So they are not using make-up. It will all be computer animated like "Avatar?" Interesting. Again, I will ask you --- which Vancover are they shooting in? The one in Wash or BC? From what I can
tell, it's a good chance this might be on Vancover Island, which is extrondinarly beautiful. I know, lived there for fifteen years.

Here's some more shots from "Rise of the Apes". Looks like Franco and Caesar in an intense situation in a forest.

I've just been watching soem of the Lord of the Rings DVD extras this week - there's lots of footage of Andy Serkis doing exactly this - running around in a gimp suit with sensors
on his face - for his role as Gollum, to get realistic movement and facial expression when they digitally convert him into an ape. He may not even be that height when it's completed. There's also lots of
behind-the-scenes stuff from WETA studios, most of which is astoundingly creative. They seem to be racing through the filming though - presumably there'll be 10 or 11 months of editing and CGI ahead?

Shooting is scheduled to wrap Sept. 17. But Fox's
"X-Men: First Class" comes out a couple weeks earlier and they haven't even
started shooting yet.

In one of the photos (in the woods), James is looking at Andy eye to eye.
So I believe Andy's original height is being used for Caesar.
Which would be just about right if referenced towards Roddy McDowall's height. It's all good.

Here's some more shots from "Rise of the Apes". Looks like Franco and Caesar in an intense situation in a forest.

Those pictures posted yesterday taken in a "forest" seem
to be on to something. A commenter at imdb who seems to be a native posted
today: "("Rise of the Apes") is filming in Robert Burnaby Park this weekend - -
they've been setting up effects for the past two weeks. Lots of fake giant
stumps (perhaps for a redwood forest setting?). The playground has been
repainted, and picnic tables replaced, so that'll likely be in the shot as well.
Apparently there's a shot with the apes coming out of the forest".
So perhaps there will be a big battle in a
redwood forest (hopefully they've learned something from the Ewoks). James
Franco's intense expressions in those shots suggests that his character might
live to be part of the battle. Also today, Fox announced that Franco's film "127
Hrs." will be release on Nov. 5th. Pretty much a one-man show, it's based on the
true story, with Franco playing a guy whose arm gets caught under a rock during
a hike and there's only one way out. Could he be getting an Oscar nomination (or
win) right before "Apes" hits?

Oh, this just in. "X-Men: First Class" is
scheduled to START shooting Sept. 21st after "Apes" wraps,
and yet will be in theaters before "Apes". So much for "Apes" having a
short schedule.

I've just been watching soem of the Lord of the Rings DVD extras this week -
there's lots of footage of Andy Serkis doing exactly this - running around in a
gimp suit with sensors on his face - for his role as Gollum, to get realistic
movement and facial expression when they digitally convert him into an ape. He
may not even be that height when it's completed. There's also lots of
behind-the-scenes stuff from WETA studios, most of which is astoundingly
creative. They seem to be racing through the filming though - presumably
there'll be 10 or 11 months of editing and CGI ahead?

I want to make a few things clear. I'm not
sure who posted the other day about Rick Baker retiring because of CGI.
Rick has always embraced, suggested, and experimented with the use of CG in
conjunction with FX make up. His few attempts at retirement had nothing to
do with CG taking over the make up artist's job. After 40 + years of doing
it for a living, it's a love and passion he doesn't want to hate.
2nd--whay all the bashing of the ape make up in POTA 01? The make ups were
and still are GREAT. They are the closest thing to real apes without going
to animatronic heads. The sculpts, paint jobs, and applications are
impeccable. You can't base the quality of all the make ups on just the
female faces. The idea of eyebrows, lipstick, and the hairstyles were not
Rick Baker's doing. He was just following the studio's demands, after all,
they are paying him! When you are hired to do a make up job, you give
designs and ideas, but ultimately, the studio has the last say. Unless you
know make up or even what a real ape looks like, don't bash Rick's
designs.

Hi Tim
Many moons ago I bought these, Rich
Handley translated and a bunch of people helped to develop them into a
translated version.
These translated versions were made available
for sale but as usual only a handful of people purchased them. We were
going to use the money from that to pay Neil to do a TV Show unfilmed script as
a comic.
It was made very clear to me that I only
bought the originals and I wasn’t part of the decision making in the team.
I did, however, pay to have them printed
and I do have some left.
If they are not already available on
Hunter’s site (I really do lose track!) you have my permission to make
the translated versions available. If you contact Dave Ballard (he’s
not a member of the DG) he may have original scans in Spanish and you could organize
with him to make them available on Hunter’s site too (again, check Hunter’s
site first as they may already exist).

Enjoy!

Here's a link to a Film Score Monthly thread about
who should do the music for the new "Apes". Who should? Michael Giacchino (who
did the rebooted "Star Trek" movie) comes to mind, and he's said he grew up a
fan of the "Apes" TV show. With all the Peter Jackson alumni working on it, it's
easy to fill in the blank with Howard Shore ("Lord of the Rings") or James
Newton Howard ("KIng Kong"). Maybe these folks are out of Fox's price range. But
now's the time to have fun and speculate. Probably the announcement won't come
until next year.

It's not "Apes" but it does shed some light on doing these things for Fox. The
series will continue all week and eventually they'll update it with the
forthcoming "Alien" franchise blu-rays. Like "Apes", "Alien" is currently being
prequelized. This time by the original director, Ridley Scott, which should be
interesting.

