*** The reality is, it won't be... People can call it a prequel all they
want, but too much time has passed since the last original APES film for this
to really be anything but an attempt at revamping the franchise... It may be
tagged as part of the classics "history", but it won't be...

The funny thing with this film is they seem to be trying pretty hard to
play at it being connected to the originals whereas with pota2001, they seemed
to be doing everything they could to distance themselves from the
originals... Trying to say the new film ties with the classic is like trying to say
that "Batman Returns" is part of the same Batman franchise as the TV series
was...

I'm still of the opinion that I'd rather not see any new film made, BUT, if
they have to I'd rather it be a new take instead of trying to group it all
together... ***

James Franco is no leading man either. He's been a supporting player in anything he's done that's been successful. Kraik, er, um, Jackie STARRED in the # 1 movie at the box office a couple weeks ago, "Nightmare on Elm Street". Kraik rocks.

And Chuck and Linda Hamilton, I mean Harrison were in the last one. That didn't make you like it any less.

But he's no leading man and Kraik was a really annoying kid in the TV episode. Maybe they could also get Linda Hamilton to play his mother or something. And how about Chuck Heston as, oh wait... too late...

Well I'm glad they aren't going with Jack Earle Haley, why would anyone want that? So what if he was in one episode of the TV show as an annoying kid. If they are going for a completely new up to date take on the thing why bother including anything from POTA's distant past?

What the? According to hitfix, Toby Maguire (aka Spiderman) was also in the running for "Rise of the Apes". What's up with that? Liam Neeson was in a Batman movie and Jackie Earle Haley was in "Watchmen". Doesn't that count?

Well maybe they want him to be a supporting player in this one and have Caesar be the leading man / chimp.

I am aware that they were in the 2001 version and it didn't make me like it anymore either.

And I corrected my name mistake straight away so there's no need for the rather poor attempt at sarcasm thank you very much.

The thing is, none of us really know yet exactly how it's going to reference the original movies, besides what's been written on a few websites. I have a feeling that reviewers calling it a prequel are just leaping to conclusions and that it actually won't tie-in at all. It'll probably make no reference to Taylor or any other original characters, but if it does tell the story of an ape revolution then it effectively IS dismissing the events of the original movies. The only thing which would suggest otherwise is the use of the name 'Caesar', which is entirely created by the writers of those movies.

No-one would like to see a John Chambers-style POTA sequel more than me, but that's not going to happen with this movie. That belongs to the realm of fan-made films. It's probably better that they completely re-launch the concept rather than tie it in in a half-assed way.

This probably won't mean anything to long-time visitors to my Apes
site, but thanks to Google Docs, I've just added "View PDF" links to
most items on my site that are available in PDF format. This allows
visitors to view the PDFs without having to download the PDF files
and/or without having to have a PDF viewer installed.

Great find, Tim! That's the best one I have seen EVER! Loved how he added the grass--it just ups it up a notch.
Graham--what a small world indeed.
Dario--you should let the monkey out of the box. He'll be happier.

Hi William, just curious as to where you found the Zaius drawing?
It's just that it was drawn by me and is part of the comic Going Home (see attached panel)
As far as I can recall the comic was only ever available on the PotaDG group and this certainly looks like it was originally taken from there as you can see part of the watermark I put on the pages. I'm not upset about it or anything just curious as to where it came from and what it has been used for!

Mea culpa! Some time ago I added miniature examples of comic-book representations of some of the main POTA characters to the bottom of their pages, for completeness. If you hover over each picture it shows the source material and credits the artist. I've been taking a long break from the wiki site while I work on other stuff, but when I come back to it, I can change the page layouts so the credits are a permanent caption under each picture, if that would be more satisfactory.

Hey Neil it's not a problem at all. When I saw it pop up in a post on the other group (sent by William Burge who is always uploading Apes pictures) I was curious as to who had been using my Apes art and what for.
When I asked about it he pointed me in the right direction and as soon as I saw where and what it was used for I realised there was nothing amiss. I'm a little bit at fault myself for not checking the wiki POTA pages more often (and I'd recommend that everyone does check them out) and I did notice that you had credited all the artists etc. when you hover your mouse over the pictures, so like I said it's not a problem for me the way it is.

