Not easy, but possible.
As Tom Petty once said,
The waiting is the hardest part.
It seems like an eternity for the
timer to go off. But it's like a ski
boot taking it off. It's the old joke
about the guy hitting himself in the
head with a hammer. When asked
why, he replied, "Because it feels so
good when I stop." To practice should
have tried breathing through straws and
boiled a bag of sand and put that on my
face. Except the sand would have gotten
cooler instead of heating up like Ultracal 30.
Good to have the alginate between me and it.

.htmlThis thread had my name on it, so I respond.
What can I do for people? The thread/response stuff below was fairly confusing, but I think the question is: What's fair compensation for someone's idea, if you use it?
And the answer is- it depends on SO many factors, there's no blanket answer that can cover it.
1) Most writers are interested in feedback, and a sense of what fans are looking for, when they say they're interested in fan's ideas...because they have their own story already, and are looking to tailor
or tweak it for a popular response... If a writer is asking for ideas because they don't have their own ideas, then, obviously, they're not a writer--they're an editor.
2) Does an editor pay for ideas? He does if he's planning to profit from them. The level of profit is part of the formula though. If someone makes a very small print run book that sells less than a
thousand copies, and sells it at a price that more or less pays the cost and time of producing it, or maybe a spare few hundred either way.... then, that's a hobby more than a living, and the ideas that go into that
are probably not going to be paid for, as they're not contributing to a living, but to a hobby. If an editor takes an idea that sells twenty thousand copies and brings the editor a nice fat cheque for thirty
grand, then damn, he better pay up or there's a lawyer at his door.
3) In answer to one question, why should a publisher have all the profits if he's using someone else's ideas, even if it's just a small profit? That's a tricky question, but here's one
answer. The publisher is usually entitled to the first bite at profit (until there's enough to share) because he's the one bringing money into the equation in the first place. An idea is a lovely moment in a
conversation, but it only becomes a PRODUCT if a publisher puts effort and monetary risk on it. Without the publisher, ideas are as valuable as a blade of grass, or a leaf from a tree. But a publisher, pays bills,
pays printers, pays for a Diamond Account, etc.. and takes ALL the risk to the wallet. What did the idea cost the creator? Literally nothing. What did the idea cost the publisher? Perhaps thousands and
thousands of dollars.
Did any of that help anybody? I'm still somewhat confused. Ty On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 11:30 PM,

Did Ty pay us

*** No, he didn't pay anyone that I'm aware of... But, I thought
REVOLUTION was well under way (and had been written, etc.) by the time you
ever had a post from him on here... It's pretty obvious that he didn't listen
to anyone's comments anyhow, as they went along with the bad idea of
gorillas flying planes among other things...
That said, if he or anybody doing a "for profit" comic comes to a message
board like this one and asks for ideas then yes, the creator of those ideas
should be compensated in some way, even if it's a free subscription to the
publication... Why should the one who is producing/publishing it all make any
of the (possible) profits? I'm not saying if anyone wants to freely give
you story ideas and will not care if they get a piece of the end product that
you shouldn't use them, but I'm saying if someone gives you a scripted story
and Neil draws it, etc. then it should be credited to whoever wrote it and not
just "Whitty Productions" or whatever your company will be called... I mean
songwriters have to give credit to someone even if they only came up with the
title or a few lines, why should this be any different? You'd be better off
giving them credit where applicable rather than being
accused plagiarism later on... ***
Anyone who submits
a full story would be paid for that is they ask for payment. Ty might
be able to tell me what people are getting paid (and HOW – per
page….etc?).
*** That's good as far as full stories go, but huge amounts of
comments/ideas might count as "co-writing" wouldn't they? Like I
said, it's up to you as to how you do it, but somebody who comments to the
point of making the story different should have their name on it if they want
it added... ***
However I
anticipate losing shitloads of money and the last thing I need is people
holding their hands out!
*** Somebody making a large contribution to the story and hoping to make
their part in it known is NOT there with their hands out... Someone who is on
this group or the "pota" group that seen that you put out a comic and
comes out of the woodwork saying "Hey, remember me from the potaDG, I did a
post one time that might have given you an idea..." now THAT'S coming to
you with their hands out... ***
So yeah Neil will
be paid, if he chooses to get other artists/colourers they too will be paid,
writers will be paid, but the committee I am putting together would be doing
it for love and a promise that if all my extravagance comes to something I'd
compensate them too.
*** That's good and that's the way it should be...
But, you said you have a committee that will be working with you "for the love
of it", and yet you also say that writers will be paid, colorers/artists will
be paid etc. The question is are you and your group doing all of the stuff at
first for free or will you be hiring free-lance writers/artists to work

