I’ve finally seen the POTA episode
and it’s very impressive.
I contacted the collector and I’ll
be featuring an interview in the next Forbidden Zine.
I’ll also be speaking to a bunch of
other collectors of POTA.
Looks like we’ve got a collectibles
issue!

Last year I got into the recent redo of
"Battlestar Galactica". It's apocalyptic sensibility reminded me of certain
sci-fi I've liked in the past, so I did a search for POTA in the "Battlestar
Wiki" and found that POTA was a definite influence on the show. It's main
creator, Ron Moore, called POTA "one of the greatest film franchises of all
time" in the podcast for the "Eye of Jupiter" episode (which includes a visual
reference to "Beneath"). And episodes like "The Hub", "Revelations" and
"Sometimes A Great Notion" feature references (the character Starbuck is told,
"You may not like what you find" when she seeks knowledge of her destiny, and
she's also referred to as the "harbinger of death"). The show also has similar
names like the Sacred Scrolls and Galen. It's definitely got some themes and
attitude POTA fans might cotton to. Even Eric Greene wrote about it in the book
"So Say We All".
I never got into the original "Battlestar
Galactica". Even as a kid it was too wooden and bland for me. But Lew "Mandemus"
Ayres did feature in the first episode. <.html <.html

Even if these existed, all it really is is an plastic light switch plate

worked with plastics and had a bit of talent could create something like

Not sure how “official” they
are but they were manufactured in
Britain around the same time as the
wrapping paper.
I can guarantee they are rare. However maybe
that’s because they are British! I recall I bought the wrapping
paper for $500 and then out they cam and the market was flooded/price bottomed
to about $20.
Until very recently there were only a
handful of people who actually SAW this.

Yeah, but you would be very lucky to get
THIS one in a rummage sale and with the box too.
They were a low production item and for
obvious reasons the ones that did sell were used and then thrown away.
Not many people thought to keep the box.
He does own another in better condition!

Yeah the pistol without the POTA sticker
is generic but even without the logo it gets $100 - $350 depending on
condition.
The holster – completely different
story. VERY hard to find, with or without a sticker.
And the box – well, I’ve seen
1 and I am led to believe there is only 2 known to exist.

Step one sounds relatively safe. Just avoid bleach at all costs because it will ruin the color. I would also soak everything--all plastic stuff inside the first solution and then soap/rinse off the next day.
-
If you have a large piece of fabric that has mildew on it, first test the fabric for color fastness by rubbing a damp white cloth on the material. If the colors do not run, then it is colorfast and you can treat the
material.
-
Use a solution of 1 cup buttermilk to 1 gallon of cold water. Soak the fabric in the solution overnight. The next day, you can place the material in the washing machine using
cold water and regular liquid
detergent
. Wash as usual and the mildew should be removed.
-
Notice spots forming on your laundry because you forgot to put them in the dryer fast enough? Don't panic, you can use a mixture of 1/4 cup salt with 1/4 cup lemon juice and
1 pint of warm water. Make a paste of the ingredients and apply to the fabric. Rub the mixture into the spots and then allow the paste to sit for a half hour. Afterwards, wash the load of laundry again with regular
detergent.
-
Removing stains
from your fabrics can also be accomplished by using a solution of 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and 3 cups of water mixed into a spray bottle. Mix all the ingredients together and use
as a pre-wash spray for your laundry or fabrics. You can also use this solution on your bath curtains to keep them free from mold and mildew.
-
If the material is white, you can always use bleach. Use 1 1/2 cups of bleach to 2 gallons of water and allow the garment to soak for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse with cold
water and place in your washing machine with cold water and regular
laundry detergent.

Perhaps a light, gentle wash using just a large bowl of water with just
a touch of detergent and then using your hands to swish it all around
for a while after a soak. Worth a try. But I'm sure Jess would have a
better idea of what is really your best bet to get those cleaned off.
You might try the MEGO museum boards for advice as well.
If nothing else, you're going to learn a lot about restoration
techniques in the coming weeks. If you get enough useful information you
can write an article for the Forbidden Zine: "Restoration on the Planet

The buttermilk solution I have not tried--but the main thing is you have to kill the mold spores first or it will keep coming back.

Another helpful thing I found is that after you wash the clothing out, leave it in the sun to dry out. I don't know how hot the sun is over there--perhaps too hot...I would turn it
inside out first to prevent fading and then let the sun dry it out .

