an ape astronaut in a capsule? Does the movie itself have some POTA
tie-in?

I’ve been in touch with Missy Davy,
who is Scott Frank’s Personal Assistant.
Her attitude was originally quite
friendly, and she’s still friendly but not at all informative.
She was the person who put me straight
about Scott being the writer, not the director (and all the articles were
dubbing him as director so that tells you haw accurate the press is).
I sent a string of interview questions for
“The Forbidden Zine” and she referred me to a fellow at FOX.
The fellow at FOX emailed me back and said
“no progress, nothing to report, could you please send your phone number
so I can update you”….so I did.
Rory – how can it be in development
hell? It’s only at the writing stage – there’s no
actors chosen, no director…..nothing (and this WAS confirmed by Missy
ages ago).
It’s waiting to be scripted –
end of story.

Good question.
I am excited because Fox has employed a
writer of intelligent sci-fi. To me this means they understood this is a
necessary starting point.
How can that NOT be exciting to any fair
dinkum POTA fan?
How many times can you watch the same
film?
I’m excited because the film series
I love is flawed by ridiculous plot holes by sloppy makers – it’s
the OPPOSITE to INTELLIGENT sci-fi. And I think someone with a proper
vision could tell a far better story – and a sequence of stories, without
actually REAMKING anything.
I’m excited because they are
starting with the ape revolution, or at least with the beginnings of it, and it
they make it so this movie is a PREQUEL to PLANET, with none of the
ridiculousness of CONQUEST where we are supposed to believe the apes are
telepathic, and have evolved almost overnight from that stupid gorilla who
killed Milo to intelligent servants. Maybe Scott Frank has a FAR better
way to explain it – I think my 7 year old twins probably would!
And if Mr Frank does it right, and has
this as the ORIGINAL revolution (pre planet, on a timeline that does not repeat
ad infinitum), then it’s even better because Rory can still watch Planet
and we’ll just have a prequel to it that lends itself to quite a few more
prequels.
This can be done.

What worries me is that I offered to send
a copy of Rich’s book to Scott Frank and I was politely asked not to.
That REALLY bothers me because it makes me
wonder how much research he is putting into the original franchise and how much
respect he intends to give to it.
It also means that he’s not looking to the
hardcore fans who have been discussing and researching and fighting (in the

If it does not relate to POTA – then call
it Lancelot Link.
But anyway, in light of my recent

I
wouldn't worry about it, I've had 2 disallowed recently without any
reason being given. One about me not wanting to get into any new 'groupwars' and
the one where I had no choice but to publicly ask a group member over there
to stop emailing me after he had repeatedly ignored my private request to stop.
I don't understand why that would be but I'm past stressing about

What worries me is that I offered to send a copy of Rich’s
book to Scott Frank and I was politely asked not to.
That REALLY bothers me because it makes me wonder how much
research he is putting into the original franchise and how much respect he
intends to give to it.
It also means that he’s not looking to the hardcore
fans who have been discussing and researching and fighting (in the name of the
bomb!) over points for years.
If it does not relate to POTA – then call it Lancelot
Link.
But anyway, in light of my recent conversations with
stakeholders, it is seeming most likely that this project is on hold.

Canon just gives a baseline or foundation for others to build upon. When
there is an interesting topic for discussion about the films, I find it less
enjoyable when it is shut down before anyone else has a chance to
comment by citing an old comic story as if that should be the last word on the
subject.
I'm sure that the people who created the
Malibu
comics never considered themselves constrained by what Marvel had done.
Nor was MR constrained by anything
Malibu or Marvel had
done before them. I would also bet that if you asked Ty Templeton or Joe
O'Brien, they would be the first to admit that what they did in Revolution is
not canon and no one else, like Blam! Ventures, should have to alter their interpretation
and creative process to conform to what they did in Revolution.
One of the problems with a decades old franchise that has had
multiple licensees over the years is that there is too many contradictions
and conflicts. Recognizing canon just gives everyone an agreed upon
starting point and we can can go from there. Marvel's Quest for the
POTA and MR's Revolution present two conflicting versions of the events between
Conquest and Battle .
Rather than have one faction declare that because Quest came first
Revolution should be ignored and another faction taking the opposite,
recognizing that neither are canon leave room for both interpretations
and any future interpretations that might make a great story (or
interesting discussion) for fans to enjoy. By stating that
since someone already addressed a particular topic or issue so that's the
final word on it and any future exploration of it is invalid just
stifles creativity.

