Or perhaps all Chief Defenders of the Faith take the name Zaius,

just as al Emperors, wether named Julius or whatever, are called

Caesar.  Given that the ape society is very Roman based that's a fair bet.

**** Being there is nothing ever said that would indicate Chief Councilor Zaius in the TV series is also (Minister of Science and/or) Chief Defender of the Faith, I find that a little hard to believe.

Okay, on  the "Mountain of the Delphi" record by POWER records, they call him "Dr. Zaius" after Galen says something about their "Minister of Science", but the fact that they incorrectly call him "Dr. Zaius" says that "Minister of Science" title is also null and void.

Not once on the TV series is he called Doctor, and being he is his own character, he never should be. ***

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it's just to have a familiar name that they did it.

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it’s just to have a familiar name that they did it.

That makes sense. Or perhaps it's a surname - Dr. Jim Zaius? But then
it's back to them being related again...

On the question of Zaius('s) titles - TV Zaius is the head of the ape
council, but is movie Zaius ranked below the 'President of the
Assembly'? Or does his 'Defender of the Faith' role give him extra
authority?

yes, 'Ursus' in the early scripts evolved briefly into 'Urso', before
becoming 'Urko' when it came to filming the first episode. As to why
they thought to change Ursus but keep Zaius, I don't know; certainly
the merchandising was often fairly casual about the distinction between

I read somewhere that they wanted to keep the movie characters alive from PLANET and BENEATH but couldn’t time it so another ship landed after the events of BENEATH (for, well, obvious reasons!).

yes, this mask was moulded from a TV gorilla face appliance.it is rather heavy.i put some professional facial make-up on top, to give it a more realistic look.bronzing powder, then placed in the centre of a fake fur cushion, and then in a presentation box.actually, the photo i sent, gives it a strange look of an egyptian pharaoh...so why not a gorilla-pharaoh?make a good story, for the likes of urko to look up to.....instead of the greatest ape.

If you ever read all the teen magazines during that time, they pushed Roddy as a sex symbol.  Even though he was in his 40s and all the other teen idols were between 16 and 30.  Under the make up Roddy was 20 yr old Galen.  I guess that's what they saw.

I most admit Logans Run was good, but there where other fantastic
American Sci-Fi series which i remember growing up that i loved, Land
of the Giants/ Time Tunnel / V the mini series/ Lost in Space and
some of our own British ( but not quite has good special effects Dr
Who/ Blake 7 to mention a few
But Planet of the Apes was the best of them all, i do wish they had
completed the second series of the T.V show, especially has it was
better recieved over here in the U.K than in the states.
One thing that may have been the problem was over kill with
everything from film / masks / money boxs / toys / jigsaws and the
rest , however it was harder obtained over here so it was still being
well recieved.

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it’s just to have a familiar name that they did it.

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it’s just to have a familiar name that they did it.

Same as in Australia !  There was VERY little for sale over here.

That’s one reason I took on collecting apes – because there is not much to collect (WRONG!).

*** Second series of the TV show? I wish they had been able to complete the first.
Seeing how huge the show was in the UK, the BBC or something should have obtained the rights to produce the show. And I think the show was more popular here than they let on... The CBS people wanted it gone from the get go, even on the BEHIND interview even Roddy says that it was dead in the water from the start. But, CBS held the reins, so they cancelled it. ****

One thing that may have been the problem was over kill with everything from film / masks / money boxs / toys / jigsaws and the rest, however it was harder obtained over here so it was still being

*** The APES merchandise sold well even after the show was canceled. True, there was a flood of items, and some of it really is crap, but I don't think it was ever overkill... I don't have the number in front of me, but at the time the merchandise sold I think a hundred million dollars worth. It wouldn't have sold that well if nobody wanted it. The idea was the merchandise was going to help promote the show and the show's popularity would sell more merchandise and going by the amount of things sold, that worked at least halfway: The merchandising sales were huge! Roddy was right when he said that they should have used some of the merchandising profits to help subsidize the making of the show. I mean it was sort of "free money" to FOX, so they could have used it to help fund a show which in turn would have sold more items, in the end lining FOX's pockets even more. ***

Yes i must admit , its not until you really start looking you see
just how much the Planet of the Apes series have actually done,
although some of it being rubbish ( how i wish i had some of that
rubbish ) probably worth a bit ?
Maybe has i said before but we where a little behind the states here
in the U.K.
I remember how much trouble as a kid ordering the U.K version of the
Marvel comics

*** Yeah, you might have some trouble with that, but your MEGO distributor (PALITOY) made great backing cards for the figures and there were also the UK only puzzles that had scenes from the TV series on them. And you also had the Annuals. So, you may have been behind in getting the stuff, but the TV series had more longevity over there which beats getting a comic on time. ***

In Burton's defence the make-up was fantastic , so was the costumes.
O.k Burton didn't do the make-up or costumes ,but they where good and
if only they had been able to do that back in the early seventy's.
The storyline was crap and i think most people could remember there
lines because they didn't have many.
Other that that it should have won an Oscar????????????

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it's just to have a familiar name that they did it.

