Well, you seem to think that ANSA might've had different "duties" for
women, as opposed to NASA, which was an all-male show as far as their
roster of astronauts goes. My point was that the make-up of the 4-
person crew depicted in PLANET -- ignoring the sequels for the
moment -- has a definite power structure related to the PURPOSE of
the colonization mission:

1. Taylor is the COMMANDER [Landon calls him "Skipper"]
2. Landon is the PILOT ["Golden Boy" i.e. Top-Gun-type]
3. Dodge is the SCIENTIST [who would walk naked into a volcano, etc]
4. Stewart is the BREEDER [Taylor calls her the "New Eve"]

The ONLY reason a woman was included in this ANSA mission to colonize
an alien world was because MEN CANNOT MAKE BABIES WITHOUT WOMEN. If
they COULD, they wouldn't bring a female along. They NEEDED a woman
to bear the children.

And you'll notice that there's no concern for the "nuclear family"
or "family values" or any of that. There is not gonna be any strict
MONOGAMY on this expedition. Taylor explicitly says that Stewart
was "to be the New Eve... with OUR hot-and-eager help, of course..."

She was to be impregnated by all three male astronauts, in order to
populate their new world. There was no female on Professor Antelle's
ship in Boulle's novel, so this detail is specifically intended for
the film's scenario.

Notice that Taylor also referred to her as "our LOVELY Lieutenant
Stewart" [to Landon] and "... now there was a LOVELY GIRL..." [to
Nova]. He refers to her as "the most precious CARGO we brought
along..." -- as if the three astronauts ["we"] were the active
members of the crew and she were a passive OBJECT ["cargo"],
a "thing". Her value consists of being "LOVELY" and being "FERTILE".

We're not only dealing with the theme of American Imperialism here,
folks, we're also dealing with GENDER ROLES. The role of women in the
planned society -- or at least, its initial start-up phase -- is to
be a "thing" to be "used" by the dominant Males of the power
structure in order to perpetuate the power-relationships indefinitely.

Stewart's death prevents that long-term Plan from happening. At least
until they find REPLACEMENT females [Nova and the other women in the
tribe of mute savages] belonging to a group who will be ruled in six
months, if Taylor has anything to say about it.

Look at the role of the Ape and Human females in the TV series. They
could've had a 4-person crew, with Jonesy dying and THREE surviving
astronauts: Virdon, Burke, and a WOMAN. Virdon's mission, evidently,
didn't involve colonizing Alpha Centauri, so... NO WOMEN NEEDED,
thank you very much!

Aside from Dr. Kira, is there one female PROFESSIONAL depicted in the
TV series who isn't evil in some way? All the female roles in the
show tended to be DOMESTIC ones: wives, daughters, widows, etc. Kira
is a surgeon, a profession that -- one might say -- is an extension
of the Nurturing Healer that goes hand-in-hand with the female role
of Mother.

But Wanda and Carsia? They are the ONLY female roles that involve
POWER of any kind... and both of them ABUSE that power. Might there
be a message in this? Females are not to be trusted with power unless
it is the power to Heal?

Just a thought...

Patrick

We must live really sheltered lives here in Australia Patrick because I
have 4 daughters and I've NEVER had to defend their lives! If it comes
to it of course I'll use whatever means I have to protect them, but
what are the odds? Really - what ARE the odds?

To live your life with a gun at your side in case you might one day
have to defend your children is more like a death in itself. And I
also lived in the USA for a year in 1983/84. I walked BROADWAY at 1am
and was asked by a black gut in an alley for a light. I walked up the
dark alley (something my mother SPECIFICALLY warned me never to do) and
I lit the fattest joint I've seen to this day and spoke to this man
(who thought all Aussies were racist because he saw a David Bowie
clip "Let's Dance where an Aboriginal scrubs the streets - something
that I explained in reality does NOT happen!).

I have no idea why he called me up that alley but I had no weapon other
than my wits and I reckon if I did have a gun I might have just shit my
pants and shot the guy when I realised where I was and what I was doing.

I survived most every city in the USA without a gun.

Michael

Talk about stupidly put, Patrick, then how the fuck come so many
other fucking nations are going just fine and have NOTHING like the
amount of murders you have in the USA?

Are the UK governments and the Aussie government dictatorships?

No Patrick and your argument is ridiculous. Sorry buddy but it's
just nonsense.

The difference is Patrick that by the time someone gets a gun
license, waits 30 days to get the gun, and puts some time between
when they are feeling murderous, most people will say "what was I
thinking?". They won't carry out the murder.

