Group: potadg Message: 57127 From: Dario Sciola Date: 3/18/2010
Subject: Hand-less soldier apes
.html
I just received my EMCE (MEGO reproduction) Soldier Ape yesterday, and
was a bit shocked. At first I thought it was some sort of a production
glitch when I saw that the hands on the Soldier Ape (not the others)
had a sown stitch across the sleeve end. But then I noticed that the
packaging picture that comes with all of the figures in the set also
show the stiched soldier hand, so this was definitely the way EMCE
intended the figure to be. Intrigued, I then started looking a bit
closer at images of vintage MEGOs and sure enough, the "Soldier Apes"
all had these awkward looking hands that they refered to as 'gloved'
hands.

I never noticed those crappy looking hands in all these years. I never
had MEGOs as a kid and while I've collected a bunch of POTA stuff over
the years, for some reason I was never inclined to get the vintage
MEGOs.

So is there any background story to these 'gloves'. I think they look
silly and not like gloves at all. I can understand EMCE being faithful
to the reproduction, but why did the MEGO's have them in the first
place? Was there some shortage of 'hands' when the MEGO production
ran, and this was a way of shipping the product?

Does anyone know? I may have to do some digging in at the megomuseum
site, but I can't be the first one to bring this up.

It must be Helen.  She's done a lot of work tracking down the baby chimp from Escape.  I wonder if she's ever completed her carpet bag.  That will be so fun to meet up with her, Michael.

I'm also curious as to what something like that would cost to ship.
Not cheap, for sure.

The Auction expects a $7.5K price. It it only begining with the lower
$3.5K price starting bid. Given that it is from Natalie and has that
provenance, it may go higher. I was also wondering if the head and
body were things that Natalie herself ordered. Perhaps Jeff knows.

It will be interesting but in the current economic climate I can see it not even selling.

This L.A. Times interview with Bryan Singer shows once again that Fox seems to be courting the fans. He's planning to do both "X-Men: First Class" and "X-Men 4". Also interesting, the article notes Fox is hot to make movies with their "Avatar" cash. Sounds like a good time for "Caesar" to be in production. It just might work.

I know that she is not selling it, but assumed that she owned it at one
point. I was wondering if she ordered the head and body while owning it.
But I'm now thinking that it was a bit of a leap in judgment on my part
to even assume she owned it. Even if she used it in the movie AND her
husband was the producer, I guess the studio took possession of the
costume after filming was over. Back in the day, stars often just went
home with a lot of studio property after filming was done. Today, they
probably lock up the stuff right away knowing that some of the stuff
will be worth its weight in gold if the movie is a success.

Sorry Dario and John.

I thought I made it clear in a following post where I said:

”Yeah me too!

The bloody thing is taking forever (and yes that WAS a trick question!!!).

Every time we are ready to print there’s another problem.

The latest was the 22 pages of comic – the files were too small.

And the pages I chose of Richard Pace’s work (first and BEST artist of the REVOLUTION comic – the version with a THADE character) were too small and you could really tell.  With this being the first full colour POTA magazine we didn’t want to compromise so we have been waiting on Richard (who has nothing left from the era) and Ty (who has been super busy) to provide bigger files.  These could not be found so we are going with two full colour pages that were not “worded”.

Should be printing/sending Monday!

Michael Forbidden Zine”

Didn’t anyone read that one?

Michael

*** No, there was no shortage of Soldier Ape hands (or any other "ape" hand
either)... The only story behind them is that was the way the figure was
designed, especially since MEGO was not about to shell out more money to have
"film accurate" gloves created, in short, the mitted gloves were a cheap way
to make a functional glove to fit the figures... Early on, the Ursus figure
was also shipped out with the mitted gloves and the various color
variations of the tunic, but that was switched to just a sewn off cuff (the same as
their Urko figure had)... Toward the end of the APES run, the Soldier Ape(s)
were finally sold with the same style of cuff as the Generals...

PS: If you look at the box for the Action Stallion, you'll see that
prototype Soldier sporting some gloves that are formed like gloves and a much nicer
designed outfit too... Bu to keep costs down and production efficient, MEGO
went with what they could do cheaper... ***

Thanks for explaining that. I still think they look silly, but what can
I do? They remind me of straight jackets (just not tied around the waist
of the lunatics) or those mits some parents put on their babies to stop
them from putting their thumbs in their mouths. If I had a spare set of

Zira is the Sideshow Zira that I modified the hair to, for more movie accuracy. She looks really great painted!! And Cornelius is ready for a Sideshow body. I have not had a chance to paint him yet, but he's ready for some serious makeup. You would need to drill out the bottom of the neck to accomodate the Sideshow neckplugs and paint them. They are $25 each. I can take Paypal if you send money to jessicarotich@...

