all these years later that still sticks in my head... ***

According to a few of my friends, I 've shown them
all 3 versions (Last Man on Earth, Omega Man , I Am Legend)they say ALL 3 are
boring. Myself, I LOVE Omega Man. I saw Soylent Green in the
Theatre. I loved it then, Ilike it now.

I will have to watch Last Man On Earth never saw
it
Ironically I saw I Am Legend before Omega Man
and i think both are great
and I actually like the Will Smith version the best
- its amazing graphics - almost gave me nightmares LOL
but the Omega Man has such a unique 70s mood to it
that it stands out on its own- very cool

In BATTLE when the Captain returns from tracking Caesar, MacDonald, &
Virgil, he describes the city to Kolp, he also mentions the orchards and
vineyards and says "Enough to feed hundreds"... The line is clearly overdubbed
when he says that...
Does anyone have a script to check if that was the original line or was it
a different amount (perhaps "thousands" as they say in the BATTLE book and
record set)... A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.

Omega Man scared me for years. And I saw that
on T.V. Last Man on Earth is creepy like Night of the Living Dead. I
Am Legend is an action movie. Even though I think Heston is overrated and
over acts, I think his 3 major sci fi movies work for him.

dislike them quite as much as it seemed when I reread my post, but I still
do find Omega Man boring in spots... As for Soylent Green, maybe it's not
crap, but I flashed back to the first time I seen it on a local TV
station. When they showed the commercial for it, I thought "That looks
cool!" but I was very disappointed and because of that all these years
later that still sticks in my head... ***

What
I Love... And Hate Feb 7 2009
By Shane Richie, Ex-Eastender And
Star Of Minder
TV: I love QI - I'm a big fan of Stephen Fry. I tape
those when they're shown on Dave, and I'll watch the new series. I'd love
to be on it but I don't know if I have the bottle.
You have to be
very sharp on that show and I'm not as sharp as I like to think. I hate
bad children's TV. I've become a connoisseur of kids' TV because of my two
year old and, unless it lives up to Lazy Town, everything is bad.
FILM: My favourite movie is the original Planet of the Apes. I've got
a massive collection of memorabilia from it. The wagon from the film,
that they threw Charlton Heston into, is in my front garden. And in my
office I've got a seven-foot gorilla with original prosthetics and
clothes. There-make didn't work for me.
HOLIDAY: We've just got
back from Lanzarote and had a ball. Everyone kept going on about it being
Lanza-grotty but the whole family went and we had a fantastic time. We
love New York, and the Maldives takes some beating. I'm also a Disney
World fan. I was disappointed by the Bahamas.
FOOD: I really love
shepherd's pie. My mum-in-law does the best pie ever. I'm afraid I'm not a
big fan of red cabbage.

Not true. He did it as a favor to Znauck.
Zanuck agreed to do the first one. Heston
even took his pay for Beneath and donated
it to his son Fraiser's school. He only agreed
to do it because they assured him they's kill
off his character. They said they couldn't
get financing without his name attached to
the project. So take your hat off to the man.
As weak as the sequels are, they'd be worse,
if they got made at all, if it hadn't been for his
efforts. He is the cornerstone of these films.

without Heston there wouldn't have been the budget if any to make the
first or second film.
The remaining three films i think the budget was a lot lower but fox
may have put up the money ( after all they made a few quid from the
first two films ).
Also even today there are many films that i dont think would have
gotten made if not getting a big named leading lady or man for the
role.
Its what they call a bargaining tool to get funding nothing new, and
if people think thats the only way Planet got made so be it, but
thank god it did.
Dont forget at that time most studio's wouldn't even touch it , like
many studio's Fox has made some rubbish films but has for Planet of
The Apes.
We must pay homage to Fox and Heston who was there from the start
when make-up was the only stumbling block, on can it or cant it be
done without everyone laughing.

It's simple. You tell me who could play the part?
Brando and Newman had been mentioned. But it
was Heston who stuck with the project until it had
found a home and got the greenlight. And without a
Hollywood heavyweight, you get a lightweight, or at
best a welterweight, light Franciscus. I can't see him
playing Moses, or even Taylor. Not the same flick.

