Interesting stuff….

BF: How did you get involved with the
Planet of the Apes
novel, and what can fans expect within its pages?
AG:
I first became an Apes
fan as a child watching the ABC 4:30
movie. I remember seeing the first movie and being surprised to see the story
continue throughout the week, especially after the world-altering events in
Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
(Battle was not part of the lineup, so I
didn't even know the movie existed until about a decade later). These
movies were repeated quite often, so I got a chance to really absorb them.
As a
child, I would see questions that seemed to remain unanswered between each
film. As an adult, I now know that these were continuity errors. As a dreamer,
I used my imagination to fill in the blanks and cover the mistakes. As a
writer, I made an appointment to meet with FOX licensing. I pitched the concept
of a series of illustrated novels that would plug those plot holes, as well as
work as interesting tales in their own right. Fox loved the idea, and though I
have mapped out a six novel cycle, we settled on a two book deal with an
"option to renew." The first book is entitledConspiracy of the Planet of the Apes
and tells the story of the ill-fated
astronaut John Landon during the first movie, as well as showcasing many
characters that appear from the films' sequels. We have known for years
that Landon was captured during the hunt along with Taylor , but he is missing for the majority of
the film. It is later revealed that he has been lobotomized by Dr. Zaius, but
what happened to him during that missing time, and how did he touch the lives
of other pertinent apes characters? This one is about the ride—we all
know how Landon ends up, and it's not a happy ending. It's his
journey that I hope will captivate readers.
As
far as the art goes, we've got an incredible lineup of top industry
professionals as well as up-and-coming new blood. Conspiracy
has a fantastic cover by legendary
artist Jim Steranko, who created the original concept paintings George Lucas
used to sell Raiders of the Lost Ark
to Paramount back in 1979, as well as
creating innumerable logos for major sci-fi and fantasy films and designing the
look of Francis Ford Coppola's take on Bram Stoker's Dracula.
We've got beautiful pieces by Joe Jusko and European artist Sanjulian. We
have additional paintings by Dave Dorman, Chris Scalf, Matt Busch and Brian
Rood of Star Wars
fame, as well as Ken Kelly, Barron
Storey and Mark Texiera, to name a few. Dan Dussault has even provided us with
two fantastic paintings. The book is lavishly illustrated and truly a work of
art; we are hoping to have it out for the Holiday
shopping season this year.
BF: Will there be other
Apes
projects in the
future?
AG:
At
least one! The previously mentioned second novel will tie up the loose ends
between the first and second film and tells what happened to Taylor during the time he was missing in
Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
Both novels stand on their own, but together paint the larger picture of how Milo , Cornelius and Zira were able to escape the
destruction of the Planet of the Apes.
Whether or not we go past the second book depends on sales, so I am not at
liberty to discuss the plot lines for the remaining four books. However, I will
tell you that like these first two, their stories weave in and out of Apes
canon, and each standing as a complete
story in its own right. We want to entertain both longtime readers and those
with no prior knowledge of Apes
as well.

"Predators" producer Robert Rodriguez did an
interview where he says Fox has turned over a new leaf and are keeping hands
off. They realize too much studio interference has ruined their franchises and
they said, "Make the best movie. Just make it good and make it for the fan
base".
What kind of an upside down planet have I landed
on? Can it really be true? And what does that mean for "Rise of the Apes"? It'll
probably mean more if "Predators" is a hit. "Predators" had a year to work their
magic, the same as "Rise".

This new POTA has had a lot of ups and downs.
From "POTA: Genesis" to "Caesar" to the current title "Rise of the Apes", the
question on everybody's mind has been: who will play Girl # 1? Well, now we have
the answer and the role is in capable hands. She will be played by Leah Gibson
(no relation to Mel Gibson), a Vancouver actress whose current film is none
other than "Twilight: Eclipse" (does she play Vampiress # 3? No, her character
is called Nettie). Maybe the box office magic will rub off.
Good for you Leah. Now all we can do is wait for
the announcement of who will play Girl # 2. If there's a 1 there's got to be a
2, right?

.html Hi, folks,
I'm pleased to announce that my upcoming book Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes will contain exclusive entries from author Drew Gaska's first POTA novel, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes, due out in 2011 and
edited by yours truly. I've been mostly radio-silent for the past several months while completing the manuscript, which clocks in at approximately 3,000 entries and 320 pages. We're looking to release the book
some time in the fall.
Thanks to this arrangement with Drew, Apes fans will be able to get a sneak preview of the novel's content several months before that book hits stores, by reading about the various characters who will appear in
Conspiracy.
I promise not to reveal the novel's ending in the encyclopedia, so don't worry about massive spoilers--though if you've seen the first Apes film (and, really, I can't imagine why the heck you'd be on
this group if you haven't), you can probably already figure out, at least in part, where it's headed.

