Pictures of the Ape Attacks figures added to the photo section, not the best quality but between John's focussed pictures and these you should get the idea what they look like :)
I've also got two figures which are more like Neil's, though not any of the one's pictured, but not sure what the blister pack was like as I removed them.
All bought from a cheap/ remainder store for about a £1 each.
Best,Graham.

Are talking about Mark from SimianArms? I
don't recall any Joe. Unless you mean Joe Russo. But, he's not a San
Diegan.

I've just uploaded
a bunch of photos of the figures we got down here in Australia to the
Ape Attacks folder
in the photos section.
Neil T. Foster
Pictures of the Ape Attacks figures added to the
photo section, not the best quality but between John's focussed pictures and
these you should get the idea what they look like :)
I've also got two figures which are more like Neil's,
though not any of the one's pictured, but not sure what the blister pack
was like as I removed them.
All bought from a cheap/ remainder store for about a £1
each.
Best,Graham.

.htmlThanks to all who posted the new pictures.
I know that it is fundamentally wrong for me to even like these damn
knockoffs as they are a bastardization and exploitation of POTA, not
to mention pure commercialism and profit oriented. But I can't get
over the fact that I would love to find some of these some day. The
fact that there were dollar store fodder makes it even worse!

Thanks to
all who posted the new pictures.

My U.K. connection sent me knockoffs from the
POTA2001 era called "Space of the Apes" that look like Burton's apes with the
illustrations from the old Mego packages.

Does anyone here know the name of the line of APES knockoffs that came out
around the time of the pota2001 movie?
I think they might have been
from the UK and they had various apes with headgear like crowns, one had an
Ursus type helmet with diamond studs, etc....
If anyone has any pictures
of them, please send them to me and/or post them to the DG,
thanks...</HTML>

Yes, I went to the Egyptian Theater screening
April 29. I guess Michael just missed it.
They showed a so-so print of POTA and screened
the blu-ray of "Escape" on the big screen (complete with CG Lawgiver
intro). The blu-ray looked great and at first I thought it was a print
because I couldn't believe the historic Egyptian would show a blu-ray. It looked
sharp though it didn't have the "depth" of a print. In between William
Creber did a Q & A, though there wasn't much that seemed rare info. I still
have to trawl through my memory bank and remember the details. I asked him for
an interview and he said he's not giving them because he's writing a book about
his career. I asked him if he had any involvement in Jacobs' ill-fated "Dune"
and he said he didn't work on it but he read every draft of the script.

Anything to report to the potaDG about this?

Yeah, that's them. But I don't do uploading. And
I don't see them anywhere on the web.

I agree! I hate to say it but I think both versions of the Apes Attacks toys are pretty great & I'd love to stumble across a full set.

"Twentieth Century Fox has been busy all week
scheduling up June of next year. Already announcing an X-Men prequel they are
now set to release the prequel for Planet of the Apes currently being titled
Rise of the Apes on June 24, 2011, with Rupert Wyatt confirmed to
direct.
Back in March, Wyatt was rumored for the
director’s chair on the project but nothing was really known. The title
above is tentative though and could be changed later on into production.
According to Variety the studio is partnering with Peter Jackson’s visual
effects company WETA Digital on the film, which relaunches the Planet of the
Apes franchise.
Chernin Entertainment is producing. Wyatt will
direct from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who also are producing
with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.
The Planet of the Apes reimagining has been an up
down ride for awhile. There are no plot details for the new reboot, but the
previous story rumored on this Caesar project featured genetic experiments on
apes that led to their evolutionary eclipse of humans. Caesar refers to the
genetically altered leader, so dubbed because the ape was capable of grand
strategic thinking on par with Julius Caesar."

at it in a positive light, maybe having a fixed date will focus their
energies to complete a great movie knowing exactly how long they have to achieve

Thanks, Neil. That sounds pretty promising.
This will make it almost an exact decade since Burton's flick. Time to move
on.
The only other thing thnat stands out (besides
WETA doing the FX!) is that the screenwriters who apparently came up with this
are getting some respect as producers (it looks like). People are skeptical but
so far it sounds like a good project.

