Neil and I have discussed a website for a very long time.

We are agreed that we are now going to put a lot of effort into a Planet of the Apes collectibles Website.

I want this to be something ALL fans contribute to.

Essentially, it will be THE collectibles site and we may even do a book too.

What can you do?  Well, I'd love people to join us in this effort.  Even if collectibles are not your thing, we want you to help.  Send us your pictures, and even more importantly tell us your stories.

I think the Megos are well covered as are most Action Figures, so I'd like to start with PAPER items.

Could we please offer category suggestions for starters (eg Newspapers, Posters, promo booklets, Novels etc)?  I think we'll stick to the classic movies and TV Show.

Please help if you can.

Michael

So horrible.....so sorry Neil...

When my sister got back to her house in New Orleans four months after Katrina and saw the complete mess and destruction that used to be her life....well, anything under the five foot water line.....people kept telling her "well, at least it was just stuff"
She agreed but it bothered her greatly....it was HER stuff...her life.....
Another friend who lost most everything to the Gulf surge in Mississippi, just lost the rest of his stuff in a house fire in NYC on Christmas night.

Don't know how that is supposed to make anyone feel better...it's not.....

Just want you both to know that we are all here.....thinking of you.....
any way we can help?

Tim

Well it's not looking good.

My POTA collection and Neil's comics (and a lot of other stuff including furniture, my kids' toys, my toys, clothes, $30K in trading cards….) are likely to be covered in water by now.

Here's photos and some commentary from Neil.

I am going to try to be positive and make something really good rise from all this shit – more later.

Well it's about one of the few things you do get to keep! :-)

Thanks for all the concern folks, the family are all okay and thanks to the fantastic help from Mike and Sally and their family. Thanks to them and some brilliant help from my kids, especially my oldest son and his girlfriend's family we managed to save a lot of important stuff like my record and CD collection, irreplaceable books, photos all my artwork (I think) and a few electrical things. We had to leave my large comic collection and all of our furniture behind but we did manage to save a bean bag so one of us will have something to sit on!

I feel worse for Michael knowing most of his collectibles are gone as well and we will never be able to thank them enough for getting us through and putting up with us living at their place now.

It’s all still very abstract.  It will hit home when we get there and start to unpack things and assess the actual damage.

Well it’s not looking good.

My POTA collection and Neil’s comics (and a lot of other stuff including furniture, my kids’ toys, my toys, clothes, $30K in trading cards….) are likely to be covered in water by now.

Here’s photos and some commentary from Neil.

Another friend who lost most everything to the Gulf surge in Mississippi , just lost the rest of his stuff in a house fire in NYC on Christmas night.

Don't know how that is supposed to make anyone feel better...it's not.....

Just want you both to know that we are all here.....thinking of you.....
any way we can help?

Great idea... I remember you discussing the site awhile ago and thought it was brill'  then.

Count me in to help... not sure what paper items I've got stored away (apart from the comics) but I'll get my thinking head on.

Best,Graham.

Hi John

Thanks!

I guess what I’m hoping to do first is look at logistics and planning.

PAPER GOODS to me is:

MOVIE POSTERS:

USA

England ( Europe )

Germany

Belgium

Australia

Japan

Etc (this is what I need to know first up – what OTHER countries).

Each of the above then needs to be categorized by size/type of poster (one sheet, etc).

Then we need to get the images together.

AND…most importantly to me, we need to do a commentary on this and talk to collectors of the posters.

The lists and images will be great for the website and the commentary can be used with the lists and pictures for the publication.

PROGRAMS:
USA

England ( Europe )

Germany

Belgium

Australia

Japan

Etc

NEWSPAPERS:

? – Fairly sure these were exclusively USA ?  Would be great to hear from people who actually RECEIVED these at cinemas.

LOBBY PICTURES:
USA

England ( Europe )

Germany

Belgium

Australia

Japan

Etc

Also discussion on these – how different countries vary, how some show deleted and/or unused scenes etc

COMICS:

Gold Key

Curtis (+ other countries…love to get commentaries of how other countries had differing pages/covers/colour of covers etc)

Adventures….

80s series (talk to Gary Challoner/other writers and artists)

Ty Templeton’s series (still plenty of people t talk to!)

MAGAZINES:
Famous Monsters

Teacher’s Guide

Any articles…..

PHOTOS:

Autographed

Other

Am I missing anything for PAPER GOODS can anyone tell me please????

Dear All

I would gladly contribute to a site like this. I have many European and Asian programmes  and FOT pictures etc

Good luck, guys.  Sounds like a plan.  I am all for this endeavor--unfortunately I have nothing to add.

Well, I’d love people to join us in this effort.  Even if collectibles are not your thing, we want you to help.  Send us your pictures, and even more importantly tell us your stories.

I think the Megos are well covered as are most Action Figures, so I’d like to start with PAPER items.

Could we please offer category suggestions for starters (eg Newspapers, Posters, promo booklets, Novels etc)?  I think we’ll stick to the classic movies and TV Show.

Please help if you can.