Hi Cougar. I appreciate your vote of confidence in me, but there's no need for me to take the reins (even if I had the power to do so, which I don't). The novel is definitely coming
out--Drew is now writing the final draft, and I'm currently editing that draft, a few chapters at a time. There were a number of real-world delays that prevented us from hitting the expected release date, including
Drew getting his Critical Millennium series published and an upcoming Space: 1999 license launched, but we're still in production. Besides, it's Drew's baby, not mine--I don't think he'd appreciate
my trying to steal his thunder. I'm glad to be involved, and to be able to work the novel into the encyclopedia, but the book is definitely Drew's, and I'm not looking to stage a coup. :)

The word is that Brian Cox might come aboard
"Rise of the Apes" as a nasty who gives humans a bad name to Caesar. This is
cool for two reasons:
a) Brian rocks as a bad guy ("X-Men 2", "Troy",
the "Bourne" flicks);
b) He is very intertwined with director Rupert
Wyatt's career. Wyatt had been making short films for a long time and Cox agreed
to do one. But when Wyatt came around again Cox insisted he write a feature for
him or bug off. The result was "The Escapist", Wyatt's first feature which Cox
starred in. And of course that's very relevant, good or bad, to "Rise of the
Apes". Ultimately the movie will "rise" or fall with the director.
c) Ha! I said "Cox" <.html <.html

Yes, here's the details on Brian Cox and "Rise of

He plays the bad man who runs a primate sanctuary.
This pretty much jibes with the details of the early script:
Sounds like they're pretty much following the

people now doing the apes who will rise. I think their work is superb.

The ride seems a bit breif but really outstanding. Too bad they don't have this at Universal Studios Florida.
We ended up with Harry Potter which I have yet to see hopefully this month.
The original King Kong ride at Orlando was also removed from Universal so perhaps it had more to do with just a fire in California.
It was canceled clear across the board years ago.

I agree. I took the whole family there a month
or so ago and the rides were sensational. We saw a sneak preview of the KNOG
ride and I was really considering staying a few more days!
I somehow managed not to see or do
anything POTA.
Maybe I’m losing interest.

Here's a little review of the new "King Kong
360" ride (with video) at Universal Studios in
California . It replaces the famous
mechanical Kong that got ruined during the '08 studio fire. I guess this is
the future, even our rides are CG now. But it's made by the same
people now doing the apes who will rise. I think their work is superb.

There ya go he’s gone.
As to his comments, he’s right that
you love to promote yourself. So do I love to promote myself, and Neil
and our POTA stuff. There is nothing wrong with that.
I made the mistake of mentioning to James
that you originally signed up for a FZ then you pulled out and gave what I felt
was a poor excuse (and you have since then corrected me on that, and I
apologize I thought it was lame). James was asking me what I knew about
your new book and I said I’d purchased 2 copies of your first book,
however since you didn’t buy an FZ I would be taking the low, petty road
and I would not be purchasing your new book. Petty or not, I still won’t
be supporting your new book with cash (or comments, seeing as I won’t be
buying a copy). But you are free to plug it on the group and members here
are free to discuss the book.
Well, except for poor old James because he’s
been booted. A moment of silence for James please…..

Just FYI, by coincidink, 2 trailers for new movies
starring "Rise of the Apes" leads have come out so I thought I'd post them.
Neither James Franco or Freida Pinto are household names but there's a good
chance their profile will "rise" before "Apes" comes out.
Franco has a number of movies coming out between
now and when "Apes" debuts, including a film opposite Julia Roberts next
month, a reunion with his "Pineapple Express" director (a medieval stoner
comedy), a drama directed by Danny Boyle (pretty much a one-man show with
serious Oscar bait) and this one where he plays Beat icon Allen Ginsberg in
"Howl":
Freida Pinto is just getting started as an actress
but "Slumdog Millionaire" was a great launching pad. Here she plays the title
role in "Miral", directed by acclaimed dude Julian Schnabel:
There's too much talent in the cast; "Rise of
the Apes' should be illegal! ; ) <.html <.html

Word is that David Oyelowo might join the cast of
"Rise of the Apes" as Steve Jacobs, the corporate guy behind the ape medical
testing. Obviously the character name is a nod to original "Apes" producer
Arthur Jacobs. I'm cool with character names that tribute the folks that made
the original films (there's reportedly an orangutan named after Maurice Evans)
though I don't like characters named after other characters (Dodge, Stewart,
etc.). We'll see how it pans out.

Thanks to Tim Parati, scans of an article profiling Charlton Heston

I also discovered a couple of days ago that the popups didn't work

I don't know if this has been brought up or if
anyone has ever thought about it, but when people talk about Planet of the Apes,
it usually leads to time travel. It really bothers me. After 6 films
and 2 shows (I'm not including novelizations or comic books), "time travel"
occurred in ONLY Escape and POTA 01. Planet, Beneath, and TV all dealt
with LONG space trips. They didn't go into a rift or
an anomaly. They travelled at a normal speed and went into
hibernation. I am assuming this for Beneath and TV. Am I the only
one that gets bothered by this?

