They are 2 French paperbacks and one Polish paperback that I acquired within the last year or so in my ever more insane quest to collect as many different versions of Boulle's book as I can get my hands on. It's madness I know, but I just can't stop myself!

Strange that they would have the Statue of Liberty on the cover when it has nothing to do with that novel. I know it's just for publicity but you'd think the French would be quite protective and proud of the original novel, having been French.

I remember  me and my friends (we must have been 11 or 12 at the time it was first shown) were told by someone "at school" that they decided to make Space 1999 instead LOL Obviously wrong but we all hated Space 1999 and refused to watch it because we loved POTA so much. LOL.

    I now see what they mean. The back is exactly like the front, which
    means the fabric ends in the middle and a short leather is present. You
    can see how the fabric transitions to leather in the 4th photo from the
    top. You cannot see how it is shortened in the middle, but both this
    reviewer and Jess has pointed that out.

    I've been making a revision of my POTA novel's scenario regarding Breck's city. Until fairly recently I had decided to place the city on the coast of southern California around Latitude 35° 35' to 35° 39' North, and called San Simeon, since that stretch of coastline would encompass San Simeon Point, San Simeon Bay, San Simeon State Park, San Simeon Creek Road, etc. The Hearst - San Simeon State Historical Monument would have been just north of the city, outside city limits.

    My reason, of course, was to tie-in the SAN SIMIAN SENTINEL promo newspaper, which seemed like a valid enough reason: if I'm gonna be a West-Coast proponent, then having a new arcopolis built just prior to the futuristic year of 1991 somewhere on the California coast, it seemed about as good a location as any. And I could, then, imagine that the official newspaper of this city is the San Simeon Sentinel... a name which was changed, for punning sake, to San Simian Sentinel for the promo material.

    The REVOLUTION ON THE PLANET OF THE APES comic, of course, opted for San Diego, which I don't think works as well, but that's their choice. I don't consider that 'canon', though, and liked my idea better.

    However, I have recently come up with a notion that rubs me the right way, and I'm diggin' it better than my San Simeon idea. It's a variation on ideas I've mulled around for my LOGAN'S RUN film novelization. In that LOGAN'S RUN scenario, I had to figure out an exact location for the Domed City, and I figured out what I consider to be the perfect location for it: on the coast of Delaware, a stretch of shoreline called "Slaughter Beach" at Latitude 38° 56' 32.79", which is the same latitude as Mt. Ararat (where Noah's Ark landed), and the site in Greece where Deucalion's ark landed. Also, that Delaware site just happens to be exactly 120° of longitude west of Mt. Ararat, one-third of the distance longitudinally around the world. The "Catastrophe" that is mentioned in the film, then, is a "latter day" version of the Noachian Deluge, the Domed City being the stationary equivalent of an "ark" in which to save a remnant from destruction.

    Interestingly enough, at latitude 38° 56' 32.79" one unit of latitude is exactly 7/9ths that of a corresponding unit of longitude. Basically, you take the latitude and hit the cosine button on your calculator, and Presto! you have the decimal number which represents the smaller size of the unit of latitude, in the above case 0.77777777... or, 7/9ths.

    What does this have to do with my POTA scenario? Well, it got me to thinking about whether or not there might be a latitude on the coast of California -- sufficiently away from already famous cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles -- which could have certain significance, in addition to being close enough to some area which would be ideal for siting Ape City to its north. And I came up with one which, like I said, rubbed me the right way.

    There is a famous number, called the Golden Number, which is equal to 1/2 + the square root of 5 divided by 2, or 1.618033989... It is the limit you get when you divide one Fibonacci Number by its previous one, that sequence being 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, etc etc. You start with 0 and 1, add 'em to get 1 again, then add 1 + 1 to get 2... add 1 + 2 to get 3... add 2 + 3 to get 5, etc etc. The number 1.618033989... has as its square root 0.618033989... and if you square 1.618033989... you get 2.618033989... [i.e. the exact same series of numbers to the right of the decimal point].

    It's a number that entire books have been written about, it's that important a number. If you divide any line by its Golden Section, then the ratio of the whole line to the larger segment is equal to the ratio of that larger segment to the smaller segment, which is what happens when you draw a pentagram -- each side "cuts" each other side at the Golden Section.

