Thanks, Dario.
The image is from the movie comic book series by "Marvel Comics" from the 70's.

Nice site Alex.
I agree that many of the MR Comics images will likely fit right in with the concept of the movie.
One question. What is the source of the image you currently have for the
Synopsis tab. The cartoonish image of the chained Conquest Red Gorilla being beaten by cops? It reminds me of some of the coloring book covers, but I don't think I've seen this one before.

*** I'm still convinced they are... There are too many apes of power or
position with them for it not to make sense that they are symbols of their
status... Even if they are just decoration, it proves the apes with them are
rich enough to afford getting them, and being rich equates "power" or
"position" to some people so it'd probably be the same for them... ***

I am going to create my own foam latex appliance of Zira. Unfortunately, with no positive of my face, I have to make do with the female plastic face from Apemania. I am almost done with
the sculpt. I started her today and by tomorrow she should be done:
Do you have any suggestions on improvement? I'm still working the lower muzzle...and I took into account Lord T's complaints about Apemania's Zira's nose being too big, so this sculpt has a
slightly smaller nose.

Fair enough, but
then they would be the first society ever in history to have done that but
then again they are apes and anything they do can't be compared to human
societies of the past I suppose.

copies of that issue, but when I saw it in it's 'restored' format I
just didn't make the connection. It's amazing how much better all the
prints look when you remove the logo, price, and other words.

Since you're home now, I have to ask you if you received the issue of "AC"
that features the 3 page story by Neil and yourself? I know you mentioned
you were going to buy one for me so i could check it out, but I haven't
received mine and it's been a long time coming...
I dealt with two Canadians and the transactions were completed within 7-10
days, so it sure isn't the Canadian Mail system... Any word on what the deal
is?

I wasn't 'speaking
of Dave' I just pointed out that you had used one of his 'restored' covers as
the picture on your site. I'm sure he doesn't mind but maybe you should check
with Ty whether it is okay to use images from the Mr. Comics mini-series? Just
thinking, some people take copyright seriously.

Nice site Alex.
I agree that many of the MR Comics images will
likely fit right in with the concept of the movie.
One question.
What is the source of the image you currently have for the Synopsis
tab. The cartoonish image of the chained Conquest Red Gorilla being
beaten by cops? It reminds me of some of the coloring book covers, but
I don't think I've seen this one before.

As mentioned, it's been a bad summer and year at
the box office. Partly that's the economy but there's no denying an indifference
to the movies that have been coming out. This week the heads of studios are
having confabs with talent agencies to see what they've got that might interest
audiences. It's often asked why they keep doing reboots, sequels, formula
comedies, etc. ("Doesn't Hollywood have any original ideas anymore?"). But
there's no denying people go to those. The best movies often don't get the
biggest audiences. It's a complex thing figuring out what audiences want. But
there MIGHT be a sea change coming in what movies get made.
I think it can be argued some of the best movies
ever made have been remakes, sequels, even "formulas", just as there's no
guarantee of quality just because it's an "original idea". It's more the movie
itself and the creativity and passion involved. Maybe one of the producers
of last year's surprise hit "The Hangover" said it best: "People are feeling
marketed to, as opposed to catered to".
This might seem not relevant as a POTA post, but
since they are scheduled to start shooting a new POTA movie in a couple weeks,
maybe it is. Perhaps this Hollywood soul searching will benefit "Rise of the
Apes". Or maybe it will be just another Hollywood soul searching that
doesn't add up to much.

I am going to create my own foam latex appliance of Zira.
Unfortunately, with no positive of my face, I have to make do with the female
plastic face from Apemania. I am almost done with the sculpt. I started
her today and by tomorrow she should be done:
Do you have any suggestions on improvement? I'm still working the
lower muzzle...and I took into account Lord T's complaints about Apemania's
Zira's nose being too big, so this sculpt has a slightly smaller nose.

I tryied replying to your ealier e-mail on this very same question but for some odd reason the e-mail didn't go through.
But whatever, yes. A news update has been posted. Updates won't be everyday as there's still a year to go before the release of the film but nevertheless they will be there. Just please don't ask me
everyday when's the next update because quite honestly I never know myself. I post them when they become available. Just like anyone else. :o)
June 19th update:
Enjoy.

To no one's surprise, "Toy Story 3" opened at the
top of the box office with $ 109 million estimated (as well as being a summer
movie with good reviews, hard to do this year). The "Toy Story' characters are
some of the most popular around, beloved by million$. Now comes word that Woody
and the gang (ha! I said "Woody") will be in a "Toy Story" short film that will
play with Pixar's "Cars 2" next June. Yes, in fact the very "Cars 2" that will
open opposite "Rise of the Apes". So not only will Caesar have to battle, uh,
uh, I don't know any of the "Cars" character names, but he will also have to
conquer Woody (*snicker*) and his pals.
I say bring them on! Caesar will melt their
plastic a**es! Fight like apes!!