Dylan's outfit is not together yet, but at least I've finished hairing up the pullover hood. Waiting for rubber mask grease to be delivered (can't find my original set, darn it!) and still have LOADS to do. *sigh* How did I ever get to this predicament...I am SOOOOOOO under the gun....
Waiting for the clear latex to dry up around the hairline so that I can add more rubber latex and eventually smooth out the sewn portion of the hair weft. I love how the hair lays nicely around the neck. I used three packages of fake wefts of hair to fluff up the hair. Too bad my boys are not hard core ape fans...they won't let me grease up their eyes and hands...I guess more rubber mask grease for me! Oh well. I should just be glad they are willing to go to Wondercon in ape costumes. :)

I was surprised to find my copy of The Forbidden Zine waiting for me when I got home from work (I was even more surprised to find a tip of the hat to me for just giving my opinion on the various comics that have been tested on this group). Thanks guys.

I have bought many Fanzines in my 37 years of being a geek. Some from/for bands such as KISS, Marilyn Manson, Testament, etc. I was even a member of John Denver's "Hearts in Harmony." I've bought even more fanzines devoted to the love of Monsters. We Belong Dead (Hammer Horror), G-fan (Godzilla), Bantha Tracks (Star Wars), etc. & my favorite Fanzine find, Apesfan devoted to the love of Planet of the Apes......at least it was my favorite till this morning.

Never has a "Fanzine" come off more professional or worth the price paid as The Forbidden Zine. So many fanzines appear to be xerox copies of pointless "facts" or list that mean nothing. The full color pages explode out of the book & the fact that this issue was very strong with art content (professional art content, not a bunch of doodles sent in by random fans) made me even more excited.

I have saved every comic page shared with me either on this group or sent to me directly to my external hardrive but seeing "Begins" printed in full color was fantastic!!! I've always said that Neil & Michael produce comics that "feel" like Planet of the Apes.

I have been a big fan of Graham's paintings since he started sharing them with the group & was facinated to get a quick run through of how he does it. (I think I'll be sticking with my simple watercolors)

I will never sew anything but old Heavy Metal patches on a jean jacket but it was great to get a glimpse of how Jessica makes those wonderful costumes. I hope to see an article from her on scuplting toys in a future issue!

This all plus the contributions from Ty, the people at BLAM! & Neil Moxham explaining what the Hell Wikipedia is makes this by far the best Fanzine of any kind this geek has ever purchased. Everyone involved should be very proud & I really hope that you guys are able to do this again very soon.

Yeah, the Jack Kirby nod fits in well with it being an early prologue to the story. Neil's normal style for drawing Planet of the Apes still can't be beat though. Austrailian Geneticist?? I thought all of you ran around like Steve Irwin, hunted your own food & had jobs like kangaroo rustler. :)

It's interesting to keep tabs on what Fox is doing with their franchises and wonder how that will effect the POTA reboot. Word is Fox has two terrific (terrific in Foxese) "X-Men" scripts and want a movie for 2011. I guess that would mean no "Caesar" until 2012. 2011 would make an even 10 years since Burton's effort but if "Caesar" came out then it would probably take a backseat to Fox's favorite franchise.
Jamie Moss, who wrote the "X-Men: First Class" script Fox flipped for, was/is also a "Caesar" writer.

Superb! The quality of the printing is fantastic, much better than I expected. What the whole package reminds me of is not so much a fanzine as the Marvel magazines - plenty of comic action (only this time in glorious colour) interspersed with some really nice illustrated articles. I really like this format, I think readers will get drawn in straight away but will want to come back to the articles for the advice Jess and Graham give.

Of course I've seen much of part one of the story already, and I'd love to be seeing it now for the first time, but I still want to know what happens next. The back-story is a nice touch, especially since it's so rooted in fact. 'Stan Smith' - American Dad reference? Whitty's probably a fan. I'm still knocked out by Neil's drawing of the 'real' gorilla in the main story. And the other artwork is really excellent aswell. The whole thing is a very 'visual' publication, which I approve of completely.

I'm trying to think of something negative to say so it sounds balanced, I'll have to get back to you when I spot a typo or something. I know how much work you guys put into this so I just genuinely hope we don't have to wait too long for issue 2.