    Anyway, through fiddling around with my calculator, I discovered that at latitude 36° 00' 00" North (or South, for that matter), the ratio of longitude to latitude is 1 to 0.809016994... and that smaller number is exactly--EXACTLY--half of the Golden Number: 2 x 0.809016994... = 1.618033989... That number, 36, is exactly one-tenth of the distance around the globe from the Equator.

    So, I got out my Delorme SOUTHERN & CENTRAL CALIFORNIA ATLAS & GAZETTEER to check out this stretch of the California coastline... and it's perfect. It's almost exactly halfway between Monterey and Cambria, smack dab in the midst of the Los Padres National Forest, and due west of the Fort Hunter Liggett Military Reservation.

    One might say that this exact spot, this "golden latitude" part of California, is aesthetically perfect. Many works of art and architecture are based on the Golden Section. Certainly, if Breck himself knows about the numerological significance of Latitude 36, then he would consider it to be just one more thing about his city that is as perfect as he imagines it to be. Other interesting sites on Latitude 36 North are the Strait of Gibraltar, Qingdao (China), Tokyo (Japan), the island of Malta, Aleppo (Syria), Nashville (Tennessee), etc.

    Latitude 36 South almost hits Canberra in New South Wales (Australia), less than 40' of arc away, though the southern tip of the Australian Capitol Territory, which encompasses Canberra, does touch it.

    Some other interesting things about this Golden Location for Breck's city: in Breck's COMMAND POST there is a map table which is rectangular in shape. There are some horizontal lines on it which, I'm supposing, represent streets or avenues. This table-shape suggests that the city itself is rectangular in shape. So... what if the city has a North-South distance that is in a 1-to-1.618... ratio with its West-East distance? What if the "perimeter" that Breck mentions is a Golden Rectangle?

    What I've since done is figure that such a Golden Rectangular dimension to the city might very well be subdivided into a grid of smaller golden rectangles. Thus, I've chosen to make a grid of rectangles of 4 rows and 8 columns, with each smaller grid rectangle being an AREA. Thus, there are 32 rectangular AREA subdivisions on this map... but, with the coastline angling from NW to SE, some of the Areas in the SW corner of the map would be in the Pacific Ocean--six of them, in fact. So, I am labelling the remaining 26 grid Area rectangles alphabetically, with the northernmost row being A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H... the next row starting under "B" with I, J, K, L, M, N, O... the next row starting under "J" with P, Q, R, S, T, U... and the southernmost row starting under "Q" with V, W, X, Y, Z.

    What makes this especially nifty is that the specific details given in dialogue in BATTLE work perfectly. The 6th column of Area rectangles (running N to S) are Areas F, M, S, X, just to the east of Areas E, L, R, and W. The place where Caesar, Virgil, and MacDonald got into the ruined city is called "Entry Point F-6." The top row of Area F would be the 9 Sections numbered 1-through-9... thus, "F-6" would be the 4th one from the Left, as seen from the vantage point of someone from Ape City travelling southward towards the Forbidden City:

    Kolp tells his forces, "All security forces alert! Check out all SECTIONS in AREAS M-5 and R-7 and 8. Apprehend three strangers..." In my grid-design, Area M-5 [i.e. Area M, Section 5] would be directly south of Area F-77, and Areas R-7 and 8 would be directly south of Areas L-79 and 80.

    Caesar's goal is the Archives Section, and Alma refers to the TV monitor which Virgil destroyed as "a TV monitor in R-8, 41-Archives." That is, in Area R there are 81 Sections, and Alma is referencing a corridor connecting two of them: R-8 and R-41, a corridor running from SW to NE, R-41 being the exact central Section of this grid rectangle Area.

    In this design, I have the AVENUES running W-to-E and the STREETS running N-to-S... with one exception: BRECK STREET runs diagonally from the NE corner of Area G to the SW corner of Area V, running diagonally through Areas G, M, R, and V. Also, another road runs diagonally through Areas C, K, R, and X, from NW to SE, and this road I'm calling ACKERMAN WAY, which runs parallel to the Pacific Coast Highway [or PCH, at that place also called the Cabrillo Highway (pronounced kah-BREE-oh), from the Spanish word cabrillas, which means whitecaps, i.e. small waves with white crests].

