Rich – can you please knock us up a quick time line?  J

Seriously, that’s what we need is a time line showing when whom is claiming to have had the idea!

Well if there is a way of verifying when Don Peters did his concept sketches and paintings and if they were done before Serling's scripts it may well be proof that it was originally Peters' idea.

I myself believe it was a combination of people that came up with it, which ones though? Like you I don't think we'll never know for sure.

But I've always believe that the moment had the Serling 'touch', the
type of ideas he had written so many times in his writing carreer and it
was very much like something that he would come up with. That's why I've
always believe that it was Serling's idea, although there will never be
indisputable proof of who really came up with the idea.

Hallmark had Planet of the Apes Valentine's Day cards featuring the
picture of Taylor kissing Zira & when you open it, it plays some of
Jerry Goldsmith's score with the caption "Put your stinkin' paws on me,
you damned dirty ape!" Even had a cool little picture of the Icarus on
the back.

The scene is one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history so if
whoever really came up with it would get a lot of praise. As to why
there are so many claiming to have come up with the idea, I think its a
little bit 'hollywood', false memories and even outright lies. Even the
lies are interesting. Suppose Serling did come up with the idea. He died
just a few years after the movie. Without an established credit for the
scene, anyone who knew it was him could lay claim. I'm not claiming the
others are liars. Just a thought.

Apemania did most of the work (the main paint job).  I just added some minor color with rubber mask grease paint.  Here is before and after:

It could be a mixture of truth though, supposing one person came up
with the concept, another with the design, etc.
How likely is it, though, that Peters, doing the concept art, would
be inventing random scenes not set out in Serling's script? I don't
know how these things work, but surely he would have had some
parameters to work within? Instructions from Serling or possibly
Jacobs?

Where did you get the artwork for the home page pic (Neil?), I haven't
seen some of them. I haven't yet got an idea of what kind of artwork
was featured in the North American version of the blu-ray set.

Funnily enough, in Pendreigh's book, Peters is adamant that he came up with it himself with no prompting from anyone else. So who do you believe?

How likely is it, though, that Peters, doing the concept art, would
be inventing random scenes not set out in Serling's script? I don't
know how these things work, but surely he would have had some
parameters to work within? Instructions from Serling or possibly
Jacobs?

I really don't remember! I think some of them may have been screen captures from something but definitely not all of them. Mostly stuff found on the net ages ago that I put together as one picture for some now long forgotten reason.

Umm...Yeah!
The "party" wasn't quite what we expected.  My son and I got there early, so we walked along Hollywood Blvd. for an hour.  As we were walking we saw a van unloading Palms and bamboo "jail" walls.  I said to my son, "this is gonna be bad!"  Then we saw the scarecrows; bamboo Xs with burlap.  We decided to go up.  It was an 18+ party and my son forgot his I.D.   We go upstairs and the girl at the "check in" said, "They just stuck me here.  I don't know anything about what's going on."  Never checked our names or I.D.s.  The place is EXTREMELY small.  We then see Zaius, Ursus, and Cornelius.  things are looking up.  We go into an enclosed room with a movie screen.  The movie is supposed to start PROMPTLY at 4:30.  This room is ALL windows.  It was 4:00 and still sunny outside.  The apes are walking around and talking to people.  I see an Ursus cake and go over and take a couple of pics of it.  I go to get pics of the apes and my batteries died (Sorry).  Soon more people show up.  It seems everybody knows everybody, except us.  We're feeling extremely out of place.  I then hear someone telling someone else that there are people here for Michelle and people here for the apes.  It turns out this was a surprise birthday party for someone named Michelle who is a POTA fan and they hired the 3 apes.  My son said we should leave.  I still wanted pics but my camera was dead and my son's phone didn't have a flash (other than the screening room, the place was darker than most clubs).  I wanted to wait until I saw someone who was there for the apes.  Then, everybody's "FAVORITE" authority on POTA walks in like he is the main attraction.  At this point, I'm disappointed, feeling VERY awkward and out of place, and no way to take pics...so we left at 4:45.  By the way, the movie did start at 4:30, but we couldn't see a thing, except in the bar area, where they had 2" screens all over-the place.  And the raffle prizes...BluRay discs.  After that fiasco my son said, "At least we can say we went to a Hollywood party."  Maybe someone else that went has a different take on it, but that's my 2 cents.