.htmlI'll give that sentiment a third thumbs up.
I recall that when I first heard of the word canon in terms of what is
considered 'real' vs 'not real' for a fictional piece, I just shook my
head and passed it off as yet another hollywood idea gone bonkers. If a
piece is fiction it's senseless to state that some parts of a story have
more credence than others. You can like some elements more than others,
but to put one part a greater value with respect to reality, when
nothing is real at all... that's just nuts.
Neil's sentiment that he did not care whether it was even called "Planet
of the Apes" or not, did give me something to think about. If it turns
out good then having the POTA moniker will (hopefully) get some people
to see the original. But if it sucks (shades of 2001), then it would
just tarnish the franchise further. I was originally going to oppose
Neil's take, but he may have a point.

Plagiarism? Of what?
Rich’s book outlines the events of
the various POTA universes (movies, TV, toons, comics, novels, scripts) in a
sequential order.
It concludes nothing that’s not been
in the films, TV show etc which are all essential background reading (or if
they are not, then this is not a POTA movie and may as well be called “Lancelot
Link” instead of CAESAR).
What you say makes sense if Rich’s
book were a script but it almost seems Scott Frank wants to start from scratch
with no knowledge of POTA and that’s just silly.
Even if he wants to change it he needs to
research and understand it – embrace it - before doing so.

Did she say, "He's not going to direct it in
a million years" or was it more that the decision of director hasn't been
decided yet until there's a script? In that case, technically he's not the
director but might be down the road.
Fox seems to be doing their sci-fi
franchises pairing a new director with an experienced, famous producer (Robert
Rodriguez on "Predators", Ridley Scott on the "Alien" prequel), so in that sense
Scott might have a shot (if paired with James Cameron or somebody). He did a
good job with "The Lookout" but that didn't make a splash so he would seem to be
a long shot to do an FX franchise like this.
He said in another interview he's a slow
writer (it's hard for him to do TV). Plus he's a hot writer so they keep pulling
him away (farming him out to Tom Cruise, etc.).
But keep up the good work,
Michael.

contributed to his script. People have sued for a lot crazier
stuff.
Plus it's probably point of pride. He doesn't
want someone telling him how to write a script. Or 'his people" don't want to.
And I think this is a new take, not connected
to the originals anyway.
But I agree, it sounds stalled for some
reason.

What worries me is
that I offered to send a copy of Richs book to Scott Frank and I was politely
asked not to.
That REALLY bothers
me because it makes me wonder how much research he is putting into the
original franchise and how much respect he intends to give to
it.
It also means that
hes not looking to the hardcore fans who have been discussing and researching
and fighting (in the name of the bomb!) over points for
years.
If it does not relate
to POTA then call it Lancelot Link.
But anyway, in light
of my recent conversations with stakeholders, it is seeming most likely that
this project is on hold.

Oh, they'll definitely call it POTA because
that's a name that sells (I doubt they'll call it "Caesar"; maybe "Planet of the
Apes: Caesar" - - - though I prefer "POTA:Genesis", starring Phil
Collins).
Scott Frank seemed to be downplaying the
POTA aspect and maybe that's why it's having trouble. As much as people
complained about POTA2001, it was a moneymaker. "Space Chimps" wasn't.

Thanks Jeff but it’s so damned
FRUSTRATING!
All Missy said was “he is writing
the script, not directing” so I agree it seems his directing is not
CONFIRMED but is POSSIBLE.
I just love how wrong the media is!

Re: New Movie Where Art Thou?
Did she say, "He's not going to direct it in a
million years" or was it more that the decision of director hasn't been
decided yet until there's a script? In that case, technically he's not the
director but might be down the road.
Fox seems to be doing their sci-fi franchises pairing
a new director with an experienced, famous producer (Robert Rodriguez on
"Predators", Ridley Scott on the "Alien" prequel), so in
that sense Scott might have a shot (if paired with James Cameron or somebody).
He did a good job with "The Lookout" but that didn't make a splash so
he would seem to be a long shot to do an FX franchise like this.
He said in another interview he's a slow writer (it's
hard for him to do TV). Plus he's a hot writer so they keep pulling him away
(farming him out to Tom Cruise, etc.).
But keep up the good work, Michael.

