Top marks Jess, everything looked great. I hope you used that pencil
and notepad after all! Did you meet many Apes fans there? Also, was
there any video footage taken?

Someone had videotaped me wondering what type of human I was looking for. I told them I didn't date outside of my species.
They asked where Cornelius was, too...and I said he was home baby sitting.

The costume has those darts. You can't tell because of the lighting, and the fabric is very dark. It has to have those darts for the collar to lay properly. It's got the same number as on the pictures.
My skin feels ok. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The costume was not claustrophobic. Next time I will buy those tatoo inks so I don't have to rework my hands. My hands still have grease paint in the creases...I've tried everything to remove them. It doesn't bother me--they just look dirty. No wonder Apemania people wear gloves. Removing grease makeup is tough.
    Jess.

I saw one of the pics of you. I only have one other suggestion.
If you're having to rework the costume because of the glue
I would put some more, not really sure of the sewing term,
but I think they're called darts, in the collar. See below.

Nope, not even POTA2001 was as bad as that. I just found it horrible
and irritating from start to finish and wanted to throw things at the
screen to make it stop. But I couldn't. And I couldn't walk out
either, I had to stay to the bitter end.

To tell you the truth, I didn't even think of it in those terms. You
guys have been just as great about promoting the book as the POTA

so there was no reason not to acknowledge both groups.

Interesting. So what was removed? Or did you have to edit bits and

Yes, the notepad was handy. I was able to scribble some contacts that I promised to send photos to.
I'm going to rework the costume (move the shoulder seam up, shorten the sleeves a bit, reweave the inner sleeve with a finer yarn...and I'm going to weave my own wig. I've got a year to do this, and I'm crazy enough to do it.

Nope, not even POTA2001 was as bad as that. I just found it horrible
and irritating from start to finish and wanted to throw things at the
screen to make it stop. But I couldn't. And I couldn't walk out

Oh, not to worry--nothing was removed! In fact, the Amazon version
has something the Lulu edition does not--a tab system along the
outside edge of the pages, to make it easy for readers to find the
sections they want to read. (We didn't think to do that until after
seeing just how damn HUGE the Lulu book was, but we added it for the
Amazon version...which is kind of ironic, now that I think about it,
given that the Amazon version is smallre.)

But otherwise, the content is the same. The width and height of the
book are just a bit smaller, but we thankfully lost nothing in the
translation. Kind of annoying, really, that Lulu and Amazon didn't
have compatible printing specs. We hadn't intended to have two
versions of the book floating around out there.

Wait, come to think of it, there IS one other thing that changed. We
realized, while resizing the book for Amazon, that one of the cover
images was wrong, so we corrected it. I'll let ya'll figure out which
      one it was, though. :)

The weather was overcast but not cold. The next day it rained. It's supposed to be springtime here. A lot of flowering trees and early flowering bulbs have already opened.
I was thinking also of that hump...but no time. My jacket is big enough.
Yeah...wig tying is freaky dedication, but all I need is time, and the ultimate goal is to get a wig that looks the exact way I want it to.

It was more work than I care to go through again...which, of course,
means I'm an idiot, given that I'll likely do it again for another
          universe.

          > Did you have to take a lot of baths while you were writing it when
the BURTON movie came up? :-)

LOL--yeah, pretty much. Here's the thing about the Burton film--the
main contradiction it has is in the opening scenes on the station.
That Earth isn't a post-war irradiated zone is a huge discrepancy.
Otherwise, the vast bulk of it takes place on another planet, which
can be excused (especially since the books and comics based on that
film were actually quite good). So I debated whether to include it
for some time, then ultimately decided to throw it in, BUT to include
a lot of notes pointing out where continuity falls apart.

Yeah, that's another thing that is difficult to reconcile. I'm a big
fan of the TV show, and am willing to overlook a lot of problems
because I enjoy it so much. People comment on the dog in the first
episode, but that's never bothered me--it's easy to assume a few dogs
survived the plague. The big problem lies in Virdon and Burke being
surprised by the idea of talking apes. It would have been very
difficult for the government to claim Cornelius and Zira were a hoax,
given that it was the government would paraded them around like
celebrities. And you bring up another problem--why Virdon would
abandon his family. Landon apparently did the same thing, given the
short ANSA film. I guess astronauts don't necessarily have a lot of
common sense (given that nutjob from a few years ago, who drove across
the United States in a diaper so she could kill a fellow astronaut,
maybe there's some truth to that statement).

But isn't that then a case of you tying things together which wasn't meant to be the case with this book?
Just because a more recent story has given the president a name I don't think that gives you the right to decide that a past story's president should have the same name, especially since the writer of the original story didn't name him.
Does this mean that everything in Revolution is now cannon? Do we now have to go with Conquest being set in San Diego as it was in those comics?

I have to agree that the OTHER stories (other than the movie of course) were not so bad!

It’s a shame you couldn’t have just included them and not Burton ’s movie.