I have just uploaded 3 pictures, sent to me by Chris Hight, of the interior of the spaceship being made by Matt Sotis and funded by Chris.
They can be found in the Misc folder in the files section. Looks fantastic so far!

"The Hollywood Reporter" says that John Lithgow
and Freida Pinto have signed on as humans for "Rise of the Apes". No word on Don
Cheadle, who was also a rumored potential (probably not for the Lithgow role).
Probably most people know who Lithgow is. He'll play the dad of James Franco's
character. The dad has Alzheimer's and that spurs Franco on to use chimps to
find a cure, leading to a classic "Oops!".
Freida Pinto is the female lead, a primatologist
(no word if she's also the love interest). Pinto is a model who's acting career
is heating up. But her only released film so far is the smash Oscar Best Picture
winner "Slumdog Millionaire":
If Cheadle signs too that will be quite a

"Rise of the Apes" is scheduled to come out 1
year from today. Some might question whether the film will be ready by then,
specifically with the brave new POTA world of CG. Peter Jackson said it took
them a year and a half of development before they got one shot of King Kong they
liked (they also revamped him after seeing the movie trailer). But WETA does
have the "King Kong" experience to bring to "Apes", as well as 5 year's of
experience since then.
I think unless there's any unforeseen emergencies
that the movie will keep that date (unless they blink because of "Cars 2"). And
I'm sure WETA knows what time it needs and wouldn't have agreed to this time
table if they didn't think they could make it. They are the superstars of this
area and I'm sure watch their own backs. Peter Jackson personally wanted to make
a POTA film back in the '90's (the original is one of his favorites) and he was
Roddy's personal choice as director. I think Jackson will take a personal
interest in this project as far as the creation of the apes. This is quite a
credit. They know the knives will be out because people are so protective of
POTA as a makeup legend. Everybody is skeptical of CG apes, so WETA has some
proving to do.
But I don't think "Rise" will be the battle
royale people are expecting. It won't show the "conquest" I don't think. That
would probably be suicide to the CG artists. It's called "Rise of the Apes".
Probably 2/3rds (or more) of the flick will be Caesar's story with the humans.
Then the last act would be him getting his ape buddies together and saying,
"These humans suck. Let's take over". It could still be a good story, the
bittersweet tale of a guy who wanted to cure Alzheimer's but wound up opening
Pandora's Box (with apologies to "Avatar", don't sue me). The next movie (with
more time and money, if this is a hit) could be the "Conquest of the Apes".
Especially considering this is a new director with not a lot (any?) of FX
experience on this scale, I think they will go easy. But that's fine with me.
Most of the "Ape" films are not epic action movies, they are more intimate
sci-fi tales. If they can get the stories and the characters right, that's
enough for me. I don't need a whole lot of apes.

I’m not expecting a whole bunch of

Sounds to me like a big story about humans
that will touch on how apes acquire intelligence and speech.
I think it a nice subtle restart that’d
more an epilogue….just what we need I think.

So, joejaffa says he hasn't read the current
script but he's read one from a couple months ago (for instance, he says the
female primatologist in the script played by Freida Pinto is named Stewart, but
recent reports in "Variety" and EW call the character Caroline). But his
comments give some good clues of what we can expect. But he says, "The draft I
read presented it as a smart science-fiction film. However, from what I've heard
Fox has "dumbed it down" quite a bit, so honestly I have no idea how it'll end
up. There's fighting to get it going both ways, so I have no idea how it'll end
up".
Here's his comments of the script he read (the
movie might be different, remember):
"It's not that dark, but it has dark moments. It's
very chilling. There isn't much action up until the 3rd act, then the action
gets intense".
he calls it "a new origin story to the original
timeline"; "a loose prequel"; "I'd say it's down the middle between a prequel to
the 1968 film and a reboot".
He says the primatologist (Pinto) and the
geneticist (James Franco) do become lovers (that'll keep the eyes off the CG
apes!)
The Lithgow father character is named
Charles
Spoiler: Caesar lives with Franco and a mean
neighbor mistreats Caesar, which leads to his anger at humans (the character
they wanted Don Cheadle for was a scientist, not this neighbor; how about Mickey
Rourke for the neighbor?)
"It's not a remake of "Conquest" at all. The only
thing that's the same as "Conquest" is that the name of the 1st chimp to talk is
Caesar, and that's it".
"There's one other intelligent ape in the script
who comes in later on, but he isn't as smart as Caesar and doesn't play as
prominent of a role".
"Caesar aquires the ability to speak. He doesn't
say much though. Don't want to give that much away here, as it would ruin a
great moment in the script". He says Caesar grows from a baby and gets smart
gradually. He's the only ape who wears clothes (somewhat). The apes revolt using
their "brute strength", not weapons.
He says it has nothing to do with POTA2001 and
that "if it's anything like the draft I read, it should be great".
So it sounds like it really will be primitive apes
(Primitive? They're prehistoric!) showing us who's boss. I'm open, as long as
the "don't dumb it down" side wins.

