I chatted to Neil briefly tonight about
this and he has flipped some pages and says it really does make things far
easier for our brains to comprehend…so we’ll see!
What do others think about this?

I
wouldn't bother. It takes a few minutes to get used to it at first,
but once you start, it becomes almost just as natural as reading it
the 'traditional' way. No big deal really. Kinda cool when you think
about it. Expand you horizons. Another 'skill' to add to your resume.
And once you master it, you'll be able to pick up any other Manga
without fear!

| Subject: Forbidden Zone Prime--a "lost" Marvel Comics tale |
.htmlHi, folks,
Some time back, I unearthed an unpublished page from Marvel, containing a chimp named Viraga. For a while, that was the only known page from that story, until last year, when three more pages surfaced.
Now, I've located six more, thanks to POTA fan Ed Haber, bringing the total known pages up to 10. Those pages are now available on Hunter's site, in the Marvel Ultimate Edition section. The new pages contain a
title for the story, "Forbidden Zone Prime," and offer a much better idea of what it's about.
Unfortunately, we still don't have the page listing the artist, who remains a mystery, nor do we yet know how long the tale is. But I'm starting to have faith that the rest of the story may some day emerge!
Enjoy!

Prime--a "lost" Marvel Comics tale
Hi, folks,
Some time back, I unearthed an unpublished page from Marvel, containing a chimp
named Viraga. For a while, that was the only known page from that story, until
last year, when three more pages surfaced.
Now, I've located six more, thanks to POTA fan Ed Haber, bringing the total
known pages up to 10. Those pages are now available on Hunter's site, in the
Marvel Ultimate Edition section. The new pages contain a title for the story,
"Forbidden Zone Prime," and offer a much better idea of what it's
about.
Unfortunately, we still don't have the page listing the artist, who remains a
mystery, nor do we yet know how long the tale is. But I'm starting to have
faith that the rest of the story may some day emerge!
Enjoy!

Same here, when I
read 'Japanese style' I find I have to think about what I'm doing which is
distracting. I have a few mangas and have regularly 'read' them and still find
myself thinking about how I'm reading them every time. I'm sure like Dario says
it becomes easier but I would still prefer to read them 'English style' myself
but whether just reversing the pages will work I'm not sure, we'll end up with
the gorillas' bandoliers going the wrong way and stuff .That leaves a very
time consuming alternative.

Maybe it wasn't just a straight translation though, they might have taken liberties when dubbing the film into Japanese aswell. They could have embellished the dialogue to suggest other
stuff was happening. What is it they say about Dr Galen during the trial scene, that he and Zira were performing experiments or something?

Maybe we could see a side-by-side comparison of a flipped page? Maybe it could be used for most paages with just the most obvious pages needing re-arranging? (Statue of Liberty springs to
mind)

Any time. I practically drooled when Ed Haber told me what he had in
his possession. Unfortunately, I'm STILL no closer to figuring out
who drew it, as Sonny Trinidad's family is adamant that it wasn't
him, despite the evidence. If only the credits page had been among
them. I also hope we soon find the last page, so we can figure out
how many more pages are missing. Since issue #30 was supposed to be
a double-issue, and since the grim ending of the story (as revealed
in the opening panel) is nowhere near to happening in the 16 pages we
now know of, this might have been a rather long story, which would
mean there's a lot left to find.

>Wow, well done Rich I'm downloading this right now, thanks.
Enjoy! The story, now that we have some context to it, seems like it
might have been one of the best of the Marvel run, so it's really a
shame that it was never published. <.html

A quick note about page-flipping. Although I've never been a fan of manga at all, I have read some because there have been both Star Wars and Star Trek mangas in the past (none of them
very good...basically, I wasted my time). One thing that I noticed with page-flipping is that any numbers in artwork end up backwards--and if you re-letter in English, the word balloons are now in the wrong order. So
it could require some extra work if you do translate.

I wouldn't bother.

Neil and I met up today and Neil has taken
the Mangas home to copy.
First he is paying most attention to the
older one (and we found some more weird shit in that too).
But yes of course eventually all will be
shown.
The way things are going we might just
email to people privately because we are a bit shocked (and even more
disappointed) that there really only seems to be 5 or 6 people in this group
who think it’s worth saying something about the manga.