I'm pretty confident that Caesar can conquer
humanity. But can he conquer the box office in 2011, or at least put in a good
enough showing that there are sequels? Obviously a lot of that has to do with
the quality of the film (Fox!) and word of mouth. But let's face it, in the fast
paced world of modern movie distribution hype and spectacle play their part.
Maybe the most asked question about movies is: "Why do they keep remaking movies
over and sequelize to death? Don't they have any original ideas anymore?" The
answer is: Yes, there's plenty of original ideas, but the opening weekend is
king and the safe bet is the presold. That used to mean movie stars but more
it's become the franchise concept.
POTA2001 had a great opening weekend so it's a
concept that works. The bad word of mouth kept it from reaching it's potential.
The new one, currently called "Rise of the Apes", has been staked out for June
24 2011. That's prime summer real estate and as we know the summer movie
schedules have become a bloodbath. The very weekend it opens will literally be a
box-office race because the Pixar sequel "Cars 2" and the next (reportedly last)
"Fast and Furious" movie open. OK...OK. Those films seem to have a different
audience than the sci-fi "Apes" so it seems like good
counterprogramming.
But in the summer season as a whole, there's going
to be stiff competition to stand out. Summer 2011 will see "Transformers 3", the
comic book movies "Green Lantern", "Capt. America" and "Thor" (luckily no
already established superheroes), "Pirates of the Caribbean 4", Fox's own
"X-Men" prequel, "Scream 4", "Kung-Fu Panda 2", and a Spielberg WW1 horse movie
"Warhorse". And the one that will probably wipe the floor with all of them:
the final "Harry Potter" (until the reboot).
It's anybody's guess how things will turn out.
It's still anybody's guess how 2010 will turn out ("Iron Man 2" is reportedly
not doing as good as expected, though it's still minting money). But for those
hoping for a new "Ape" franchise it's a big part of the equation.

I'm guessing the film will be called "Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes."
Each film will have the title followed by the chapter.

Are you kidding? That's why they're making
it, to tie it in with POTA. Why do you think they're calling the
leader Caesar? That's why it's called "Planet of the Ape$". They'll probably
call it "Planet of the Apes: Caesar" or "POTA Begins" or "Rise of the POTA" (and
slip Al a few bucks for the domain name).

.html
Jackie Earle Haley is still on a roll. The former Kraik
("The Legacy" POTA TV episode) starred in the # 1 movie at the box office about
a week ago ("Nightmare on Elm St.") and now his TV show "Human Target" has been
renewed for next season. I think it would be great if Jackie could find
time to star in the new "Ape" movie (how cool would it be if the actor who
played Kraik unwittingly unleashes Apeageddon?). That's not just fan talk, he's
at a place in his career where that could happen. I think that would be a smart
"nod" to fans instead of the stupid "Take your stinkin' paws off me" lines.
Though with his series and his Freddy Krueger contract (he's signed for 3
movies) scheduling would be tough. Ah, who am I kidding? They're going to cast
Ben Affleck. <.html <.html

Greetings, fellow apes. A fellow ape would like to have a generous gathering of apes this coming Halloween in Ashton-under-Lyne on October 30th, and would like to mention this idea to council if he can find enough
backers. He meets with the council on May 20th, and will need a positive show of hands on who can participate in ape regalia. Any takers? Let's make this happen, guys, especially if you are on that side of
the pond.
Thanks and wish I could be there, too.