Here's some more info I stumbled across and you can order it...but it will be coming from Florida. Perhaps they have a distributor in Oz. Perhaps you can contact them to see if this chemical will remove
mildew/mold safely and keep the colors intact on your fabric.
Solution #2 Safe & Effective: Sodium percarbonate (Disodium Peroxydicarbonate) (not to be confused with sodium bicarbonate)
Sodium percarbonate is an excellent detergent and bleaching agent based on hydrogen peroxide. It is a good cleaning and bleaching agent at normal temperature, and has strong fungicide effect. Fruits and vegetables
treated with sodium percarbonate can be kept fresh, and be stored for a long time. In medicine, it can kill staphy lococcus, and colon bacillus .
This product is a white particle powder, non-toxic no contamination, non-flammable, non-explosive, easy to get damp, and soluble in water.
Hy-Tech Oxygen bleach
,(sodium percarbonate) is excellent for cleaning and removing organic stains (such as coffee, tea, wine, fruit juices, foods, sauces, grass and blood) from fabrics, plastics, fiberglass, porcelain, ceramics, wood,
carpets, asphalt, concrete, etc. Oxygen bleach can be used in any place in or around the house that need to be destained and deodorized; it is efficient, safe and economical. It is non-toxic, environmentally safe,
biodegradable, and leaves no harmful by-products or residues which can harm the environment Except for industrial-strength cleaning or stripping jobs, sodium percarbonate is our hands-down choice for most average wood
preparation jobs.
Mix 6-8 fl oz of Percarbonate in a gallon of warm or hot water. (2 fl oz per quart)
Good luck with the cleanup guys. It sounds really horrific--photos look really awful. Be safe too--you don't want to mess with mold/mildew!!

Those don't look all that bad, but it may just be a matter of the photo making it look better than it really is.
Perhaps a light, gentle wash using just a large bowl of water with just
a touch of detergent and then using your hands to swish it all around
for a while after a soak. Worth a try. But I'm sure Jess would have a better idea of what is really your best bet to get those cleaned off.
You might try the MEGO museum boards for advice as well.
If nothing else, you're going to learn a lot about restoration
techniques in the coming weeks. If you get enough useful information you can write an article for the Forbidden Zine: "Restoration on the Planet of the Apes".

Footage from the upcoming TV show "Terra Nova"
was shown tonight during the Super Bowl so let's talk Chernin! Peter Chernin
used to run Fox, then he was # 2 at the whole News Corp. under Rupert Murdoch.
Now he runs Chernin Entertainment and this here "Terra Nova" is their first
production. Their first movie is something called "Rise of the Apes". ;
) So what say we take a look at "Terra Nova" :
Scary, huh? And now here's Peter Chernin talking
to the "Wall Street Journal" about it, in which he says, "The quality and
complexity of the storytelling is what attracted us to this series and that's
exactly what we look for in other projects we are developing". By inference he's
referring to "Rise of the Apes". ; ) But why should we believe him?
He's a suit and suits lie! >: ( But he's also Mr. Fox
and knows how to work it. He's made his dough and now he wants to work on his
legacy, meaning quality flicks that will be remembered. ; )
Yes, Peter Chernin. That's not a hard name to
remember if "Rise of the Apes" sucks. >: (

I have to admit, the flood damage was not
too harsh on my Planet of the Apes collection. It was really harsh on my
Gum cards though.
Here’s a list of what got hit:
Sideshow Figures: All
Medicom Wind Up: Ursus
Medicom Utra Detail: All (including 2 “rare”
Cornelius) – will cost $600 to get from
Japan vis Ebay.
MEDICOM Kubricks: All (have replaced
entire set for $100)
Addar: All 10. All 10 are still fine
inside – instructions barely wet and backgrounds/stickerd in the “BOTTLES”
are perfect. The SCENES IN A BOTTLE still display OK but were sealed and
I want to replace them. The SCENES IN A BOTTLE will be difficult to
replace.
AHI: Zaius Parachute (without gun) MOC. This
still actually displays OK. I have bought a MINT ON CARD Galen to “replace”
it!
Kenner
Action Figures: All (about $50 to replace)
Smaller BURTON MOVIE action figures (may
not bother).
REVOLUTION series including issue #1
signed by TY.
That’s it!
It’s still quite upsetting, but I
can replace most of it.
I’m trying to make it a POSITIVE and
ironically John M’s collection means I’ve now re-purchased nearly
all the good things I sold when the coffee shop went belly up and now I have a
Radio and some other new pieces I thought I’d never get. This is
how I try to approach most disasters – to be in such a state of denial
that I transform them from a tragedy to a celebration. I must admit it’s
also kind fun and liberating to free the sidshows and medicoms and Kubricks
from their boxes….something I always wanted to do but never dared!
If anyone has any SIDESHOW figures they
want to sell, or the MEDICOMS (figures and Wind Up Ursus), or ADDAR SCENES IN A
BOTTLE (SEALED), please let me know.
If anyone sees them on eBay please also
let me know….

