I can't speak for anyone else's sales or memberships, of course, but I can say that it's been 15 months since the release of the timeline book, and we're still getting
orders every day on Amazon. And many of those buying the book have written to ask when the encyclopedia is coming out. I also know that the BLAM! booth received a lot of attention, and that anticipation is high for the
first novel.
I note the above, by the way, for one reason only: to point out that there ARE a good number of fans out there spending money on a POTA product if they know it exists. It's a matter of reaching them. POTA fandom
seems to be a very unusual fandom. A lot of other fandoms go nuts spending money left and right, and being very vocal. But POTA fandom is different, for some reason. Fans are a lot more difficult to reach. It
doesn't mean they're not out there--but they're a tough nut to crack. That said, the POTA Facebook group has a LOT of people in it, and they've been receptive to the timeline book via e-mail. You might
try posting about the zine there. We saw a sales spike when I did.
(The encyclopedia will hopefully be out this summer, in case anyone is interested...plug, plug. I took a break from writing it for a few months since I was overwhelmed by POTA after editing the first draft of Conspiracy,
and since I was still reeling from my dad's death, but I'm back to it now and am currently writing the second draft.)
Exposure is key when it comes to publishing. The timeline book was reviewed on the blogs of several sci-fi writers, including Robert J. Sawyer and John Kenneth Muir (the latter, incidentally, will be providing a forward
for the encyclopedia), and that got people to notice it was on Amazon--and now that it is on Amazon, it shows up on people's suggestion lists, so it self-propagates, with little effort on our part at this point.
It's not a bestseller by any stretch of the word--but sales are steady, and every month I get a decent check from Amazon. Our entire overhead was covered in the first month or two--after that, it's been nothing
but profit, as we have zero monthly overhead. (We use a print-on-demand model, and our only recent expenses have been to pay for artwork for the second book, which we'll make back upon its release.) I'm positive
a POTA magazine could do as well if marketed properly.
Having a Web presence helps. The Hasslein Books site shows up on the first page of Google results if you type "Planet of the Apes book" or "planet of the apes timeline" on the search line. (Probably
because there aren't a lot of sites out there about Planet of the Apes books or timelines. Heh heh.) We've also used eBay, Craig's List, Google Ads, Facebook, MySpace and a number of other resources.
So we're lucky--it's still selling at the same steady pace now as when we first released it in late 2008. If you want to get the magazine out there where people will see it, a Yahoo group probably isn't the
best place to market it, as you have a very finite audience by its nature--one that doesn't grow much with time. Go with Amazon, guys, or Lulu, or some other print-on-demand vendor that will make sure your magazine
gets noticed without costing you any overhead. Recently, for instance, Amazon added a program whereby they now market the timeline to wholesalers for us. If you go P-O-D, it'll sell, and you WILL make your money
back. Several-fold.
You could also try sending comp copies to big-name bloggers with large followings who are outspoken about their love of POTA, such as Sawyer or Muir, or Doctor K, and ask them to review it for you. Or try setting up a
free giveaway with a sci-fi site, like Sci-Fi Universe. Reviews and contests can be good sales boosters.
In addition--and this is vital--issue a press release. When it was time to release the timeline book, we issued press releases to a few dozen PR sites, as well as several sci-fi and literature blogs/sites, and that, I
think, in addition to the bloggers and reviewers who promoted it for us, made a difference. As the press releases circulated, notice of the book kept showing up on Google Alerts. Press releases are your friends, and you
can find sample releases online to help you generate the proper marketing copy.
I'm willing to bet you'd see a big spike if you got the word out there. I know you're concerned with copyrights and so forth, but it's not as big a concern as you might think--even if Fox did notice, the
worse that would happen would be a cease-and-desist, at which point you'd simply stop selling it on Amazon. There wouldn't be a lawsuit, as it wouldn't be worth their time or money to pursue one, given that
they'd pay more for a lawyer than they could possibly collect--they'd just want you to remove the infringing materials. And by that point, you'd have made your sales, and by offering a subscription,
you'd be able to retain a number of those who picked up the first issue, even without Amazon. More likely, they'd never even make a peep about it.
The important thing is not to give up due to a lackluster first attempt. Publishing is a very harsh world, and print is really suffering as a medium. If Ty is reading this, I'm sure he'd agree with me on this.
Five years ago, a magazine I worked for folded, and I found myself out of work for six months before I found my current position. I know many other editors and artists who ended up facing the exact same fate, and still
are. If you read foliomag.com, the primary business news site for the publishing industry, you'll see nothing but bad news, day in and day out. The landscape is bleak. But that doesn't mean you can't be
successful--many are. It just means having to work harder to achieve it, that's all.
I loathe Kevin Costner as an actor, almost as much as Zira loathes bananas. However, there's a line of wisdom from Field of Dreams that comes to mind right now: If you build it, they will come. It may not be in
droves, or be big enough to sell out a ball park in a cornfield, but they'll eventually show up.
Okay, I relinquish the conch now. My fingers hurt. <.html