Creature designer Aaron Sims says of "Rise of the
Apes": "...we spent quite a lot of time designing the apes, the evolution of the
apes and these big scenes. So that was a lot of fun because I'm a gigantic POTA
fan, ever since I was a child. It was just one of my favorite films when I was
growing up. To be able to work on this one was just a dream come true...We
pretty much designed all the characters and all the apes and they are building
the sets in Vancouver right now".
That sounds great, but where are they going to
house all the CG apes? Remember, these aren't actors in makeup, these are real
CG apes. The movie takes place when apes are still wild and primitive, so these
CG apes need to be fed, housed, their messes cleaned up. I think that will be a
big challenge for the production. They say never work with kids or animals, and
the story calls for a lot of them (if it's like "Conquest"). I'm sure there will
be amusing stories when it's all over of how they trained and got the CG apes to
perform on cue. <.html <.html

It's an interesting question when we will know
what the apes look like. Fox has been pretty silent about this movie (whatever
we've learned has been from internet digging). With the apes created by computer
there won't be set pictures leaking of the apes. Unless some CG insider leaks it
we could have a long wait.

Avatar being the latest. Avatar looked nothing like the original site when first launched.
It's just a matter of time. So for now this will be the look.

And in the end there was so much being released on Avatar by Fox that it was pretty challenging just keeping up with it all.
I expect no different from "Rise of the Apes."
When it comes to advertising, no one advertises a film better than Fox. They spare no expence.

| Subject: Time Loop theory |
.htmlI assume that by "Time Loop" you mean the theory that the timeline is
circular.
As a 'circularist' I believe that the INTENT was portray a circular
timeline in the original 5 films. I subscribe to that notion for
several reasons. One reason (and the most important) was that was how
I originally interpreted the story. Another reason is that Dehn has
stated that that was his INTENT all along. Because of the many
continuity errors in the series, the truth is that neither side can
claim their interpretation is the one and only correct one.
Now when it comes to this new movie, I really don't care what it will
posit as the 'way things happened' as it will be a creation made by
new people and will have no connection to anyone who worked on the
original series. Why would I all of a sudden bow down to their
interpretation? If anything, I think just about everyone here on these
forums have more valued opinions than anyone in hollywood now working
on the movie. Would anyone who believed in the 'alternate' or 'new'
timeline theory suddenly changed their minds if the new movie tried to
explain all the discrepancies and portray the timeline as a circular
one? I doubt it.
I will be impressed (and grateful) if they at least tried to take all
that has happened before into consideration for the new movie. But I'm
not holding my breath.
And perhaps it would be best if they did stake out a completely new
movie. I think the time has long past to realistically have another
sequel or prequel to the original classic series. Too much has
changed. Is it realistic to expect that a novie that fell right in
line with 'classic' POTA could be a hit with todays audience, most of
which would be totally clueless to the events and characters from the
old movies? Unlikely.
I don't mind having a fresh take on POTA, as long as it is a GOOD
movie and not a mindless plot like 2001. Another fiasco will undermine
what little remains of the POTA legacy. That's why news of this new
movie has been a mixed bag of feelings for me. It's going to be a long
and torturous wait to see where this movie goes.
Dario

It seems to me
that no matter what they do with this new movie nothing is going to change
attitude wise as far as I can tell from reading comments on this forum and
elsewhere. Nothing is ever going to be good enough if it isn't going to be a
slave to the originals. The fans who want things to stay as they were in
the the old movies are going to hate it no matter how good it may turn out
to be, we've seen this before many times with new and different takes on
anything POTA.
I really don't
care what they do myself. You can't live in the past forever. If it's a good
movie I will be happy and I don't care if they do call it 'Planet of the
Apes' or whatever. I personally think that it will be stupid if they try to
tie it in with and make it a part of the storyline told in the old movies, they
tried that with the new Superman a few years ago and that didn't work for
me. As usual many fans just want the old stuff rehashed which isn't going to
happen, why would they bother, it's a very different world we live in now and
the 'original POTA' belongs to a different time that isn't ever coming
back.
Neil T. Foster
I assume that by "Time Loop" you mean the theory that the timeline is
circular.
As a 'circularist' I believe that the INTENT was portray
a circular timeline in the original 5 films. I subscribe to that notion
for several reasons. One reason (and the most important) was that was how
I originally interpreted the story. Another reason is that Dehn has
stated that that was his INTENT all along. Because of the many
continuity errors in the series, the truth is that neither side can
claim their interpretation is the one and only correct one.
Now
when it comes to this new movie, I really don't care what it will posit as
the 'way things happened' as it will be a creation made by new people and
will have no connection to anyone who worked on the original series. Why
would I all of a sudden bow down to their interpretation? If anything, I
think just about everyone here on these forums have more valued opinions
than anyone in hollywood now working on the movie. Would anyone who
believed in the 'alternate' or 'new' timeline theory suddenly changed
their minds if the new movie tried to explain all the discrepancies and
portray the timeline as a circular one? I doubt it.
I will be
impressed (and grateful) if they at least tried to take all that has
happened before into consideration for the new movie. But I'm not holding
my breath.
And perhaps it would be best if they did stake out a
completely new movie. I think the time has long past to realistically have
another sequel or prequel to the original classic series. Too much has
changed. Is it realistic to expect that a novie that fell right in
line with 'classic' POTA could be a hit with todays audience, most of
which would be totally clueless to the events and characters from the
old movies? Unlikely.
I don't mind having a fresh take on POTA, as
long as it is a GOOD movie and not a mindless plot like 2001. Another
fiasco will undermine what little remains of the POTA legacy. That's why
news of this new movie has been a mixed bag of feelings for me. It's going
to be a long and torturous wait to see where this movie
goes.