I have been reading your info about Heston and the fact he dominated
the film and if it would have gone better or worse without him. One
thing i would like to make a point about if it wasn't for Heston and
Robinson doing the screen tests then i'm sure it would never have been
made at all. Fox where very un-sure if the makup could or would be
convincing enough, so we owe these dedicated actors and the make-up
artists our thanks for starters. They needed big name's to push the
film otherwise we would now be looking at P.O.T.A's has a B movie. I
dont need to mention all the names of all that where in the film but they
had a long history of film and theatre behind them. When it came to the
follow up they didn't need Heston he had already left his mark after all
he was the leading role??? The script writers could have wrote when Brent
eventually came face to face with bright eyes he could have seen him dead,
there are lots of ways the writers could have taken it( but they wanted
him in it ). The problem which came about in the follow up films in my
opionion was the reduced budget and less for every one that
followed. Mark --- In PotaDG@yahoogroups. com,

.htmlIn the script on Hunter's site Taylor is only in the beginning and
end, and Brent is in the main part, but they all survive the bomb,
which only destroys the mutant city & gorilla army. So clearly
Heston's initial demand was that he'd only be in a few scenes, having
him killed off must have been a later demand, closer to filming. It's
fair enough wanting his character killed off, he obviously didn't
want to make more than one ape movie, in fact it shows some integrity
on his part, but his later demands killed off the characters (and
careers?) of Franciscus and Harrison (I can't remember if Zaius was
in the mutant city originally). They would surely have been lined up
for another sequel? And those iconic sets and costumes couldn't be
used in any of the sequels either. Personally, I wish the Earth had
been left intact, and the Planet of Apes wide open as the setting for
countless new stories.

Looking at Felix Silla's site:

he seems quite proud of his Apes work. And he's got two POTA pics on
his gallery page that I hadn't seen before - the group shot of the

Off the top of my head, are Robert Lombardo (Marcus) and David Watson

Agreed – to get it on screen the
push came from Jacobs. Others joined the crusade but they were
essentially “passengers”. They didn’t sweat a lot…
But if Heston etc did that test film
without being paid for it, well that would be a bit of sweat I suppose!

Yeah but what we got in the Boulle book was not really
the Planet of the Apes as we know it was it? Sure it started the idea off
but Jacobs is the person who we owe the most to in my opinion.

hmm, not sure ? I get mine from John but we're both in the UK so not sure if he sends them out to other parts of the world.
I can give him an E-mail... but he should be around here somewhere.
Where does Neil get his from?

Not quite true; I posted Kass's announcement here after you asked. I

These days I buy mine from Kassidy Ray in the US.
I'm not trying to cause any
trouble or anything, and I could have misunderstood, but I believed that I
had an agreement for gratis copies of the magazine for life as 'payment' for all the artwork I was
doing for them at the time.
Unfortunately I never usually received a copy when it came
out and most of the time had to remind John of our
agreement in order to have a copy sent to me.
Then due to a
breakdown in my personal relationship with some of the Scrolls people I
decided it would be better if I just paid for the things myself
and preferred to deal with Kass at the
time.

.htmlRespectfully, Hunter, and for the cause of accuracy and not to drag
anything on, it is actually true.
Your response was not to the post about me asking for details on how
to get it but to one where I asked if it was out yet (Post #50302 )
Here's what I asked and neither Dave nor anyone responded and
explained how to get it as far as I can remember.
I used to distribute the "South Pacific" issues until there was a
falling out/misunderstanding. Personally, I'm over all that and I
thought everyone involved was over it and I would gladly offer to do
a "southern Hemisphere" distribution again if it's required.
I've been very nice here avbout the latest issue and, although I read
Neil's copy, I'd like to purchase a copy for myself.
I live in Australia and would require it sent via AIR MAIL (Rich
Handley can tell you all WHY!:) ).
How do I get a copy? WHo do I pay? DO I pay or is it how it
was "receive today, pay upon reciept"? Sorry I'm completely out of
touch with this but I am sincerely trying to mend broken bridges here
and I'm feeling like a complete fool for making any attempt at all
now.

True, but in either case, the details on how to get a copy were in the
post the post I forwarded. AFAIK, Kass is the only link outside of
John himself. I would suggest that you write to Kass and ask her
about the details of getting a copy sent Down Under.

Dave or John - if you feel like tellingme how Aussies and New

Again, if you want me to distribute copies for you I'm availabel and

No, I feel like I AM a dick....not I feel like I WANT one!

