This is reportedly the first released image from
"Rise of the Apes" (just Franco doing his thing). Why this image? Why now?
Dunno, but maybe there's more to come soon. It wouldn't hurt to prime the pump
and get some interest going. This film is still suffering from who cares?/Burton

Charlie Sheen was going to star in Adam Rifkin's
POTA film around 1992. That version was halted when Sheen's former boss, Oliver
Stone, expressed interest in doing a POTA film. Instead, Sheen and Rifkin
worked together on the 1994 Fox comedy "The Chase", which includes a clip from
POTA.

DVD Beaver gives thumbs up for the blu ray of the
James Franco film "127 Hrs.", which hits on Tuesday. Watching it again, some of
the establishing hiking scenes did remind me of the Forbidden Zone trek at the
beginning of POTA. They filmed some of the exteriors in the place where the real
story happened, which isn't too far from where POTA was filmed and it's a
similar topography.
Of course, Franco's name seems to be mud at the
moment, post-Oscars, but he is a good actor and anyone who wants to examine his
chops could do worse than this film. It even has the Oscar-nominated song
"If I Rise" (get it, "Rise"?). I don't agree with all the choices they made to
liven up the static story but it's good stuff.

.htmlGreat.
The one time my local independent theater puts one an Ape-a-thon, and
its a week that I'm out of town. Grrr.
Ironically there was an Ape-o-thon when I lived in Montreal as well, and
it was the week right after my son was born, so I missed that one too.
When it comes to Ape marathon movie sessions, I just never get a break.

I take that back,
Now that I look at their March schedule, they'll be playing the movie
throughout the month.
SO I WILL BE THERE!
I finally get to see POTA on the big screen!

Get your hands on these damn dirty Apes in the

I really would love to see Escape on the big screen. Someday a theater here may show it. Sigh.

Patrick Doyle is the composer of "Rise of the
Apes". If anyone's interested in the music aspect, filmtracks has a profile and
various reviews of Doyle works can be clicked on. They're the experts, you're
not, and they think he's rather swell:
Doyle has a long association with director Kenneth
Branagh, from his first score "Henry V" to his most recent, this summer's "Thor"
(Branagh's "As You Like It" featured Doyle as an actor and also starred
"Rise" actor David Oyelowo). Doyle's only sci-fi score to date is for Branagh's
"Frankenstein":
Makes for grand listening while looking at these
snaps:

Actually, regular DVD is sooo first decade of the

old school version of Caesar. But still, you can't beat the price (I think).

Hi John
I’m fine – thanks for asking.
It’s a shame the group has come to
this, but obviously people are happy with chatting elsewhere and I’m
convinced there’s little left to say about POTA.
It’s over to all the others in this
group to get it active again.
It’s easy – what I used to do
was just post something every day, and make darned sure I responded to every
post.
I just don’t have the time or energy
to do this any more.
There’s also only a handful of
people who James is targeting to victimize these days so there’s no
advantage in being the group where James can’t bully you out of your
opinion.
Michael

-------- Original Message --------
Hello!
I've been a visitor to your site for a while; as a POTA fan, I enjoy and
appreciate it very much!
Just thought you'd be interested to know that on Sunday July 31, my cult
film co-op, Exhumed Films, is presenting a GO APE marathon, featuring all
five POTA films shown back to back on the big screen. This is an official
screening, as we've got authorization & have paid rental fees through
Criterion Pictures, who handle repertory screenings of the APES films for
20th Century Fox.
The GO APE marathon will take place at the International House's Ibrahim
Theater in Philadelphia, a state-of-the-art screening room located on the
University of Pennsylvania campus. Tickets to the event are $20, and will
be available from our website in the near future. Show starts at 11:00 am
on July 31 and will run until approximately 8pm.
Anyway, if you get a chance to mention the show on your site, I'd appreciate
it. We have a pretty decent following of fans & often sell out our events
(the theater holds 350 people), but any press is welcomed! Speaking of
press, here's a brief article about the show which also includes links to
our website & facebook page:

That is amazing!!! Thx for posting. I want to use the Ceasar image for my Armando box. I'll have to get in contact with that guy.