term "prequel" to PLANET, and I'd rather see any new take on the APES name
be it's own entity... Prequels generally suck, an example of just how bad
"prequels" can be, especially if a considerable amount of time has passed are
the SW films...
I'm not one that says "We need the original characters"... What we need is
a decent film... I don't have as bad of a feeling about this new film as I
did with pota2001, but no matter what, I will look at it as it's own thing...
It's just stupid to even say this is a prequel to a 42 year old film... ***

boasts music by Jerry (POTA) Goldsmith (the set features various isolated music
tracks) and the first episode had Natalie Trundy (who hitched a ride to
work from co-star Leslie Nielsen each day). There might even be more Ape stars
in it. I dunno.

Good looking, rich, knocking roles out of the park when he's not attending

Just dropping out of lurk mode to post this
little item i found on the den of geek website:
James Franco signs up for new Planet Of The Apes
movie
Simon Brew
Planet Of The Apes prequel Rise Of The Apes has its first actor
on board, as James Franco takes the lead role…
Published on May 21, 2010
It was a few weeks back now that Fox confirmed it was pushing ahead with its
plan to reboot the Planet Of The Apes franchise once more. The new
film, which will be called Rise Of The Apes, is a prequel story that's
being directed by Rupert Wyatt (who previously made The Escapist).
And it's now been revealed that James Franco is the first to sign up to star
in the film. Franco, whom we still love from Freaks & Geeks but has
picked up the most fame from the Spider-Man trilogy, will be taking the
lead role, that of the scientist who proves crucial to the film's story.
Further casting announcements are expected shortly, given that Fox plans to
have this one shooting this summer. And the release date has already been set
for June 24th 2011, too...

Probably done it himself he's been around the comic scene for a few years helping out Eddie Campbell (From Hell) and producing his own strips.
We have a mutual mate, one of my old customers who emigrated to OZ a few years ago, they both produced a anthology comic with lots of other guys from Brisbane called "Dee Vee"
It's a small world.

Well I'm glad
they aren't going with Jack Earle Haley, why would anyone want that? So what
if he was in one episode of the TV show as an annoying kid. If they are going
for a completely new up to date take on the thing why bother including
anything from POTA's distant past?
Neil T.
Foster
What the? According to hitfix, Toby Maguire
(aka Spiderman) was also in the running for "Rise of the Apes". What's up
with that? Liam Neeson was in a Batman movie and Jackie Earle Haley was in
"Watchmen". Doesn't that count?

Sorry I meant
Linda HARRISON, silly me!
Neil T. Foster
But he's no
leading man and Kraik was a really annoying kid in the TV episode. Maybe
they could also get Linda Hamilton to play his mother or something. And how
about Chuck Heston as, oh wait... too late...
Neil T.
Foster
Because it would be fun casting and he's a
good actor. He was Kraik, damn it!
