What makes it
funny (or what they thought at the time when they added it)? My guess was
because it was the 3 wise monkeys pose and the movie was Planet of the
Apes maybe?
Neil T. Foster
For a laugh? Sure. But what is it about the 3 Monkeys motif that makes it
funny? In the context of the scene, Maximus, the President of the Academy, and
Zaius -- "appearing for the State" -- do the Three Wise Monkeys routine when
Zira and Cornelius are stating their case, which happens to be considered
Heresy. That is, EVIL. The orangutans are refusing to HEAR, to SEE, and to
SPEAK any evil... refusing to allow the "evil" testimony of the two
chimpanzees to make them "unclean" (in a religious sense), I
gather.
The ultimate reason for this moment in the film is only
revealed at the end of the movie, in that this film has all along been a
cautionary tale about NUCLEAR WEAPONS and their misuse by the human
race.
Unlike Boulle's novel, the film has the ape world being our
planet Earth, and the prehistoric advanced culture that preceded the ape
society had been wiped out through Nuclear War.
The nuclear genie was
brought out of the bottle due to the Manhattan Project. It was at Oak Ridge,
Tennessee, where that huge facility just happened to have a big sign for all
those government workers to see, to remind them that their work was Top
Secret: a sign depicting the 3 Wise Monkeys and that admonition to maintain
security:
WHAT YOU SEE HERE WHAT YOU DO HERE WHAT YOU HEAR
HERE WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE LET IT STAY HERE.
Did Serling or Wilson
know about that use of the 3 Wise Monkeys image for the Manhattan Project? I
don't know. But it wouldn't surprise me if SOMEbody on-set did. The film hit
theaters 23 years after the first use of the Atomic Bomb, and -- as I said
before -- the movie ended up being an anti-Nuke cautionary tale. The big
surprise at the end of the movie isn't just that Taylor's been back on Earth
the whole time... it's that the civilization he left behind had destroyed
itself with nuclear weapons.
"You BLEW IT UP!!! Oh, DAMN YOU! GodDAMN
you all to HELL!!!"
As I recall, the decision to shoot that scene,
showing the 3 orangutans doing the 3 Wise Monkeys bit, was a
spur-of-the- moment thing. Some felt it was "too much" whereas others
thought it wasn't too over-the-top. Yes, it's a "funny" image. But the image
is more than merely funny -- it MEANS something. That meaning has varied some
since it was first introduced back in the 8th Century (according to what
Wikipedia page). One modern "take" on it might be an admonition for somebody
in the evangelical community not to speak "dirty" words, not to look at
pornography, and to plug you ears whenever you hear somebody else say
something "dirty"... that sort of thing.
Like the brouhaha over
Letterman's joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting knocked up by Alex
Rodriguez.
When I saw that documentary about the Oak Ridge facility
that was a major part of the Manhattan Project, and saw that they had used the
Three Wise Monkeys for the purposes of state censorship and National Security,
well, being a POTA fan it made me sit up and take notice!
PLANET was,
ultimately, a film that was trying to sound a warning regarding the very real
potentiality that we just might nuke our own civilization to oblivion if we
didn't become "a better breed" (as Taylor had hoped Mankind would evolve
into).
One last thing.
According to the Wikipedia article, the
names of the Three Wise Monkeys are (1) MIZARU, covering his eyes, (2)
KIKAZARU, covering his ears, and (3) IWAZARU, covering his mouth.
One
of the interpretations of the 3 Wise Monkeys is said to be describing "someone
who doesn't want to be involved in a situation, or someone willfully turning a
blind eye to the immorality of an act in which they are involved"... which
certainly sounds a bit like Zaius, doesn't it? He does what he does "with no
pleasure" (when he has Cornelius silenced).
Remember how, in Boulle's
novel (chapter 15), Ulysse Merou says that "all the underlings who addressed
him [Zaius] began with these two words [i.e. "Mi Zaius."]? He tells the
readers of his manuscript, "Zaius, I subsequently learned, was the pontiff's
name, "mi" an honorific title."
If we take the names of the Three Wise
Monkeys and remove the common suffix-part ["-ZARU"] which is a word-play on
"saru" (which means "monkey"), we are left with the "prefix" portions of their
names: "MI-", "KIKA-", and "IWA-". Since the word "mizaru" literally means
"don't see" or "see not", and "zaru" is the "archaic negative verb
conjugation" [i.e. "don't"], then "Mi-" must mean "see".
I wonder if
Boulle was thinking of "Mizaru" the "See not!" [or, "See no evil!"] monkey,
when he decided to invent that "honorific title" that the other apes use when
referring to Zaius: "Mi Zaius." I wonder if "Mi Zaius" was meant to sound
almost like "Mizaru"... the name "Zaius" being not-too-dissimilar to "Zaru".
Hmmm...
It reminds me of what Zira said about Orangutans in ESCAPE,
calling them "blinkered, pseudoscientific geese". Blinkered means having one's
vision purposely obstructed. "Mizaru!"
indeed...

Oh he just picked someone with a high
media profile (Tracey Grimshaw this time) and said something nasty about her.
He does that when his popularity sags.
Last time he was here he did it to a New

Yeah – he called an Aussie TV
presenter, Tracey Grimshaw, a pig.
Then he said his mom made him apologize
and she said she hadn’t said a thing!
I believe his mom.

The life size
Galen was the one thing I really wanted when I was a kid. From the moment I
saw them advertised in a colour Marvel comic it was my most wanted POTA thing. I
would have loved having one of them hanging on my bedroom door but being a kid
living in England there was no way I was ever going to afford to get
one.