I'm very curious about the dinosaur, which just seems to come out of left field. Then again, we have seen other giant mutated creatures in POTA: Kygoor and the flying serpent, from the
cartoon, and giant reptiles in the novel Colony. And Doug Moench, had he continued Terror on the Planet of the Apes, would have introduced Her Midgitsy, a giant gorilla trapped by humans.

Okay here's the
first page of the dinosaur sequence from the second version of Planet. I think
they may have been influenced by the cartoon series and added a monster to the
lake into which the spaceship crashes or something!
I prefer the
artwork of this version much more than the first, earlier version and
though it does have a couple of strange variations like the dinosaur they are
not as numerous as the other version.

Also from the
second version of Planet is a 4 or 5 page sequence that has, as far as I can
work out, Stewart being woken up early by some sort of malfunction. Once
'awake' it seems that she can't go back into hibernation. Also there are
actually 5 astronauts on this version of the mission and after Stewart has
apparently been awake for many years she goes a bit bonkers and starts
destroying stuff to get the other astronauts to wake up but seems to be stopped
by the one astronaut she does manage to wake . It then looks like he decides to
carry on the mission with her and when the ship finally crashes Taylor and the
boys find 2 mummified ancient bodies on the cabin floor!

Here's another
mirrored page to compare.

Maybe we could see a side-by-side comparison of a flipped page? Maybe it
could be used for most paages with just the most obvious pages needing
re-arranging? (Statue of Liberty springs to mind)

To be fair though,
the Stewart thing and the dinosaur in the lake are just about the only major
weird departures in this second version of Planet, most the rest is very
faithful to the movie.
Neil T. Foster
I think the people who did these mangas were on some serious
drugs.

You wait until we
get to the Battle adaptation, Caesar has a dune buggy which they use to get
to the ruined city! Also Virgil and Macdonald smoke cigarettes to relax after
the big fight and at the end of the story the humans, apes and mutants all
become friends as far as I can tell from the pictures!!

there)
Neil T. Foster
I'd love to know what the name of the fifth astronaut is.

Okay
here's the first page of the dinosaur sequence from the second version of
Planet. I think they may have been influenced by the cartoon series and added a
monster to the lake into which the spaceship crashes or something!
I prefer the artwork of this version much more than
the first, earlier version and though it does have a couple of strange variations
like the dinosaur they are not as numerous as the other version.

Here's what Jackie Earle Haley (Kraik, the
boy from the TV show ep "The Legacy") looks like as Freddy Krueger, based on the
new action figure. This figure deserves a place right next to your figure of
Haley from "Watchmen".

With the limited appeal of comics to most POTA fans and the fact that it is going to be a monumental task to translate these things I don't think it's going to be worth doing it.
I'm sure that if it I was translating all this I would want to be compensated for all that work which brings up a huge problem - who would be willing to pay for it to be done? I know in the past there has been
appeals for donations from the fans to get rare stuff purchased or worked on and it's never happened. Can't see anything being different

Well, another Thanksgiving is upon us. A year
ago it was announced on the Fox Movie Channel that they were doing a new POTA.
Soon thereafter, Scott Frank revealed the details and that it was going to be
called "Caesar". Since then...nothing official.
But hey, they'll do it later. That's what I'm
worried about, "later". "Later" they'll ask James Cameron to direct. "Later"
they'll ask Brad Pitt to star. "Later" they'll make "Caesar". Fox thinks we have
all the time in the world. How much time has the world got?!
Somebody has to begin to care!
Happy Thanksgiving

I agree.
Apes fans are a particularly mean and
stingy lot when it comes to anything other than criticizing what others do.
The scope of this project is enormous, and
there are serious risks to the original magazines that I am not too keen to
take (and I’m less keen as I think more about it).
That aside, if we do get everything
scanned, we’re going to have to manipulate at least 250 pages and just
doing a mirror flip won’t work so that’s MORE time.
Then the scripting of the translations –
I believe some Japanese characters are WORDS! So how are we going to fit
these in the balloons?!?!
This is still something I want very much to do, but the practicalities are
being absorbed by the realities.
If we were generation mega discussion I
might reconsider but really we’d be better off emailing updates to about
4 people privately.