Spoiler: Caesar lives with Franco and a mean neighbor mistreats Caesar, which leads to his anger at humans (the character they wanted Don Cheadle for was a scientist, not this neighbor; how
about Mickey Rourke for the neighbor?)
"It's not a remake of "Conquest" at all. The only thing that's the same as "Conquest" is that the name of the 1st chimp to talk is Caesar, and that's
it".
"There's one other intelligent ape in the script who comes in later on, but he isn't as smart as Caesar and doesn't play as prominent of a role".
"Caesar aquires the ability to speak. He doesn't say much though. Don't want to give that much away here, as it would ruin a great moment in the script". He says Caesar grows
from a baby and gets smart gradually. He's the only ape who wears clothes (somewhat). The apes revolt using their "brute strength", not weapons.
He says it has nothing to do with POTA2001 and that "if it's anything like the draft I read, it should be great".
So it sounds like it really will be primitive apes (Primitive? They're prehistoric! ) showing us who's boss. I'm open, as long as the "don't dumb it down" side wins.

Ed Gross, co-author of "POTA Revisited", has a
cool POTA that's worth visiting often. He managed to snag a few words from newly
cast actress Freida Pinto, who says she saw the original "Apes" "ages ago" but
reports the "Rise" script "really had a soul in the kind of story that they
really wanted to put out there. I just thought there was a lot of soul to it".
Pinto's first movie was the Best Picture winner
"Slumdog Millionaire" and she has a Woody Allen movie coming out this year ("You
Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger"), and plays the title character in an
independent movie for the Weinsteins. So she seems pretty selective. Good to
have her aboard.

Yeah, the main discouraging thing is Jaffa saying
Fox is trying to "dumb it down" (we knew that would happen). But it's
encouraging that he said people were fighting that. That will be tricky since
nobody, the director, the cast, have a big enough name to stand up to them. The
saving grace would be if Peter Chernin wants this to be "more" than it could be.
He was the # 2 at the whole News Corp. (which owns Fox) and "Rise" will be
his first movie as a producer under his "golden parachute" deal. Will he just do
the usual Fox movie or will he fight for something special now that his name's
on it? If he wants something special, he knows as well as anybody the Fox system
and he could beat it.

Chernin was pretty heavily involved in getting POTA2001 up-and-running at Fox 17 or 18 years ago, wasn't he? I guess he's a fan, but hopefully - if he's trying to make a name
for himself as an independent producer - he won't make the same mistakes this time round...

I captured the still images from the opening credits of the cartoon series - they're in the 'Return POTA stills' folder in the Photos section. They're only shown for a split
second each, so can't really be appreciated, but some of the ape sketches are pretty good and the Underdwellers look more creepy than in the actual cartoon. They might be production sketches or something.
There's also a shot of Bill Hudson doing the 'see-no-evil...' routine.

I noticed that not only is Peter Jackson's Weta Digital
FX company doing "Rise of the Apes" but Andrew Lesnie is the director of
photography (cinematographer). He's photographed all of Jackson's films this
decade, including the "Lord of the Rings" (he won an Oscar for the first one)
and "King Kong". He's got a lot of experience working with Weta and merging
live-action with CG. Weta does FX for other filmmakers (including many Fox
sci-fi movies) but Lesnie isn't usually part of the bargain since he's been busy
with Jackson. Though he did do the Will Smith "I Am Legend" and this weekend's
"The Last Airbender". In the '90's he did the famed "Babe" pig movies. Probably
after "Apes" he will move on to the anticipated "Hobbit" movies if it's true
that Jackson is leaning toward directing them.
It still remains to be seen if these CG apes are
going to work but I can't knock who they've enlisted to do it. Director Rupert
Wyatt is certainly being thrown in the deep end of the pool, going from "The
Escapist" to this.

If anyone wants to see the Guv in person he will be appearing at the Aero theatre in LA on July 9 with his films "Bus Stop" and "The Hoodlum Priest"

Don
Murray In Person! Don Murray was nominated for an Academy Award
for his very
first film, BUS STOP, and he only got better from that point
forward. With turns in films
by Otto Preminger, Fred Zinnemann and Francis Ford Coppola, as
well as countless
appearances on television, Murray has created dozens of
indelible performances.
Double Feature: HOODLUM PRIEST, 1961, MGM Repertory,
101 min. Don Murray
plays Father Charles Dismas Clark, a man of the cloth who works
with juvenile delinquents,
in this powerful film based on a true story. Keir Dullea plays
one of the teens in an
early role.
BUS STOP, 1956, 20th Century Fox, 96 min. Dir.
Joshua
Logan. Marilyn Monroe stunned critics and fans alike with her
heartbreakingly tender
performance as a truck-stop singer who falls in love with naïve
young cowpoke Don Murray,

Hi Jess
If we push hard it will be Christmas.
The second “back story” comic is almost
finished but part 2 of BEGINS is still being developed.

