No not yet, Neil can send me stuff
as soon as he is done
Well it's not quite done yet but
it won't be long before it is finished. I've actually gone back to doing this
one like Beware the Beast, pencilling and inking it by hand, not just using
the computer to 'ink' the pencils as I have done on recent
strips.

.htmlYeah I'd be happy to do a cover for it but if I did I would like to base it on the 3 page comic.

I love
Neil's artwork so i would never turn down anything he wants to share
Will you be requiring a cover for that issue?
If so I’ll see if I can talk Neil into it…

No not yet,
Neil can send me stuff as soon as he is done
Well
it's not quite done yet but it won't be long before it is finished. I've
actually gone back to doing this one like Beware the Beast, pencilling and
inking it by hand, not just using the computer to 'ink' the pencils as I have
done on recent strips.

Like I said I would be happy to do a cover based on the 3 pager. If I did though I would also quite like to do the typsetting etc. for the cover as well as I would want to make it
'fit' with the cover image.

Okay that answers my earlier post! Looks like it will have to be #47 the way things are looking at the moment but I'll get back to you on that.

At this point we plan to do cover colors from now
on
Yes a tie-in from cover to story is a great
idea
How about just get it to me when its done - no
pressure then - and it will get used in the next issue in works
Yes Michael i'm a late worker - i work on all my
apes stuff at 4am !

|
.html The "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" bit... you all might find this interesting.
I was watching a documentary about a year ago -- the title of which escapes me -- about the top secret goings on involving the Manhattan Project, back during World War Two. In addition to the group working on "the
gadget" there were all sorts of other facilities being used to make the hemispherical cores out of uranium and plutonium and all that. There was a HUUUGE facility devoted to much of this stuff, I think in Tennessee
but my memory of the details of that documentary are somewhat fuzzy. I should've taped it, dammit!
Anyway, at this facility there was a big sign that the civilian employees would see as they left for their homes -- their homes being an entire town built just for them, so as to minimize any possible contact with
outsiders. The sign was a picture of the 3 apes, the leftmost one covering his Eyes, the middle one covering his Ears, and the rightmost one covering his Mouth (in a "Shhh!" gesture). Below the apes were these
lines [I freeze-framed it and jotted this down]:
WHAT YOU SEE HERE
WHAT YOU DO HERE
WHAT YOU HEAR HERE
WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE
LET IT STAY HERE
The sign also had a picture of Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeves, with his tophat off next to him. All part of that wartime effort, and the need for SECRECY.
I don't know the entire history of that "See No Evil..." (etc) motif with the 3 monkeys, but it seems clear to me that they must have had something to do with the Keeping of Secrets, for reasons of National
Security.
Looking at the "tribunal" scene of PLANET again, it is no wonder then that the 3 orangutans mimic that famous motif... since they do so in answer to Zira's testimony regarding the Truth about how there is
no physiological reason for humans being mute... how there is no flaw in the anatomy, but is in the human brain... and then how Cornelius exhorts them to "Behold! This marvel... this living paradox!" (etc)
The whole purpose of the Tribunal was to "expose Zira and Cornelius" so as to prevent further public humiliation of the Ruling Class which has already suffered from having a Talking Human being heard publicly
doing something that Orthodoxy insists is impossible. The Tribunal was not open-to-the-public, like the kind of trial guaranteed to U.S. citizens by their Constitution [i.e. a speedy and PUBLIC trial]. Zira and
Cornelius may have their "friends and simian sponsors" -- yet those friends were not present at the Tribunal, to lend their moral support.
The "See/Hear/Speak No Evil" motif represents Secrecy for reasons of State: CENSORSHIP during a time of "public danger". By making that tableau happen, the 3 orangutans were saying, in effect, that
the outcome of this Tribunal would be kept "in chambers" -- the Public being prevented from knowing what had transpired.
The President of the Academy probably should have not only had Zira and Cornelius arrested, but also HELD WITHOUT BAIL. They evidently figured that, once out on bail, they would meekly acquiesce to their sorry situation,
and prepare their Defense case for their upcoming Heresy trial. They didn't count on them being so ballsy as to spring Taylor from his cage and skip town!
Risking Apostasy and Treason... all for the sake of a, perhaps, "not-so-unique" Talking Human -- and the Truth.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't mind that PLANET kept that bit in, with the "See/Hear/Speak No Evil" trio of apes. Just as the image of the Statue of Liberty packs a punch due to its
symbolic nature, so too does the 3 apes tableau. It takes away from the realism a bit, sure, but so what? Its symbolic value is what is important. The movie is an absurdist, allegorical Satire, after all. That image is
no more outrageous than how Honorius quotes a simian version of Alexander Pope's "AN ESSAY ON MAN" in which (lines 1 & 2 of Epistle II) Pope says: "Know then Thy-self, presume not God to scan; / The
proper Study of Mankind is Man." -- Honorius stating that "The proper study of Apes is APES."
The only "goof" that I might be inclined to alter is the infamous continuity flub that I admit cannot be "unflubbed" -- the already-blown hatch on the ship. With CGI (etc) it would be possible to
correct this... and I don't think that Schaffner would roll over in his grave if it happened. I wouldn't mind seeing a PLANET OF THE APES "Special Edition" where that flub is corrected, and where
deleted scenes were restored (i.e. the Hunt Club wagon scene... the Nova's Pregnant scene... etc). Mind you, I wouldn't want such a "Special Edition" of PLANET to replace the theatrical cut -- EVER!