That would be great to send in photo's of your POTA t-shirts. Maybe it
would be a good idea for the group website or hunter to have a page of all the
t-shirts available and one's from the past.In like a file. And for those
interested where these t-shirts are available from, and price they cost. I
know i would be interested what about everyone else???? Mark :) --- In

I've uploaded some pics from the San Diego Comic
Con 2008 and 2009. Sorry the application pics aren't complete. When
you're bad at taking photos and someone else gets bored or the camera's
batteries die, this is what happens. Most of the other pics are from the
internet that other people took. I haven't arranged them yet, so 2008 and
2009 are all mixed up.

That's a cool idea! I had an iron-on Apes t-shirt when I was a kid, but I haven't had any POTA-related shirts since then. However, my seven-year-old son has one, so if someone does put together such an
archive, I'll be sure to contribute a photo of the single shirt in my family's possession.

.htmlI think the context in which the ideas are passed from a contributor
to a writer or editor should also factor in. When people engage in
open discussions on the internet so as discussion groups like this,
forums or even blog commentary, unless a clear solicitation agreement
was made beforehand, they should not necessarily expect mometary
compensation. Well at lest not if they know in advance that they are
discussing with writers and that they work in question may end up in a
work for sale. It's one thing to exchange emails but when information
is presented openly without any copyright notice or disclaimer, then
you're pretty much giving away your thoughts freely. If you don't want
to 'give' that stuff away, then don't discuss it openly in the first
place.
I think that people also sometimes forget that a writer not only takes
good ideas to make a story, but also has to put down the words in a
cohesive, thoughful and entertaining manner. And doing that is not
only hard work, but takes talent. A person with a good idea or two
does not necessarily mean that they can write it properly. POTA
happens to be a great example of this evidenced by the great
Wilson/Serling script as opposed to Boulle's idea of a Planet of the
Apes and his subsequent novel. If Boulle's novel were the only
artifact of POTA around, we wouldn't be here as POTA fans today,
because let's face it, it was not a very good book. But it had some
great ideas, and thanks to Wilson and Serling's treatment of those
ideas (and a little hollywod magic), we have a great story. So who do
you credit more?

Sounds like Fox got their wish. According to
"Variety", Sir Ridley Scott is "attached" to direct a prequel to his 1979
"Alien", the movie that spawned a franchise. This is big news in the world of
sci-fi (if it happens). Scott has directed two sci-fi movies, "Alien" and "Blade
Runner", both considered classics. This is certainly a feather in Fox's cap, and
with James Cameron's "Avatar" coming out in December Fox MIGHT be the place to
look again for quality science fiction, as they were once upon a
time.
The down side is they've just hired a writer
and we know how that goes. Scott's involvement probably depends on the script
that develops. The "Apes" prequel has had a writer for a while and there hasn't
been much movement. But this suggests Fox is getting serious about it's
franchises (and attracting top talent). How that will effect POTA remains to be
seen.

*** Agreed... However, it's one thing for them to come to these
groups with a partially completed story and/or artwork and asking everyone to
critique them, but if they'd come to these groups and ask for story ideas
(whether or not they say they could potentially be used as story lines) could
potentially be seen as plagiarism by someone who might want to "cash in" if
their comic line is successful... Whitty and company should cover their a**es
and stay within the little group they have lined up if they're that worried
about everyone coming to them "with their hand out"...
You mentioned Boulle's book and the Wilson/Serling script and their
differences... I agree that the Wilson/Serling script is way better then
Boulle's novel... But, Boulle's novel was the "source material" for the PLANET
film (and the sequels and TV series/animated series) and he is credited as
such... No matter how much better or different the film was than the book there
are enough similarities that Boulle could have sued had he not sold the rights
to his original work. ***

That's why I do it! :)
But originally (the
first post) I was really asking what's a fair price to pay artists (pencils,
colour, etc) and story writers (per page?).
And that would change for people like yourself who are
established and others who have never been published right?
Just
thought you may know the numbers?