    The harbor where ships offload Shipment 507 I-for-Indonesia ex Borneo is in Area V, and the road that the truck takes to get to APE MANAGEMENT is Breck Street, northeastward up to Area G, just east of Area F. Since BRECK STREET and ACKERMAN WAY form an "X" shape in Area R as well as in Section 41 (at the exact center of Area R), I'm placing the ARCHIVES SECTION in the "top" or North triangular subsection of Section 41. Thus, R-41 is not only Section 41 of Area R, it is also the Archives SECTION, with "the corner of Breck [Street] and Ackerman [Way]" south of it, in the center of that R-41 section.

    Kolp, speaking to "Area 14 Security" (which I'm suggesting is actually SECTION 14 of AREA R, just 3 sections north of Section 41), asks, "... have you got them in view?" And they answer, "No, sir. We're at the junction of CORRIDOR ELEVEN-M and FORTY-FOUR-W. Subjects will have to pass us..." To make sense of this, I'm suggesting that there is a corridor which runs N-to-S, passing along the border of Areas L and M, R and S, and W and X, and this corridor has its beginning at Section 11 of Area M, jogs westward to Section 10 (which is on the L-M border, to the east of Area L, Section 18; that is, ...[L-18]|corridor|[M-10]|[M-11]|...), and then runs due south until it gets to the two sections ... [W-45]|corridor|[X-37], and then jogs west again to the Junction in Section 44-W (i.e. [W-44]). In between the two ends of this M-11 to W-44 corridor there is a specific JUNCTION where the Security team Kolp talks to is preparing to ambush the Trio, somewhere near the eastern border of Area R, roughly halfway along this corridor.

    The fun part now is to make a map of this city and figure out how the Century City buildings fit onto this 8-by-4 grid. Area R will be the focal point of the city, since it is here (in Section R-41, the exact center of Area R) where Caesar--and, later, Mendez--will learn about the Earth's ultimate fate... and it is said to be "near the old Command Post" where Caesar captured Breck and rescued Lisa. Most of the action will be in this Area R part of the city, with the APE MANAGEMENT scenes taking place in the NW corner of Area G.

    One last thing: the NAME of this city. Since I'm situating this city on Latitude 36° N, which is related to the Golden Number, then perhaps a name referencing "gold" in some way... Maybe something like Chrysopolis or Chryseotopia, to use Greek roots. Chrysos means gold, and chryseos means golden. Polis, of course, means city; and topos means place (as in Utopia, from the Greek Ou- and topos/topia, meaning No-Place, since More's Utopia didn't really exist). The only place-name that I can find in this locale, on my Delorme atlas, is a small wedge that juts out into the ocean, called Rockland Landing, about half a mile north of Latitude 36° N, on Longitude 121°31' W. Thus, the city itself could take the name Rockland. Hmm... maybe. I'll mull that one over a bit more.

    Alternatively, I could call Breck's city Las Cabrillas, since the Cabrillo Highway (part of the PCH) goes through it... but the Cabrillo Highway name is prominent from at least as far south as 34° 30' N all the way up to 37° N (the northernmost latitude on that particular Delorme atlas). Ah, decisions... decisions...

    Am I on "moderation"? Did I do or say something to cheese somebody off? Am I the only one here having his/her messages "waiting for approval" by the moderators? I'd like to know. I'd also like to know if I shouldn't bother posting here anymore, if the above is the case.

    If you are on moderation Patrick it's a mistake.

    At times the entire group is placed on moderation because we get looneys trying to join us up to sex cults who latch on to others' IDs.

    Whan this threat disappears, we then take everybody off moderation, and sometimes we forget some.

    Of course we don't just hit the one button because there are those on the group who have never posted, who could have joined just to tell us about Biker Whore groups.

    When people first join up we leave them on a SPAM FILTER (OK, syntax but it's NOT moderation) until they post a POTA related message. If they post about Biker Whores, we delete them from our group.

    If anyone else thinks they could be on moderation too let us know and we'll have a look.

    So, it's no wonder that the French would still be glad to see the Statue on the cover. It was Pierre Boulle who didn't like that the film had the Statue scene, and I'm sure he's not too happy in his grave knowing that the French publishers are putting it on the cover!