Just curious, as it was the anniversary of POTA's first
showing did anyone here actually 'celebrate' it by watching the film again?

IÂ’m going ahead with
the magazine Jess. Just for the hell of it and to say weÂ’ve done it and if
it sells 50 we will only lose about $600 and we may do it
again.
There were a few typos
so it isnÂ’t quite ready for print as we thought it was.
As I have said before
there are very few POTA fans in the world.
There are the “casual”
fans who say “I love that show” and you/they don’t know which movie/show they
are referring to.
But when we all recall
our childhood and ask ourselves the question, itÂ’s a lonely place the Planet of
the Apes. There were rarely any other kids who liked it enough to buy a
Mego or a Lunch Box were there? Maybe one at your
school?
ThereÂ’s just so few
fans.
Incredible – the
ADVENTURE comics outsold any other first issue comics in the day (but could not
manage to survive more than a couple of years – likely killing of a few more
thousand fans!). And that shitty Burton movie
smashed all recordsÂ…so there were still numbers back then (and a few more
millions fans would have been killed off then!).
I think itÂ’s a case of
increasingly worse budgets, scripts and outcomes that have reduced the fans to
probably 200 worldwide who really take POTA seriously.
This is why I get
really angry that certain groups falsely inflate their numbers to seem to be
around the 1,000 mark. Everyone here knows itÂ’s impossible, but people
like Drew doing research on the viability of a project are being fooled into
thinking thereÂ’s 1,000 fans in just one group and then they start to
publish/promote and get orders for 10 posters!
Unbelievable.
Not just that Jess bit
the fans that are left, 90% of them are too tight to part with $20 to keep apes
alive. They take whatÂ’s free and know that everythingÂ’s eventually free so
why pay? TheyÂ’ll have this fanzine to download in a year or so
anyway.
And 90% of a hundred is
90 tight assed “fans”.

I finally did get to watch Dances with Wolves last
night. It was a really great movie. Very long but I didn't mind it
at all. It was beautiful. I now want to make that Pawnee indian that
attacked the Sioux camp in 1:6 scale just for fun. So many things I want
to do!! When they surrounded the Pawnee as he was trying to get away with
his horse in the river...and the Sioux all shot at him together as they formed a
circle around him--it was overkill. Incredible that in that instance there
they didn't have any friendly fire. It would have been funny if all
the Sioux fell dead and the Pawnee was left there on his horse. But all
kidding aside, it was a very enjoyable movie. I can't believe it's 25
years old now.
So...how are the numbers churning for your
magazine?
I noticed in the last Trek convention I went to that
there are a LOT of Trek fans. What happened to all of the ape fans?
Have they died off with old age? How come there aren't any ape
conventions? Granted...Trek did last several years on TV and had time to
generate fans...but still.

Chris Nolan, director of the rebooted "Batman"
franchise, is said to be doing double duty as a "consultant" on what the f
Warner Bros. should do with their stalled "Superman" series. Supes is kind
of in the same boat as POTA; the last movie did well but not great and left a
lot of fans disappointed. Personally, I liked "Superman Returns". Well, most of
it. It was kind of like the "King Kong" remake by another filmmaker revisiting
his passion: a lot of good stuff but some over the top stuff that didn't
work as well, and too long. I think Bryan Singer is a good director with a
passion for telling relevant stories (now that he's back in the Fox stable I
wouldn't mind his taking POTA for a spin, though he's spoken for by "X-Men").
But his incorporating elements from the original Christopher Reeve flick was
confusing, and borrowing the original's silly plot was a killer.
In any case, the movie didn't do as well as an
expensive tentpole should and it was a poor return on what, like POTA, had been
in development a long time. Even Tim Burton was involved in 1998 and if it had
worked out he probably wouldn't have done POTA. But the plug was pulled on him
(according to the book "Superman vs. Hollywood", Burton was offered "Superman" a
second time after the "success" of his POTA but he declined). Despite their
misgivings, Warner Bros. wants a (drum roll please) new "Superman" movie anyway.
The idea of bringing in a "consultant"director who seems to know what he's doing
artistically as well as financially seems like a good one. Should Fox do that
with POTA? In a sense they've already done that by bringing in "godfathers" like
Ridley Scott for the "Alien" prequel and Robert Rodriguez for the "Predator"
reboot (the word on "Predators" is pretty good; it comes out this summer). Who
would make a good POTA consultant (this could be someone big since they wouldn't
actually direct)? Maybe it would be another avenue to Save
Our Apes.

