I knew someone who was involved in the makeup. So I hung around in the makeup trailer and then we all drove to the location. I've got some cool pics I'll send to Al or something. They were pull over masks. Kevin Smith wanted to keep the ape leader's head. But they spent a lot of time filming it and didn't use much of it.

How did you get on the set Jeff?  Do you know someone?

Nah.  It's not that hard. You have a couple different
blanks for film.  Flash & Smoke. There isn't that much bang to it.
In fact if it's an automatic the barrel has to be plugged for the action
to work.  There's a little hole to let the smoke. or flash, out.  The sound
is dubbed in later. And Stunt horses are rock solid.  Nothing phases them.
Being a low budget movie they probably used real blanks and ordinary horses.

Well, they made noise on "Jay and Silent Bob" and it took forever to film the horses.

Any chance we could get a comic or to Kevin Smith? Being a POTA fan
AND a comic fan I'm sure he'd be blown away by some of Neil's stuff.

Here's a fun challange(!) for the blu-ray generation: I was looking at
my Beneath DVD to see if I could make out any of the names on the
mutant leader busts in the corridor. Yes I know they're all called
Mendez, but I wanted to try to get captures of any of the busts that
were identifiable. The only name I could clearly read was 'Mendez X',
but some of the others are on film just not very well lit, etc. If blu-
ray is as good as I'm told I would expect someone would be able to read
a few more of them??

In an early issue, Scrolls did a fun spoof about a British company taking over the TV series and doing a second series of the show. To make it appear authentic various pieces of artwork etc. were said to have turned up over the years supporting the story and one was an Alcala splash page for a new UK comic based on that TV show. I drew a picture in Alfredo's style as best I could and It was half inked and half pencils.

I have since done a fully inked version and removed the image of a new astronaut (who was from the 'new' episodes) from the background, so I do actually have a page done in his style:

Here's a fun challange(!) for the blu-ray generation: I was looking at
my Beneath DVD to see if I could make out any of the names on the
mutant leader busts in the corridor. Yes I know they're all called
Mendez, but I wanted to try to get captures of any of the busts that
were identifiable. The only name I could clearly read was 'Mendez X',

Yeah fair enough, seems obvious, but I'd like to get good screen
captures of the past mutant leaders, and in fact I'm able to get
reasonable ones off the DVD, I just can't see which name is which. If

Now THAT's interesting, as Adventure told the story of Mendez X. I
wonder if the writer chose him because his was the bust most visible on film.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I want to compare it to the comic to
see if they look alike. I'll upload that pic.
Just at a first glance though, it's quite possible the busts are all
identical, just coloured differently (bronze, silver, red...) and put
on different pedestels to make them look individual.

No, it wasn't Malibu. Hopefully I still have the location someplace.

    Mark,

When I get to it, I'm going to post photos in progress.  It's pretty straight-forward.  The only difficult thing would be to sew the edging, but if you can sew a pillow case you can sew this backpack.  I haven't found the perfect material yet, but I'm on the look-out.  Also, I need to find something soft yet light that would help keep its boxy shape.  I haven't encountered that material yet but every time I am in the craft store I look for something that would work.  Maybe I should check out the hardware store.  I'm looking for a soft plastic like the ones you find in bendable binders...but need it big enough.  This would hold the shape and yet be light enough.  I don't want to feel like I am carrying a brick if the backpack were still empty.

Yes, Michael---late or barely skating in...that's me all right!!

    Jess.

I created a new thread over at the Sideshow forums.  Check it out...

Hats of to you jessica i dont know where you find the time with
work , kids , mego and 1/6 scale model making and getting Zira ready
for your night out and im forgetting back pack.
The frame for the back pack could it be done with wire ( thick that
you would put up to keep sheep in with) and material canvas would be
    the best option?

Wow!!  My translucent Kryolan anti-shine powder came today.  That was fast!!  And...I can also use it to deaden the shine when I paint up my action figures.  BONUS!!

I will definitely bring a digital camera.  I only have to sew the chest pocket behind the hieroglyph for a notepad, and MacGuyver a pen with some Apoxie...and I think that's it as far as tweaking my costume.  The moment of truth comes on February 28.  It's been a long 35 years of waiting to get my ape on.

I've sewn deep pockets in my brown underdress for keys, my ID, cash (and my plastic nemesis--I will try not to use that while at the con)...

Unfortunately, I have to carry a purse for the extra stuff I need for touch-ups and for my liquid nutrition.

So, in a nutshell, Jessica's gone to the Forbidden Zone.  Family is dismayed at the level of effort I put into my obsessions, but whatever.  I am here to have fun.

You see I remember this, hence the suggestion !!!

I thought the "character sheet" of sketches were spot on.

I wasn't sure the splash was "pure" Alcala (I think you'd used a similar pose for a Virdon pic used for the TV audio CD which got me thinking...)