    That was the plan.

It was originally going to be a Fanzine with a little bit of comic, then I thought hard and decided to give 22 pages of comic and the articles.

The articles were just too good not to print – and I have 2 shelved for the next issue.  I was going to just do 2 x 2 page articles in B&W to break up the comics and try to save on costs but it didn’t work!

We are going to have to do fewer pages next time and as people get it I’ll be asking how we can achieve this – less articles or less comic?

It’s perfect the way it is – you even get a really natural flow between the sections of comic and articles and art pages etc, but it just costs too much!

What the whole package reminds me of is not so much a fanzine as the Marvel magazines - plenty of comic action (only this time in glorious colour) interspersed with some really nice illustrated articles. I really like this format

Pretty cool couple of pages from you too pal – and from Drew about the novel.

Yes, I think it would be cool to get a regular column from Jess.

Graham’s article turned out nice too – and do you like the centerfold of REVOLUTION covers?

Part of the problem associated with being on the team of readers who helped me remodel the text!  J

Also a VERY big reason I wanted you to have 5 new pages to look at – I nearly left it out to get it printed more quickly but that 5 pages I dedicated to those who advised me.

Please do – any negatives will make the Zine stronger.

I can think of one – the PRICE!  I am waiting for a certain sector of the ape fan community to be unfairly critical and I have to say the price is going to be what any negative Nelly will fixate on.  I just want genuine feedback on if the price is WORTH it.  Frankly I’d pay $50 an issue, but I’m biased….

Issue #2….hmmm.  I wish I could say June (the cover probably will anyway like this one says JANUARY!!!:).  Neil is getting done with the next 5 pages of the Back Story – all layouts are done.  I already have 2 great articles.  I decided today where BEGINS is going…so maybe August….

Word is Fox has two terrific (terrific in Foxese) "X-Men" scripts and want a movie for 2011. I guess that would mean no "Caesar" until 2012. 2011 would make an even 10 years since Burton 's effort but if "Caesar" came out then it would probably take a backseat to Fox's favorite franchise.

I just think it would be cool if "Caesar" came out in 2011 and marked a definitive end to the Burton era. If the Mayans are right we won't live to see "Caesar" in 2012.

We take a look at some never before seen artwork by E M Gist being prepared for Blam! Ventures' CONSPIRACY of the Planet of the Apes book.

Artist Graham Hill provides an article explaining his unique technique for painting Planet of the Apes characters.

Jessica Rotich gives instruction on making a 1:1 Planet of the Apes Costume.

Neil Moxham tells us about the Planet of the Apes Wiki site.

      All this and more!

      Cheers,

      Neil

      That’s incredible for two reasons:

      (1)      they were sent same day and Moxy in Ireland (which is further!) got his before you;

      (2)      they usually take at LEAST 7 days!

Spare a thought for Dario – I forgot to send his after my posts went out of order last week and I think that’s him knocking on the …..Guh….gah…..GGGGGgag…..

No worries...Just want to see all that POTA comic goodness :)

Did you send the mag to the shop or home address...?

(I've got a packet to go and collect from the post office on Monday because it wouldn't fit through the letter box at home... I'm assuming, as this is addressed to my partner, it's just E-Bay stuff and not the mag.)

I've just post this over on the Forum of the Apes

Looks great in full colour  though and the price includes shipping so... !!!
Still waiting for my copy but the pages shown on the E-bay listing look very nice.
Michael and Neil are both members here  (I think) I'm sure they could put up a page or two here to wet anyones appetite even more if we asked nicely

      Best, Graham.
Are you still a member over there Michael?

Might be worth a sale or two as the membership does have a few people who aren't on the yahoo forums.

      As alway best wishes,Graham.

This is a sad day for Apes fandom. Valerio was a nice guy who was very gracious in providing me materials for my books, and very pleasant to talk to. I still consider Sins of the Father one of the best POTA spinoff tales ever written, and I wish we'd been able to see more from him. R.I.P., Mike.

      Wow this is terrible news
Mike was such a friendly guy
I interviewed him 2 years ago
and luckily we talked in depth about his interest in POTA and the creation and characters etc of Sins Of The Father

The entire interview plus rare sketches and plot scripts are all found in
      Ape Chronicles 44
      info at

I’m so glad I was able to interview him and get the details from him
It just shows that we never know how much life is left and you shouldn't take anything for granted
Sins Of The Father has always been my favorite POTA comic script !