I had that thing up in my room for years. The day it came in the mail, I lost my mind. I couldn't believe it was really about as tall as my Dad. Having my Dad be a Sci-Fi geek himself, I
had a fantastic, Monster filled childhood. Every year around Halloween my Mom would let me take the Life sized Galen out of my room & put it in the Living room with the rest of the Halloween decor. Even after I moved
out she put that Galen up every year for Halloween. I beleive my original is still in a box of Halloween stuff at my parents in Miami but my Mom swears she no longer has it. She said that about my original Mego figures
too. Then about 5 years ago they came up for X mas & brought me a box filled with them.

Article? I have
not written any article for Ape Chronicles on this comic. I take it you have
used my reply from the private email you sent me asking questions about the
comic as an 'article'?!
If so you have
used my off the cuff un-researched comments that were never intended to be used
this way. I was never asked to supply an article on this subject and was never
told my reply to a private email would be used in your
magazine.
I am not at all
impressed with this.

Thanks Michael,
Though I'm not sure about the cover to #46
(It's the first I've seen of it !!!)
It's a detail from a painting I did for a book mark
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w252/hill19652000/bookmarksmall.jpg
Even on the real painting the heads only a couple of inches across and is n't meant to be blown up to A4 size (:
It just can't take that kind of blowing up.
Terry , if it's not too late could you give me an E-Mail
Best,Graham.

Hulu and other sites where shows and clips can be
seen without too much fuss are sometimes linked from the groups, so I thought it
pertinent to bring this up. The Biz is reportedly losing their shirts over this.
Shows that people love and watch online are getting cancelled because
advertisers aren't going to support them if their ads aren't seen.
Yeah, we hate ads, we hate paying for
something, and we can go on about greedy studios but at a certain point these
things have to make some money or they cease to exist. What is the
responsibility for those of us who enjoy these productions? It's the same
controversy across the board: the internet is killing the music industry, the
internet is killing newspapers, the internet is killing books.
Is it just evolution? Soon everything will
come from our computers? And what will the apes dig up in the future? A bunch of
dead computers they can't plug in?

Very cool Anthony,
thanks.
Neil T. Foster
I've uploaded two MP3 files; The Hunt (from Planet of the Apes) as
played directly from the sheet music, and Shopping (from Escape from
the Planet of the Apes) with additional instruments which I
transcribed and arranged myself.
You'll find them under Files >
Miscellaneous in the PotADG Members' area.
Enjoy.
Anthony

You want weird? You can't handle weird. Bruce Willis, 54, and fresh new bride Emma Heming, 23, did a Planet of the Apes-themed S&M spread . . . we are looking right at it, we're not making this up . . . in
July's issue of W, replete with simulated intimate positions and stuff. The bizarre "portfolio" is titled "Mr. & Mrs. Willis." Bruce says he and Emma and his ex, Demi Moore, and her hubby, Ashton
Kutcher, and all the Moore/Willis kids are supertight: "We've become like a tribe." Emma says the whole swell thing is "comfortable and fun." Now make with the chains, honey!!! <.html

This sucks. The Motion Picture Home and
Hospital continues it's closing. So far a reported 5 people have died from the
ordeal of being moved out.
I have great memories of visiting John
Chambers here. This is where they filmed his birthday tribute. It was one of
Roddy's fave charities and where he donated his Caesar statue.
Although it's still not clear how far
they're going with this. Sounds like they're closing the hospital but
not the home or the gardens with the Caesar statue, but still, they're uprooting
100 + residents. Actress Diane Ladd is the spokesperson for a group to bring
attention to this.
Since 2005 they've been having a $ 10 million
shortfall each year. Considering how much some people rake in in Hollywood it
would seem like something could be done.

This sickens me. Its just like the situation with Forrest Ackerman from Famous Monsters of Filmland. After his passing everyone & his brother was impacted by his life but where were all
these Hollywood f*cks when he was suffering & having to sell off the greatest collection of Sci-Fi / Monster collectables ever to be displayed free by a single owner? They all turned up to get facetime at his funeral
but that was nothing but publicity. Watch, the more this gets attention the more people will speak out about this... after the fact.

I'm re-reading "Hostage," the unfilmed TV series script, and was

"The insoles pictured below are painted red and
yellow with the Planet of the Apes lettering used in the comic book
series"
Umm no they
aren't, that is not the same font as used for the Adventures on the POTA comic
series, nothing like it.

Foster
The only thing that would make it look
more like POTA is if Bruce Willis was wearing them!

I have now seen the photos but I need to look again, because I didn't see anything ape-related about it. I see homage to 12 Monkeys, but not Planet of the Apes. Am I missing
something?

Hmm, old bloke marries a bird almost half his age, not very Hollywood that is it? I'm sure they'll be married to each other for the rest of their lives, ho hum.

You want weird? You can't handle weird. Bruce Willis, 54, and fresh new bride Emma Heming, 23, did a Planet of the Apes-themed S&M spread . . . we are looking right at it, we're not making this up . . .
in July's issue of W, replete with simulated intimate positions and stuff. The bizarre "portfolio" is titled "Mr. & Mrs. Willis." Bruce says he and Emma and his ex, Demi Moore, and her hubby,
Ashton Kutcher, and all the Moore/Willis kids are supertight: "We've become like a tribe." Emma says the whole swell thing is "comfortable and fun." Now make with the chains, honey!!!