Does anybody have any idea who the person is under the makeup? I have never seen this chimp before. It's the same era as the original Planet of the Apes.
Here's a link in case the attachment doesn't come through:

Chernin Entertainment, the company that will try
to put their best foot forward with their first movie "Rise of the
Apes", has brought in another film exec. The article calls the movie
"POTA". I wonder if that's a generalization or if they've changed the name? I
think using the title POTA again would be too confusing. At this point I'm used
to "Rise of the Apes" and think it would be a good title, but some fans seem to
want "Planet" in there.

Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movie "A.I." comes to
blu-ray soon and there's a review up at "DVD Beaver":
I bring it up because actor Tyler Labine made a
comparison between it and "Rise of the Apes" which took me by surprise but I can
see what he means. Both deal with a creation of science that moves into a human
home but proves too dangerous and is thrust into the cruel world where they
are second class citizens, bonding with his own kind.
"A.I." was Spielberg's homage to Kubrick. It was
a story Kubrick wanted to do, his return to sci-fi after the storied trilogy of
"Dr. Strangelove", "2001" and "A Clockwork Orange", but decided it was more
up Spielberg's alley. It got mixed reviews (and damn it's long!) but it was
an interesting flick. Spielberg was as good as anyone in the 2000's for doing
sci- fi with his dark trilogy ("A.I.", "Minority Report" and "War of the
Worlds"), kind of an inverse of his earlier "happy" films "Close Encounters" and
"E.T.". ("A.I."? "E.T."? Now cover your left eye and read the third line from
the bottom). The reviewer at DVD Beaver says "A.I." is a misunderstood
film.
Tyler Labine plays Franklin, Caesar's human
friend at the primate facility he is taken to after he gets in trouble. Here are
both interviews with him again:

Alex Lopez is asking $35 plus $5 for an unpainted cast to be prepared and shipped out from Mexico. Alex is convinced he will not sell his minimum of 10...so any ape fan who can buy one (or two)...to help push up
Burke's sale is GREAT!! If you have the funds and you are a TV series fan...you can help me erase the ugly Ada Chan memories. If at least 20 fans buy this...that would be way cool...cause I know we are dwindling
in number as the years progress.
I am attaching a photo that I have also posted on the MegoMuseum with the headsculpt that Alex has completed. Only some minor tweaking is left, but I think Alex has captured Burke. Alex right now is an unsung
hero in my book, helping fellow ape fans achieve the impossible--a quality headsculpt at an affordable price. If you have already sent Alex your $40, I thank you for helping support our cause.
I believe that two headsculpts would cost you $55 plus an additional $8 for shipping/handling.

showing a rifle wielding woman and barbarian clothed man gives us a bit
more of a glimpse into what this series may be like. An ominous one I'm
afraid as it certainly isn't anything I would expect from a purely
classic POTA.

I wonder if maybe they are tying it in with Burton's film somehow? That female ape on the right with no neck hair looks like something from POTA2001 to me.

Then again, after reading the description it seems they are just using the 'classic' Apes continuity apparently.

Hmmm... interesting! I hadn't even noticed that, but you're right. Given that Fox refused to let both Dark Horse and Mr. Comics tie in POTA2001 with the classic series, it seems
doubtful, but hey, it's been 10 years since that film, so who knows?

Yeah – but what IS continuity?
At risk of being stoned (no, not the stoned YOU are Neil!) , it’s all
back to the timelines.
I hope Rich you will ask the writer what
he sees as the timeline….is Planet a prequel and a sequel, or is the
prequel to PLANET different to what comes after the apes travel back in time?

No need to cram the Thanksgiving turkey in your
mouth and get indigestion so that you can rush to the movie theater. Apes and
turkeys no longer mix. Fox is moving "Rise of the Apes" from Thanksgiving to
August 5th (2011, presumably). What does that make it, "Ape-gust"?

