it... Just because the
"re-imagination" term is attached to pota2001 (and you didn't care for the
film), you do have to admit that IS a better term for it than "remake".

That's what I mean when I say a "remake" but you all know

I do mean a totally different

I'll be happy if the term"regurgitation" doesn't turn out to be appropriate. <.html

John Chamber knew that there are many layers
of variation as light penetrates skin and it shows
in his work. But many of the makeups since his
just look flat. Sure it saves time, but the extra
effort is worth it for the over all effect on screen.