Michael

Those pictures are heartbreaking as is all the news footage that we've
been seeing. While I obviously can't relate to such devastation
personally I hope both of you find the courage to hang in. Yes it is all
just material things, but I can see how loosing things you've acquired
personally over a long period of time can have an emotional attachment.
I hope that Neil managed to save most of original artwork because those
are irreplaceable in a way.

Being submerged as it is, it looks like it's going to be some time
before Neil gets back home.

Ah, the Taxonomy of the Planet of the Apes!

We discussed this a few years ago. If you recall, at one point I too
hoped to do something like it, and in anticipation started saving images
of all the collectibles as I came across them (from these discussion
groups, ebay, other sites, etc). At the time, I sent you 2 CDs of
images that I had collected which were somewhat ordered in directories
and subdirectories based on content.

Do you still have those CDs or is it fair to assume that they are also
under water?

In any case, I've continued adding things over the years and my POTA
drive now contains 1.3GB of data, 3,421 files in 190 directories. I do
not have pics of everything however. For example, I never collected
things like newspaper clippings since those never interested me.

Let me know if you want me to send you an updated DVD.

As I see it, the really daunting task is writing out descriptions of all
the stuff. Collecting images was always just a click away. But to them
document all the information, that's the real work. With enough
knowledgable volunteers, you may be able to parcel off bits and pieces
of the taxonomy for individuals to document and then have a review process.

Another way of doing it is using 'cloud' resources like google docs
where many people can edit the document simultaneously.

Thanks Mike,

I was referring to these as “PROGRAMS”.

I’ll call them PRESS BOOKS and include the TV show one.  What other countries did press book that we know of?

Hi Dario,

Yes this is precisely what we discussed but I had other priorities.  This time I can be motivated by the loss and instead of pursuing the goods I can go hard looking for photos and information.

The CDs you sent are gone Dario so if you kept a backup copy….yes please do send me your latest!

I would like to build the website and ask people to contact us with information then I’ll add in what I can.  It will get tricky when I get contradiction information…..hmmmmm.

The big movie this weekend is "The Green Hornet". So far there's two "Rise of the Apes" actors in it. Jaime Harris was mentioned in a previous post and I read in a review that James Franco has a cameo in the opening scene. Face time is important. Pretty soon, when people ask me who is in the new POTA I won't have to say, "John Lithgow".  : )

It's been announced that Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel will no longer be an "Alien" picture but has morphed into an original film called "Prometheus". With "Predators" a wash, I guess that leaves POTA as Fox's only name sci-fi franchise (until "Avatar" returns in 5 years or so). Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi is a big deal for POTA's genre but it's an unknown quantity. When it was an "Alien" film it was supposed to come out at Christmas, now it's scheduled for March 2012; seems like a markdown in expectations.  I'm not knocking originality, but from a corporate point of view I guess they better start treating  POTA right.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see Great Scott return to sci-fi after 30 years.

Michael

Things are kinda slow so I thought I'd link this scene. One of Patrick "Rise of the Apes" Doyle's best regarded scores is for Kenneth Branaugh's "Henry the 5th" (1989). This clip begins with Doyle himself singing and then follows Branaugh across the battlefield carrying the body of none other than young Christian Bale. Batman wasn't triumphant this time.  Maybe imagine this as the humans after a battle against the apes in one of the upcoming sequels.  : )

Yeah, but they didn't credit John Chambers for the Spock ears; they said some "Desilu guy". Cancels it out.

HBO has bought the rights to the documentary "Project Nim", about an experiment in the early '70's to raise a chimp as a human child. The doc is from the same filmmaker who did the Oscar-winning "Man on Wire" so there is a lot of expectation. In fact, HBO wants to release it in theaters instead of going straight to TV. Maybe it'll hit theaters at the same time as "Rise of the Apes"?

Meanwhile, the new PBS series "Pioneers of Television" kicks off tonight with a look at sci-fi ("Star Trek", "Lost in Space", "Twilight Zone").

They said that originally they had a Desilu guy working on it, but he
tried to use some papier-mache goo that looked terrible and eventually
found someone else to do it. I too was waiting to hear "John Chambers"
and maybe even a side mention of POTA.

Still, it was a great show to watch and it was great to see some of the
Serling videos.

Most of the impact was on the kids’ toys (many boxes of them) and bedding, and collectible (Disney for example) toys I’d got them.  Many can be washed but the Disney toys were mint, tagged and bagged so they will not be the heir-looms we’d hoped for.

The POTA collection is amazingly fairly well spared!  I lost all 10 original ADDARS (Sealed) including the Soldier and Stallion and the rare “IN a Bottle” kits – I seem to be about to get these from Mark Smolen.

All Medicoms and Kubricks gone (where are all the cheap arsed ones NOW?!?!?!) – still looking for replacement I can afford.  I’m sure I’ll get these in time….

One big box I lost had a “PACIFIST” Zaius parachutist (no gun) MOC that is soaked and ruined.  It cost me big money and is the only one I have seen.  Wonder why they did these without the gun?

A few Mix ‘n’ Molds too that should be replaced.

Pretty bloody lucky actually!

Huge trading card collection took a big hit (a good $20,000 gone).

I’ll let Neil tell you how he went….