With Fox's announcement that "Apes" is moving to
Aug. 5th, that pretty much cuts the wait time in half. It's only a little over a
month later than the original June date. More interestingly, it puts it a little
over a week after the 10th anniversary of POTA2001. A new "Ape" decade has begun
(hopefully).
Of course that means we'll be getting trailers,
images, etc. a lot sooner. We have to get our nails done, buy some nice clothes
and get ready. And it begs the biggest question of all: What if they move it to
April 5?! <.html <.html

Those who thought Fox had pushed back "Rise of the
Apes" to Thanksgiving to give the FX more time were...right. But now things seem
to be going well and the studio feels it will benefit from being the final
"event" picture of the summer.
A Fox rep says, "The movie looks terrific and we
think we can capitalize on the summer playtime by being the last tentpole of the
summer".
Fox has had success with sci-fi in August before.
In fact "Rise" hits 10 days before the 25th Anniversary of one of my all-time
favorite films, Fox's remake of "The Fly". The first time I ever saw POTA in a
theater was on a double bill with that.
And since they moved "Rise of the Apes" tonight, I
couldn't resist. ; )

No, she wasn't an early candidate for Zira or
anything but she was probably Roddy's best friend and her effect on POTA could
be summed up in one word: "Cleopatra". That was the movie that weakened Fox back
in the "Apes" era. It didn't single-handedly turn the "Ape" budgets to mush but
it was significant. Plus it gave Roddy an early opportunity to be called
"Caesar". Soon Hollywood will try it again with Angelina Jolie as "Cleopatra"
(directors like James Cameron and David Fincher have already been courted).
Wouldn't it be cool if Andy Serkis played Roddy's role?
And of course Liz was a legend. I hope she and
Roddy are reunited. <.html <.html

I've noticed a lot of comment on the 'net that
Fox's move of "Rise of the Apes" to August is a way of "dumping it". I don't see
it that way. To me August has been where the studios have put the more
interesting summer movies, the ones that might get lost in the big budget blood
and thunder of May, June and July. By August people are tired of the
"Transformers" and super hero kind of movies and want more. Usually the August
releases aren't the biggest hits of the summer but they can still do well. I
don't have the statistics right here but that's my take.
I think August goes with what we've heard of
"Rise", that it's a quieter movie with heart. But it still has the advantages
that summer offers: kids out of school, a place to get out of the heat, and
people won't have to stop their Christmas shopping to see it. It's the same time
that Fox released POTA2001, which did well at the box office (might have done
better if it was good) and if nothing else is a proven time of year when
people will go to an "Ape" movie.
There's really not much playing against it at
that time (which includes another Roddy remake, "Fright Night") so if it's good
it will have room to thrive. And if nothing else, we won't have to wait as long
to find out. <.html <.html

.htmlBeen a while but here is the story...
The theater owner had an artist take a hires image of the "Go
Ape!"poster and edited it to include the theater logo and the showing dates.
After inquiring about the poster, I was told that the creator wanted to
keep the original, but directed me to a local printer he used that could
whip up a copy for a few bucks. Sadly, the printing company folded just
a few days before I tried to get a hold of them. But the creator sent
me the source image file and he and the theater owner do not object to
me sharing this online.
I've just passed it to Hunter to put it on his site. So just sit tight
and it'll appear there soon.
The good news is that it's a HUGE hires file and if you have the
resources or a local print shop, you can get a nice poster made. I'll be
shopping around myself.
Keep in mind that it is also a large 6MB file.
A big thanks again to Hunter. I honestly don't know what I'd do without
his site.
For what it's worth, the shop that just closed was going to charge $25
to have the print made.

Did the Smurfs blink? On the heels of "Rise of the
Apes" moving to Aug. 5th, the "Smurfs" movie has been pushed up a week to July
29. I guess they'd rather open against "Cowboys and Aliens" than "Apes"?
"Cowboys" is no small potatoes either, starring Daniel "James Bond" Craig and
Harrison Ford and directed by Jon "Iron Man" Favreau. It's had good word of
mouth. So maybe Sony has heard some scuttlebutt? Could the "Ape-tar" legends be
true?
