I do have
another page that I coloured, well sort of, I did a painting based on another
of the pages added to the print version, the opening splash
page:
with a
couple of little changes (hey we can play spot the
difference!)
I'll upload it
to the
Beast
colour tests folder in the
files section.
Neil T.
Foster
Added Neil's color test for Beware the Beast to the files section in the
folder with Dave Ballards color pages.

.htmleBay rule #1 - HOLD BACK ON YOUR BID!
All you are doing by bidding now is letting your competitors get ready for an onslaught at the end and letting the seller see he can get friends to up the bids and make your life a nightmare!
Wait until the last 5 minutes or so to bid, or even the last 30 seconds!
That's just my humble opinion but think about it! :)

I keep bringing this up because it's good to
know where Fox is coming from with their sci-fi flicks.Plus it's, well, sci-fi
flicks! "Entertainment Weekly" says that Fox doesn't want to move on their
"Alien" prequel unless Sir Ridley Scott himself directs. http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20283385,00.html"
That's probably not an option, though after a
long courtship they managed to get Oliver Stone for "Wall Street 2" (his first
movie for the studio since the aborted "Planet of the Apes" variation). Scott
has reportedly caught sci-fi fever 3 decades after his revered "Alien" and
"Blade Runner" but his eye is on Joe Haldeman's classic "The Forever
War" http://www.variety.com/VR1117993856.html"
and maybe "Brave New World". Sir ain't directing an "Alien" movie, sir. Will Fox
take no Sir for an answer? And does this mean they'll want a more seasoned
director for "Caesar"? <.html <.html

If you just get a maximum in your head then make sure you are there on the day and put that number in then all that can go wrong is net connection, net speed......so it has its faults too!

Oh yes, there's nothing like the excitement of pressing the refresh button until you only have five seconds to bid, and then (with your pre-typed maximum on a separate window or tab), sending in your bid. When
I do this, I swear that I can hear my heart beating between my ears, and the adrenalin rush you get--whew! So exciting! Almost like riding a roller coaster!

.html Does anyone here know anything about tiger scorpions? I'm re-watching
the episode "The Horse Race," in which Galen was bitten by a tiger
scorpion and nearly died. Oddly enough, however, I can't find ANY
Web pages about that kind of scorpion--not even one--leading me to
wonder if it's an actual scorpion breed, or a name created for the
episode. There's an online video in which a guy named Bear eats what
he says is a tiger scorpion, and there are some sites about a
Yoga-like position called the tiger scorpion, but that's all I can
find, which seems unfathomable if there really is such an
animal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! <.html

I remember some time back when I was working in the school's library, I was paging through the book that specialized in scorpions. If I remember rightly I was reading about tiger scorpion(s). They are
generally very small and actually live in groups; meaning if you see one there are probably are more of them lurking about. They are commonly found in places like the New Mexico and Arizona desert, and are
considered very poisonous. I remember also that they are striped, thus giving them their name.
As for apes retaining the name??? Well they probably would as they would retain the name "horse" or "dog" and so on. Of course in reality, in linquistics, such names would have evolved into
something that would only sounds familiar to that of "horse" "Dog" or "Tiger Scorpion".

I do have
another page that I coloured, well sort of, I did a painting based on
another of the pages added to the print version, the opening splash
page:
with a
couple of little changes (hey we can play spot the
difference!)
I'll upload it
to the
Beast colour tests folder in the files section.

Added Neil's color test for Beware the Beast to the
files section in the folder with Dave Ballards color pages.

But that's why you need to put the highest amount you can live with without feeling buyer's remorse.
If you did not win it, then it wasn't meant to be, because there might be something even better than what you just lost out on.

Oh yes, there's nothing like the excitement of
pressing the refresh button until you only have five seconds to bid, and then

Very
nice!
I feel there's something very 'nostalgic' or ' Old World '
in the delicate way that's been coloured. Like a plate you'd find in a quality
book produced in the 40's or 50's? Take away Gideon and replace him with King
Arthur or Aragorn...

anyone here know anything about tiger scorpions?
Thanks!

Do me a favour (and yourself!).
Go pick up the phone and call SIDESHOW and ask to speak to someone about the new DR Z figure.
Let them know you are part of a community of POTA fans and you need some feedback on the new premuim figure and that there are people ready to cancel their orders, just like you had to, if they don't get some
answers.
Give it a go!