Another thing I am trying to figure out is why some things have been included. You state that you did not include any fan fics etc. which is fair enough. You have though included the Argentinean comics which as far as I am aware were never 'official' releases which in reality makes them little more than fan fics themselves doesn't it?

Yeah, that's another thing that is difficult to reconcile. I'm a big
fan of the TV show, and am willing to overlook a lot of problems
because I enjoy it so much. People comment on the dog in the first

I mentioned to Doug Moench that Ty Templeton had provided a name for
the president at the time of the war, and he thought that was rather
cool--he didn't have a problem with my combining the two, and it was
Ty's original intention to have it be the case before space
constraints ended up cutting that scene, so neither author was in
objection. In any case, there's no way the two presidents can be
different individuals--both were in office when the war took place.
Unless, of course, the United States of the POTA universe had a

You don't have to go with any of it if you don't want to. Besides,
"canon" is an issue I specifically didn't deal with in the book, as I
explained in the intro. It's a non-issue to me.

*** As pointed out, there may have been a few small pockets of canines that survived... After all, in ESCAPE, Cornelius says "By the time the plague was contained" which could be taken to mean that they were able to stop it before it totally wiped out every canine and feline...

But the whole plague thing is stupid, if it affected domesticated canines and felines,  then surely it'd have to affect wolves, dingos, fox, lions, tigers, leopards, and so on... Being bears are actually related to dogs, are we to believe it did or didn't affect them too?

If there was a cat killing plague, then Caesar shouldn't have been so surprised anyway... I mean the circus cats that would have been around during his early life would have died, so Armando should have had to told him something about that earlier...

Have to? Not at all--this is fiction, after all, not a federal mandate. <grin>

I tend to view canonicity as a non-issue. Those who accept the TV show are free to do so. Those who don't are free not to. Those who accept Revolution are free to. Those who don't are free not to. Those who accept only the first film are free to. Those who accept the sequels are free to as well. And so forth.

My book certainly doesn't change any of that--I'm just not that powerful or influencial an individual--but rather indicates when every event in every story is said to occur (or when I extrapolate it to occur, if that event is undated) and lets readers decide what to accept in their own personal canon, and what not to accept.

If a fact or event is in my book but a reader doesn't accept that story, or that particular notion, then he or she is free to discard it. Those elements one doesn't agree with can be ignored, without having to throw out the baby with the bath water.

Fans of Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Star Wars, Star Trek and other shared universes often take this stance--if something doesn't fit, then rather than having to discard the entire story containing it, simply assume the story happened, but that the storyteller got a detail or two wrong.

For Revolution, that detail would be San Diego. But the rest of Revolution is so damn good that, for me, ignoring it would be a real shame. Same goes for the Marvel run. Sure, Marvel contains Apeslayer, android gorillas and an inaccurate telling of Battle for the Planet of the Apes. But does that mean we should discard all of Marvel? Some might say it does, but I'd say no--because so many other Marvel tales are gold: Evolution's Nightmare, Quest for the Planet of the Apes, the early chapters of Terror on the Planet of the Apes, Future History Chronicles and so forth.

Then there's the Adventure Comics line, for which I'm in the majority since I'm a fan of that series as well. Sure, it had its share of clunkers--a lot of weak artwork, the inane Frito and JoJo duo, seance-conjured incarnations of Caesar and Breck, and so forth. But it also had Urchak's Folly, Sins of the Father, Blood of the Apes, a wonderful tie-in (issue #19) to Caesar's revolution, and a backstory for the "mama" doll from the first film. If we throw out the bad elements of the Adventure line, then we lose those as well, and some of those--particularly Urchak and Sins--are among the best POTA stories ever told, in my opinion.

That's how I view all of Planet of the Apes. Heck, it's how I view the films themselves. One could make a strong case for disregarding all of the sequels since they get the date of the first film wrong, as well as several other established details, and because of the sheer absurdity of the apes acquiring language, culture and civilization in a single lifetime.

But that's where it helps to incorporate licensed tales such as Revolution, which help to explain those oddities and inconsistencies. Personally, I think the spinoff stories enhance the Apes universe a lot, and so they are part of my own little pocket view of the mythos. Leaving any of them out would have been a shame, in my opinion--and, ultimately, contrary to the whole point of the exercise, which was to be all-inclusive.

You are, of course, free to disagree, both as a fellow Apes fan with your own views of canonicity and quality control, and as a paying customer. As my 12-year-old daughter likes to say, it's all good.

Gosh, no. No one has to do anything. We weren't trying to weave any grand tapestry together with what we were doing, we were only tossing things into the fruit salad, in an attempt to be entertaining, nothing more. As old fans of comix and Ape movies, we enjoyed tying things together here and there, but like Dehn and a few others, there was no sense of it all FITTING together, just that it entertained you while we juggled the balls a bit. If things don't fit, don't worry about them, and if fun can be had by fitting things together, then by all means enjoy that too.