I've never been involved in the distribution side of things (nor would

sooner but I was out of town and had tons of emails to go through when
I got back.
I received my copy of Rich's Timeline book and wanted to comment a bit
on that. But it's so HUGE that it'll take me a while to read. But I
can say that it's as comprehensive as he could have made it, even
incorporating the William T. Quick prequel novels (The Fall and
Colony) published to the 2001 POTA novelization. (I know that may be
blsphemous to some, but I'm just illustrating that Rich left no stone
unturned.) My copy is a softcover. Weren't the originals Hardcover? I
would have prefered a hardcover, but the lulu site only indicates
softcover for sale.
Speaking of POTA books, I've done a bit of indirect POTA reading on my
own: "Homo Genus" which is a science fiction novel featuring talking
apes mentioned in some old threads here that *may* have been an
inspiration to Boulle. I managed to find a copy and recently read it.
I'll send another post with a review I wrote for the novel.

.html Here's a book review for "Genus Homo" that I wrote for an SF site.
Dario
---------------------------------------------------
Genus Homo (L. Sprague de Camp and P. Schuyler Miller - 1950)
As an avid Planet of the Apes fan and enthusiast, I enjoy searching
out all literature on the subject, including those not directly
associated with the series, but those whose themes mirror the POTA
scenario.
The novel Genus Homo, jointly penned by L. Sprague de Camp and P.
Schuyler Miller, and predates Pierre Boulle's Planet of the Apes novel
by more than a decade, fits that mold perfectly.
The story begins with a busload of people waking up after some sort of
geological event which knocked out all the passengers on the trip.
They find thenselves overturned and in the dark and as the slowly
awake to assess the situation, determine that they are in some
underground cave. They make their way to the top and immediately note
that they seem to be in some remote wilderness and thus must have been
displaced from the normal bus route they were on. They also see that
the climate has changed drastically from the time they were last awake
on the bus and discern that they must have been asleep or comatose for
a significant amount of time as well. As a number of passengers are
scientist of various disciplines, their suspended state is attributed
to a leaked gas that one of the scientists was transporting. As the
trek in search of civilization proceeds, they realize that they are
much further from civilization than can possible be explained a mere
displacement of the bus. After a few encounters with oversized animals
and heretofore unknown species, the group comes to realize that they
have somehow been projected into the far future.
The predicament of the group quickly leads to a requirement of a new
social order, and the protagonist of the novel, a chemist named
Bridger finds himself as a leader. He is quickly deposed, and just as
quickly reinstated as the group realizes that a fair solid thinker is
better than a coniving lawyer. The groups deals with issues such as
sex (a group of dancers are part of the mix), scientific analysis of
the situation (a group of scientists were on their way to a seminar),
and a few people who simply want to do as they please.
It is only after all these are explored does the group finally come
into contact with apes (supposedly evolved gorillas) that are
intelligent. A few humans are captured and placed into a zoo for a few
days when the captors realize that they are no mere animals. Another
ape is brought in evidently to test the intelligence of the humans.
The two groups soon establish communication through language and the
humansbegin to learn the post holocaust history of the earth which led
to the new order of 'civilization' while at the same time the apes
learn more about the past. While we never find out exactly why there
was a transition and what led to the downfall of mankind as the
preeminent species, we do know that it has been millions of years
since man last ruled the Earth, and almost all evidence of his time
has vanished. While technologically the ape civilization is a backward
one, they do have steam power, and with a disticnt lack of metals and
iron, they have advanced wood building skills as well as a much more
resistant strain of wood growth allowing them to have a far superior
wood manufacturing base.
We learn that there are other species of apes on other continents, and
that just like man before him, ape history is just as plagued by wars.
The novel ends with just such an escalation as the 'good' apes are
faced with an attacking force of baboons.
There are a lot of good points in the novel, but it is also
unsatisfying in many ways. The initial section dealing with the humans
just waking up is rather long and slow going. There a lot of human
characters for which the authors try to develop, but once the apes
come into the picture all that character development is just thrown to
the wayside. A brewing relationship between Bridger and one of the
female humans is carefully planned out and is then summarily addressed
by only a sentence or two in the very last paragraph. The apes
civilization is absolutely fascinating, but once the conflict with the
baboons comes into play, the novel concentrates on the stragegy and
climactic battle and ends the story there.
When it comes to determining whether Boulle could have read and been
influenced by Genus Homo, the answer is yes. In order to have read
Genus Homo, a french translation needed to be available for Boulle to
read. Genus Homo was first translated and sold in France as "Le règne
du gorille" in 1951, well before Boulle penned "La Planete des
singes". (Other editions came out in 1982 and again in 1984). <.html

There seems to be illustrations of various things (comic book covers etc) in the columns that I wasn't expecting.
I originally was skeptical about the depth and length Rich went to, but upon consideration…..if we are free to make of it what we will, then the more the
better.