Crikey!
Strangely enough my 4th grade
teacher had a similar motto:
”What is born in the classroom
Lives in the classroom
Dies in the classroom
And is buried in the classroom
OR I WILL BURY YOU!”

I don't know the entire history of that "See No Evil..."
(etc) motif with the 3 monkeys, but it seems clear to me that they must have
had something to do with the Keeping of Secrets, for reasons of National
Security.

I think that's a bit of a stretch Patrick. I thought Heston or someone said they put the 3 monkeys in there for a laugh?

Cornelius may have their "friends and simian sponsors" -- yet those friends were not present at the Tribunal, to lend their moral support.

I think Anthony did a wonderful job.
He was going to proceed to colour the
entire comic but we couldn’t get in touch with him for a long time and
Neil decided to do it himself.
I’d like to thank Anthony again for
his efforts.
The first page Neil coloured was Page 9
and I’m attaching this now.

Michael.

Well that's probably because it wasn't coloured by a pro, Anthony one of the group members here did it and I myself think he did a great job.

OK – I sent this to Ty Templeton and
Ty said:
The page is decently separated, but some of the greens and reds are a
little unnatural. I tossed a couple of light source filters onto the
page, and trimmed the chroma from some of the green, and here's what I came up
with.
Natural is the new style, and I think this is a wee bit more natural. (I
didn't do a thing to the separations, by the way, just tweaked the levels of
tint and hue).

Well, I'm not able to view the side by side comparisions but I definately like the darker more natural look to the page. The bright colors might be fantastic for a Superhero comic, but
for Apes I think the toned down approach was a great suggestion. Neil draws the Apes world so well it "feels" right. Like watching a lost episode of the Tv series or something. Where most Apes comics looked
different enough that they felt seperated from the Apes world somehow.

You know, I looked at Ty's 'tweaking' and thought it looked a bit too muted, and that something in between the two would be better (and I do remember 'Revolution' having
some vivid colours, the red gorilla jump-suits for example), and then you show Neil's reworking - perfect!

To each his own. I'm sorry I couldn't make the desolate landscape
more exciting for you. If you check out the pages from Beware the
Beast that Neil coloured himself, you'll see that my colouring style
was intentionally Fosterian. I've always preferred the vividly rich
colours found in the Power Records booklets, but they would not have
been appropriate here.

Personally i wish i was gifted enough and had the time to put into doing this.
I will admit the more muted colour does look better but what the hell i would be happy with any.
Keep up the good work its fantastic, if i was a woman i would have your baby's!!

So I hope you know how glad I am that you are alive and well my friend - we

Mr Montague is rarely nice to anyone or pleased with anything - I'm
surprised he's even been nice to Neil! Please disregard his comments - if
they were helpful like Ty's comments it might be worth listening but James

Again, welcome back!

.htmlMichael, I can't make your post sound mean even if I try to
misinterpret it on purpose. It doesn't bother me that Neil was
inspired by my work to finish the story with colour. I'm flattered.
It's good to be back. I thank you again, Michael. I'm eager to get
back into my gorilla uniform so that I can start putting some filthy
humans down.
Mr. Montague's criticism is ridiculous. Taylor and his crew leave the
beach where Landon plants his tiny flag and they slog across a barren
desert for more than eleven minutes before laying eyes on the
waterfall. Could that have possibly been more bland if they'd tried?
Sometimes blandness is needed to provide contrast for what's to come
later. If Taylor's group had struggled through a land of rainbows and
circus tents, the ape city would've been a letdown in comparison.

I think it adds another dimension and it
also seems to modernize the whole comic.
We are considering doing the back-story in
black and white, and possibly also in Bob Kane style (old!).

I really enjoyed working on the pages that I did. Maybe someday we
can work together again. At least my font rears its ugly head
occasionally ;-)

Well my opinions are genuine thank you very much. You must realize if you put something up to be seen and expect comments on it not all of those comments are going to be positive. I still
stand by what i posted - the first one was way to bland looking for me. I did like the ones colored by Neil though, just my opinion, if i'm allowed to have one that is.

I’m not sure Neil.
I was thinking we would start with version
1, Black and white, and show how the story changed first, then how the colour
came in.
I’ll throw the question out to the
group – what do you want? The full analysis of the entire process
and how things evolved, or just the coloured final product?

OK this sounds good.
Maybe the B&W original script where
applicable and compare this to the colour final script?

I vote for color or maybe show both the color and the
black and white version. That way we can compare them.

The ones in the
files section are all painted by Dave Ballard, and very nice they are too. I did
a test colouring of this page:
that we added to
the printed version (issue#2) but it is not in the files and I have gone and
lost it. I must have deleted it or something and all the files that were with it
and I have no back-up copy so if anyone did keep a copy of it I would really
appreciate having a copy of it.
Neil T. Foster
I’ll have to throw
this one back at Neil.
There’s a few that
Dave Ballard coloured and some Neil coloured.

This Thursday (June 11th, 2009) Yahoo! Groups will be undergoing maintenance.
During this time 50% of groups will be unavailable for up to an hour. The outage
is scheduled to begin some time between 2 and 3 pm PT (10-11 pm

While the maintenance is going on, all features of affected groups,

I do have
another page that I coloured, well sort of, I did a painting based on another
of the pages added to the print version, the opening splash
page:
with a
couple of little changes (hey we can play spot the
difference!)
I'll upload it
to the
Beast
colour tests folder in the
files section.

Added Neil's color test for Beware the Beast to the files section in the
folder with Dave Ballards color pages.