You can also copulate someone to death Patrick (you seem be doing
this to me right now!) but the most effective way to kill a person is
with a GUN. You pull it out, aim and shoot. Pull a knife on someone
and you may very well get it kicked out of your hand and shoved in
your eye. Guns are VERY good at what they are made todo - KILL.

If phones develop to be a perfect killing machine the same would
apply.

Cool story!

In truth, no one in America needs a gun for survival, aside from gang
members--even here in the United States. And I think you'll find that
the vast majority of us feel that way as well. I'll never understand
the arguments that the NRA gives for people having guns in their home.

Except for this.  But I guess these facts are lies too.

Right to Carry reduces crime. States that approve right to carry experience a significant decline in violent crime rates after the right to carry laws take effect. According to FBI crime statistics states implementing right to carry experience:
An 8 percent drop in murder rates
A 7 percent drop in aggravated assaults
A 5 percent drop in rapes
A 4.9 percent drop in all violent crime
A 2.2 percent decline in robberies.

Not sure what you mean.  We do have gun laws.  Of course
criminals don't follow them.  But they're criminals, why would
they?  Cross the border of what?  Canada?  Mexico?  Another
state?  Here you can go to Walmart.  Guns and ammo are in
Sporting Goods.  Not handguns though.  There's a background
check and a waiting period for that so you to a gun store.  If
you want a permit to carry you have to take classes, qualify
on the range and apply for it through law enforcement.  There
have been recent changes to the gun laws in Texas.  Used to
be you couldn't carry in your car unless you were going to or
from the range, or planning on spending then night across a
county line.  Now you can carry in your car, but must leave it
in the car unless you have a concealed carry permit.  There
have also been a change in the laws allowing the use of deadly
force to protect your property outside the home such as cars.
But why ask me, since this can easily be Googled, and I
just talk a load of crap.  Dead end subject.  We just disagree.

Yes ANSA could very well have had different duties for women, it's a fictional organisation they can do anything they want, they do not have to automatically follow the way NASA worked back then.
And Stewart could have had any role, you can not say that her only reason for being on the crew was to be a 'breeder' just from that line spoken by Taylor. At least she would have enjoyed her training if that was her only role though.

I always thought Landon called him 'skipper' because that was his nickname from back in their college days when they played on the same football team.

Or, better still, do your own research.
And use an impartial source. Then
you won't be able to say it's from
the NRA or the BBC etc . . .
Then decide for yourself.

What the?!? You were once again bragging about being able to 'fix' Planet of the Apes for Fox, this post wasn't about your gun laws and all that stuff. Is this just another of your ways of avoiding the original question yet again as whenever this comes up you tell us all you have a great script/idea to relaunch POTA but then you never give us any details.

Jeff B., I added sleepy eyes because of your suggestion.
Dave B., I softened up her brow ridges by exposing more skin underneath, and rounding them a bit more.
I also took her hair down a lot, because it was actually too tall. I think she looks better, and I know she will paint up spectacularly. Thanks for your suggestions.

As usual all I can say is she looks wonderful.

I actually thought she looked good before (and she did!) – but this really is an improvement.

Silence from the auditorium when Charlton Heston's image was shown
during the video montage of those no longer with us.

The other two might be quibbles but this moment was downright
shameful.

During the video of images from those within the movie industry that
have died the previous year, the crowd clapped politely for each
person. Some, who were more famous (i.e. Roy Schneider, Harold
Pinter, Ricardo Montalbán, etc.) had an extended clip and drew more
applause from the Kodak Theatre. Makes sense. But when Heston's image
appeared, complete with clips from notable features like The Ten
Commandments and Planet of the Apes, the entire auditorium was
silent. You could hear a pin drop or Ben Lyons asking inane
questions. Then when the next image appeared, applause magically
reappeared.

Heston, who was an outspoken advocate of gun-rights and president of
the NRA, was notoriously despised by the Hollywood community. He was
also the victim of a hit-and-run journo-assault from Michael Moore in
Bowling for Columbine. Needless to say, the man wasn't exactly loved
by his colleagues.

The man has earned respect. An icon within the industry, his death
was barely noted in the mainstream press. Hey, that's cool, the press
is probably a different matter anyway, but to be disrespected in that
fashion in a moment where those in the industry are supposed to honor
those who are no longer with is was disgusting. H-town, you can
disagree with the man all you want, (in fact I do for most issues)
but give the man the credit that he has earned and is owed. He was in
Soylent Green, people! SOYLENT GREEN! It doesn't get much better than
that.