Tim, this is what I wrote to Sideshow's customer service when I received the cancellation notification:
I wanted to know if the problems of the Zaius PF jacket have been fixed: Does it look like he's still wearing it backwards because of the curve where the leather meets the material? Does his jacket look like
it's got two sets of lapels, one for the front side and one set for the backside? The bottom of the leather of his jacket---is the leather still short or did Sideshow extend it? If the leather has not been
extended then Dr. Zaius will still look like he's wearing his jacket backwards--even moreso with the shortened leather. And last, did Sideshow make the exclusive doll with both legs intact? If not, Sideshow must
have used the wrong screenshot, and I advise you to look carefully again. I never received an answer from Sideshow, and I do not want to be surprised. These I know are minor flaws, but they are of a concern to me.
These flaws would bug the heck out of me, most especially his jacket. I don't care if it's his backside we are talking about. A PF needs to be admired from all directions.
Jess.
Michael I will call Sideshow in a few days to see if I can get anywhere, when the dust at work has settled down.

Although it doesn't excuse the short leather, it's entirely possible that the jacket on the prototype IS on backwards; the people who dress and photograph prototypes are rarely the same people who created
them. On Jun 11, 2009, at 2:32 am, jessica rotich wrote:

The doll that Zaius is holding could have stumps for legs just like the 1:6 scale Sideshow Zaius. The prototype photographs conveniently hide the doll's legs. Although the PF Zaius
Exclusive doll looks fabulous and grungy...they don't show you the legs of the doll.
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=75141FLEX&utm_source=search0109
Why would they dress/undress Zaius to photograph his backside? Doesn't that take up valuable photography time?
And then the other minor gripe I have is the actual pose of the hand for the non-exclusive version. This I did not mention to Sideshow, but one of the ape freaks on the Sideshow board did mention that it looks like
Dr. Zaius is holding out his hand begging for cash. The hand and arm I think is stuck in that begging pose. So it just makes sense to take the leap and purchase the exclusive version, which includes a doll that he
can hold. Legless/footless? I hope not, for the people who already are paying a premium price for this premium format statue.
Who was it that said, Zillion-dollar Zaius? Michael, wasn't it? Very "whitty"... Jess.

it's got two sets of lapels, one for the front side and one set for the backside?

I never really
checked these out properly before as I'm not into the dollies ;-) but I wonder
if anyone contacted them to complain about their 'Gorilla Captain'? What
are they thinking - a TV show gorilla with Beneath
accessories!
Neil T. Foster
The doll that Zaius is holding could have stumps for legs just like the 1:6
scale Sideshow Zaius. The prototype photographs conveniently hide the
doll's legs. Although the PF Zaius Exclusive doll looks fabulous and
grungy...they don't show you the legs of the doll.
http://www.sideshow toy.com/? page_id=4489&sku=75141FLEX&utm_source=search01 09
Why
would they dress/undress Zaius to photograph his backside? Doesn't that
take up valuable photography time?
And then the other minor gripe I
have is the actual pose of the hand for the non-exclusive version. This
I did not mention to Sideshow, but one of the ape freaks on the Sideshow board
did mention that it looks like Dr. Zaius is holding out his hand begging for
cash. The hand and arm I think is stuck in that begging pose. So
it just makes sense to take the leap and purchase the exclusive version, which
includes a doll that he can hold. Legless/footless? I hope not,
for the people who already are paying a premium price for this premium format
statue.
Who was it that said, Zillion-dollar Zaius? Michael,
wasn't it? Very "whitty"...
Jess.

Talk about a comeback. Maybe there was
something to all those religious epics he did. Actually, the divine intervention
is the folks who shot the movie "Genghis Khan" with Charlton Heston in 1992 and
then ran out of money. Now they're looking to finish the movie and release it.
Doesn't sound like the recipe for a quality film but if it's any good it'll be
one last "new" performance in a movie theater with Chuck. The late Pat Morita is
also in it.

The recent rumor that Fox is giving thumbs
down to the Scott Bros.' choice for a director of their "Alien" prequel and
wants Sir Ridley Scott to take the reins like he did with the original seems to
have gained some weight. Tony Scott, Sir Ridley's brother, is out promoting his
remake of "The Taking of Pelham" and refused to comment on "Alien", suggesting
there's some conflict going on.