That came from the original post but as far as I'm
concerned that's something that develops.
You will recall I sent a draft of BEGINS to you and others
and I received valuable comments from everyone (Greg P said I didn't name
anyone, others demonstrated confusion about some plot points) and I re-wrote it
and we got something that everyone was happy with (except I couldn't work out
how else to re-write the final page, and I think it should be cool with the back
story).
Now, I will be individually naming people and thanking them
when BEGINS is published. However it's still MY story, so I won't be
attributing people as co-writers.
I think things change when it's no longer your story
because of the contributions of others and that's when I think people can say
"if this makes money I want some!".
Now that's all about people communicating - in a group like
the one I've assembled, if someone came up with a story I'd be inclined to say
"go ahead and write it then" and it would be their story, that I would pay them
for. Or if they significantly changed MY story I'd say "OK then what
percentage of this story do you think is yours?" and reach an agreement.
If no agreement is reached, one cannot go forward. If agreement is reached
then it goes to the next step.
It's only a problem if you allow it to
be.
Michael
What can I do for people? The thread/response stuff below was
fairly confusing, but I think the question is: What's fair compensation for
someone's idea, if you use it?

Numbers are as wide ranging as the projects are. For projects like the Simpsons (which sells upwards of a hundred thousand copies worldwide), I get paid about fifteen thousand bucks for
an issue if I write and draw it myself--for stuff like Planet of the Apes, we were paying about two thousand, five hundred bucks and issue for script and art as we were selling less than ten thousand copies per issue.
The page rate is entirely contingent on sales, though there are "standard" page rates for DC, Bongo, Marvel, IDW, etc...these standards are higher and lower, depending on the sales the company can expect for
each title. I think Spider-Man or Batman writers get about a hundred bucks a page to write, and pencilers get something like one hundred fifty bucks a page to pencil, seventy five a page to ink. BUT big stars who
get extra sales get much higher page rates. I get more than the average Batman writer when I write a Batman, but got far less than the average Spider-Man artist when I penciled my Spider-Man miniseries a couple of
years back...because I'm a popular Batman writer, but a fairly obscure Spider-Man artist. Up until fairly recently, the highest rates were paid to folks working for Mad Magazine (over a thousand bucks a page for
art alone) Playboy funnies, and Simpsons comics and books come in a close second. At the other end of the spectrum, Moonstone comics pays out about a hundred bucks a page for script and art and colours
COMBINED!! Mad sold in the hundred thousands, Moonstone sells in the thousands, so the difference is reflected that way.
There is no "industry" standard across the board, as evidenced by the fact that Mad Magazine, the Simpsons and Moonstone's "Night Stalker" comic are all in the "industry". I get
paid less than a third my Simpsons rate when I write a Star Trek book, but I love Star Trek so I did it for that reason. (I also love the Simpsons, and it don't hurt that the money's better!).
So to answer the question, what are the rates? High rates are a thou a page. Low rates are fifty bucks a page. If an artist takes the job for either rate...then that's the standard rate.
It's a little like saying "What's the standard rate to pay an actor to be in a play?" Most theater companies pay the actors a share of the box office, or next to nothing at all. Broadway pays

Thanks Ty that really clears things
up!
Michael
Numbers are as wide ranging as the projects are. For projects like the
Simpsons (which sells upwards of a hundred thousand copies worldwide), I get
paid about fifteen thousand bucks for an issue if I write and draw it
myself--for stuff like Planet of the Apes, we were paying about two thousand,
five hundred bucks and issue for script and art as we were selling less than ten
thousand copies per issue. The page rate is entirely contingent on sales,
though there are "standard" page rates for DC, Bongo, Marvel, IDW, etc...these
standards are higher and lower, depending on the sales the company can expect
for each title. I think Spider-Man or Batman writers get about a hundred
bucks a page to write, and pencilers get something like one hundred fifty bucks
a page to pencil, seventy five a page to ink. BUT big stars who get extra
sales get much higher page rates. I get more than the average Batman
writer when I write a Batman, but got far less than the average Spider-Man
artist when I penciled my Spider-Man miniseries a couple of years back...because
I'm a popular Batman writer, but a fairly obscure Spider-Man artist.
Up until fairly recently, the highest rates were paid to folks working for Mad
Magazine (over a thousand bucks a page for art alone) Playboy funnies, and
Simpsons comics and books come in a close second. At the other end
of the spectrum, Moonstone comics pays out about a hundred bucks a page for
script and art and colours COMBINED!! Mad sold in the hundred
thousands, Moonstone sells in the thousands, so the difference is reflected that
way.
There is no "industry" standard across the board, as evidenced by
the fact that Mad Magazine, the Simpsons and Moonstone's "Night Stalker" comic
are all in the "industry". I get paid less than a third my Simpsons rate
when I write a Star Trek book, but I love Star Trek so I did it for that
reason. (I also love the Simpsons, and it don't hurt that the money's
better!).
So to answer the question, what are the rates?
High rates are a thou a page. Low rates are fifty bucks a page. If
an artist takes the job for either rate...then that's the standard
rate.
It's a little like saying "What's the standard rate to pay an actor
to be in a play?" Most theater companies pay the actors a share of the box
office, or next to nothing at all. Broadway pays their leads ten thousand
dollars per show, and Vegas show stars get fifty grand a night at some of the
big big hotels. Most of the "arts" don't have standards across the board,
like an hourly wage. It depends on the size of the audience, and the
number of slices in the pie.