It was the small article on the "New" TV comics that had me doubting the story on the aborted second season.

There was a sketch page shown and said to have "similarities" to early Dave Gibbons which set off all kinds of alarm bells not because the work did or didn't't look like Gibbons, just at that stage of his career ('75 / '76) for various reasons Gibbons wouldn't have done work for Marvel UK

(One of them being Marvel UK, at that point, as separate company from the US, didn't really exist. All work was produced by the US, covers, splash pages etc. The only work done in the UK at that time was the letters page for each of the weeklies. It was a couple of years latter that they were set up as a truly independent UK company under Dez Skinn. The chances of Marvel US hiring a UK artist was unlikely, after all Herb Trimpe was dragged out to draw Captain Britain Weekly in '76 not a UK artist and all the work for that had been produced in the US )

    Mark,

Wire would be an option, but it will add some hefty weight. And any type of duck fabric (heavy canvas) would do.
I just want the right color, because I hate adding dye to fabrics.  It took me 20 years to find green fabric for Zira's dress because that is such an odd green.  I'm sure I could have purchased the right weight duck fabric dyed it appropriately and have had Zira's outfit sooner, but this was long before the glory of the internet (where I have learned most of what I need to do to make my figures work).

The frame for the back pack could it be done with wire ( thick that

    the best option?

Well, the green I found matches the green from the Escape movie...I still haven't found that other green with the browns/oranges.  I really love that brownish green, especially the one she wears right before they go to the cage of humans...or the one she wears at the beach...but I have not found it yet.

Have you also noticed that her chestpocket also has a separator for the pen/pencil and the notepad?  Makes sense...so that the writing instrument doesn't fall inside the pocket.

I think it's the same one, just in daylight.
Possible not, however.  She may be wearing
a different one for court.  They only way to tell
would be the scene where they go outside to
identify Landon.  I'm sure there was more than
one for shooting.  They always have backup

Hollywood said Kim Hunter # 1 on it.

Not that I know of. Just had a look at my CD art and I can't see the pose anywhere (I also checked to see if I'd used it in Going Home, but again nope.)
If I remember rightly it was based on one of the TV show cards where they are walking down a road.

Hi Mark, they don't exist, not in in a physical sense anyway, just as files on my PC

I paint the picture then start working on the design of the covers all based on cover designs from the mid to late 70s (so far).

Then with the aid of photo shop, draw / add  all the ageing ,rips tears, creases etc

(I particully like the faded "All new" sticker on the #2) and  generally try and make them look as real as poss.

A version of one of the other paintings used on "Fake comic" #1 was used on the  cover for Michael's and Neil's "Going Home"

I'm not sure if they would have designed a ball-point pen or not, but lead seems the more accurate option.

That's a good question, and one I'm not sure anyone on
the groups would know.  Usually there are at least three
sets of wardrobe.  Two on the set -- the one the actor is
wearing and one for back up, in case something happens
during shooting. The 3rd is back at wardrobe being cleaned.

If photography was available they sure didn't have a clue because in
a T.V episode ( The Deception ) Zaius is holding a photo of alan
virdon with wife and son and says " how do they do that ".
So it looks like they dont have the ability to take photo's and in
the film Battle for the planet of the apes they go underground and
watch historical documents on video ( they had never seen this
        either ).

I have owned seven lambrettas in my youth but i was not a mod, i was
        a skinhead.
Next you will say that the police where mod's , they where also new
        wave.
And yes the jam where pop music also .
Pop music ( meaning ) popular music, well they where popular with
eton rirfles, going underground and thats entertainment.
Paul has said many things in the past , some of which he regrets some
of which he has been miss quoted, and yes sometimes it helped to
called mod's to benifit there back pocket.
The Who , Small faces, The Animals to mention a few are the original
        mod's.
What where Mod's ( people who listen to popular music )that is why
the vespa and lambretta , mini skirt and two tone suits, the list is
        endless.
Also the real mod's where in the sixty's , call them what you will in
the eighty's but it was a revival not original.
Next you will be saying that the 2001 Tim Burton film was a original
        P.O.T.A film .
This was a revival also but with mixed revues.

I was going to say that the photographer might just be re-enacting
some obscure hunting tradition without actually being able to print
photos or even knowing the true purpose of a camera, but then there's
the photo in Beneath, as you say. I've seen that in the publicity
shots but does it appear onscreen? Bit of an oversight to change ape
society to a medieval-type but still having a camera.
On the question of ape technology, they're clearly capable of making
guns, and I think making a scalpel would be easier to master than the
surgery it's used for. But they're probably struggling to recreate
the ancient artifacts they've found. The human blacksmith in the TV
series might be a clue too - humans could have continued to work
metal for some centuries, though not by the time of POTA of course.

He's certainly got that 'up to no good' look about him, hasn't he!