I’ve been in touch with Missy Davy, who is Scott
Frank’s Personal Assistant.
Her attitude was originally quite friendly, and she’s
still friendly but not at all informative.
She was the person who put me straight about Scott being the
writer, not the director (and all the articles were dubbing him as director so that
tells you haw accurate the press is).
I sent a string of interview questions for “The
Forbidden Zine” and she referred me to a fellow at FOX.
The fellow at FOX emailed me back and said “no
progress, nothing to report, could you please send your phone number so I can
update you”….so I did.
Rory – how can it be in development hell?
It’s only at the writing stage – there’s no actors chosen, no
director…..nothing (and this WAS confirmed by Missy ages ago).
It’s waiting to be scripted – end of story.

BOTH happen, with the Universe splitting apart into two parallel Universes, one where Event A happened, and another where Event B happened. In such a scenario, Every other detail of the original Universe is copied in
both universes -- so that, for example, in one universe (i.e. ours) Abraham Lincoln died as a result of the bullet John Wilkes Booth fired into the back of his head... and in some other parallel universe, Booth's
gun jammed (or he was seen by
somebody who then intervened and prevented him from shooting) and President Lincoln never was assassinated, thus altering that universe's Future.
In theory, somebody in our Universe's future could time-travel back to Ford's Theater on that fateful -- or not-so-fateful -- day, and intervene so as to prevent the assassination of Lincoln. The upshot of
that would be that our universe -- the universe the Time Traveler came from -- would cease to exist: that timeline would be lopped off like a branch from a tree. The Time Traveler will have come from a Future which DID
NOT HAPPEN, even though he -- from his personal perspective -- EXPERIENCED that once-future of a once-universe.
That Lincoln-saving dude will not have "changed" the Future... he will have OBLITERATED one Future, and an entire Universe in the bargain. Just like Spock in the new "STAR TREK" movie, HE will
exist in an altered timeline, but the entire Universe he came from will no longer exist, except -- perhaps -- in some kind of transdimensional parallel universe (like their "Mirror" universe exists parallel to
the "classic TREK" timeline.
In SF, these Time Travel stories are legion. And I don't think such things are truly possible. I see this type of story as a violation of Causality. For example, if a Time Traveler obliterates the Timeline from
"Present" through to the "Future" from which he came, then he will have prevented himself from being born. Oh, a "parallel" version of him may be born in this new Future, but it won't
BE him.
Think of it this way: A Time-Traveler could go back and time and prevent the Lincoln Assassination... but only if he lived in a Universe in which Lincoln never was assassinated to begin with. Thus, the Time-Traveler
could only purposefully prevent the assassination if he knew that in his own historical records it had been recounted that a Time-Traveler from the Future had appeared out of Nowhere and saved the President from an
assassin's bullet. Thus, the Hero wouldn't be "changing" anything... he will be FULFILLING a Causality Loop.
In my opinion, IF time-travel will ever be made possible, the most that will happen is that those Time-Travelers will, by their "interventions," do what Fate dictated HAD to happen. For example, if
somebody were to discover a grave from A.D. 962 containing a corpse of an elderly man whose DNA is discovered to be 100% identical to my own DNA, then I -- in my own Future, as an older version of this Present version
-- will make a journey into the Past (effectively disappearing from the Universe at that Future moment) and wind up dying and being buried in that grave. And if I try to "cheat" that Fate, and NOT go on a
journey to the Past in a Time Machine, what will happen is that somebody will CLONE me at some point and then that genetically identical clone will go back in time to be buried in that grave in the year A.D. 962. Either
way, the corpse of some geezer with my DNA will have ended up in that grave.
Causality demands such. As entertaining as the many many Time Travel stories are, they are usually riddled with Causality violations that just don't hold up. The reason that I don't believe that there are an
infinite number of parallel Universes existing alongside our "real" Universe with its "real" timeline, is that the Universe we live in obeys certain Conservation laws. The conservation of
Mass/Energy... of Momentum... of Angular Momentum... etc. If somebody "leaves" one Universe in order to zip backwards in Time, in order to "change" some Past event which thereby alters Future
History, then this means that the "former" Universe LOST MASS-ENERGY (in the form of the Time Traveler and his Machine), and the "new" Universe had to have GAINED that Mass-Energy. But if each
Universe has Mass-Energy conservation (which Modern Physics insists upon, the last time I checked), then no Universe should be able to "lose" or "gain" Mass-Energy from or to some
"other" Universe.
If Caesar can somehow prevent Doomsday from happening... then he will have prevented his Future fetal-self from having the opportunity to go backwards through Time in the first place. And if he -- in Zira's womb
on 11-23-3955 -- does not go back in Time to 1973, he won't be alive in that Past to even contemplate altering the Future.
Hasslein tried to change the Future and, rather than CHANGING it, he helped to CREATE it, since Caesar's later-in-life trip to the forbidden city would not have happened had he not been orphaned, due to
Hasslein's murderous designs. If not for Caesar's trip to the bombed ruin, Kolp would never have led his army to try to conquer Ape City (having ordered Alma to fire the Bomb if he should fail). And, when he
did fail, and Alma was about to fire the Bomb as per his orders, Mendez then
convinced her (and the other "mutants") that they should "venerate" the Bomb. Thus, the Bomb-worshipping only
happened as a direct result of the actions that Hasslein committed in a futile attempt to alter the Future.