For a laugh? Sure. But what is it about the 3 Monkeys motif that makes it funny? In the context of the scene, Maximus, the President of the Academy, and Zaius -- "appearing for the
State" -- do the Three Wise Monkeys routine when Zira and Cornelius are stating their case, which happens to be considered Heresy. That is, EVIL. The orangutans are refusing to HEAR, to SEE, and to SPEAK any
evil... refusing to allow the "evil" testimony of the two chimpanzees to make them "unclean" (in a religious sense), I gather.
The ultimate reason for this moment in the film is only revealed at the end of the movie, in that this film has all along been a cautionary tale about NUCLEAR WEAPONS and their misuse by the human race.
Unlike Boulle's novel, the film has the ape world being our planet Earth, and the prehistoric advanced culture that preceded the ape society had been wiped out through Nuclear War.
The nuclear genie was brought out of the bottle due to the Manhattan Project. It was at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where that huge facility just happened to have a big sign for all those government workers to see, to remind
them that their work was Top Secret: a sign depicting the 3 Wise Monkeys and that admonition to maintain security:
WHAT YOU SEE HERE
WHAT YOU DO HERE
WHAT YOU HEAR HERE
WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE
LET IT STAY HERE.
Did Serling or Wilson know about that use of the 3 Wise Monkeys image for the Manhattan Project? I don't know. But it wouldn't surprise me if SOMEbody on-set did. The film hit theaters 23 years after the first
use of the Atomic Bomb, and -- as I said before -- the movie ended up being an anti-Nuke cautionary tale. The big surprise at the end of the movie isn't just that Taylor's been back on Earth the whole time...
it's that the civilization he left behind had destroyed itself with nuclear weapons.
"You BLEW IT UP!!! Oh, DAMN YOU! GodDAMN you all to HELL!!!"
As I recall, the decision to shoot that scene, showing the 3 orangutans doing the 3 Wise Monkeys bit, was a spur-of-the-moment thing. Some felt it was "too much" whereas others thought it wasn't too
over-the-top. Yes, it's a "funny" image. But the image is more than merely funny -- it MEANS something. That meaning has varied some since it was first introduced back in the 8th Century (according to what
Wikipedia page). One modern "take" on it might be an admonition for somebody in the evangelical community not to speak "dirty" words, not to look at pornography, and to plug you ears whenever you
hear somebody else say something "dirty"... that sort of thing.
Like the brouhaha over Letterman's joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.
When I saw that documentary about the Oak Ridge facility that was a major part of the Manhattan Project, and saw that they had used the Three Wise Monkeys for the purposes of state censorship and National Security, well,
being a POTA fan it made me sit up and take notice!
PLANET was, ultimately, a film that was trying to sound a warning regarding the very real potentiality that we just might nuke our own civilization to oblivion if we didn't become "a better breed" (as
Taylor had hoped Mankind would evolve into).
One last thing.
According to the Wikipedia article, the names of the Three Wise Monkeys are (1) MIZARU, covering his eyes, (2) KIKAZARU, covering his ears, and (3) IWAZARU, covering his mouth.
One of the interpretations of the 3 Wise Monkeys is said to be describing "someone who doesn't want to be involved in a situation, or someone willfully turning a blind eye to the immorality of an act in which
they are involved"... which certainly sounds a bit like Zaius, doesn't it? He does what he does "with no pleasure" (when he has Cornelius silenced).
Remember how, in Boulle's novel (chapter 15), Ulysse Merou says that "all the underlings who addressed him [Zaius] began with these two words [i.e. "Mi Zaius."]? He tells the readers of his manuscript,
"Zaius, I subsequently learned, was the pontiff's name, "mi" an honorific title."
If we take the names of the Three Wise Monkeys and remove the common suffix-part ["-ZARU"] which is a word-play on "saru" (which means "monkey"), we are left with the "prefix"
portions of their names: "MI-", "KIKA-", and "IWA-". Since the word "mizaru" literally means "don't see" or "see not", and "zaru" is the
"archaic negative verb conjugation" [i.e. "don't"], then "Mi-" must mean "see".
I wonder if Boulle was thinking of "Mizaru" the "See not!" [or, "See no evil!"] monkey, when he decided to invent that "honorific title" that the other apes use when referring to
Zaius: "Mi Zaius." I wonder if "Mi Zaius" was meant to sound almost like "Mizaru"... the name "Zaius" being not-too-dissimilar to "Zaru". Hmmm...
It reminds me of what Zira said about Orangutans in ESCAPE, calling them "blinkered, pseudoscientific geese". Blinkered means having one's vision purposely obstructed. "Mizaru!" indeed...

Patrick,
You got my post and read the link that
explains what the 3 wise monkeys are all about (ie nothing to do with what you
are claiming)?
I actually guessed you would put that
aside and continue along the wrong path with this but I was actually hoping to
be wrong.