I DIDN'T WATCH THE OSCARS, I NEVER DO.
ITS A BIT LIKE THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST.
FIXED AND POLITICAL, THERE HAVE BEEN MANY FILMS , ACTORS,
DIRECTORS,SPECIAL EFFECTS AND EVERY OTHER DEPARTNMENT WHICH IS
          NOMINATED FOR THESE AWARDS .
WHICH IN GENERAL DONE GET IT RIGHT, THERE HAVE BEEN MANY YEARS WHERE
THE BIGGEST BOX OFFICE SUCCESS, BEST ACTING, AND IT STILL GOES TO A
FILM THAT HAD AVERAGE RATINGS AND THE ACTING NOT ALWAYS THE BEST.
THE ONLY THING THESE AWARDS DO IS MAKE THE ACTORS, DIRECTORS ECT
DEMAND A HIGHER PAY PACKET ON THERE NEXT FILM.
IF WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE ABOUT CHARLTON HESTON THEN THOSE ( THE POWERS
THAT BE ) SHOULD GO HOME AND SLIT THERE WHRISTS OUT OF DISROSPECT
          FOR A TRUE MOVIE STAR.
I DID HEAR HEATH LEDGER GOT AN AWARD WHICH WAS GOOD FOR HIS ROLL IN
BATMAN, FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE, BUT WOULD HE HAVE GOT AN AWARD IF HE
          DIDN'T DIE???
PERSONALLY THE BEST WAY OF TELLING IF A FILM IS GOOD OR A ACTORS
GREAT IN A ROLL, IS JUDGE FOR YOUR SELF NOT THOSE ARSEHOLES WHO THINK
THEY ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE.
MAKEING A FILM DOES NOT MAKE YOU A GOOD JUDGE OF OWE THE GENERAL
          PUBLIC SEE IT.

Seriously, I was a bit surprised by the near relative silence during the
ceremony when Chuck name came up. Usually hollywood is a bit more
          forgiving to the departed.

I was also a bit surprised but very happy to see that Leonard Rosenman
was honored. I assumed that he was not as big a name and would not be
mentioned. I was also sad seeing Montalban and Whitmore.

*** The thing is, he doesn't need "forgiveness"... If those dumbasses had looked back over the years, Heston did a lot of things that would have appealed to their "politically correct" sensibilities... Marching with MLK is a biggie, and he did it because he meant it, not as a "photo-op" like the bulk of them nowadays.

Most of them now spout things off rather quickly, but that's all they do... They're not "in the trenches" with the people, they're not even contributing their own $$$ but try to get everyone else to open their wallets. Even when Heston went to a more conservative agenda, he was out their saying what he felt, not what some PR guy/gal told him might get him in better with Hollywood. ***

Yes I think Heath Ledger would have won if he didn't die...
I also find it hard to believe that every single person in that auditorium deliberately sat on their hands when Heston came on screen....it was so quick....I think people are making too much of that...

If anybody's interested in acquiring this, you may contact me off-group.
          Cast = $20
          Paint = $30
shipping = $6 or $3 (depending on how you want him to get to you via USPS). Overseas folks, just $6 for first class air mail.
If you want to wait and buy several heads to save on shipping costs, let me know. So far in 1:6 scale, I only have Carsia and Dr. Milo available. I am slowly trying to make molds and casts of the other sculpts I have. I think I have 18 so far but four of them I am still tweaking.

He was in

I will definitely bring a digital camera.  I only have to sew the chest pocket behind the hieroglyph for a notepad, and MacGuyver a pen with some Apoxie...and I think that's it as far as tweaking my costume.  The moment of truth comes on February 28.  It's been a long 35 years of waiting to get my ape on.

I've sewn deep pockets in my brown underdress for keys, my ID, cash (and my plastic nemesis--I will try not to use that while at the con)...

Unfortunately, I have to carry a purse for the extra stuff I need for touch-ups and for my liquid nutrition.

So, in a nutshell, Jessica's gone to the Forbidden Zone.  Family is dismayed at the level of effort I put into my obsessions, but whatever.  I am here to have fun.

It doesn't get much better than
          that.

Especially since it had already been done to great effect by the
actors playing "Mad Eye Moody/Bertie Crouch, Jr." in HARRY POTTER AND
          THE GOBLET OF FIRE.