If you do decide to go ahead, you should make sure that each page is
scanned in only ONCE and thereafter all work should be done to the
save scanned pages. It means that you will only risk 'working' with
the original one time. Once you have those scans you make sure that
you seal and store the original for good. Even your own leisure 'read'
of the magazine can be done with the scanned pics, or a printout of
them. But if you think that the original is to fragile to risk even
that, then I would understand and respect your decision not to mess
around with them. The last thing I want to hear is that this copy was
damaged by mishandling. We don't know how many of these still exist so
I would hope that those we do know about are well taken care of.

Good point! It never occured to me that that may be the case. Not much
you can do there other than making bigger word bubbles or using
smaller font size to cram in the translated text into the existing
bubble.
Having said that, it think that all the weird story deviations in this
Japanese versions are fascinating. The Japanese have always had
considerably different social norms compared to the western world, and
these POTA adaptation is yet another glimpse into that world. I know
the POTA 'purists' don't think much of these mangas, but I think
they're interesting. Whether we get eventually have translations or
not, thanks for sharing.

Well like I did
say apart from the few weird goings on the majority of the comics do actually
follow the films (and have some great artwork). Here's a couple of cleaned up
pages from version 1 of Planet that are fairly faithful to the
film.

Which version of Word are you using? Maybe you just need to reinstall your Adobe Acrobat? Mine was acting crazy and leaving lots of spaces between words--they reinstalled the software,
so instead of printing it to .pdf, I save it as a .pdf and it's behaving.

Tvshowsondvd.com is reporting that one of their
sources pssst!ed them about the classic TV anthology series "Twilight Zone"
coming to blu-ray.
What does that have to do with POTA? Are you
stoopid? The man most associated with the show is host/creator Rod Serling, who
was a screenwriter on the original POTA, plus worked on early versions of
"Beneath" and the TV show. Some have sensed a certain similarity in tone between
the first POTA and T.Z. Plus there's Ape actors in it, including Roddy McDowall
in the very Apeish "People Are Alike All Over".
HD transfers of the show were made for the
standard DVD "Definitive Collection" (which I guess won't be so definitive now)
so it should look great. If it happens, this will make T.Z. the oldest TV show
on blu-ray.
The post also notes the anthology show
"Thriller" (hosted by Boris Karloff) will be coming to standard DVD. This rare
series included Natalie Trundy and Leslie Neilsen (who drove her to the studio
that week) in the first episode.

that is a good point
do these manga comics have copyright dates in
them?
if they do date from the 60s they would be the

There's a short interview with Nimrod Antal
about Fox's reboot of the "Predator" franchise.
As has been noted for a while, Fox seems to
be going "filmmaker friendly" with their sci-fi movies now, bringing back the
guys who made the earlier versions acclaimed and successful (Ridley Scott back
for the "Alien" prequel, David Cronenberg swatting "The Fly" again).
In the case of "Predator", the figure head is
an independent guy. Like his movies or not, Robert Rodriguez goes his own way,
making his movies away from the studio system. He's not directing the movie, but
the fact that they seem to be calling it "Robert Rodriguez's Predators" says
something that Fox wants to court the fans back (Rodriguez was offered POTA
before Burton did it but turned it down because he didn't like the heavy hand
the studio was applying).
So perhaps they will enlist a top filmmaker
for the new POTA and let them go for it. Or maybe that was the problem with Tim
Burton's POTA?
In any case, we'll see how Fox's current
approach pans out next summer when "Robert Rodriguez's Predators"
bows.

I'm giving myself time away from Burke so that I can see him with fresh eyes, so that I can get him as close as possible before curing. I will make casts available...maybe in a month

This is his current status, but obviously he needs lots more massaging...and I also need to fire up the DVD so that I can see his profile and get clearer images:

Thanks, Chris. I am so glad you like him. I remember
that you said that the Dragon Toys Eric head did not really look like
him, but at that time I just started sculpting and the best I could do

I'm still futzing with Virdon. He's got a long way

Thanks, Chris. I am so glad you like him. I remember that you said that the Dragon Toys Eric head did not really look like him, but at that time I just started sculpting and the best I could do was the
hair.
I'm still futzing with Virdon. He's got a long way to go. I'm also going to resculpt my Galen from scratch because I think I can do a better job now.
Jess.

Jessica,
That is GREAT! I am sssoooo glad to decided to do this, I am really looking forward to your Virdon. Please make these sculpts available to the group, I have waited years for these 2 humans to be in 1/6
scale. Thank you again!