For a laugh? Sure. But what is it about the 3 Monkeys
motif that makes it funny? In the context of the scene, Maximus, the President
of the Academy, and Zaius -- "appearing for the State" -- do the
Three Wise Monkeys routine when Zira and Cornelius are stating their case,
which happens to be considered Heresy. That is, EVIL. The orangutans are
refusing to HEAR, to SEE, and to SPEAK any evil... refusing to allow the
"evil" testimony of the two chimpanzees to make them
"unclean" (in a religious sense), I gather.
The ultimate reason for this moment in the film is only revealed at the end of
the movie, in that this film has all along been a cautionary tale about NUCLEAR
WEAPONS and their misuse by the human race.
Unlike Boulle's novel, the film has the ape world being our planet Earth, and
the prehistoric advanced culture that preceded the ape society had been wiped
out through Nuclear War.
The nuclear genie was brought out of the bottle due to the Manhattan Project.
It was at Oak Ridge ,
Tennessee , where that huge facility just
happened to have a big sign for all those government workers to see, to remind
them that their work was Top Secret: a sign depicting the 3 Wise Monkeys and
that admonition to maintain security:
WHAT YOU SEE HERE
WHAT YOU DO HERE
WHAT YOU HEAR HERE
WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE
LET IT STAY HERE.
Did Serling or Wilson know about that use of the 3 Wise Monkeys image for the
Manhattan Project? I don't know. But it wouldn't surprise me if SOMEbody on-set
did. The film hit theaters 23 years after the first use of the Atomic Bomb, and
-- as I said before -- the movie ended up being an anti-Nuke cautionary tale.
The big surprise at the end of the movie isn't just that Taylor's been back on
Earth the whole time... it's that the civilization he left behind had destroyed
itself with nuclear weapons.
"You BLEW IT UP!!! Oh, DAMN YOU! GodDAMN you all to HELL!!!"
As I recall, the decision to shoot that scene, showing the 3 orangutans doing
the 3 Wise Monkeys bit, was a spur-of-the- moment thing. Some felt it was
"too much" whereas others thought it wasn't too over-the-top. Yes,
it's a "funny" image. But the image is more than merely funny -- it
MEANS something. That meaning has varied some since it was first introduced
back in the 8th Century (according to what Wikipedia page). One modern
"take" on it might be an admonition for somebody in the evangelical
community not to speak "dirty" words, not to look at pornography, and
to plug you ears whenever you hear somebody else say something
"dirty"... that sort of thing.
Like the brouhaha over Letterman's joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting
knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.
When I saw that documentary about the Oak
Ridge facility that was a major part of the Manhattan
Project, and saw that they had used the Three Wise Monkeys for the purposes of
state censorship and National Security, well, being a POTA fan it made me sit
up and take notice!
PLANET was, ultimately, a film that was trying to sound a warning regarding the
very real potentiality that we just might nuke our own civilization to oblivion
if we didn't become "a better breed" (as
Taylor had hoped Mankind would evolve into).
One last thing.
According to the Wikipedia article, the names of the Three Wise Monkeys are (1)
MIZARU, covering his eyes, (2) KIKAZARU, covering his ears, and (3) IWAZARU,
covering his mouth.
One of the interpretations of the 3 Wise Monkeys is said to be describing
"someone who doesn't want to be involved in a situation, or someone willfully
turning a blind eye to the immorality of an act in which they are
involved"... which certainly sounds a bit like Zaius, doesn't it? He does
what he does "with no pleasure" (when he has Cornelius silenced).
Remember how, in Boulle's novel (chapter 15), Ulysse Merou says that "all
the underlings who addressed him [Zaius] began with these two words [i.e.
"Mi Zaius."]? He tells the readers of his manuscript, "Zaius, I
subsequently learned, was the pontiff's name, "mi" an honorific
title."
If we take the names of the Three Wise Monkeys and remove the common
suffix-part ["-ZARU"] which is a word-play on "saru" (which
means "monkey"), we are left with the "prefix" portions of
their names: " MI- ",
"KIKA-", and "IWA-". Since the word "mizaru"
literally means "don't see" or "see not", and
"zaru" is the "archaic negative verb conjugation" [i.e.
"don't"], then "Mi-" must mean "see".
I wonder if Boulle was thinking of "Mizaru" the "See not!"
[or, "See no evil!"] monkey, when he decided to invent that
"honorific title" that the other apes use when referring to Zaius:
"Mi Zaius." I wonder if "Mi Zaius" was meant to sound
almost like "Mizaru"... the name "Zaius" being
not-too-dissimilar to "Zaru". Hmmm...
It reminds me of what Zira said about Orangutans in ESCAPE, calling them
"blinkered, pseudoscientific geese". Blinkered means having one's
vision purposely obstructed. "Mizaru!" indeed...

no wonder then that the 3 orangutans mimic that famous motif... since they do
so in answer to Zira's testimony regarding the Truth about how there is no
physiological reason for humans being mute... how there is no flaw in the
anatomy, but is in the human brain... and then how Cornelius exhorts them to
"Behold! This marvel... this living paradox!" (etc)

open-to-the- public, like the kind of trial guaranteed to
U.S. citizens
by their Constitution [i.e. a speedy and PUBLIC trial]. Zira and Cornelius may
have their "friends and simian sponsors" -- yet those friends were
not present at the Tribunal, to lend their moral support.
> >

reasons of State: CENSORSHIP during a time of "public danger". By
making that tableau happen, the 3 orangutans were saying, in effect, that the
outcome of this Tribunal would be kept "in chambers" -- the Public
being prevented from knowing what had transpired.

count on them being so ballsy as to spring
Taylor from his cage and skip town!

points over it.
