Hmmm….it’s a cultural thing
Mike.
This adaptation stayed fairly true to the
movie actually – except for this outrageous half man/half woman that
tears itself apart and something I’m yet to reveal (let’s just say
they take some LIBERTYs!).
I think somehow this is how they explain
things…hard to put into words.
But you ain’t seen nothing yet –
the other Manga I bought that seems to be PLANET and
BATTLE is WAY more out there!
Again, probably just how they tell their
stories…

Dario, I think this is the way it was understood that Zira and Cornelius were
experimenting on humans.
I even think the person writing the script
may have just interpreted “performed experiments on humans” as “cut
men and women in half and stitched them together” and said to themselves “silly
white Anglos….but if it’s in the story…..”.
However when I show the other big
departure in the 1971 Manga, we might conclude these departures are more for
dramatic effect……?!?

He DOES look like a Thunderbird. The ship looks great, but I'm not so sure about the human and ape faces. Overall, the artwork is pretty good and colour pages are very well done.

Chronicles' quotes Rod Serling's draft script from 17 December
1964:
"As sections of earth, loosened by the explosions [at the
archaeological site], begin to shift and move and then sink. This movement
takes the form of a running line like an earthquake fault snaking across the
ground until it reaches one point and from the earth emerges a GIANT METAL
ARM..."

Well he only prints the different revisions of the last scene, but I think he might have mentioned something significant like that if it HAD appeared. Another thing is that at this point in
the script revisions the apes are still flying around in helicopters, etc, so maybe it really is just a coincidence. I'm just wondering now if someone watching the movie first time around could make an assumption
that the statue was somehow uncovered by the explosion. Probably not, I think...

but once you start, it becomes almost just as natural as reading it
the 'traditional' way. No big deal really. Kinda cool when you think
about it. Expand you horizons. Another 'skill' to add to your resume.
And once you master it, you'll be able to pick up any other Manga
without fear!