Actually, it's officially a House of Horror
but there's many POTA items. I don't remember if I've brought this up
before. Daniel Roebuck is an actor with one of those recognizable faces,
he's done a lot of TV shows, was a regular on "Matlock", "Lost". He might
be best known for playing Jay Leno in the TV movie "The Late Show" and got a lot
of attention as the killer in the movie "River's Edge".
He's a big monster and POTA fan. He produced
and directed a show called "Monsterama" which included episodes about POTA
Collectibles and about Apemania. He grew up watching Bill Blake's POTA
characters on "The Gene London Show".
Anyway, here's pictures of his collection

It's a mater of how far you can go on your own.
Can you turn out a comic? Sure. But a feature
film? Doubtful. It's like those Inventor Help Groups.
Yes they will rip you off. But if it's something you'd
never get off the ground at all on your own? Why not?

done a lot of TV shows, was a regular on "Matlock", "Lost". He might be best known for playing Jay Leno in the TV movie "The Late Show" and got a lot of attention as the killer in the movie
"River's Edge".

Taylor is probably the most difficult
to cast. It's easier to think of a new
James Bond than a new Taylor. If I
had to pick one off the top of my head?
I keep coming up with dead guys and
actors who are past it. But . . .
Based on Age, Stature, Star Power
and Acting Chops? Liam Neeson
If I was trying to think of an actor
who could play Ben Hur, Moses
or Taylor? He's my pick. All 3.

If it is I can't
think where it was used in the movie, must be that part that has the ship
without the gold nose cone and without the red & blue hoops going around it!
Also how come the panel bits that should be olive green are black? Plus the red
& blue hoops at the rear part are also too thin and he claims that
it has not been repainted!
Unless the guy has
real proof of what this is and where it came from I don't think I would be

Before I read the description I thought it
was full size!
What it could be is a model they then
based the ship on, but you know what it looks like? The Vacuu-Form “Icarus”
that was the first ever Icarus model (unofficial release). You actually
had to cut it out of the plastic moulding.
It would not surprise me if it’s the
template for that!
Geez there’s a lot of folk selling
bullshit POTA “PROPS” hey?

I've noticed on the POTA group a fellow by the name of William Burge is plastering random photos on the group.
Usually when that happens on the DG we get some really negative, grumpy reactions.
I have a bunch of photos I have been wanting to share but I have been afraid to because it looks like someone is just propping up post numbers.
How does everyone feel about this?
Should we just post zillions of dictures?

nearly always get reposted ad nauseam by everyone involved in the
discussion -- which I hate because it takes up extra space on my hard

in their emails for someone to upload them.
Since they ultimately have to be uploaded anyway, I'd prefer that you
put them online somewhere at the start and then post just one link to
the page.

(Actually, not that pretty. Pretty grim in fact.) Looking for anything at all on the UK Apes show turned up these non-Apes pics of Hoffman's Circus (which included the Apes Show during
their 1975-76 season) from a few years later, in Edinburgh.

I've noticed on the POTA group a fellow by the name of
William Burge is plastering random photos on the group.
Usually when that happens on the DG we get some really negative, grumpy
reactions.
I have a bunch of photos I have been wanting to share but I have been afraid to
because it looks like someone is just propping up post numbers.
How does everyone feel about this?
Should we just post zillions of dictures?

Not that I see.
I don’t think getting dodgey
overpriced props that are not authentic proves much other than that people
generally know there are some insane POTA collectors who pay anything for the
right item.
I think Les Hemstock got burned because
that Liberty
head does not seem genuine….poor bugger if he paid $20,000 for it!
But I think the people who DO pay big for
these props are limited – count ‘em on one hand!

Last night I caught the end of a documentary about the A
bomb called The Day After Trinity. I didn't realise at the time but noticed in
the end credits that the narrator was Paul Frees. Bit of a stretch but it does
sort of tie in with Beneath in an obscure way.