They're not bad - those Aussies sure do like the Apes! There's a band here that are doing pretty well called 'Fight Like Apes'. I read a review of their first album that said
they were named after a Speedy Gonzales quote (?) but wikipedia says otherwise. I don't really like their music much though.

Yeah, it looks like something to promote the TV
movie versions of the TV show to local stations. So that would've been early
'80's.

I'm curious as to whether the original was brown as it is shown or if

I just got back from a lengthy vacation in Florida. While I was there, I logged into my e-mail account on my inlaws' computer and saw that I had a lot of incoming mail. Somehow, all of it was deleted and is
unavailable to me on my home computer. Optonline.net has no backup of the messages, and I don't recall what most of the e-mails were about since (being on vacation and on someone else's computer at the time) I
just glanced through them quickly. {{{sigh}}} So if any of you e-mailed me something and are awaiting a response but I haven't responded, my apologies--please feel free to resend it to me and I'll get back to

If Fox doesn't want to spend the dough for one of
the big boys, how about this dude to do the ROTA music? He's done acclaimed
sci-fi music, but for TV. His credits include the reboot of "Battlestar
Galactica", the "Terminator" TV show, "Human Target" (which co-stars Jackie
Earle (Kraik) Haley) and the "Galactica" spinoff, "Caprica". His first feature
credit was just released, "Step Up 3D", and it seems the next step (up) would be
to take his sci-fi scoring experience to the big screen, as Giacchino did going
from TV to "Star Trek".
He's known for using unusual instruments and
techniques to do "inventive" music, much like Goldsmith's "Apes" score is
remembered for.
This track sounds Ape-like to me:
Here's his "Galactica"-ized version of "All Along
the Watchtower":
"Terminator", machine-tinged but
emotional:
His rockin' "Terminator" flavored gospel
tune:
He'd get my vote if Ringo Starr is
busy.

Okay, I went ahead and took a few photos of Beneath on my
projection screen.
PHOTO1: My projectors.
The one up top is a LG LED projector I use for television. Runs at about 30,000 hours and will last about 7 or 8 years running at 10 hours a day.
Retail price: $499
The one on the bottom is my
Optoma HD65 projector
that runs on a light bulb
that lasts from 4,000 to 5,000 hours (I only use this for blu-ray and DVD movies) Comes with a 3 year warrenty that covers the light bulb as well. Retail price: $799
PHOTO2: The projection screen.
At the time of taking the picture, Star Wars was playing on television. :o) But to give you a scale, the HD TV is a 40 inch.
PHOTOS 3 - 9: Snap shots of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" running on my HD65 Optoma.
So pretty much, this is what a bluray looks like on a projector screen
. Again, my digital camera isn't the greatest but at least you get the idea.

I agree....I really like his Galactica music.....it's great even as a stand alone album! Tim

"Terminator", machine-tinged but
emotional:
His rockin' "Terminator" flavored gospel
tune:
He'd get my vote if Ringo Starr is
busy.

You have been spoofed: I have had the same message sent to one of my groups through one of my alternate emails and another group owner has had the same email sent to his group through his address.
Unfortunately all that yahoo can advise is to put your own email address on moderation and then that way you can catch the spoofed messaghes before they go through. I had to go to the rather Draconian extreme of
shutting out that email identity from possibly posting in that group. Since it wasa only my backup identity in that group and not my main owner's identity, I could do that.
Best Wishes, Dale D.

I'm so excited, guys. I videotaped myself trying to play the piano...so no snickering cause I suck at that. I'll have to ask my husband how to edit it so I can post it on YouTube or something. I'll
let you know once it's up.

Here's another of my State of the Fox reports that
don't deal specifically with POTA but with where their heads are at in the
studio that owns it's ass. OK, "Predators" not so good. But according to the
filmmakers Fox backed off and let them make their movie. So I'll call that a
misfire but with good intentions.
"Alien" prequels... got the original director
back, Ridley Scott. I'm looking forward to that.
And then there's "X-Men", Fox's only franchise
that has stayed popular enough to continue throughout the last decade. But still
the more recent ones have disappointed and contributed their share to Fox's rep
as a bad steward of franchises. And now the new one "X-Men: First Class" is
coming out the same month as "Rise of the Apes" (for those who think "Apes" has
a tight schedule, this one STARTS shooting Aug. 31st and comes out before
"Apes").
So has Fox turned a corner with "X-Men" as
hopefully they have with "Apes"? Well, producer Bryan Singer has just made some
comments and I can say I'm intrigued. It's a, wait for it, prequel set in the
'60's with a feel of the James Bond of the period. That sounds pretty different.
And I like the director, Matthew Vaughn ("Kick Ass", "Layer Cake"). So what I'm
hearing of this and what I'm hearing of "Rise of the Apes" gives me hope. Maybe
some day, in the not too distant future you may find yourself saying under your
breath, "fox rocks...". Maybe you won't even believe you said it. Was it the
wind?

Hollywood's embrace of brand names goes beyond
movies based on other movies, TV shows, comic books, video games
and cartoon characters. They are also movie-izing playthings. "Monopoly" is
in the works and Universal is spending $ 200 million on a "Battleship" movie (as
in, "You sunk my..."). So here's a funny video on the phenomenon by John August,
who has written his share of Tim Burton movies (on topic!).