.htmlAll I want is a good story and good art. Now that sounds simple enough,
but the truth is, just like movies and other media, it all comes down to
how much an effort BOOM is willing to put into the project and the
people who actually end up doing do the work.
First and foremost, I want 'classic' apes stories. I want intelligent
stories and not dumbed down fluff. Unlike many, I don't mind if they
deviate slightly from what we already know of the POTA universe (the
POTAverse?) as long as it is done for a good reason. If they stay within
the established realm of the first 5 movies, that is fine also, as I
believe that there is plenty of room for creative stories with that
context alone.
The good news is that I've heard BOOM is doing a good job with their "Do
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" ("Blade Runner" for those not familiar
with the original) adaptation. But in that case they are not really
doing an 'adaptation' and instead are trying as much as possible to use
the exact text of the Philip K. Dick novel. So that project is more
oriented to original art than original story development.
I hope we get enough people here that will get the issues as soon as
they arrive so that we can start discussing them on a monthly basis.
It's only $4 an issue.
With MR comics "Revolution" I knew that I needed to put in my order with
a comic shop since being a relatively new publisher, most shops would
not stock them without having a degree of confidence they would be able
to sell them. BOOM studios, while not a juggernaut like Marvel or DC,
are fairly established, so there is a better chance that the title gets
picked up. But do not be surprised to find that when the time comes, no
shops in your area have any available. When it comes to new comics like
this, the only way you can be sure to get them is to order copies for
yourself beforehand. Any comic store should be glad to do it for you
even if you've never walked into the store before. Take a few minutes
now to ensure you get yours.

I want to see intelligent stories comparable to Serling-ness set in the just pre-Taylor Planet of the Apes. Not necessarily stories of Zira, Cornelius, Zaius or Marcus. There were hundreds of apes living in
Ape City. Surely there can be some good stories there.
How about "Law and Order: Ape City"?! Kidding.. ;)

POTA now ready to order
I popped into my local comic shop yesterday to inquire how soon I should
be able to put in an advance order for the new Boom Studios POTA comics.
As it turned out, the new Diamond Previews catalog already has the ad
for it and the comic retailers now have an order code.
So I've already reserved my first issue. Now I have just sit and wait.

unsaid/left alone: Like the time between the end of CONQUEST and BATTLE... I
can't picture anyone coming up with anything that would make enough sense or

.htmlWhile I wouldn't complain if they give us GOOD stories with the original
ape characters, I too would prefer new characters. Beware the Beast and
the introduction of Gideon was an excellent example of just using what
few facts we know about POTA (dominant apes, humans as wild animals.
etc) all brought together for a great poignant graphic story.
Yeah, Micheal. Do send them BTB!

OK cool but SOME suggestions might help…?
My research tells me the suits at BOOM! are
the same guys who did the MALIBU/ADVENTURE series:
“
BOOM!
Studios was founded in 2005 by Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby….
Prior to BOOM!,
Richie and Cosby worked at
Malibu Comics from 1993
to 1995. The duo left the comic book business to pursue careers in feature
films and were involved producing the feature film adaptation of
Mage by
legendary comic book creator
Matt Wagner
with
Spyglass Entertainment,[3]
and had
various projects with Mike Medavoy (Phoenix Pictures),[4]
Mark
Canton (The Canton Company), Akiva Goldsman, and Casey Silver.
[5]”
This suggests to me maybe we need to offer
some suggestions?
Like a story about how Ursus gained power…..etc…???

The question is how much they want it to be a fan-oriented comic, or if they want a wider general audience. Or if they intend to tie in with the new movie - its hardly a coincidence that
they're starting a comic now?
I'd still love to see the story of Proteus and his pet human (from the sacred scrolls), or of the astronauts who landed 10 years before Virdon & Burke (Virdon's son perhaps??) Those two ideas are fairly
fan-friendly, but they still have a lot of room to introduce new characters and only a few constraints to stick to. Beyond that, yeah, completely original stories and characters might be better than shoe-horning more
into the backstory of existing characters.

"This spring, BOOM! Studios returns us to that far-future simian Earth with
Planet of the Apes #1, a prequel to the classic
Charlton Heston
film that will pit ape against ape as the Lawgiver must be found!"
and....
"Ape society has reached a new
golden age.
but there are ripples of dissent in both the ape and human ranks.
Tensions will rise and soon all will be caught in chaos! And amidst all
this uncertainty, what is the fate of the Lawgiver?"
So it doesn't sound like it will be just before Taylor gets there...more likely post-Battle.....