It really would be nice to know the actual numbers as it could help us decide whether it really is worth carrying on doing these various Apes projects.
If you are getting plenty of orders everyday then it would certainly encourage me to carry on as the lack of interest from these groups certainly doesn't fill me with any confidence.

it would be interesting to see if there are any other Ape noises on it.....but I ain't payin 600 bucks to find out!!!
You can open a PDF file to see the track list......but it 's all generic.....but I bet at least some of them like "Frightened Crowd" or "Flame Thrower" or "soldiers crossing
bridge"....were used in APES....

That sound just before Taylor's ship crashes is also the sound of Adam West's Batmoblie. I bet listening to just the sound effects you could identify multiple sources for each sound.

Wow. That price is crazy. Even if I owned a "Broken Seas" type audio production company or made my own films I can't see that price being worth it. It also shows that many
distinctive sounds are no longer copy righted & you might as well lift them anyways.

The original POTA made the list of the 50 most racist
movies. In fact it clocked in at # 2 ("Breakfast at Tiffany's" was numero uno).
The way they are written up it seems like a lark (I didn't check to see if any
other "Ape" movies made the list). Make of it what you will. Eric Greene called
the "Ape" films the most perceptive movies about race ever, so there's all kinds
of opinions.

He did say that and then some... Too bad he didn't read this quote from
McDowall before he wrote the section about the TV series (from
http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/Roddy_McDowall):McDowall didn't consider the TV show
to have the kind of social and political themes associated with the movies:
"The apes mistreat humans in the same way that humans mistreat each other
today. I don't think this point is directed at any particular ethnic situation.
It's just that the fabric of the show's material seems to cover all the
kinds of prejudice and injustice we are guilty of. But basically, the show is
just great entertainment. And if you try to read into it any deep, momentous
undercurrents, you risk becoming a terrible bore."
I guess even Roddy would have thought that the TV series section was too
out there... ;)

Here's a pleasant surprise. Mark Altman is writing
blu-ray columns for thedigitalbits. He's been around as a commentator on pop
culture and produced the great movie "Free Enterprise", which is loosely based
on his life (I believe the guy who played Will on "Will and Grace" played
Altman). Those who have seen the movie know there's some loving nods to POTA
(especially POTA laserdiscs) - - - damn, I've gotta watch that movie again. So
it might not be a surprise that Altman has chosen the POTA blu-ray set as
the # 2 best DVD collection of the past decade. This is all DVDs, not just
blu-rays (it even beat the almighty "Citizen Kane", among others). This is
a column I'm going to check out more often. The guy has taste.

Hey Michael how is the progress on printing issues
coming?
did you get my email about me buying a few so I
have some on hand as I promote it on the FanClub website?

There are some movies with pretty good CGI that works

face. That kind of CGI I can take.
I was not going to watch Avatar just because it was
CGI...but because of all the excitement about the leaps and bounds of the CGI
they used, I had to see for myself.

Hi Terry
The magazine is with the printers but we
have had some issues with setting up the full colour bleeds and a few other
technicalities.
We believe we’ll be printing on
Monday.
Yes – sure you can buy a few and
sell them on your website. Thanks for the offer.

did you get my email about me buying a few so I have some on

I’m going ahead with the magazine Jess. Just for the
hell of it and to say we’ve done it and if it sells 50 we will only lose
about $600 and we may do it again.
There were a few typos so it isn’t quite ready for

Back in it's day POTA2001's $ 68 million opening
was a big deal. In the 9 years since, Hollywood has pretty much perfected the
macro opening and POTA2001 has fallen behind. But one thing it had was Tim

m + (maybe even + + ). As with "Avatar" things get a little curiouser and
curiouser when one factors in the higher 3D prices. Now everybody wants to do 3D