It sounds like the idea to do extras on the
Blu-rays was a last minute decision, and at the same time there were rumors that
they found the original "Conquest". My guess is "Conquest" DID fall into their
laps, maybe while they were looking for something else. And they decided to
build a release around it. It seems to me things get found when you're not
looking for it.

You could be right
Mike.
When Ken Taylor
worked for FOX he had an interesting take he said if it wasnt going to
directly make money, Fox would not do anything. He said the deleted
scenes and bloopers etc would probably be in storage but not easy to find,
requiring time and money to locate them and therefore it would be unlikely
they would do so unless something actually fell in their
laps.
Again, I dont know
but I DOUBT unrated Conquest FELL IN THEIR LAPS so again I believe they went
out of their way to find it to get Joe Public to recognize
CONQUEST.

As far as bloopers
from the films, one could guess since they wanted NOTHING from PLANET to be
seen as "laughable", maybe they destroyed any PLANET screw-ups, not wanting to
risk anything getting out that shouldn't at the time. The same could maybe be
said for BENEATH, where they weren't so concerned about getting laughed
at (since PLANET was a hit), but to protect the Mutants whom they even kept
under wraps in the NATO film... Again, this is all just one possible scenario,
I don't say I even neccessarily think it's the case...

Heh heh--yeah, I made it about as complete as I could possibly make
it. :) Please feel free to pass along any feedback you might have,
Dario, once you plow through it. Incidentally, we're about to start
making it available on Amazon.com--possibly tomorrow, in fact--for
those who might have had trouble with the Lulu ordering system. The
Amazon version will essentially be the same--just slightly smaller in
dimension, due to the different printing specs, and we've also added a
tab system along the side of the book, to make it easy for readers to
locate a specific section.

Unfortunately, no, we don't--it was something we'd considered, but it
turned out to be too cost-prohibitive, and we didn't think there'd be
a big enough demand for it. If enough people want one, though, it
might be something worth looking into... <.html

Heston suggested they blow up the
Earth but it wasn't a demand. I think the main thing, as people like Mort
Abrahams have said, is they wanted "shock" value, like the end of the original.
So it was Heston's idea (or he takes credit for it) but they pretty much all
figured it was the last movie. So I think blowing up the world was agreed on as
the ultimate shock. Though didn't I read that Ted Post was pissed off when he
saw Heston brag about it in "Behind"? So I guess the director wasn't on the same
page.
Linda Harrison told me at the time she was
looking forward to moving on and tired of playing Nova. She'd done all she could
do with her and had a TV series to go to ("Bracken's World"). So nobody was
looking at "Beneath" the way we do now, what would be best for the next sequel.
They weren't planning any.

In the script on Hunter's site Taylor is only in the beginning and end,
and Brent is in the main part, but they all survive the bomb, which only
destroys the mutant city & gorilla army. So clearly Heston's initial
demand was that he'd only be in a few scenes, having him killed off must
have been a later demand, closer to filming. It's fair enough wanting his
character killed off, he obviously didn't want to make more than one ape
movie, in fact it shows some integrity on his part, but his later demands
killed off the characters (and careers?) of Franciscus and Harrison (I
can't remember if Zaius was in the mutant city originally). They would
surely have been lined up for another sequel? And those iconic sets and
costumes couldn't be used in any of the sequels either. Personally, I wish
the Earth had been left intact, and the Planet of Apes wide open as the
setting for countless new stories.

I think the budget cuts effected more the gorilla army maching through the city, more than anything else. They do this long march through the desert only to find themselves back to where the scouts found the passage
(clearly the budget cuts on the film effected more post nuclear scenes and sets to be built).
As for the Alpha Omega bomb. There's a reason why the bomb was in the film to begin with. Clearly the bomb was meant to be used from day one.
If not, why else would it be in the movie?
At least that's my take on it.