One of my sons was watching an old episode of The Big Bang theory this morning before leaving for school and in the episode one of the guys was sick and so to avoid him for at least 10 hours of the day the others went to a Planet of the Apes marathon. Later it showed them at the cinema watching the movies and everyone had ape masks on and they referenced the 'take your stinking paws off me' line.
It's probably old news to most here but I haven't watched the show much before and just thought it was cool that they mentioned POTA!

The Big Bang Theory is one of the funniest shows around for us geeks.
Lots of science fiction, comics, computer and general science puns,
funny characters, and funny stories. It's in it's third year but has
already set a record deal for syndication. So it's going to be around
for a while. Wouldn't be surprised to see more Apes in the future.

It was announced today that "Alice in Wonderland", directed by our own Tim Burton, has become the 6th film ever to pass $ 1 billion in worldwide box office. The others are : 1. "Avatar" (the only one to pass $ 2 billion); 2. "Titanic"; 3. "LOTR: Return of the King"; 4. "Pirates 2: Dead Man's Chest"; 5. "The Dark Knight". Of those 6, 4 were directed by dudes who spent time developing the POTA reboot.
I'm sure all Ape fans would like to congratulate Mr. Burton on this achievement. (the sound of crickets is heard) Anybody?

So. most of the POTA fans obviously hate POTA '01.  I look at it as an action film with apes.  Why are most of you sooo against letting it be?  There have been numerous other movies that have been remade and they just go on sitting quietly on the shelf.  But not POTA.  Why?  Sometimes the books are followed, sometimes not.  But POTA being "reimagined" ( with the ending being the only thing remotely resembling the book) is BLASPHEMY!  I don't understand.  Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, King Kong, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead---just to name a few---don't get the sheer hatred that Burton's Planet gets.

I think the reason why Tim Burton is so hated is because he re-imagined a movie classic so much that to ape fans that it was unrecognizable to them

*** I get your point, but this and the pota group are for the purpose of
discussing APES (in it's various incarnations), so it's abt to be continually
brought up, after all it carries the name... You can go to any other fan
sites and you'll see some of their entities being trashed too... I'm sure if
you went to a ST site, you may see TNG or DS9 being called "blasphemous" or on
a SW site, the prequels and the changes Lucas made to the original trilogy
aren't placed on a pedestal either... The public at large probably doesn't
care either way, so if you ask them about it, I'm sure they wouldn't call it
"blasphemous"... To them it's probably a film like any other...

And regarding King Kong, the reason the 2005 version doesn't get bashed is
because it's a good movie... KK '76 sucks though... But if you look at that
KK site, you'd see the various Kong films are trashed too... It's in every
    fandom... ***

I don't hate it I just don't like it very much. The reasons? Probably too many to list but a few are - Mark Whatshisname as the lead for one, not good enough to carry the movie and the character he played, an annoying wimp who caused all the problems in the first place by disobeying orders. The horrible female make-ups. The stupid apes jumping through the air like they were from some bad old kung fu movie. The Heston and Harrison cameos. Those annoying 'nods' to the original. The non stop snarling by Thade. The crap story and the stupid ending. There's more but I have to stop, it's making me depressed!

No I haven't, I don't post over there anymore couldn't really be bothered and It would probably be interpreted as me trying to cause trouble anyway. Plus James will no doubt come up with the usual 'it was on the web so is fair game and I can't claim ownership of something POTA as it belongs to Fox etc.'
I'm just fed up with the blatant stealing of stuff.
It was used occasionally as one of the many home page pictures a few years ago:

While I'm not on the other group, I think it's worth mentioning that Paul Dehn's first outline for 'The Battle for the Planet of the Apes' (see Hunter's site) describes Caesar's revolutionary flag: "against a yellow ground, the head of an ape (Caesar) rises from symbolically blood-red flames."