Not really. In fact, for easily

For all those who are head over heels for the
new "Star Trek", here's your cold shower: "Star Trek" has made only slightly
more worldwide than POTA2001. It's done a lot better in North America but all
total, "Star Trek" has brought in $ 379 million to POTA2001's $ 362 million. Add
in POTA's budget of $ 100 million compared to ST's $ 150 million (plus POTA
having come out 8 years ago Monday and the inflation since) and it's logical,
Captain, that it's at least a tie. (thanks to Al for pointing this out).
Of course, "Star Trek" is much more liked
and that will add to it's bottom line (merchandise, DVDs, sequel
audiences), once again showing the value of an actual good movie.
But wait! "Transformers 2", which people
don't seem to like, is the summer's box office champ with $ 785
million worldwide. Oh, this just in: Fox has
officially changed the name of their new movie from "Caesar" to "Planet of the
Apeformers". I should've known!

It was in the original DVD, you didn't have
to send away for it. But I don't scan. Er, um, >cough!< I mean I wouldn't
waste my money on a DVD of that film.
I prefer the postcard Burton sent from the
bank he was laughing all the way to.

Prequels seem to be what the fashionable ape
is wearing. POTA has it's "Caesar" and now there's word of a prequel to "King
Kong" (based on the book "Kong: King of Skull Island"). Apparently not
affiliated with Peter Jackson or the recent remake.

I mean I have seen certain people give them encouragement, but never actually say what they think. Isn't that how people know when what they do stinks (or is wonderful)? When they get honest feedback?
I reallythink they could do some wonderful things (like make audio books of fanfics, put an audio track to BTB....so MANY things they COULD do!) but their adaptation of Planet is SO bad and so NOT WORTHWHILE!

Do you think other POTA fans actually appreciate what they do?
I
mean I have seen certain people give them encouragement, but never actually
say what they think. Isn't that how people know when what they do stinks (or
is wonderful)? When they get honest feedback?
I reallythink they could
do some wonderful things (like make audio books of fanfics, put an audio track
to BTB....so MANY things they COULD do!) but their adaptation of Planet is SO
bad and so NOT WORTHWHILE!

No. It's actually better to have it glued on, and if what is glued on is foam latex. It's so light you wouldn't even feel it..and you can actually sweat through it.

You guys did so well!! I am so jealous I could not have been there. Next year, 2010, can we make a date for SDCC? I've got to attend a big con!!
I find it funny that someone was asking if Lacey was Jess. That's so weird!!!
Wow....how I wish I could have been there.
Jess.

Funny though, someone stopped Lacey and asked her if she was Jess. I didn't see his name.

I'd prefer to sweat through something that to sweat under something that's not breatheable (like latex).
I actually have a Zira pullover (the cheap ones) from Apemania, and it's very claustrophobic in there and it's hard to breathe because the muzzle recirculates your exhale before it makes it out of the mouth.

Sorry to be so OT, but is anybody having a hard time getting onto the Sideshowcollectors forum? It's driving me insane. It's a madhouse, I tell you.