If anybody is interested in purchasing a cast, it is available for $25 unpainted.  This includes shipping/handling (even for non-US residents).  The part of the neck which will accept the neckpost will need to be drilled out according to which figure you will use him for.  If you are interested, send me an e-mail.  If you want him painted, add an additional $45 since it takes me forever to paint one head to my satisfaction.  I am slowly going to make casts of the other apes I have sculpted available for purchase and will post as they become available.

Here is a photo of the original sculpt, which was an action figure head that I covered with Apoxie: http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/apecityoutfitters/ape027.jpg

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it’s just to have a familiar name that they did it.

Also, back then, their target audience was 25-40 and they were attracting teens and elderly.  If they redid the show now, they would WANT the kids and young adults.

But Planet of the Apes was the best of them all, i do wish they had completed the second series of the T.V show, especially has it was better recieved over here in the U.K than in the states.

*** Second series of the TV show? I wish they had been able to complete the first.

Seeing how huge the show was in the UK , the BBC or something should have obtained the rights to produce the show. And I think the show was more popular here than they let on... The CBS people wanted it gone from the get go, even on the BEHIND interview even Roddy says that it was dead in the water from the start. But, CBS held the reins, so they cancelled it. ****

One thing that may have been the problem was over kill with everything from film / masks / money boxs / toys / jigsaws and the rest, however it was harder obtained over here so it was still being
    well recieved.

I thought of something to ask Brian at Apemania!

I've always assumed the Caesar statue at the retired actor's home in LA was THE one from Battle but I noticed on Apemania's site that they attended the opening of the garden which leads me to think maybe they made it! Does anyone know for sure....?

          That’s it.

These are original – these are how I bought them here in Australia when I was a kid – about 14 or 15 so 1979/1980.

There was a find here in a Gold Coast shop and that’s why there’s a few still being sold.

These might have all come in a pack at one time....honestly I'm not sure if these are originals or repros....when I bought them they said they were originals but I've see a lot of them show up on ebay so I figured someone was making them again

this pic came from ebay ...in the package which looks old and "galen" is in a differnet place so maybe this uis Aussie!?

Why do you think he was named Zaius?

He sure plays a very similar character.

And why change URSUS to URKO…and why not name GALEN Cornelius?

I think it’s just to have a familiar name that they did it.

The story is on our site with pretty pictures of the restored statue now
residing in the Rose Garden at the MPTF.

Here's a link to our site page plus some of the text:(obviously we need to
update the text a bit because of the dates, so thanx for the nudge)

            <http://apemania.com/CaesarFund.htm>

            "Roddy McDowall
Motion Picture & Television Fund Raiser

One of Roddy McDowall's favorite charities was the
            Motion Picture & Television Fund.

He willed parts of his estate to the fund, and one of the items
the fund received was the actual CAESAR statue
used in the closing scene of
"BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES".

The fund brought the statue to us here at the APEMANIA workshop
            for restoration earlier this summer.
It will be permanently displayed beginning in September, 2001, in a
beautiful memorial rose garden that has been built (in Roddy's memory)
at the motion picture hospital and retirement home in Calabasas,
            California."

NOTE: January 2009, If you haven't heard, the facility has been seriously
            hurt by the current ression
and there is talk of it closing due to the fact that it cannot meet it's
            annual $10MIL operating costs,
mostly from the drop-off of private donations. The fate of the rose garden
and the Ceasr statue are not known yet.
We are hoping that current efforts to raise the much needed funds through
ralleys will keep the facility open.
If just a few multi-gajillionare induistry moguls would just reach for some
of their pocket change, the MPTF can be saved,
thus living up to it's theme, "Taking Care Of Our Own".

I dont remember that on Sci-Fi channel
Your right though that would be a fantastic days viewing but only if
the kids went out for the day!!!
If they would only show more of the old stuff , not just planet but
Logans Run as mentioned / Twilight Zone / Time Tunnel / Land of the
giants , although if they showed the five movies plus Burtons attempt
and the series and also early in the day the cartoon series that
would up a complete weekend viewing ( that would be heaven )

Yes, both of the original Lawgiver statues, and what's left of the courtroom bust (it's no longer a bust, but fragmentated) are all in private collections.

The Sammy Davis junior statue is owned by an actor friend of Roddy's, the other statue seen in a lot of publicity fotos with Dr. Zaius is owned by an collector in Irivne california (last I heard he was looking to sell it $30K)

The remains of the courtroom bust (which were in a collection in Florida for many decades) now resides in England .

                  And there you have it.

Have you looked at the video on potacollective.com. Those were taken
from my Rarities DVD, which was taken from the 1st-gen VHS tape
recorded by Cougar. The videos on Kass's site are considerably lower
quality that the ones on the DVD (and on potacollective.com).

I have that, too, but it's commercially available, so I've never
included it on the Rarities DVDs.

Well, if I didn't already have a mate and a young brood of children and I wasn't monogamous and 20 years younger, why not?  We'd have a bonobo good time!!

I don't think there's enough makeup in the world
to make an ape attractive.  Conversely, I don't think
you could make Kim Hunter unattractive, not matter
how much makeup you used.  That's the point I made.