Oh yeah.. In case anyone wants to know about the make up...like any foam latex make up, it looks good in person, but not GREAT like on the screen.  And after doing make up for all my years AND doing my own Apes make up, it still excites me to see GOOD apes in costume--LIVE!

One suggestion, Jess.
Don't paint your edges until after
you put it on.  It make applying it
easier and the makeup won't crack.

Awww...I was hoping it was going to be way better than that.  At least you had your son with you and that made it less awkward.  So I guess that's what the "surprise" was...a surprise party for Michelle.

I don't have that issue, but I wish I did. ;)
These are great fakes. And this one features more original art that
I've never seen.

Thanks Graham!

Not a different experience, I just made the most of it. Did some interviews, enjoyed looking at the ladies, and my camera didn't die. And I got an excellent Doors book real cheap down the street. So my glass was half full.

Dear Jessica,

The Zira/Apemania piece looks great. Try the real stage powder as this blows off easier and seals it properly.
Max Factor or other stage brands you can get for about £5.00 so $10.00 in the US?

I took an o/o brush and painted the very fine lines in with brown grease paint, before I powdered and this seems to work
for Caesar.  Can't wait to see you in the whole get up. I may be going to a Sci Fi Ball in the summer so will be getting the full gear on and will send pictures.

Hope you are well

John

      I’m not sure.

The claw has always fascinated me – I assumed it was supposed to be a fossil of a claw anyway.

But looking at these sets there seems to be a whole lot of artsy sculptures scattered randomly too!

Excellent work as usual, G! What was the inspiration behind it...an unpublished story?

Thanks about John Adams...it did turn out pretty well I think!

The way I thought about it -- the ape science is,
like their culture & society, very rudimentary. For
years we had T Rex standing like Godzilla in all
the museums.  Bones in the wrong place, wrong
animal.  I thought maybe they put dino bones in

No real background story Tim, just the fact that I'm doing this little "project" of fake comic covers with the idea of having them from different years.

(At least that's the idea, I've not got a clue if they look like that or not)

I should do one "from" the 90s next as so far they've been all from mid 70s early 80s.

May be Michael and Neil can do the story ;)

I just realised that I do sort of have a splash page done in the style of Alcala.
In an early issue, Scrolls did a fun spoof about a British company taking over the TV series and doing a second series of the show. To make it appear authentic various pieces of artwork etc. were said to have turned up over the years supporting the story and one was an Alcala splash page for a new UK comic based on that TV show. I drew a picture in Alfredo's style as best I could and It was half inked and half pencils.
I have since done a fully inked version and removed the image of a new astronaut (who was from the 'new' episodes) from the background, so I do actually have a page done in his style:

That description is a bit misleading! I have this comic and it is not really "a parody of "Planet of the apes" TV show" at all. It's actually a long running comic about a couple of characters who have adventures in different places and times and this issue just cashes in on POTA as they are not really on the Planet of the Apes they just think they are.

About the only apes featured are the one on the cover and a couple of panels of the first page where 2 cavemen are watching TV and there are 2 shots of the screen with POTA ape heads on them, one of them being Urko.

If the person who just paid that amount for them is a POTA fan hoping for some long lost TV series comic story I suspect they will be mightily peed off!

Yeah, I was there when they filmed the cornfield thing ("Jay and Silent Bob"). The thing I remember most about it was how hard it is to get horses to hit their marks with rifles going off. Hadn't really thought about that before. Must have been a pain for the POTA TV show. And also the makeup guys were talking about the early POTA2001 makeups which had leaked to the internet. It was like January 2001.

Interesting Eric McCormack reaffirming his POTA love.....like the interview where he talked about his puffy shirt.....
What is this from? The remake DVD? or was it taped from TV in 2001?

I remember that. Some comic book website got a hold of them and placed advertisement quotes with the pictures.
That was so crazy. I think I still have those images on disc somewhere.