I was quite surprised when I went to my local Comic shop Wed. to pick up the new 'Famous Monsters of Filmland' & my usual weekly comic fix, to have the shop owner grining at me like
a madman. When I asked him what he was smirking about he showed me the BOOM! Planet of the Apes ad in the new Previews. Very cool & he has mine on order for me. I was also pleasantly surprised that Godzilla is also
returning to comics. Between all the new "Muppet" titles & now this I'm gonna have to get a second job to support my comic habit. ;)

Hello All, Just chiming in with my two bananas.
I think any stories that are dramatic and character driven, based within the context of the first films would work. It's not what you do, but how you do it. Fans are fans because they like a certain thing. As a
creator, if you work on a licensed property and you drift too far away from its core fan base, then watch out. (Too many examples to cite, sadly.)
I pushed the boundaries a bit with Urchak, but still kept the basics the first films had: Apes-over-humans, man-out-of-time, war/revolt, time travel, love interest and loss.
BOOM! could have a real winner here if they don't stray too far from what made the originals a big thing. It isn't that hard. Gary Chaloner

Hi Michael!
Urchak 2 is something I haven't really put my mind to, but a trade collection of the first series would be an idea I could get behind. :-)
I wonder who would own the plates or negs of the artwork now? Adventure was an imprint of Malibu, which was sold to Marvel. So I assume Marvel may still have the negs? Gawd, who knows.

I pushed the boundaries a bit with Urchak, but still kept the basics the first
films had: Apes-over-humans, man-out-of-time, war/revolt, time travel, love
interest and loss.
BOOM! could have a real winner here if they don't stray too far from what made
the originals a big thing. It isn't that hard.

Urchak 2 is something I haven't really put my mind to, but a trade
collection of the first series would be an idea I could get behind. :-)
I wonder who would own the plates or negs of the artwork now? Adventure
was an imprint of Malibu ,
which was sold to Marvel. So I assume Marvel may still have the negs? Gawd, who
knows.

Hello All,
Just chiming in with my two bananas.
I think any stories that are dramatic and character driven, based within the
context of the first films would work. It's not what you do, but how you do it.
Fans are fans because they like a certain thing. As a creator, if you work on a
licensed property and you drift too far away from its core fan base, then watch
out. (Too many examples to cite, sadly.)

Well, it looks like the BOOM! products are coming out & on schedule. Can't say so much for the BLAM! illustrated novel. Aside from some nice hype & high hopes, I get less & less
confident I'll ever even be able to get their book. It's a shame because the art we've seen so far has been fantastic & I'd love to read what they came up with storywise. I've enjoyed the
"Muppet" titles BOOM! has been releasing & never seem to have to worry if they will show up or not.

Also, the BLAM! title wasn't suposed to be a graphic novel. That is a story told in comic style with pictures, word bubbles etc. It's an "illustrated novel." I believe
reading as a novel with some illustrations thrown in here & there. I think that is how both companies could hold the license at the same time.

It's being reported that James Franco has signed
on to play the title role in "Oz, the Great and Powerful". It's a, wait for it,
prequel, to something about a yellow brick road. It's to be made by Franco's
"Spiderman" director, Sam Raimi. Maybe he'll be a wiz of a wiz, if ever a wiz
there was?
Let's hope he gets to play with flying
monkeys. Just another example of the mind-boggling path Franco has taken since
filming "Rise of the Apes". If he had been offered the "Apes" flick now I wonder
if he would've taken it. By the time "Rise" is released he might be president of
the United States (at least in a movie).

Martin Scorsese's 3D extravaganza "Hugo
Cabaret" has been announced for release during Thanksgiving 2011, where it will
face merciless competition from "Rise of the Apes" and (*yawn*) the new Muppet
movie. In a statement released today, Caesar said to Scorsese: "You talkin' to
me? You TALKIN' to me? You talkin' TO ME?".
Caesar reportedly got into a bar fight with
Muppet star Kermit the Frog last weekend where he was heard to say, "Kermit,

Martin Scorsese's 3D extravaganza "Hugo Cabaret" has been announced for release during Thanksgiving 2011, where it will face merciless competition from "Rise of the
Apes" and (*yawn*) the new Muppet movie. In a statement released today, Caesar said to Scorsese: "You talkin' to me? You TALKIN' to me? You talkin' TO ME?".
Caesar reportedly got into a bar fight with Muppet star Kermit the Frog last weekend where he was heard to say, "Kermit, you'll discover that it's not easy earning green when you
go up against me! I'll be having frog legs for Thanksgiving!"

Pretty impressive! Hopefully he'll use his talents to do something original rather than a straight remake of the movies.
The break-dancing orang's not bad:
