Subject: OT: Sy Fy to make feature films
.html
.html
Universal and Sy Fy (formerly the Sci-Fi Channel) will join together to create Sy Fy Films, and hope to start producing two genre films a year by 2012. Obviously they don't have the rights to POTA but they've done some good work on the home screen and maybe they'll raise the current very low bar on the big screen for sci-fi movies. They've been pretty ambitious, trying to do faithful adaptations of the "Dune" novels (Arthur Jacobs was the first to try to go there) and the terrific redo of "Battlestar Galactica", which won a Peabody Award and was even invited to the U.N. I'd be interested to see what they could do on the big screen.
The Sci-Fi Channel was also very good to POTA, showing the TV series (including the "lost" episodes) when they couldn't be seen anywhere else and enlisting Roddy McDowall to host POTA Week. Good luck Sy Fy!

Finally! At long last, after all the years of vague innuendo and rumor, Fox has unearthed the missing footage from the original ending to the first POTA film. Check out this still:

I think it would have been epic. I hope the upcoming Blu-ray re-release contains this lost footage!

Got my Lexicon yesterday and it is awesome! Very well laid out and excellent original illustrations! I can't imagine the hours of watching, noting and re-watching that you put in to this Rich! Congratulations! Instead of reading it from the beginning, I have just been randomly opeing it to an entry....eventually I will get through the whole thing! Thank you for providing a new POTA product for this holiday season!

Subject: OT: Burton, Superman
.html
.html
In the late '90's Tim Burton spent a year developing a Superman movie that would have starred Nicolas Cage as the man of Steel. The plug got pulled right before filming (Warner Bros. decided to go with the expensive Will Smith flop "Wild, Wild West"). Had Burton done "Superman", chances are he wouldn't have done "Apes". The thing is, I think whoever they'd got, they were determined to go with a flawed script so the results would have probably been no better. At least with Burton there were some positives: his visual style, the Elfman music, a bigger budget because of his track record.
Anyway, here's some interesting test footage of the Superman suit that would've been used if Supes got Burton instead of us.

Does the blu-ray boxed set of the original five POTA movies contain any added scenes. I've heard that Conquest has the original opening sequence where a chimpanzee is killed by a trooper while trying to escape the City. I've also heard it has the original, more brutal ending.

James Franco mentioned why he did "Rise of the Apes". He did for the best of all reasons, he did it for "Lord of the Rings".

"Lord of the Rings", you ask? This!

Maybe they should call the new movie "Lord of the Apes". Wait, that's been taken.

The Blu-ray conquest does have all the missing scenes that were not
shown theatrically, but I can't remember the scene you mentioned at the
opening. I certainly has the gorier aspects of the final battle.
If I recall correctly, you can chose to view the original release or the
extended cut.

I don't remember any of the other movies having extended scenes.

*** You're correct, the opening scenes of the runaway chimp are not
included... I don't think that scene even exists anymore, it was chopped up and
parts of it used when they show Caesar trying to escape... ***

*** BATTLE is the extended "TV version" of the film, so there are two
extended films in the set.. ***</HTML>

Thank your chosen deity or whatever for that, I can't stand Nicholas Cage and Superman is such a dull character/story. Maybe you can tell that in the '70s I was a Marvel kid. ;)

> Had Burton done "Superman", chances are he wouldn't have done "Apes". The thing is, I think whoever they'd got, they were determined to go with a flawed script so the results would have probably been no better.

Agreed. Burton wasn't the main problem with PotA2001, the blame mostly lies elsewhere. I think any director would have come up with something compromised under the conditions that the film was produced.

> At least with Burton there were some positives: his visual style, the Elfman music, a bigger budget because of his track record.

Positives and negatives; a so-and-so film; flawed but watchable (well, to me it is ;) ).

That's a shame, I would've loved to have asked him about the early days of the production - he was the last person alive who was involved at the start. According to Rod Serling, Blake Edwards planned to produce and direct the movie even before Arthur Jacobs got involved.

I am receiving reports that fans are getting their POTA prints in the mail, but that in some cases the packaging was less than adequate, resulting in damage to the prints in one case & missing extras in another.

If you set is damaged or missing items, please let us know ASAP - presentation is everything to us at BLAM!, & we would never knowingly allow products to go out in such a manner.