    Still, if I had the money to finance a faithful-to- the-novel film adaptation, I'd have a French director do it (probably Luc Besson, since he's done good work) with an all-French cast, with all the dialogue true to the novel. And... at the end, when Ulysse Merou and Nova (and their son Sirius) take off again from Orly Airport, I would put in a shot where some apes are watching that launch from their vantage point on that spot where the French (smaller) version of the Statue of Liberty stands -- and have the face on it be simian, of course. That would be the only "nod" to the 1968 film that I would put in it.

    I now see what they mean. The back is exactly like the front, which
    means the fabric ends in the middle and a short leather is present. You
    can see how the fabric transitions to leather in the 4th photo from the
    top. You cannot see how it is shortened in the middle, but both this
    reviewer and Jess has pointed that out.

    Luc Besson would be an excellent choice to direct an Apes movie in my opinion. I have his first movie on dvd: Le Dernier Combat (The Last Battle) which is set in a post apocalyptic future and is visually stunning. The Fifth Element was pretty good too.

    What is also strange is that over all the time since the book was first published there have been hardly any covers that I know of that actually depict anything that happens in the story. Almost every cover has been movie related or totally abstract.

    Let me clarify.

    I was perusing the POTADG message board.

    I wanted to post a message regarding my new notions about mapping Breck's city.

    I could have gone to the bother of opening up my Yahoo Email account, composing an email there and then sending it to the DG message board, but there were two reasons why I didn't do it that way:

    1. I didn't have the email address for the DG site memorized, and I would need to fill in that email address in order to SEND the email.

    2. It is much easier, when already online with a POTADG homepage up-and-running, to simply go to the upper left hand corner and select POST from the list HOME, MESSAGES, POST, ATTACHMENTS, FILES, PHOTOS, LINKS, DATABASE, POLLS, CALENDAR... then open up a New Window, and start typing. That way, the addressee [the PotaDG] is already automatically there in the "To: " box at the top... my own name and email address is automatically in the "From:" line... and all I had to do was type in a "Subject: " and then start typing.

    The vast majority of the time, when I post to the DG -- or to any Yahoo group -- it is via this method, just because it is the easiest if I don't know the group's email address off the top of my head.

    At times I will REPLY to a post directly from my Yahoo email account, if I'm not surfing the group website's message board; the addressee's email address is always there when you do a REPLY to a specific email. But when I post a brand spankin' new message, and can't remember the exact email address, it's just easier posting directly at the group site.

    So, when I say that I "had" to post from the DG site directly, it's entirely due to my not having memorized the address [PotaDG@yahoogroups.com]. Capisce? I still don't know how my first attempt to post that Breck's City message resulted in an Approval Required response. It's the first time that sort of thing has EVER happened to me, regardless of whether or not I was posting directly from the group site or from an email account.

    Now, if you'll kindly excuse me, there's a biker chick I gots ta bang. Getcher motor runnin'...

    It's interesting to see how POTA imagery seems to have been appropriated by Street artists / outsider artists quite a lot in the last few years.

    I wonder why this is ... may be it's because Apes had some real ideas behind it and even if the artist them selves aren't directly referencing those ideas it makes the imagery more appropriate for expression and gives a bit more resonance than  some more modern films like say, Starwars (He says with a whisper....)

    I wonder why this is ... may be it's because Apes had some real ideas behind it and even if the artist them selves aren't directly referencing those ideas it makes the imagery more appropriate for expression and gives a bit more resonance than  some more modern films like say, Starwars (He says with a whisper....)

    I was wondering if this is just an Aussie/US thing but thankfully it seems more a “there was no internet then to deliver such news” thing.

     

    It was really very confusing for me to work out just what had finished and when – I recall getting excited to see RETURN on the TV too and then it stopped/came back on/stopped again/started again….it was all over the joint!

    I do know that I was aware BATTLE was the final in the movie series, but it was ADVERTISED as such…

    I was too young to comprehend at the time.  I think I must have turned the tv on weekly at that time looking for it.  When it finally dawned on me that they were never going to show it again, I would scan the TV guide and live for an announcement of when the original movies would be reshown.  My heart still skips a beat when I see an announcement (via print or e-mail) that one of the TV stations is going to show the movies.  Once spotted, I would announce to my sisters that on such and such date, forget about watching their shows becaues my apes would be on and come hell or high water, it was me in front of the TV and my apes.  Unfortunately I have never outgrown this and still insist on rewatching the same movies over and over.