Reworking Burke again. I'm finally happy with it. I can't
wait to see him painted up.
These are the various iterations of Burke...from left to right, Ada
Chan's, a rework of hair on an Erick something or other from DiD (I think), my
first human sculpt (which was too small to fit a 1:6 scale body), and the
current Burke:

In any case, I cannot see this book being a contender for a new film... For
the new story to appeal to widespread audiences, you'd have to do PLANET
all over again and add the CONSPIRACY storyline in it... Joe Movie-goer isn't
going to want to see a film that they'd be coming in halfway to the story
which is kind of what would happen if CONSPIRACY would be a film... I mean
you'd have to do the set-up (Astronauts crash, wander the FZ, get caught up in
the hunt) for the CONSPIRACY story to make sense unless you're counting on
audiences having seen PLANET... It'd might be a good film to "us" since we
know the POTA film(s) and would get what's happening, but it'd be too much to
expect a newbie to know the backstory that'd set up the events of COTPOTA.

One of
the hidden gems at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival was Rupert Wyatt's
directorial debut
The Escapist, a prison escape
thriller starring Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes and Dominic Cooper as three of a
crew of prisoners who make a brazen effort to get out of a maximum security
prison. The film was striking for its stark look as well as it's distinctive
non-linear storytelling structure, and it showed a great deal of promise for a
first-time filmmaker who had actually spent nearly ten years cutting his teeth
on short films.
Over a year after first seeing the film, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down
with Wyatt to find out what went into making his long-awaited feature film
debut.
(Note from the interviewer: While it's been commented that I sometimes sound a
bit like Martin Scorsese, I don't quite have his filmmaking skills just yet, so
apologies for the shaky camerawork!)
The Escapist opens in New York
and L.A. on
Friday, April 3, but it can be seen on IFC First Take in other areas

Never seems to be
a good move for me when they think they have to include these "nods to the
original movie" Time will tell I suppose:
EXCLUSIVE: HUGE
PLANET OF THE APES PREQUEL STORY DETAILS!
We've been
following the story of Caesar, a prequel to Planet of the Apes, for
almost
two years now. We told you that Scott Frank was writing and directing the
film, and
then we brought you news that he was off the project. But Frank
leaving
Caesar didn't kill it dead - the project is alive and well, and in fact
tonight
Deadline reports that Fox has hired Rupert Wyatt, director of the little
seen
Sundance film The Escapist (no relation to Kavalier & Klay) to direct from
a script
by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
Now we have some
details about the story of Caesar, which is currently called Caesar: Rise of the Apes, and
about the tons of little nods to the original movie that Jaffa and Silver have put
into their script. And about how it
surprisingly ties
directly into the original 1968 Planet of the Apes.
Be warned: there
are spoilers that follow, although fans of the original five Apes movies will not be too
surprised by much of what happens in this film.
Like Scott Frank's
version, Caesar: Rise of the Apes is centered on genetic research. Will is a doctor
trying to cure Alzheimers, a disease that afflicts his father. He's working with
monkeys to create a benign virus that can get into brain tissue and restore
functionality. After his research is shut down he's left with just one chimp, the child
of his most promising subject, and Will raises him at home. Young Caesar is
incredibly intelligent for an ape, and over time he continues to mutate and
evolve, looking less like a chimp and moving on from sign language to actual speech.
Eventually Caesar ends up leading an army of apes in an uprising just as a
catastrophe strikes mankind.
Some points of
interest:
- Caesar: Rise of
the Apes is explicitly a prequel to the real Planet of the Apes. During the course of
the script TV newscasts recount the launch of a space craft called the Icarus, led by a
Colonel Taylor, which eventually disappears while going around the dark side of
Mars. While these aren't the exact same situations from the original film,
Planet of the Apes had Charlton Heston playing Colonel Taylor whose ship,
the Icarus, crash lands on Earth in the distant future.
- The script opens
with poachers capturing apes in the wild. The scene is structured to recall the apes
capturing humans at the beginning of Planet of the Apes.
- Caesar's mother
is named Bright Eyes, which is what Dr. Zira called Colonel Taylor in the original
film.
- As Caesar
changes his eyes become green; this reflects the green outfits worn
by the
chimps in Planet of the Apes.
- In Conquest of
the Planet of the Apes Caesar led primitive apes in an uprising
against
man, and the biggest battle took place on a bridge. The same happens in
Caesar:
Rise of the Apes, except this time the bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge
in San
Francisco.
- There are other
name homages. A female scientist is named Stewart, which was the name of the female Icarus
crewmember. Dodge and Landon, also Icarus crewmembers in the original film,
appear as names, but in very different roles than in Planet of the Apes. Dodge is
a bad guy, in fact. There's a chimp named
Cornelia, a play on Cornelius from
the original film, a chimp named Franklin, a play on Apes director Franklin
Schaffner, and an orangutan named Maurice, homaging Maurice Evans, who played
Dr. Zaius.
- Dodge actually
hoses Caesar down in a scene that recalls the 'It's a madhouse!' scene in Planet of the
Apes.
- At one point
Caesar is sent to a wild animal park and lives in a monkey house.
There we
see that the original film's social structure, where chimps, orangutans
and
gorillas have their own strata, is in place. Caesar manages to unite them
all,
though.
- By the end of
the script humanity's downfall, which is tied to Caesar's origin, is in place. Caesar
is presented as struggling for freedom, but he's unwilling to be violent. This makes
the ending confused, as the other apes
rampage while Caesar behaves
non-violently.
- In the original
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar makes the other apes
leap
forward evolutionarily just by existing. Here there's a more scientific
explanation. Also, Caesar's slow mutation explains why
the apes in Planet of the Apes are bigger than and look nothing like modern
chimps, orangutans or gorillas.
- The ending is
suitably bleak in a traditional Planet of the Apes way, while
leaving a
big opening for the next chapter.