Since Patrick Doyle is reportedly the "Rise of the Apes" composer, the credit of his that I zeroed in on was "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein". It's Doyle's only science fiction film and the new "Apes" will deal with Frankensteinian themes for the first time. Mary Shelley's 1818 novel "Frankenstein" is often considered the first science fiction story and of course it's been overshadowed by the 1931 Boris Karloff movie. Arthur Jacobs had wanted to do a movie based on Shelley's novel but it never happened. Instead, Kenneth Branagh got the closest in 1994. Some felt it was too faithful, and other complaints resulted in mixed reviews. But I always liked this movie. And Doyle's music helps bring it to life. It's alive!

Hi, Kevin,

Just so you know, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes is actually a novel, not a comic book. :)

The release date is up in the air due to a couple of factors, but the project is still currently in the works.

Every year the Library of Congress inducts a group of films to be preserved until the world ends and the apes find them (I'm not sure if that's a direct quote from their mission statement). POTA made the cut 9 years ago. I guess we shouldn't hold our breath until one of the sequels is inducted, though "Beneath" would be cool to watch after the end of the world, to see what they got right.

According to imdb, "Rise of the Apes" shot in Hawaii. I would assume this was a small shoot for the African opening scene without the principal actors. But usually Kamloops is used when they need an exotic location for British Columbia productions. So there must have been something in Hawaii they needed.

I signed on to ebay the other day and discovered it with only 5 minutes left....
I got it for 62 bucks plus ten for shipping......it (or they as Bill and Jeff are on two sperate sheets) are in great shape..
trying to figure out which episode it's from....or am wondering if they re-used shots over and over...
does anyone know how to decipher the writing on it? "BG" I assume stands for background....
does "SC" mean scene?

It was Zira, Cornelius, Bill, Jeff looking at a map I think.  It was quite valuable as it was one of VERY few with the genuine original hand-painted background (which was definitely used over).

Well, now I’m glad I sold it because it would have been underwater with the rest of my POTA collection otherwise!

I had it all at Neil’s, and they are predicting Neil’s place will be completely underwater in about 4 hours.

I’ll miss my collection, but I feel worse for Neil.

I helped him get as much as we could so if you pray, please spare Neil (and my POTA collection!) a thought….

OK. I thought the worst of the flooding down there was over and that you

This is just terrible.

Thanks for letting us know and keep us in the loop.

Wow. That's awful news. I have lots of double ups on POTA stuff. If you loose your collection I will gladly go through it and send you
whatever I can to help you kick start a new collection my friend.

Hope the flood doesn't happen but if it does then I am sure  all of us dedicated POTA fans will help out somehow.

In the U.S. insurance doesn't cover flooding. Back in 1999 Hurricane Floyd dropped 16 Feet of water and mud into my home.

I got Neil and his wife Meredith just in time – I turned up in my car and they filled it up, and I got them a Taxi (a van that was also filled with belongings).

As we left Ipswich for my house we were stopped at a roadblock and told there was no way to my place in Kenmore .  You can imagine how we felt – think about the taxi driver with a taxi full of stuff!  Luckily, I went down back streets and got to another neck of the highway, and got Neil and Meredith (and some of their and my belongings) out of there.

I’ll get Neil to jump on soon and say “hi”.

Thanks Jeff – shall do.

When I was last there to get Neil and his wife out, the river had risen to swallow Neil’s driveway so I parked next door and I had about 10 minutes before I had to move the car.  As you say – all we could do was watch.

That’s a similar level to Neil’s house.  In other words – fully under water.

Flooding is the worst! I hope all goes well.

In the U.S. insurance doesn't cover flooding. Back in 1999 Hurricane Floyd dropped 16 Feet of water and mud into my home.

Woke up to strong sunshine this morning and leapt out of bed, excited!

Turned on the news to discover that it means nothing – the flood levels are overflow from previous rain.

Last report Neil’s house was up to the bottom level garage.  Within 5 hours it is predicted to be completely under water.

Neil and his family are alive and well, Neil and his wife are staying here (we JUST got through before they shut down roads which would have left us stranded).

All prayers, karma, best wishes accepted.