Other than the columns they are mounted on, the busts in that
image appear to be identical. If memory serves, in the movie they
had different finishes. I seem to recall one being yellow (gold?)

Pat Tilton had the idea - which I very much liked - that the Mendez
dynasty were essentially clones. 'Blanks' that were stored until such
time as the existing Mendez wore out and his mind could be 'dumped'
        into a new, fresh body.

        Pat?

Thanks Dave, for showing us your bust.
Great picture, I hadn't seen that one before. Is he swapping the name
plates around just to confuse us?

But, in the TV series, Wanda is wearing glasses, yet in PLANET they're "amazed" at what Taylor is telling them about the remains of the glasses he seen in the cave... Now you could easily say that they might have known what glasses are and were just surprised that Taylor knew what they, as well as the rest of the artifacts, were. Or you could guess it was an oversight on their part to allow Beverly Garland's suggestion that Wanda wear glasses... Subject: Re: Heston/BENEATH
            .html
Think of the different scripted endings for PLANET -- including
Taylor being killed by the gorillas, rather than being still alive in
front of the Statue -- and then consider this: When they were making
BENEATH, they wanted it to have as shocking and as controversial an
ending as they could... and when it was suggested that they have the
entire planet blown up (killing all the Apes, Mutants, Humans --
everybody), they seized on that idea and ran with it.

It's my understanding that Heston thought up the idea of detonating
the Bomb, as a riff on the ending of "THE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI"
(where Col. Nicholson, as he's dying, falls on the detonator that
blows up the bridge spectacularly). Interestingly, it is only in the
FILM version of "KWAI" that the bridge blows up: in Boulle's novel,
Nicholson prevents the bridge from being destroyed, as part of his
[i.e. Boulle's] absurdist take on Mankind. I wonder if Heston had
read the novel, or if he assumed that the film's bridge-blowup finale
was a "faithful" rendering of the novel's finale?

I don't think that Heston had the 'pull' to force his ending-of-
choice on Ted Post & the folks at Fox. He signed a contract to
reprise his role as Taylor, hoping they'd kill him off at the
beginning (etc etc). When they suggested having him disappear in the
beginning and then show up at the end, he said, "Okay, fine,
whatever..." (or, words to that effect). There were a number of
suggested endings -- including the Bomb being detonated, but only to
kill off the Mutants and the Ape Army, leaving Taylor & Brent (and
Nova?) alive outside the blast radius, with the hope of building a
            peaceful future for Mankind, etc.

They introduced the Bomb... the Bomb-worshipping telepathic
Mutants... the Ape Army invading the Zone for revenge against
the "incident" involving the Gorilla Scouts...

I think they chose the BEST ending available to them. An ending that
acted like a vicious slap-in-the-face to the audience, an attempt to
wake them up in a dangerous time to the reality of the dangerous
condition the world was in, regarding the potentiality of a real
            nuclear war.

BENEATH was a viciously satirical allegory about present-day
situations. I think it was appropriate for them to depict the End of
the World. Better to see it in a work of fiction -- as a cautionary
tale to warn us all -- than to say nothing and let the madness go on
            unopposed.

Remember how Cornelius told Zaius that whoever made the artifacts
he'd found at the earliest strata (the Eyeglasses, False Teeth,
Artificial Heart-valve, etc), they had "a knowledge of METALLURGY"?

In order for Cornelius to say that of the long-dead artificers of
those artifacts, it follows that Ape society in 3955 or 3978 or
Whenever has a knowledge of Metallurgy all its own, and has had it
for centuries. As Lucius points out, Knowledge has stood still for
the Apes: they are at the same phase of Civilization they achieved
centuries earlier, without advancing further. Zaius and his line have
kept Ape civilization from advancing into the "dangerous" area of
advanced technology, the kind that will annihilate civilization, just
            as Man did to himself.

About the only advance that the Apes made after 3085 was their own RE-
INVENTION of the Camera. Zaius was willing to allow Carsia to pursue
her plan to use Leuric to create a Glider, thinking that such an
invention might be of benefit for the Apes. He wondered how the photo
of Virdon and his wife & son had been made... sounding rather curious
about it. He probably would've been willing to have the High Council
do a budget appropriation for a scientific study on the feasibility
of replicating Photography, using that photograph of Virdon's family
as part of a "back-engineering" project. Maybe that's how Apes
succeeded in re-inventing Photography: Zaius (in 3085) started an
official scientific research endeavour to create the Camera (etc).

Considering that the "camera obscura" idea has been around since the
time of Leonardo da Vinci, it's not all that impossible for a clever
ape scientist to study Optics using various lenses, etc etc, to see
about how to project an image onto a special "shadow-capturing" type
            of "paper".

If the Apes were anything like us Humans, it was probably a simian
pornographer who eagerly sought out a way of making Photography work.
            Monkey porn!