This was too good to pass up. James Franco (among
certain other projects) is guest starring on the soap "General Hospital" for the
next month or so. Here is yesterday's introduction where he pulls his monkey
out. It's only a toy one but he says he's "thinking about getting a real one". I
presume he is or will soon be in Vancouver to do just that (so to speak) as the
star of "Rise of the Apes".

BF: How did you get involved with the
Planet of the Apesnovel, and what can fans expect within its pages?
AG:
I first became an Apes
fan as a child watching the ABC 4:30
movie. I remember seeing the first movie and being surprised to see the story
continue throughout the week, especially after the world-altering events in
Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
(Battle was not part of the lineup, so I
didn’t even know the movie existed until about a decade later). These
movies were repeated quite often, so I got a chance to really absorb them.
As a
child, I would see questions that seemed to remain unanswered between each
film. As an adult, I now know that these were continuity errors. As a dreamer,
I used my imagination to fill in the blanks and cover the mistakes. As a
writer, I made an appointment to meet with FOX licensing. I pitched the concept
of a series of illustrated novels that would plug those plot holes, as well as
work as interesting tales in their own right. Fox loved the idea, and though I
have mapped out a six novel cycle, we settled on a two book deal with an
“option to renew.” The first book is entitledConspiracy of the Planet of the Apes
and tells the story of the ill-fated
astronaut John Landon during the first movie, as well as showcasing many
characters that appear from the films’ sequels. We have known for years
that Landon was captured during the hunt along with
Taylor , but he is missing for the majority of
the film. It is later revealed that he has been lobotomized by Dr. Zaius, but
what happened to him during that missing time, and how did he touch the lives
of other pertinent apes characters? This one is about the ride—we all
know how Landon ends up, and it’s not a happy ending. It’s his
journey that I hope will captivate readers.
As
far as the art goes, we’ve got an incredible lineup of top industry
professionals as well as up-and-coming new blood. Conspiracy
has a fantastic cover by legendary
artist Jim Steranko, who created the original concept paintings George Lucas
used to sell Raiders of the Lost Ark
to Paramount back in 1979, as well as
creating innumerable logos for major sci-fi and fantasy films and designing the
look of Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula
.
We’ve got beautiful pieces by Joe Jusko and European artist Sanjulian. We
have additional paintings by Dave Dorman, Chris Scalf, Matt Busch and Brian
Rood of Star Wars
fame, as well as Ken Kelly, Barron
Storey and Mark Texiera, to name a few. Dan Dussault has even provided us with
two fantastic paintings. The book is lavishly illustrated and truly a work of
art; we are hoping to have it out for the Holiday
shopping season this year.
BF: Will there be other
Apes
projects in the future?
AG:
At
least one! The previously mentioned second novel will tie up the loose ends
between the first and second film and tells what happened to
Taylor during the time he was missing in Beneath the Planet of the Apes
.
Both novels stand on their own, but together paint the larger picture of how
Milo , Cornelius and Zira were able to escape the
destruction of the Planet of the Apes.
Whether or not we go past the second book depends on sales, so I am not at
liberty to discuss the plot lines for the remaining four books. However, I will
tell you that like these first two, their stories weave in and out of Apes
canon, and each standing as a complete
story in its own right. We want to entertain both longtime readers and those
with no prior knowledge of Apes
as well.

.htmlI'm hoping CONSPIRACY lives up to expectations, but I hope it doesn't try
bundling too much into one story... I mean I think it's pretty simple as to
what happened to Landon: He was caught in the hunt and when he came to he
probably started yacking away, was put under wraps by the higher ups & they
decided to do away with the problem immediately... I cannot see him having been
kept alive long enough to have been leaked to the outside world or even
those within the in the Ministry of Science except for the absolute higher
ups... I'm envisioning this story being a repeat of the TV show: Interrogated by
the higher ups with Milo taking Galen's place, Landon piques his interest
and he goes undercover to speak to him privately and learn about the ship
etc.... I hope I am WRONG, but I just have a feeling...
I'm all for new stories set within the original series story arc, but there
are some things that are best left unwritten... How the original PLANET
came into being, what happened to Landon pre-lobotomy, or even how the apes
were able to get Taylor's ship working are things that are best left to the
imagination... When you start messing around with that type of thing too much,
you risk writing a "fan-boy" story wherein you're really "forcing" your
opinions on everyone as to what happened...