Michael

It reminds me of pictures I've seen of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  It's horrible when you lose everything like that.  The clean up and recovery is probably going to be the hardest part of all this. I'm glad you were able to save your collection. Most importnat is that all of you still have your lives. Neil is very lucky to have you and Sally help them through this. That's great Tim! I have a pencil of the annoying screaming bird/dragon & a painted cell of the buffalos with one horn growing out of their head. Both I accuired at Comic Con in 2007. Cels featuring the apes are incredibly hard to come by & very pricey. I doubt I'll ever own one.

I'll get Neil to jump on soon and say "hi".

Thanks Wendy!

However, I only saved about 1/25 of my collection….

It’s far more important that we are alive and healthy, though….

Yes, do keep us informed. I've seen all this unfold on the new and you and Sally have been on my mind. My thought and prayers are with you all.

Thanks Jeff – shall do.

When I was last there to get Neil and his wife out, the river had risen to swallow Neil’s driveway so I parked next door and I had about 10 minutes before I had to move the car.  As you say – all we could do was watch.

I’ll try to find the photo I took.

It was Zira, Cornelius, Bill, Jeff looking at a map I think.  It was quite valuable as it was one of VERY few with the genuine original hand-painted background (which was definitely used over).

That’s the thing – we are about 30 minutes from Neil’s place, and the roads are all blocked off.  So we can’t really confirm the damage until we get there.

We know for sure Neil’s lower ground stuff (lounges, all his art source books, all his art tables, light box etc, lots of his art – this is where he does all his work) is in trouble.

It’s yet to be confirmed if the water has reached the top floor, where Neil’s extensive comic collection is and my POTA collection.

It’s likely it should all be under the water by now.

However, Neil managed to get a lot of his comics into plastic garbage bags and they are individually bagged so they may float/survive.

My collection is in plastic containers.  Some have huge cracks in them – some are almost sealed.

So it’s a “wait and see” but I am not going to be too positive because it’s a collector’s nightmare actually seeing such things….destroyed.  That’s one less of all of these things….

Anyway – we’ll keep you in touch…

Michael

Well it's about one of the few things you do get to keep! :-)

Thanks for all the concern folks, the family are all okay and thanks to the fantastic help from Mike and Sally and their family. Thanks to them and some brilliant help from my kids, especially my oldest son and his girlfriend's family we managed to save a lot of important stuff like my record and CD collection, irreplaceable books, photos all my artwork (I think) and a few electrical things. We had to leave my large comic collection and all of our furniture behind but we did manage to save a bean bag so one of us will have something to sit on!

I feel worse for Michael knowing most of his collectibles are gone as well and we will never be able to thank them enough for getting us through and putting up with us living at their place now.

Well it’s not looking good.

My POTA collection and Neil’s comics (and a lot of other stuff including furniture, my kids’ toys, my toys, clothes, $30K in trading cards….) are likely to be covered in water by now.

Here’s photos and some commentary from Neil.

I am going to try to be positive and make something really good rise from all this shit – more later.

Neil and I have discussed a website for a very long time.

We are agreed that we are now going to put a lot of effort into a Planet of the Apes collectibles Website.

I want this to be something ALL fans contribute to.

Essentially, it will be THE collectibles site and we may even do a book too.

What can you do?  Well, I’d love people to join us in this effort.  Even if collectibles are not your thing, we want you to help.  Send us your pictures, and even more importantly tell us your stories.

I think the Megos are well covered as are most Action Figures, so I’d like to start with PAPER items.

Could we please offer category suggestions for starters (eg Newspapers, Posters, promo booklets, Novels etc)?  I think we’ll stick to the classic movies and TV Show.

Please help if you can.

Michael

I’m just doing what I would want others to do for me – I’m not particularly religious but it’s a great philosophy.

This Friday, Jamie Harris plays Popeye in "The Green Hornet" (huh? what?). But soon he plays Roy in "Rise of the Apes". He talks about the latter in this interview here. Sounds like the apes are pretty violent. But he says, "the script is an amazing story. It's told very differently. It's a very humane feel to it".

Here's photos and some commentary from Neil.

Well, I'd love people to join us in this effort.  Even if collectibles are not your thing, we want you to help.  Send us your pictures, and even more importantly tell us your stories.

I think the Megos are well covered as are most Action Figures, so I'd like to start with PAPER items.

Could we please offer category suggestions for starters (eg Newspapers, Posters, promo booklets, Novels etc)?  I think we'll stick to the classic movies and TV Show.

Please help if you can.

Michael