Sorry to hear that Michael. It sounds like a lot of the stuff is at least salvagable (medicoms, plastic model kits) if no longer mint. I've always gone for loose stuff like that, not mint in package.

This is probably no surprise since "Rise of the Apes" has been pushed back to Thanksgiving. But neither will Fox's big summer movie "X-Men" be represented, so I don't think "Apes" would have in any case. Fox doesn't like to spend.

Speaking of which, "X-Men: First Class" sounds like it really has it's back against the wall, still filming with a June 3rd release date. Since "Apes" finished filming last September, is it possible there will be another release switch?

In just lately re-read one of the Chambers interviews on Hunter's site where he said that a guy called Fred Phillips had made a set of ear molds that got damaged, so Chambers designed new ones. But maybe that's old news to Trekkies?

Hi Tim

Yes, the POTA collection actually came through FAR better than anticipated, but that wasn't all there was….

I live in Brisbane , Neil is in IPSWICH (which went under before Brisbane ).

Most of the impact was on the kids' toys (many boxes of them) and bedding, and collectible (Disney for example) toys I'd got them.  Many can be washed but the Disney toys were mint, tagged and bagged so they will not be the heir-looms we'd hoped for.

The POTA collection is amazingly fairly well spared!  I lost all 10 original ADDARS (Sealed) including the Soldier and Stallion and the rare "IN a Bottle" kits – I seem to be about to get these from Mark Smolen.

All Medicoms and Kubricks gone (where are all the cheap arsed ones NOW?!?!?!) – still looking for replacement I can afford.  I'm sure I'll get these in time….

One big box I lost had a "PACIFIST" Zaius parachutist (no gun) MOC that is soaked and ruined.  It cost me big money and is the only one I have seen.  Wonder why they did these without the gun?

A few Mix 'n' Molds too that should be replaced.

Pretty bloody lucky actually!

Huge trading card collection took a big hit (a good $20,000 gone).

I'll let Neil tell you how he went….

Thanks for asking….

Michael

Well the house is now unable to be lived in and we are still trying to find somewhere else to live. Lots of damage of course and we lost just about everything. We got out some stuff like my record & CD collection, DVDs, The Stephen King books, most photos and stuff like that but lost heaps.

We have no furniture whatsoever (except 1 bean bag!). We have hardly any clothes, no kitchen stuff, blankets etc. I lost most of my huge comic collection as well.

I managed to get most of my artwork out except for one cabinet and one folder with lots of my early stuff in it. I lost all my reference books (heaps) and a vast collection of photos and pictures that I had collected over the years for reference purposes. Also lost my light box/desk and my drawing desk and just about all of my art supplies. The list just goes on so I have been focusing on what we saved rather than what was lost.
I did get all of my apes stuff out (which wasn't a huge collection though) except for a box of Medicoms and Kubricks as far as I know.

Could have been worse I suppose and plenty of other people have been hit harder than us.

The reviews are coming in for the Sundance Film Festival opener "Project Nim", about a famed '70's experiment to raise a chimp as a human. Sounds like it's more about human failings than simian science but it's getting good reviews and would make an interesting counterpoint if it hit theaters at the same time as "Rise of the Apes".

Supposedly it came as a 3 piece basic kit and you could get a POTA or Bionic Man (?) version, identified as different only by the bass drum picture.

NOW…..there’s one on eBay at a really great BUY IT NOW price, and nobody is taking it!

Hi Tim

I emailed the seller, and yes it is just one piece – it is from Joe Farrell originally and has some holes in it and a wrinkle, but it’s WAY too good to pass for $150!

Way to go Tim!

Apparently the seller, APEMANIABYJOHN, bought Mark Smolen’s complete drum kit so I think he’d be able to get you a photo of the entire kit – I’ll be asking fro some for the Collectibles Site for sure!

'Rise' did get a brief blurb in the Entertainment Weekly upcoming movies preview, but it was one of those ones you miss if you don't look really close, the 'other movies' blurbs on the side of the page while the movies they focus on are the main part of the page. This was the issue with Johnny Depp on the cover, either the first or second week of January.

Apparently the seller, APEMANIABYJOHN, bought Mark Smolen's complete drum kit so I think he'd be able to get you a photo of the entire kit – I'll be asking fro some for the Collectibles Site for sure!

For many years I heard about the notoriously rare POTA Drum Kit but never met anybody who owned one.

Supposedly it came as a 3 piece basic kit and you could get a POTA or Bionic Man (?) version, identified as different only by the bass drum picture.

NOW…..there's one on eBay at a really great BUY IT NOW price, and nobody is taking it!

Have I missed something?!?!?!!?

Michael

James Franco and Jon Stewart talked Oscar host to Oscar host. No "Apes" but pretty funny.

Thanks Rich.

Hey, is BOOM! Connected in any way to BLAM! ?

I got the impression that while BLAM! was doing the novels, there would be no comics?

Great news though – another comic!  YAY!

No connection, other than both being named after comic-book onomatopoeia. :)

It was really good. Michael, it's a reality show where make-up artist are given projects & a deadline & are judged by working spfx artist. As long as it stays away from what these people do while living in a loft together & focus on the projects they work on this show is gonna be great.