The cast keeps coming today. Now there's word that
"Harry Potter" 's Tom Felton will play the son of the mean primate sanctuary
owner (played by Brian Cox). He'll probably have such classic lines as, "Please
Dad! Don't beat Caesar again!" and "Please Dad! Don't put electrodes on Caesar
again!". Can't wait!
Now we have a "Harry Potter" alum and a
"Twilight" alum. That's better luck than rubbing Cornelius' head.

Dude, the core of the entire POTA saga is TIME TRAVEL...it effects each and
every film as well as the TV and cartoon series.
And dont forget that Brent & Skipper travel thru time (following

CONQUEST is all about fulfilling (or self-fulfilling) the prophecies

A slew of new actors has been added to the "Rise"
imdb ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/fullcredits#cast
), including Terry Notary, a famed movement specialist. He trained the ape
actors for POTA2001 as well as doubling Tim Roth. In this one he plays "Alpha",
presumably the 2nd major ape in the cast. Probably he'll do the Andy Serkis
thing of performing for the CGers to use.

By "time travel" I meant in the traditional Sci Fi

.htmlYes, but in PLANET, BENEATH, and the TV series, they all go into the future
"unconventionally," don't they? I mean how many people go forward in time
in a spaceship? Not many, so if a space journey isn't "unconventional," what
is?
In PLANET, they're only in space for 18 months, yet 2,000+ years passed,
they weren't on some flight that was supposed to be a 2,000 year journey...
Calling it a "2,000 year journey" would mean they were knowingly going to be
flying for twenty centuries, the same way you'd might say your journey to the
store usually takes 15 minutes...
Regardless, if their going forward in time in a space flight doesn't
constitute "traditional Sci-Fi unconventionality," what does? What makes the
ape-o-nauts "time travel" in ESCAPE any different from the flight in PLANET? They
both went from one time frame to another, just opposite directions...

FYI, here's some more from the stars of "Rise of

James Franco, the media is making a big deal

busy guy explains things, plus some clips from his career. After shooting
"Apes" this summer, he goes off to study at Yale:
Here's the trailer for Freida Pinto's Woody Allen

Watts:

John Lithgow is talking about the new Apes on his
Twitter. He loves the director, stoked about Brian Cox being in the cast, they
shot until 1 AM on 7/9 -10, 7/5 was indeed the 1rst day of filming, and he
accidently called Freida Pinto "Leila". Sounds like the actors are enjoying this
"FX" movie. John says, "I love my role in this movie! Am I wrong?"

The newly announced Tom Felton (the bad kid Malfoy

Apes" . I think the "ape sanctuary" scenes he's in is where the apes revolt,
kind of like Ape Management in "Conquest". Don't know what's happened to our
main characters at that point, the ones that raised Caesar. Lithgow says he's
done by the end of the month. Shooting is scheduled to conclude Sept. 17.

Yes, I can tell the difference between an ape and
a Predator. But once again, I think this is reflective of how Fox is thinking
and relates to "Rise of the Apes". Comic-Con has been going a couple days and
Robert Rodriguez confirms that Fox is interested in a "Predators 2" (not to be
confused with "Predator 2"). Now, "Predators" received a decidedly mixed
reaction and has not taken the box office by storm. So far it's made $ 81
million world wide, but it only cost $ 40 million and with little advertising.
Anyway, it's perceived as a poor showing for an established franchise so the
idea of a sequel might seem a surprise to some.
But Rodriguez says they were just "testing the
water" with this first one and are now going to go bigger. And that seems to be
the plan with "Rise of the Apes". The apes reportedly don't get busy until the
end so it will be the same situation, and then the sequels will be ape fests.
But this news suggests to me that Fox is very forgiving and intent on
reestablishing these franchises. So even if this first "Apes" isn't "Inception"
level, they'll cut it some slack.

A Vancouverian took some pics of the "Rise of the

the Golden Gate Bridge (like the "bridge" battle in "Conquest"). This setup
looks like the one used to do the Golden Gate Bridge scene in "X-Men: The Last
Stand". For those who have or can rent the two-disc version of that film,
there's an extra called "Anatomy of A Scene". This is about the GGB scene (the
mutants divert the Bridge so it goes to Alcatraz) and shows probably how they
will shoot the scene in "Rise".

This video opens with the Golden Gate Bridge scene
in "X-Men 3". Reportedly the early script for "Rise of the Apes" includes a
battle on the Golden Gate Bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if Fox chose San
Francisco as the location because they have the elements from this scene (this
movie only came out 3 years ago). Unfortunately I couldn't find the making of on
youtube but the green screen setup for "Rise" looks pretty much the same as the
one for this used to film the people and the cars, and then everything else is
CG elements (they DID film actual bridge models, it's not all just
computers). People aren't allowed to film on the Bridge anyway, and even aerial
footage has to be shot from a certain distance. I may be way off but this
footage might be the same elements they use for the apes' climactic
attack.