Apes movies will not be too surprised by much of what happens in this film.
Like Scott Frank's version, Caesar: Rise of the Apes is centered on genetic
research. Will is a doctor trying to cure Alzheimers, a disease that afflicts his father. He's working with monkeys to create a benign virus that can get into
brain tissue and restore functionality. After his research is shut down he's
left with just one chimp, the child of his most promising subject, and Will raises him at home. Young Caesar is incredibly intelligent for an ape, and over
time he continues to mutate and evolve, looking less like a chimp and moving on
from sign language to actual speech. Eventually Caesar ends up leading an army of apes in an uprising just as a catastrophe strikes mankind.
Some points of interest:
- Caesar: Rise of the Apes is explicitly a prequel to the real Planet of the
Apes. During the course of the script TV newscasts recount the launch of a space craft called the Icarus, led by a Colonel Taylor, which eventually disappears
while going around the dark side of Mars. While these aren't the exact same
situations from the original film, Planet of the Apes had Charlton Heston playing Colonel Taylor whose ship, the Icarus, crash lands on Earth in the
distant future.
- The script opens with poachers capturing apes in the wild. The scene is
structured to recall the apes capturing humans at the beginning of Planet of the Apes.
- Caesar's mother is named Bright Eyes, which is what Dr. Zira called Colonel Taylor in the original film.
- As Caesar changes his eyes become green; this reflects the green outfits worn by the chimps in Planet of the Apes.
- In Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar led primitive apes in an uprising
against man, and the biggest battle took place on a bridge. The same happens in Caesar: Rise of the Apes, except this time the bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge
in San Francisco.
- There are other name homages. A female scientist is named Stewart, which was
the name of the female Icarus crewmember. Dodge and Landon, also Icarus crewmembers in the original film, appear as names, but in very different roles
than in Planet of the Apes. Dodge is a bad guy, in fact. There's a chimp named
Cornelia, a play on Cornelius from the original film, a chimp named Franklin, a play on Apes director Franklin Schaffner, and an orangutan named Maurice,
homaging Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius.
- Dodge actually hoses Caesar down in a scene that recalls the 'It's a madhouse!' scene in Planet of the Apes.
- At one point Caesar is sent to a wild animal park and lives in a monkey house.
There we see that the original film's social structure, where chimps, orangutans and gorillas have their own strata, is in place. Caesar manages to unite them
all, though.
- By the end of the script humanity's downfall, which is tied to Caesar's
origin, is in place. Caesar is presented as struggling for freedom, but he's unwilling to be violent. This makes the ending confused, as the other apes
rampage while Caesar behaves non-violently.
- In the original Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar makes the other apes
leap forward evolutionarily just by existing. Here there's a more scientific
explanation. Also, Caesar's slow mutation explains why the apes in Planet of the Apes are bigger than and look nothing like modern chimps, orangutans or
gorillas.
- The ending is suitably bleak in a traditional Planet of the Apes way, while leaving a big opening for the next chapter.