My recollection is that we wanted to subtly suggest it's Trundy up the nose in "Terror"....it was either him or the Vice President we sent off in a helicopter when we bugged out of Washington, I don't have the issue in front of me. But yes, it was a nod to "terror" when we wrote the scene.

Just returned from the premier of Watchmen, and aww, I wasn't disappointed. A long movie but it didn't feel like it, and slightly altered ending not-withstanding, it was a fantastic movie. Rorschach was a real highlight but I didn't realize til the end credits it was Jackie Earle Haley. He was genuinely great, now how about him for the new Apes movie? Seriously, what struck me was how great most of the cast were, though I hadn't heard of most of them. I wonder how distracting a 'star' would have been in the cast, and how necessary that is nowadays (regarding the cast rumours about 'Caesar').

Personally I don't even consider Apeslayer an 'Apes' story at all , even if it was in a licensed comic. We all know it was Killraven with ape heads drawn over the originals and was only done for one reason - to fill up the UK comic.

But as far as I'm concerned, things only fit if you see 'em that way...including the later sequel films (which have their own continuity errors!).

Because it wasn't. Trundy is from a newer story, the president in the Terror story wasn't named and I personally don't agree with you to deciding that this was his name.

It's a bit like the spaceship in Planet being named Icarus by a fan. Just because it has since become the preferred name it is not correct.

I guess I'm just not seeing why this is an issue. The president at the time of the war went into hiding at Mount Rushmore. Trundy was the president at the time of the war. Hence, Trundy was the president who went into hiding at Mount Rushmore. Both are licensed stories. Both writers are fine with the connection, and in fact one of the writers intended it as such. It's just a case of one writer adding onto the work of a previous writer, and that happens all the time in licensed universes. Although I respect your difference of opinion, I'm a little confused as to the cause for your disagreement. This, to me, was just a cool connection that can be made from one story to another. No other name has ever been provided for the president from the Marvel run, and thus no inconsistency exists.

Rich, It's nothing to do with consistency, my problem is that in your book you state that the president's name in the Terror strip is Trundy.
As you say no name was provided in the original story and cool connection or not I personally don't think it is right for you to decide that Arthur Trundy is his name in Terror when no name was ever mentioned.
I thought the whole idea of the book was to take existing facts and place them on a timeline?

I don't have a problem overall with the book, it's a fascinating read (what I've managed to get through so far!) and it's so damn huge!! Actually that is one problem I do have with it - finding space for it in my POTA bookshelf! ;-)

          :)
It's beautiful. I have only gotten through the prologue. It was delicious and I didn't want to rush through it.

I think it must be the Lulu version. I am not aped out. I am an ape freak, and I can't get enough apes. I am currently painting up Carsia and if I didn't have a cold I would be working on refining my costume. I should be studying for my midterms, but apes are more fun.

The Yahoo! Groups team is happy to announce a few new features for Groups Photos, including the ability to upload many photos at once (similar to Flickr), the ability to set an album cover image, and the ability to comment on photos. And while this release does not include the ability to create photo sub-folders, the team is aware that this is a feature many of you want, and are looking to include it in a future release.

To introduce you all to these new features, I've put together a quick walkthrough over on the blog (including screenshots and a step-by-step for some features), which can be found here: http://www.ygroupsb log.com/blog/ 2009/03/03/ new-features- for-groups- photos/

Once you've tried the new photo feature out, please feel free to share your thoughts with the team by leaving a comment on the blog—we'd love to hear what you have to say about these newest features. Thanks!

When it was ape week, it was MY week...and I sure muscled my way in front of the tv. My sisters knew better than to try to stop me. And a weekly scan of the tv guide made sure I did not miss any of my apes. Even to this day, if it's on real time, no matter how many times I have already watched it, I have to make sure the tv is tuned onto my movies..

I wonder how distracting a 'star' would have been in the cast, and how necessary that is nowadays (regarding the cast rumours about 'Caesar')

I'd say pretty good Dave. I kind of would like to have seen it through the eyes of someone who hadn't read the book, because I thought it was perfect until 4/5's of the way through, when I started to notice little things that had been changed. But the story is what makes it great, and while it's streamlined quite a bit it's still a good story. The twist ending still holds together.

I thought the effects were mostly very impressive, and I'm usually a bit cynical about that. Ozymandias' tiger looked CGI and that's the kind of effects I don't like, much too smooth in it's movements, but Dr Manhatten looked great, I'm not sure how they did his effects. Ozymandias was played a bit too smug and sinister I feel, but again Jackie Earle Haley was very good, and unrecognisable from POTA.

              Hey Terry

Thanks – I received the AC magazines.

Have not picked them up from Birthday Boy yet but I’ll let you know what I think when I do….

              Michael

PS Neil – when are you going to show Terry and the wider ape community the strips you did for Terry?

Umm not magazines, just magazine, only the one (or at least that's what it feels like in the envelope.)