Here's my attempt at that, but I think it could be done better:

I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this time someone got it right.  In the remake of Fright Night, Peter Vincent (played by Roddy McDowall in the original) will be played by David Tennant.  He is my first choice for ANY part played previously by Roddy.

Whilst I agree he's a great choice, I have to ask - why yet another remake? Is there really no one who can write a decent NEW movie these days?!? Are there no new ideas left? Or is it just gross laziness as with most things nowadays where it seems it is easier to 'borrow' other peoples ideas and stuff rather than do the work yourself?

Why remakes? Because it front loads the opening weekend. It provides a recognition factor that gets people in the door for the almighty first week. Sequels, remakes, familiar characters from comic books, video games, cartoons... There's plenty of original movies, but those are for Oscar season.

Fox's movie version of the TV show "The A-Team" is another 10 year odyssey that comes to an end this weekend. The devilish Nikki Finke wrote up an amusing article (amusing if "Apes" wasn't back in Fox's crosshairs) about it's development hell. FYI for those who are interested.

Why remakes? Because it front loads the opening weekend. It provides a recognition factor that gets people in the door for the almighty first week. Sequels, remakes, familiar characters from comic books, video games, cartoons... There's plenty of original movies, but those are for Oscar season.

I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this time someone got it right.  In the remake of Fright Night, Peter Vincent (played by Roddy McDowall in the original) will be played by David Tennant.  He is my first choice for ANY part played previously by Roddy.

On the heels of last week's poor showing for "Marmaduke", Fox's "The A-Team" is having to settle for the B-list, with an expected $27 million for the weekend. The other '80's reboot of the week, "The Karate Kid", is expecting $ 52 + million. Fox's Tom Cruise movie "Knight and Day" (co-written by former "Caesar" director Scott Frank) is showing a lack of interest in prerelease polls and is expected not to do so well (and the title won't help). That might leave Fox's sci-fi "Predators" to save the summer for them next month. How all this effects "Rise of the Apes", shooting this summer, remains to be seen. More pressure? Maybe inspiring them to do something different, riskier? Sci-fi was Fox's bread and butter this year with "Avatar".
So far the summer has been considered a disappointment at the box office, with audiences seeming to give it a big yawn. The movie that is expected to be a smash (and has been getting great reviews) is Pixar's "Toy Story 3".  As it turns out, Pixar's movie for next year, "Cars 2", goes head to head with "Rise of the Apes". I'm just saying.

Well, all I know is that I'm planning on launching this countdown this weekend with first news reports. But in the end if Fox feels the time isn't right and wants to delay the movie, then I'm pulling the plug on the site. I'm certainly not going to wait around for Fox to make up their minds.

        Very interesting points brought up.
Last night I was dragged by the kids to watch Karate Kid (the remake). They should have named it Kung Fu Kid, those lousy human bastards. Anyway, I thought I would snooze through the whole film and get an expensive nap out of it. Didn't happen. At first I was rooting for Wil Smith's kid to get beaten up to a pulp. Is that mean of me?

I like the first photo I used in the first update from "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes." I plan to use a lot of those from the comic book series as photo updates, as there will be very little on the film in the coming months. The photos from that comic book series blend in good with the whole look of the site.

After years of wondering if the glyphs actually meant anything or stood for a rank or whatever I have come to the conclusion that they don't and are purely for decoration.
Whilst looking through pictures I noticed (for the first time ever after who knows how many years!) that on Zaius' coat the glyphs are mirrored. (see picture)
If they had an actual meaning surely they would be exactly the same design on both sides wouldn't they? Once one set is mirrored it can't mean or stand for the same thing as the set of glyphs on the other side.

        Nice site Alex.

I agree that many of the MR Comics images will likely fit right in with
        the concept of the movie.

One question. What is the source of the image you currently have for the
Synopsis tab. The cartoonish image of the chained Conquest Red Gorilla
being beaten by cops? It reminds me of some of the coloring book covers,
but I don't think I've seen this one before.

It's actually Dave Ballard's 'restored' version isn't it?
